And Matt Whitaker gives an in-depth contextualization to these unexpected downfalls.
Vitality and Change in Warlpiri Songs
Warlpiri songs hold together the ceremonies that structure and bind social relationships, and encode detailed information about Warlpiri country, cosmology and kinship. Today, only a small group of the oldest generations has full knowledge of ceremonial songs and their associated meanings, and there is widespread concern about the transmission of these songs to future generations. While musical and cultural change is normal, threats to attrition driven by large-scale external forces including sedentarisation and modernisation put strain on the systems of social relationships that have sustained Warlpiri cultures for millennia. Despite these concerns, songs remain key to Warlpiri identity and cultural heritage.Vitality and Change in Warlpiri Songs draws together insights from senior Warlpiri singers and custodians of these song traditions, profiling a number of senior singers and their views of the changes that they have witnessed over their lifetimes. The chapters in this book are written by Warlpiri custodians in collaboration with researchers who have worked in Warlpiri communities over the last five decades.Spanning interdisciplinary perspectives including musicology, linguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, dance ethnography and gender studies, chapters range from documentation of well-known and large-scale Warlpiri ceremonies, to detailed analysis of smaller-scale public rituals and the motivations behind newer innovative forms of ceremonial expression.Vitality and Change in Warlpiri Songs ultimately uncovers the complexity entailed in maintaining the vital components of classical Warlpiri singing practices and the deep desires that Warlpiri people have to maintain this important element of their cultural identity into the future.

Terrible Freedom
From her childhood in Detroit to her professional career in New York City, American composer Lucia Dlugoszewski (1925-2000) lived a life of relentless creativity as a poet and writer, composer for dance, theater, and film, and, eventually, choreographer. Forging her own path after briefly studying with John Cage and Edgard Var癡se, Dlugoszewski tackled the musical issues of her time. She expanded sonic resources, invented instruments, brought new focus to timbre and texture, collaborated with artists across disciplines, and incorporated spiritual, psychological, and philosophical influences into her work. Remembered today almost solely as the musical director for the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Dlugoszewski's compositional output, writings on aesthetics, creative relationships, and graphic poetry deserve careful examination on their own terms within the history of American experimental music.

Monteverdi's Voices
"Ah, alas!" The "faithful shepherd" Mirtillo's woeful sigh of unrequited love, delivered with outrageous musical dissonances, has rung through the ages since the first publication of Claudio Monteverdi's madrigal "Cruda Amarilli" in 1605. But there is far more to the composer's nine books of madrigals than dissonant progressions--they are an integral part of the intellectual, artistic, and practical worlds of creation and performance in Italian musical and literary culture of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. While Monteverdi is also recognized for his operas and sacred works, it is no surprise that the madrigal dominated his output through his long career in Cremona, Mantua, and Venice. Author Tim Carter illustrates how the composer's wonderfully witty settings of Italian verse ran the gamut from compositions in the traditional polyphonic style for five unaccompanied voices to those in more modern idioms for one or more singers and instruments. Their poets included the major figures of the day--Torquato Tasso, Battista Guarini, and Giambattista Marino--as well as the classics, not least of all Petrarch, with texts that embraced all the current literary genres from lyric through epic to dramatic. Monteverdi also repeatedly asked and answered the fundamental question of any musical setting of poetry concerning the relationship between poetic and musical voice(s). Carter offers a more holistic perspective than has been adopted in the partial studies of Monteverdi's madrigals to date and moves far beyond conventional views of the composer and his work. He considers how Monteverdi engaged with poetry, with sound, and with the performers for whom he was writing. As Carter shows, Monteverdi was irascible, exasperating, and prone to error. Yet his astonishing musical mind was also inventive, playful, and capable of the most extraordinary wit--producing madrigals that continue to invite new approaches both to their study and to their performance.

Background Music Cultures in Finnish Urban Life
This Element focuses on how music is experienced, articulated, and reclaimed in urban commercial environments. Special attention is paid to listeners, spaces, and music, co- and re-produced continuously in their triangular relationship affected by social, legal, economic, and technological factors. The study of the historical development of background music industries, construction of contemporary sonic environments, and individual meaning-making is based on extensive data gathered through interviews, surveys, and fieldwork, and supported by archival research. Due to the Finnish context and the ethnomusicological approach, this study is culture-sensitive, providing a fresh 'factory-to-consumer' perspective on a phenomenon generally understood as industry-lead, behavioral, and global. Deliver Me from Nowhere
The fascinating story behind the making of Bruce Springsteen's most surprising album, Nebraska, revealing its pivotal role in Springsteen's career--in development as a major motion picture starring Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) "Brilliant . . . For fans of American music, Deliver Me from Nowhere makes a great ghost story."--The Boston Globe AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Without Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen might not be who he is today. The natural follow-up to Springsteen's hugely successful album The River should have been the hit-packed Born in the U.S.A. But instead, in 1982, he came out with an album consisting of a series of dark songs he had recorded by himself, for himself. But more than forty years later, Nebraska is arguably Springsteen's most important record--the lasting clue to understanding not just his career as an artist and the vision behind it, but also the man himself. Nebraska is rough and unfinished, recorded on cassette tape with a simple four-track recorder by Springsteen, alone in his bedroom, just as the digital future was announcing itself. And yet Springsteen now considers it his best album. Nebraska expressed a turmoil that was reflective of the mood of the country, but it was also a symptom of trouble in the artist's life, the beginnings of a mental breakdown that Springsteen would only talk about openly decades after the album's release. Warren Zanes spoke to many people involved with making Nebraska, including Bruce Springsteen himself. He also interviewed more than a dozen celebrated artists and musical insiders, from Rosanne Cash to Steven Van Zandt, about their reactions to the album. Zanes interweaves these conversations with inquiries into the myriad cultural touchpoints, including Terrence Malick's Badlands and the short stories of Flannery O'Conner, that influenced Springsteen as he was writing the album's haunting songs. The result is a textured and revelatory account of not only a crucial moment in the career of an icon but also a record that upended all expectations and predicted a home-recording revolution.

Taylor Swift
"My favorite thing in life is writing about life, specifically the parts of life concerning love. Because, as far as I'm concerned, love is absolutely everything"When this book was first published three years ago (2021), the author predicted that when it came to Taylor's career, the best was still to come. Iannis Xenakis
For several years now, I've had this strange, compelling feeling that I had to give life to this new book about my father, which has occupied me in a hidden way for so long. I'm not a musician, musicologist or mathematician; others are and they discuss his work very well from those angles. Now that I'm a mother, I'd like to try and understand how this little boy, then this young man, built himself up from the successive traumas he experienced throughout the first years of his life, which remain omnipresent in his music. I'd like to share the extraordinary journey I was able to take, both in time and in thought, thanks to the reading of his manuscripts, which reveal how, in the space of a few years, he succeeded in controlling the chaos of his emotions through the elaboration of a new music and architecture. Finally, I'd like to offer this personal testimony, so that Iannis Xenakis, beyond the man preoccupied by inaccessible mathematics, appears as the deeply moving man I knew. This book is undoubtedly an echo of the one I wrote with Louise Bourgeois on her work, Louise Bourgeois, l'aveugle guidant l'aveugle, in 1998. Another tutelary figure in my life, thanks to her friendship and trust, she enabled me to truly enter my own artistic universe.Through my father, it is also my own universe that I am questioning today. Finally, I'm happy to announce that this English version of my book contains archives and documents that have never been presented in any book about my father.
Liszt Recomposed
Explores Liszt's compositional processes and methods of revision as the product of the composer's interactions with a large variety of social, cultural, personal and political forces. Franz Liszt (1811-86) is mostly known for his virtuosic piano works, but his compositional achievements in the genre of song have so far been neglected. Many of Liszt's Lieder exist in multiple versions, sometimes radically altered, and many with equal claims to 'authenticity'. This has sometimes been viewed as a barrier to performance and a hindrance to scholarly scrutiny. Nicol獺s Puyan矇 now redresses this imbalance and draws attention to this rich and varied corpus of works. Liszt's songs contain a myriad of intertextual links, not just with the songs of other composers, but also with Liszt's own works in other genres and his own revisions. By focusing on the multi-version songs, the book uncovers how these intertextual relationships have evolved over time. Introducing the concept of "textual fluidity", the book explores Liszt's compositional processes and methods of revision, interpreting the work as being the product of the composer's interactions with a large variety of social, cultural, personal and political forces: for instance, the contemporaneous reception of Liszt's early Lieder, or the change in Liszt's performing and compositional environments from his virtuoso to his Weimar years. The book then offers close readings of selected songs, including the Goethe and Schiller Lieder, by applying the concept of textual fluidity. Its findings will impact the way in which we see Urtext editions, arguing instead for an online fluid-text edition as an ideal resource with which to study Liszt's multi-version compositions.

Mariachi in the Twenty-First Century
This Element contributes to the interdisciplinary study of mariachi, especially in the United States, by focusing on two areas that have yet to receive substantive academic attention: philanthropy and museum studies. In 2011, UNESCO included mariachi music on its list of expressions of intangible cultural heritage. While it is undoubtedly true that mariachi is in many ways intangible, this downplays expressions of its rich material culture and the work of scholars to research mariachi history beyond an emphasis on musical performance. The first section considers mariachi collecting and philanthropy in the US, especially the efforts of Edward E. Marsh and Chris Strachwitz. The second section examines the first major mariachi history museum/exhibit in the US, managed by the Mariachi Scholarship Foundation and housed at Southwestern College in California. Finally, some open areas for research are proposed and appendices concerning mariachi studies in the US are provided.

The Velvet Underground
Though The Velvet Underground were critically and commercially unsuccessful in their time, in ensuing decades they have become a constant touchstone in art rock, punk, post-punk, indie, avant pop and alternative rock. In the 1970s and 80s Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico produced a number of works that traveled a path between art and pop. In 1993 the original band members of Reed, Cale, Morrison and Tucker briefly reunited for live appearances, and afterwards Reed, Cale and briefly Tucker, continued to produce music that travelled the idiosyncratic path begun in New York in the mid-1960s. The influence of the band and band members, mediated and promoted through famous fans such as David Bowie and Brian Eno, seems only to have expanded since the late 1960s. In 1996 the Velvet Underground were in inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, demonstrating how far the band had traveled in 30 years from an avant-garde cult to the mainstream recognition of their key contributions to popular music. In these collected essays, Pattie and Albiez present the first academic book-length collection on The Velvet Underground. The book covers a range of topics including the band's relationship to US literature, to youth and cultural movements of the 1960s and beyond and to European culture - and examines these contexts from the 1960s through to the present day.

Ubuntu Fusion Music
*Ubuntu Fusion Music received a Certificate of Merit in the category Best History in Recorded Jazz at the 2025 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence* In exploring heterogeneous intersections between jazz, rock, ethnic, and world music, this book answers the question as to whether fusion represents a style on its own or whether it is the base for combining diverse music sources. Social, political, and geographical divides reflected in post-communist, capitalist, and third worlds, and in democratic and dictatorial regimes have compelled substantial changes in musicians' thinking. The book examines ethnic inspirations in American jazz, Slovak-American jazz, young French bands with diverse fusion identities, Hungarian and Czech progressive rock, Czech world music and brass bands, American psychedelic rock, Italian rock, and in a Romani-Slovak-Norwegian music project. New compositional and improvisational trends, and hybrid fusions in contemporary music embrace the African philosophy of ubuntu, which denotes feelings of mutual belonging free of prejudices against racial origins, social inequalities, or other cultural characteristics.
The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature

The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature addresses this relationship as a significant contribution to the burgeoning field of word and music studies.

Hospital Costs
The Brazilian state has thousands of hospital institutions of various sizes and corporate arrangements. In many cities, only one of these units is responsible for providing uninterrupted health care. According to the Federal Constitution, health is a fundamental right. Considering the social relevance that these organizations represent, and given that they are all companies. The need arises for a management analysis. The purpose of accounting science is to measure a company's financial and economic capacity and it uses a huge range of tools capable of clearly demonstrating the direction of a business. One of these tools is cost accounting. It is extremely important and widely used to manage expenses. Due to their complexity, hospitals are expensive and so this study aims to contribute to the formulation of a cost methodology for this sector based on understanding and managing the resources consumed by these institutions.
Making it up as you go Along
Built on a series of light-hearted Facebook accounts of his time in the music business, 'Making it up as you go Along' is the story of Bill MacCormick's journey through the outer reaches of the music business in the 1960s and 70s. Brought up on an early teenage musical diet of Beethoven, Brahms, the Beatles, Stax, and Tamla Motown, an accidental meeting with Robert Wyatt and the newly formed Soft Machine transformed his world view. Now, radically influenced by the Softs, the Mothers of Invention, Stravinsky, and Charlie Mingus, it describes his first faltering steps to musical anonymity with school friend and psychedelic guitar titan, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, and their school band, Pooh and the Ostrich Feather. An 'accidental' bass player with failed prog rock combo Quiet Sun, he somehow survived to play, sometimes tour, and record with: Robert Wyatt in Matching Mole and on his album 'Ruth is Stranger than Richard'; Se簽or Manzanera on his solo albums 'Diamond Head', 'Listen Now' and 'K-Scope';with a briefly re-formed Quiet Sun on their album 'Mainstream'; on two Brian Eno albums; with the short-lived 801 which spawned the highly acclaimed 801 Live album; and finally with the doomed and doom-laden Random Hold whose guitarist, David Rhodes, later worked (and works) extensively with Peter Gabriel. On the way, the book touches on the social and political issues which influenced the lyrics he and his late brother, and author of 'Revolution in the Head', Ian MacDonald, contributed to Phil Manzanera's 70s albums. It contains pen portraits and, sadly for some, the obituaries of several musicians Bill met along the way: Phil Miller, Dave MacRae, Hugh Hopper, Gary Windo, Francis Monkman, Lloyd Watson, David Ferguson and more. And, in appendices too numerous to mention, you may enjoy the press coverage, good and bad, the various projects generated.
Pathologies in Construction Works
Construction in Brazil has been growing in such a way that quantity is often more important than quality. Most of the buildings being constructed today are starting to show pathologies before the minimum expected period, reducing the performance and useful life of the structure. Professionals specialising in pathologies have the task of analysing pathological manifestations by gathering the necessary information for a diagnosis, in which they hypothesise the possible causes of a pathology. This work aims to compare pathologies found in newly delivered buildings with structures that have been in use for years by analysing the causes and effects of pathological manifestations found in the structure.
Synthetic banana seeds
Banana growing is an activity of great social and economic importance in Brazil, which ranks fifth in world production. The production of synthetic seeds has become promising for micropropagation and in vitro conservation. The aim of this work was to analyse the conversion and growth of banana 'Prata-an瓊' clone Gorutuba micro-sprouts from synthetic seeds in MS culture medium and vermiculite, testing different substrates and concentrations of BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) associated with ANA (naphthalene acetic acid) in the constitution of its capsule. The micro-sprouts were immersed in a sodium alginate matrix (3%) and dripped into a CaCl2. 2H2O solution (100 mM) for complexation and then into a KNO3 solution (100 mM) for decomplexation. The experimental design was entirely randomised in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme (substrate x BAP concentrations), containing different substrates (MS culture medium and vermiculite) and different concentrations of BAP (2.22; 4.44; 6.66; 8.88 and 13.32 μmol L-1) associated with ANA (naphthalene acetic acid) 0.54 μmol L-1, totalling 10 treatments, with 4 replicates, each replicate containing 5 seeds.
