A Little Off Key
A Little Off Key features fifty original songs written over a period of thirty-plus years. The songs are written from several perspectives including a father, a son, and a doctor. The songs in A Little Off Key are about life, loss, luck, loneliness, dogs, cats, birds and even goldfish. And of course, relationships . . . and religion . . . and evolution . . . and creation . . . and eternity . . . and family . . . and getting old . . . and . . . lots of other stuff. Author Brian Elliott has never been a good enough singer or guitar player to be recruited by another band-so he started his own. The Little Off Key Band (motto: "We may not be very good, but at least we don't know many songs.") can be found playing for free, mostly at animal rescue centers and retirement homes.

Music Stirs My Soul
'To read South Australian poet the late Airlie Jane Kirkham's latest collection is to listen to a musical mind at work. I greatly admire the way in which her poems evoke such delight in the life forces of music, despite the restrictions of her own reality. Her description of the simple beauty of the images and sounds weave vibrantly through her poems. Kirkham's language is sprightly, playful and capable of surprising the reader into a heightened appreciation of music.' - Jules Leigh Koch, author of five poetry collections and member of Friendly Street Poets'This book is a triumph of the human spirit. When Airlie Kirkham's promising life and career were cut short by the horrific accident that left her hospitalised for long stretches, permanently paralysed, confined to a wheelchair and in need of constant care, she might well have lost hope. Instead, like the phoenix rising, she has turned to poetry to express the feelings of the last thirty-four years, and in thoughtful sensitive poems she has communicated with a world that must be moved by her courage and determination. It is an inspirational book conveyed in deeply expressive poems which explore the musical world, which gave her great pleasure and highlights her musical achievements. - Valerie Volk, writer of In Due Season, Passion Play, Marking Time, In Search of Anna and others.Music Stirs My Soul is a triumph of courage and creativity. Airlie shares with us her hopes and dreams, and the enjoyment found in everyday life. Her home town Adelaide is highlighted but it is in the poems about music that her joy is most vivid. Imaginative and fresh images enable us to see through Airlie's eyes the beauty of music. Music gives delight in "the elegance of Mozart, the splendour of Mahler, the verve of Prokoviev." Airlie paints pictures from her personal journey inviting us to share her love of music, her musical skills and its joys in her life.' - Pamela Kirkham (Editor)

Down River
In 1972, David Ackles's third album, American Gothic, was released to a flurry of press plaudits declaring it to be 'the Sgt Pepper of folk' and one of the greatest records ever made. Yet the album, like its two predecessors, failed to sell, and after one more record, its creator simply vanished. He found work, raised a family, and died a couple of decades later, having never made another record.Today, Ackles's music is largely consigned to the streaming netherworld. It is yet to be properly repackaged and reappraised, and he remains largely unknown. But there is no middle ground. You either love him or you've never heard of him. His admirers range from Black Flag's Greg Ginn to indie polymath Jim O'Rourke to Genesis drummer turned platinum-selling solo artist Phil Collins. In 2003, when Elvis Costello interviewed Elton John for the first episode of his television show Spectacle, the two spoke at some length, and with palpable respect, about Ackles's great talent, before performing a duet of his 'Down River'--the same song Collins had selected for Desert Island Discs a decade earlier.David Ackles did not make rock'n'roll music, and Down River is not a rock'n'roll story. It is a search for an artist who got lost. Not a pretty-good, I-wonder-what-happened-to-him sort of talent, but a man revered as one of the greats. Drawing on conversations with Ackles during the last year of his life as well as full access to archive material, it positions him as one of the great maverick talents of popular music--an equal of Scott Walker and Tom Waits. It seeks to understand the disconnect between his obvious gifts and his commercial failure, and wonders about the fickleness of fame and cult status. How does this process of retrospective recognition work, and why does it happen for some but not others? Was Ackles's music just too strange, or might his time yet come? And what do the answers to these questions say about the mythmaking of the popular music industry--and about us, the audience?

1973
1973 was a landmark year for The Beatles. It was 10 years since they scored their first UK gold disc ('She Loves You') - ten years since the birth of Beatlemainia. A decade is a long time in pop music. Fashions come and go in the blink of an eye. Most pop stars are lucky to last eighteen months at the top. Yet in 1973 The Beatles collected 13 gold discs between them (seven gold albums and six gold singles). Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr released milestone albums in the form of Band On The Run and Ringo. George Harrison released the follow-up album to All Things Must Pass and John Lennon his follow-up to Imagine. Their contract with Alien Klein ended in litigation from both parties. Lennon and McCartney were being sued by ATV/Northern Songs. A publishing company they once thought they owned. Lennon was fighting deportation from the USA and a failing marriage. Despite the endless court cases, relationship breakdowns, financial and political pressures, and management problems, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr managed to write and record some of the best solo albums of their careers and continued to rack up gold discs. They did all this while in competition with the greatest pop group the world has ever known - The Beatles, whose million selling compilation albums 1962 - 66 & 1967 - 70 topped the charts. 1973 - The Last Year The Beatles Were Fab! tells the story of that landmark year - a year of remarkable highs and lows. A year that could, and would, never be repeated.
Working in Music on the Semiperiphery
Transcending Nationalism?
The European music world at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century was characterised by national ideas and nationalistic ideologies. But the reality of the music itself seems quite different: inspiration did not stop at national borders, and composers sought out poetic material and artistic goals outside the traditions of their homeland. It was often music critics and later music historians who put the works and their creators in a strict national context. In Eastern Europe, traditions of national music writing have been particularly well preserved, with effects that continue to this day. The texts in this volume attempt to suggest alternative readings, to reveal nationalistic stereotypes, and to place the music back in the transnational complexity and richness of its origins.

Sounding the Bookshelf 1501
'Sounding the Bookshelf 1501' explores how everyday texts in Renaissance Italy engaged with music, sound, and hearing. Of the 358 known editions printed in 1501, only a few contained formal music notation or specialist theory. Yet a surprising wealth of musical knowledge emerges from religious texts, classical commentaries, lifestyle guides, poetry, and more. These sources-rarely penned by professional musicians-reflect the broader cultural presence of music in early 16th-century life, touching on themes like music's moral influence, its role in education, and its scientific understanding.Drawing from an ambitious cross-disciplinary survey, this groundbreaking study repositions everyday references to music as vital to understanding Renaissance musical culture. It challenges scholars to look beyond elite and theoretical traditions, and instead engage with the rich, often-overlooked world of non-specialist musical discourse.Set against the backdrop of 1501-a landmark year when Ottaviano Petrucci revolutionized music printing-this book offers a compelling snapshot of how music was understood and discussed by ordinary readers in Renaissance Italy. By sounding out these diverse voices, the project reimagines the contours of music history and opens new avenues for musicological inquiry.

Prophets, Porn Stars, and Playlists
Prophets, Porn Stars, and Playlists: How Modern Music Lost Its Soul - and Why It Still Deserves to Be SavedBy Kenneth Hillyard Modern music is everywhere - and somehow, it means nothing. In this scathing, brutally honest, and ultimately hopeful manifesto, Kenneth Hillyard unpacks the quiet tragedy of a music industry that's traded soul for strategy, vulnerability for virality, and depth for algorithm-approved dopamine. What used to be sacred - the song, the artist, the listener - has been flattened into background noise, branding, and "content." But this isn't just a critique. It's a confession. A reckoning. A love letter to the artists still fighting to be real in a system designed to reward the fake. With chapters that expose the rise of soulless hits, the fall of artist integrity, and even a real-world social experiment involving a fake all-female band called Prophetic Porn Stars, this book asks the questions so many are afraid to voice: Why does empty music rise while honest songs disappear? Can real art survive when the algorithm decides what we hear? What role do we, the listeners, play in shaping the future of music? Through essays, reflections, and one final, quiet plea, Prophets, Porn Stars, and Playlists invites readers to stop scrolling, start listening - and maybe, start caring again. For fans of real music. For defenders of the imperfect. For anyone who still believes a song can change something.

The practical significance of the research results lies in the development of improved designs of self-regulating active elements of the confuser-diffuser type with improved hydrodynamic characteristics, as well as engineering methods for calculating self-regulating active elements and solar heating plants based on them. The results of the completed scientific research allow us to develop designs of the simplest self-regulating active elements that provide a significant increase in energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness and reliability of solar systems, a reduction in material consumption and the cost of individual elements and units, and a significant simplification of their operation compared to traditional solutions.
Sonic Circulations
The role music, sound, and voice played in modern knowledge production in the early twentieth century Derived from the Latin words circum (round) and ire (to go), a circuit can refer to any bounded area. For contemporary readers, it might evoke the course of an electric current, as well as the flow of global capital. Yet sound--an inherently temporal phenomenon--can only circulate in mediated forms. Tracing the pathways through and by which sound traveled in the early twentieth century, Sonic Circulations not only proposes a new account of the role of music, sound, and voice in modern knowledge production but also poses urgent questions about technology and empire, while also foregrounding the tensions and paradoxes involved in situating the sonic within any fixed regime or system. Exploring key moments in the development of disciplines including linguistics, sociology, and eugenics, as well as musicology itself, Sonic Circulations explores the many ways that sound has functioned as evidence and information, as both an object and an agent of scientific mastery. Contributors explore the processes by which sound has moved through a variety of conceptual, as well as physical domains, highlighting the richness of historical contingency. This volume shows that circulation happened in many spaces and through many technologies: through sound recording, but also through the trade magazine and in the classroom; through wireless broadcasting and international festivals, but also in the cozy spaces of the suburban home. Featuring scholars working at the borders of musicology, ethnomusicology, sound studies, and music theory, this volume's ten chapters and two epilogues illuminate an alternative genealogy of modernism, emphasizing the embeddedness of even the most abstract practices in the structures of imperial modernity. Contributors: Peter Asimov, Andrea F. Bohlman, Harriet Boyd-Bennett, Alexander W. Cowan, Emily I. Dolan, John Gabriel, Jonathan Hicks, Alexandra Kieffer, Gundula Kreuzer, Deirdre Loughridge, Emily MacGregor, Giles Masters, Arman Schwartz, Danielle Simon, John Tresch.
