By the end of the 1960s, explicit sex and graphic violence had both become accepted in the mainstream. How can philosophy harness the potential of audiovisual media - being more formally multidimensional than text-only - to conceptualize with greater precision and depth? The book focuses on women's representations and explores how the gender roles were modified throughout the decade according to the new social and political ideals employing the discourse analysis, postcolonial perspectives and psychoanalytical feminist film theories.Bringing together Soviet Georgia's most important films of the period, the book inspects the female body's symbolic function in the aspects of class dichotomy and ethnic hierarchies. It analyzes the construction of the 'Oriental other' by the Russian colonial imagination and its subsequent dismantling in the context of the Caucasus's de-Orientalization. It also examines the characteristics embodied by the 'heroine' and 'villain' of the new social order-the New Soviet Woman and the NEPwoman-and explores women's transformation within the revolutionary setting during the decade. In the light of Bolsheviks' preoccupation and endeavour to improve 'woman question', the book surveys to what extent women's screen images were emancipated and whatthe functional meaning of this emancipation was in the given context; how the new ideals of the New Soviet woman were inscribed in the period's films and how these ideals were combined with Georgian nationality.

The public's perception of the military is shaped through a variety of means, one of which is the feature film showing at the local theater. The increase in population and the decrease in the size of the military have greatly enlarged the percent of the population that are not associated with a serviceperson or a veteran of one of the services. Their only means of obtaining information on the status and professionalism of the military is through what they are fed via the media. The movies produced by filmmakers within the United States affect the recruiting and public perception of the military through their portrayal of events, missions, and personnel. It is important for the Department of Defense and those serving to understand the significance that these films can have on the audience. Films are studied for historical accuracy, the making of the film to include Department of Defense assistance and input, and the portrayal of the soldiers, both officers and enlisted. Liminal Noir in Classical World Cinema
While few can deny its incalculable influence on popular filmmaking during and after World War II, film noir has been and remains one of the most contentious categories of cinema, involving more debates than consensus about what constitutes a noir. This collection explores the amorphous parameters of this dark cinematic phenomenon by utilising an expanded, nuanced definition of film noir, which reaches beyond traditional conceptions of genre, style, and cycle to examine its complex international origins and emphasis on issues of liminality. Through illuminating case studies of single films from nations including Argentina, the former Czechoslovakia, France, Great Britain, Poland, Spain, and the US, authors consider elements of genre hybridity, border crossing, boundary breaching, and other signifiers of liminality to reassess classical-era films that defy conventional generic and stylistic categorisation.

This is the first book-length academic study of Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier's films. The book, written by an author who has followed his work closely for ten years, offers an introduction to all five feature films, from his debut Reprise (2006) to his recent success The Worst Person in the Word (2021). The book investigates the style and themes of Trier's films through a prologue, nine chapters, and an epilogue. The main section of the book looks closely at selected tropes across Trier's films, such as memory, time, and identity, as well as his style and his innovative use of montage, voice-over and settings. The prologue place Trier in contemporary Norwegian cinema and discuss his different inspirations and collaborations. An interview with Joachim Trier makes up the epilogue of the book.

This book offers a transnational, internationalist-feminist approach to the oeuvre of award-winning director, writer, and curator, Annemarie Jacir.Palestinian film culture is unique due to its geopolitical circumstances, including continued colonialism and occupation, and the refugeeship of its citizens. The scholarship on the politics of film and its role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - including activist work, international solidarity films, and work on Palestinian documentaries - is usually defined by historical overviews of geopolitical events and developments. In contrast, this book offers an auteur-focused study of a global artist influenced by but not limited to the political discourse surrounding the Occupied Palestinian Territories.Jacir is a Palestinian woman whose work is recognised globally as innovative, politically challenging, and genre-crossing.
