In Alive in the Sound, Ronald Radano proposes a new understanding of US Black music by focusing on the key matter of value, manifested musically in its seemingly embodied qualities-spirit, soul, and groove. While acknowledging these qualities are always embedded in Black music, Radano shows they developed not simply from performance but from musicians' status as laborers inhabiting an enduring racial-economic contradiction: Black music originated publicly as an exchangeable property owned by people whose subhuman status granted them-as "natural" musicians-indelible properties of sound. As a contradiction of the rules of ownership, wherein enslaved property was forbidden the right to own, modern Black music emerges after emancipation as a primary possession, moving dialectically into commercial markets and counterhistorically back into Black worlds. Slavery's seminal contests of ownership underlie modern musical sensations of aliveness, which become the chief measure of value in popular music. By reconceiving US Black music history as a history of value, Radano rethinks the music's place in US and global culture.

At the dawn of the '70s, in a country still reeling from the aftershocks of World War 2, an underground movement of rock musicians resolved to tear it all up and start again. Welcome to France, 1968. Music fans in the English-speaking world are well-versed in the parallel Krautrock scene that sprung up across the border in Germany, but they are almost totally unaware of the French musical underground. There the radicalism of May '68 collided with the counterculture, post-psychedelic rock, and free-jazz to produce some of the most distinctive and vital music made anywhere in the '70s. Louie Louie (The Song)
In 1963, a rock group named the Kingsmen recorded the song "Louie, Louie." The popularity of the song and difficulty in discerning the lyrics led some people to suspect the song was obscene. The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity. Information Lives In DIY Music
Within the last decade, the heritage of music subcultures has been a focus of exhibitions, programming, and collecting initiatives undertaken by national institutions including the British Library and Museum of London. These activities have succeeded in attracting large audience numbers and diversifying museum visitor profiles, cementing the position of popular music within museum holdings. However, as museums profit from representation of these histories, grassroots music communities actively struggle to survive in the face of issues, including the regular closure of music venues, the impact of gentrification and the housing crisis, cuts to cultural funding, and the declining value of recorded music in the streaming era.Beginning within these communities at this point of crisis, Information Lives in DIY Music examines the role of information and heritage in UK-based DIY music communities through the framework of critical information studies. The first part of the book explores the impact of institutional historicisation and archiving on DIY music community members, then proceeds to identify and examine the grassroots information and archival practices which underpin these communities. Finally, the book considers how information and records created by currently active communities are affected by socioeconomic, cultural and technological developments in the 21 st century.
