Brahms in the Priesthood of Art
Brahms in the Priesthood of Art: Gender and Art Religion in the Nineteenth-Century German Musical Imagination explores the intersection of gender, art religion (Kunstreligion) and other aesthetic currents in Brahms reception of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, it focuses on the theme of the self-sacrificing musician devoted to his art, or "priest of music," with its quasi-mystical and German Romantic implications of purity seemingly at odds with the lived reality of Brahms's bourgeois existence. While such German Romantic notions of art religion informed the thinking on musical purity and performance, after the failed socio-political revolutions of 1848/49, and in the face of scientific developments, the very concept of musical priesthood was questioned as outmoded. Furthermore, its essential gender ambiguity, accommodating such performing mothers as Clara Schumann and Amalie Joachim, could suit the bachelor Brahms but leave the composer open to speculation. Supportive critics combined elements of masculine and feminine values with a muddled rhetoric of prophets, messiahs, martyrs, and other art-religious stereotypes to account for the special status of Brahms and his circle. Detractors tended to locate these stereotypes in a more modern, fin-de-si癡cle psychological framework that questioned the composer's physical and mental well-being. In analyzing these receptions side by side, this book revises the accepted image of Brahms, recovering lost ambiguities in his reception. It resituates him not only in a romanticized priesthood of art, but also within the cultural and gendered discourses overlooked by the absolute music paradigm.

In this book author Cathy Benedict challenges and reframes traditional ways of addressing many of the topics we have come to think of as social justice. Offering practical suggestions for helping both teachers and students think philosophically (and thus critically) about the world around them, each chapter engages with important themes through music making and learning as it presents scenarios, examples of dialogue with students, unit ideas and lesson plans geared toward elementary students (ages 6-14). Im Bereich der Musik ist die Freundschaft von Werner Egk zu Hilde und Heinrich Strobel hierf羹r in mehrfacher Hinsicht symptomatisch: W瓣hrend Egk im Dritten Reich als Komponist und Funktion瓣r an die Spitze des NS-Musiklebens aufstieg, geriet Strobel als Mentor der Musikmoderne in die Defensive und musste mit vielen Kompromissen als Journalist im besetzten Paris seine j羹dische Frau vor der Deportation sch羹tzen. Nach Kriegsende verkehrten sich die Machtverh瓣ltnisse ins Gegenteil: Nun machten die Strobels ihren Status als politisch Verfolgte geltend und Heinrich Strobel setzte sich als Leiter der Musikabteilung im Radio des franz繹sischen Sektors und Herausgeber der legend瓣ren Zeitschrift Melos f羹r den alten Freund ein. Auf Grundlage bisher unbekannten Quellenmaterials ist dieser Fall ein Beispiel f羹r die oft unvermuteten Netzwerke, die auf dem Gebiet der Musik im Zuge von Entnazifizierungsverfahren aktiv wurden. Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Musik - Popul瓣re Musik, Note: 5.2, Berner Fachhochschule, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Till Br繹nner, ein exzellenter Trompeten- und Fl羹gelhornspieler. Wie sieht seine musikalische Sprache aus? Anhand von Transkriptionen untersuche ich die musikalische Sprache von Till Br繹nner, basierend auf seinen klanglichen / technischen wie auch musikalischen Stilmitteln. Mit je einer Studio- und einer Liveaufnahme habe ich zwei Titel ausgew瓣hlt, die sich in der Besetzung und im Tempo unterscheiden. Damit habe ich die M繹glichkeit sein Spiel aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu betrachten. Ein weiteres Ziel ist es jeweils, die Studio- und Liveaufnahmen der beiden Songs gegen羹berzustellen. Ist die Improvisation der Studioaufnahmen im Live-Konzert wiederzuerkennen, oder spielt er eine komplett neue Version? Erh瓣rtet sich wohl der Verdacht, dass Till Br繹nner auf der B羹hne ein anderer Musiker ist als im Studio? Anhand meiner Transkriptionen werde ich auch darauf noch ein Auge drauf werfen. Nicht untersucht wird seine Klang瓣sthetik.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Musik - Sonstiges, Note: 1,5, Hochschule f羹r Musik K繹ln (Fachbereich 5), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ziel der Arbeit ist es, einen theoretischen und didaktischen Zugang zum Begriff der musikalischen Improvisation zu schaffen. Dazu wird Unterrichtsmaterial zum Thema Improvisation verglichen. Des Weiteren werden verschiedene Aspekte von Improvisation beschrieben. Hierzu geh繹ren das Spannungsfeld zwischen Improvisation und Komposition, die Interaktion zwischen den MusikerInnen in der Gruppenimprovisation, der Stellenwert von Improvisationsvorgaben, oder auch die m繹gliche Nutzung des Potentials heterogener Gruppen. Mithilfe der gefundenen Aspekte werden Fragen formuliert, die eine Gegen羹berstellung didaktischer Unterrichtsliteratur von Lilli Friedemann, Wolfgang R羹diger und J羹rgen Terhag erm繹glichen. Im Ergebnis werden die improvisationsdidaktischen Schwerpunkte der Unterrichtsliteratur beschrieben und unterst羹tzende Fragestellungen f羹r Unterrichtsplanungen herausgearbeitet. The collection presents a range of different methodologies and theoretical positions, which results in an eclecticism that aptly demonstrates the breadth of contemporary popular music research.
