Piano Development (PD) is, throughout the PMP Development Areas, the main framework around which all other Development Areas orbit; it has been conceived to help piano teachers achieve a profound view of their student's improvements while guiding them throughout the higher levels of piano playing.PD is divided into a first set of 20 levels and the student should be working on two different and consecutive levels at the same time.The general complexity expressed at each level of PD does not have to be comparable to the difficulty of other areas simultaneously studied, especially if related to repertoire. Indeed, the student may find him/herself studying a repertoire piece that is much more difficult than is expressed by the level required in PD.At this level all melodic lines are played by one hand at the time with no superimposition of a second melody or any other kind of melodic structure.Some piecese will be played exclusevely with one hand while others will require the use of both hands: in this case the melody will pass from one hand to the other; a dotted line connecting the melody through the two staves will help visualizing the correct melodic outline. A melodic line passing from one hand to the other can be found in many cases in the keyboard literature; as an example, the inner voice (or voices) from a fugue, generally with more than two parts, may be performed alternately by the two hands.When playing a melody without a contrapunctual line the student's inner hearing and sense of rhythm and control of durations4 will consistently develope; consequentely a sense of metre will strongly improve.By following the PMP principles the student will be working on PD L1 or PD L3 together with this level; in the latter case, the student will be dealing with a mixed set of pieces composed for two hands playing simultaneously as well as pieces for two hands performing one only melody.The introduction comprises directions for using this book, a description of all rhythmic patterns and time signatures found in the pieces and a description of the minimum prerequisites eventually needed for effectively starting this book. The Modern Brass Ensemble in Twentieth-Century Britain
The first study of the performance practice, repertoire and context of the modern 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Whereas the British 'brass band' originated in the nineteenth century and rapidly developed into a nationwide working-class movement, the perceived modern 'brass ensemble' has a less clear foundation and identity. This book is the first to focus exclusively on the performance, practice, repertoire and context of the 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Following World War II, the brass quintet and other orchestral groupings emerged in the United States and Europe, with musical customs established by professional players playing orchestral instruments. These groups initially played a combination of the music of Gabrieli and his contemporaries as well as newly commissioned works. By the late twentieth century, however, repertory spanned works by Elliott Carter, Maxwell Davies and Lutoslawski, together with music that integrated jazz, commercial elements, and landmark transcriptions. At the book's heart is the story of the London-based, internationally acclaimed, Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. But this is not a story of one ensemble, as the 'brass ensemble' can be defined in several forms. Adventures of a Piano Technician
In November of 1987 I completed an intense course with the American School of Piano Tuning and was awarded a Certificate of Completion and Diploma on the 21st day of the month. I Immediately started looking forward to tuning my first piano.The first tuning after my accreditation and licensing with the State of Virginia was one of my wife's students. I had no confidence in those early days. I returned to two different customer homes to re-tune as I didn't feel satisfied with the work. Once I returned (on the same day) to a West Point nursing home as I felt the repairs were not up to a good standard. Repairs, string replacements, etc. fell naturally into place as I became familiar with the pianos of my customer base. A business license with the State of Virginia is important. This may be done at the County office. Only once as a piano technician was I asked by a customer if I had a local business license. The gentleman was under the impression that you needed a license in every town in which you worked. I explained that the license covered the State of Virginia. Business cards may be significant in building a customer base. An example of this is a contract I acquired with Riverside hospital to tune and clean the Grand Piano in their lobby. During the process I would leave a small stack of business cards on the piano to be available as folk stopped by to watch my work. Tuning a piano in the lobby of Costco and placing my business cards there as well is another example of their importance. Business cards are a useful method anytime a technician is tuning in a public place. In those early days I was working a full-time job and tuning pianos on the evenings and weekends. Scheduled tunings during the week were after 5:00 p.m. with several more on Saturdays. I worked this schedule from 1987 until September 2000 when I retired from the City of Newport News. I had a delightful career tuning and working on pianos. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I've made many good friends with fond memories.The mileage on my car attest to the wide area of my customers' base. In this new transcription I have decided to elaborate for the organ the last two (linked) movements of his Second Symphony op. 12 (1908-1910): the fourth, Finale, and the fifth, Epilogo (Epilogue). These are perhaps the movements more related to Mahler's world that includes both a march with a grotesque effect that heralds what will become characteristic much later in Shostakovich, as well a very expressive Adagio ending (as it happens for instance in Mahler's Third Symphony). Music that changes continuously and that in a very Mahlerian act, at the height of despair and drama, transcends in a triumphal solution.

The Viola d’Amore
This book provides the first scholarly history of the viola d'amore, a popular bowed string instrument of the Baroque era, with a unique tone produced by a set of metal sympathetic strings. Composers like Bach made use of the viola d'amore for its particular sound, but the instrument subsequently fell out of fashion amid orchestral standardisation, only to see a revival as interest in early music and historical performance grew. Drawing on literary accounts, iconography, and surviving instruments, this study examines the origins and development of this eye-catching string instrument in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It explores the rich variation of designs displayed in extant viola d'amore specimens, both as originally constructed and as a result of conversion and repair. The viola d'amore is then set into the wider context of Elizabethan England's development of instruments with wire strings, and its legacy in the form of the baryton which emerged in the early seventeenth century, followed by a look at the viola d'amore's own nomenclatorial and organological influence. The book closes with a discussion of the viola d'amore's revival, and its use and manufacture today. Offering insights for organological research and historical performance practice, this study enhances our knowledge of both the viola d'amore and its wider family of instruments.
