The Modern Brass Ensemble in Twentieth-Century Britain
The first study of the performance practice, repertoire and context of the modern 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Whereas the British 'brass band' originated in the nineteenth century and rapidly developed into a nationwide working-class movement, the perceived modern 'brass ensemble' has a less clear foundation and identity. This book is the first to focus exclusively on the performance, practice, repertoire and context of the 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Following World War II, the brass quintet and other orchestral groupings emerged in the United States and Europe, with musical customs established by professional players playing orchestral instruments. These groups initially played a combination of the music of Gabrieli and his contemporaries as well as newly commissioned works. By the late twentieth century, however, repertory spanned works by Elliott Carter, Maxwell Davies and Lutoslawski, together with music that integrated jazz, commercial elements, and landmark transcriptions. At the book's heart is the story of the London-based, internationally acclaimed, Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. But this is not a story of one ensemble, as the 'brass ensemble' can be defined in several forms. The Modern Brass Ensemble in Twentieth-Century Britain offers a comprehensive account by an author and performer who was involved in many of the key developments of the modern 'brass ensemble'.

The Great Vogue for the Guitar in Western Europe
The first book devoted to the composers, instrument makers and amateur players who advanced the great guitar vogue throughout Western Europe during the early decades of the nineteenth century. Contemporary critics viewed the fashion for the guitar with sheer hostility, seeing in it a rejection of true musical value. After all, such trends advanced against the grain of mainstream musical developments of ground-breaking (often Austro-German) repertoire for standard instruments. Yet amateur musicians throughout Europe persisted; many instruments were built to meet the demand, a substantial volume of music was published for amateurs to play, and soloist-composers moved freely between European cities. This book follows these lines of travel venturing as far as Moscow, and visiting all the great musical cities of the period, from London to Vienna, Madrid to Naples. The first section of the book looks at eighteenth-century precedents, the instrument - its makers and owners, amateur and professional musicians, printing and publishing, pedagogy, as well as aspects of repertoire. The second section explores the extensive repertoire for accompanied song and chamber music. A final substantive section assembles chapters on a wide array of the most significant soloist-composers of the time. The chapters evoke the guitar milieu in the various cities where each composer-player worked and offer a discussion of some representative works. This book, bringing together an international tally of contributors and never before examined sources, will be of interest to devotees of the guitar, as well as music historians of the Romantic period.

Adventures of a Piano Technician
In November of 1987 I completed an intense course with the American School of Piano Tuning and was awarded a Certificate of Completion and Diploma on the 21st day of the month. I Immediately started looking forward to tuning my first piano. The first tuning after my accreditation and licensing with the State of Virginia was one of my wife's students. I had no confidence in those early days. I returned to two different customer homes to re-tune as I didn't feel satisfied with the work. Once I returned (on the same day) to a West Point nursing home as I felt the repairs were not up to a good standard. Repairs, string replacements, etc. fell naturally into place as I became familiar with the pianos of my customer base. A business license with the State of Virginia is important. This may be done at the County office. Only once as a piano technician was I asked by a customer if I had a local business license. The gentleman was under the impression that you needed a license in every town in which you worked. I explained that the license covered the State of Virginia. Business cards may be significant in building a customer base. An example of this is a contract I acquired with Riverside hospital to tune and clean the Grand Piano in their lobby. During the process I would leave a small stack of business cards on the piano to be available as folk stopped by to watch my work. Tuning a piano in the lobby of Costco and placing my business cards there as well is another example of their importance. Business cards are a useful method anytime a technician is tuning in a public place. In those early days I was working a full-time job and tuning pianos on the evenings and weekends. Scheduled tunings during the week were after 5:00 p.m. with several more on Saturdays. I worked this schedule from 1987 until September 2000 when I retired from the City of Newport News. I had a delightful career tuning and working on pianos. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I've made many good friends with fond memories. The mileage on my car attest to the wide area of my customers' base. The areas of coverage included Eastern Shore, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Smithfield, Williamsburg, Richmond, Hopewell, Gloucester, York County, New Kent County, Deltaville and Matthews County.
A Singing Approach to Horn Playing
In A Singing Approach to Horn Playing, author and renowned teacher-musician Natalie Douglass Grana develops the fundamental sense of pitch that is essential to play the horn. The book begins with simple songs to sing on solf癡ge, buzz on the mouthpiece, and play on the horn, followed by inner hearing, transposition, and polyphonic exercises. Readers learn to fluidly hear the notes on the page before playing them, through sequential exercises with songs, improvisation, stick notation, and duets. Training continues with progressively challenging melodies, including canons as well as vocal etudes (solfeggi) like those of Giuseppe Concone. Finally, hornists apply their musicianship skills to standard etude, solo, and orchestral horn repertoire. Horn parts are provided with important lines from the orchestra or accompaniment, transposed to also be sung and played on the horn. Accompanying rhythmic and harmonic exercises enable performers to learn to hear the parts together as they play. Through a wide-ranging synthesis of theory, practical advice, and exercises, Douglass Grana puts forth a crucial guide for a new generation of horn players and burgeoning musicians seeking to improve and perfect their sense of pitch.
21st Century Guitar
In the 21st Century, the guitar, as both a material object and tool for artistic expression, continues to be reimagined and reinvented. From simple adaptations or modifications made by performers themselves, to custom-made instruments commissioned to fulfil specific functions, to the mass production of new lines of commercially available instruments, the extant and emergent forms of this much-loved musical instrument vary perhaps more than ever before. As guitars sporting multiple necks, a greater number of strings, and additional frets become increasingly common, so too do those with reduced registers, fewer strings, and fretless fingerboards. Furthermore, as we approach the mark of the first quarter-century, the role of technology in relation to the guitar's protean nature is proving key, from the use of external effects units to synergies with computers and AR headsets. Such wide-ranging evolutions and augmentations of the guitar reflect the advancing creative and expressive needs of the modern guitarist and offer myriad new affordances. 21st Century Guitar examines the diverse physical manifestations of the guitar across the modern performative landscape through a series of essays and interviews. Academics, performers and dual-practitioners provide significant insights into the rich array of guitar-based performance practices emerging and thriving in this century, inviting a reassessment of the guitar's identity, physicality and sound-creating possibilities.
Play It Again
Play It Again is the Guardian editor's account of a remarkable musical challenge during an extraordinary year for news. As editor of the Guardian, one of the world's foremost newspapers, Alan Rusbridger abides by the relentless twenty-four-hour news cycle. But increasingly in midlife, he feels the gravitational pull of music--especially the piano. He sets himself a formidable challenge: to fluently learn Chopin's magnificent Ballade No. 1 in G minor, arguably one of the most difficult Romantic compositions in the repertory. With pyrotechnic passages that require feats of memory, dexterity, and power, the piece is one that causes alarm even in battle-hardened concert pianists. He gives himself a year. Under ideal circumstances, this would have been a daunting task. But the particular year Rusbridger chooses turns out to be one of frenetic intensity. As he writes in his introduction, "Perhaps if I'd known then what else would soon be happening in my day job, I might have had second thoughts. For it would transpire that, at the same time, I would be steering the Guardian through one of the most dramatic years in its history." It was a year that began with WikiLeaks' massive dump of state secrets and ended with the Guardian's revelations about widespread phone hacking at News of the World. "In between, there were the Japanese tsunami, the Arab Spring, the English riots . . . and the death of Osama Bin Laden," writes Rusbridger. The test would be to "nibble out" twenty minutes per day to do something totally unrelated to the above. Rusbridger's description of mastering the Ballade is hugely engaging, yet his subject is clearly larger than any one piece of classical music. Play It Again deals with focus, discipline, and desire but is, above all, about the sanctity of one's inner life in a world dominated by deadlines and distractions. What will you do with your twenty minutes?

Finale ed Epilogo
ALFREDO CASELLA: this is a name of a composer that unfortunately does not yet enjoy, in the musical world, the right place for importance in the history of music. In this new transcription I have decided to elaborate for the organ the last two (linked) movements of his Second Symphony op. 12 (1908-1910): the fourth, Finale, and the fifth, Epilogo (Epilogue). These are perhaps the movements more related to Mahler's world that includes both a march with a grotesque effect that heralds what will become characteristic much later in Shostakovich, as well a very expressive Adagio ending (as it happens for instance in Mahler's Third Symphony). Music that changes continuously and that in a very Mahlerian act, at the height of despair and drama, transcends in a triumphal solution.

Piano Chords One
Piano Chords One is a book for beginners, yes, but it's also for those who took classical piano lessons and wished they had learned more about chord theory. How great would it be to hear a song on the radio and be able to play it without needing the notes written out? Functional Skills for Pianists addresses the need for a comprehensive anthology of musical examples in a wide variety of styles (Baroque through Modern) for keyboard majors (performance, pedagogy, collaborative pianists), keyboard principals (music education, music therapy, music business, church music, liberal arts majors), and composition/theory students. Its Topical structure allows teachers the freedom to design lessons that meet varied abilities and needs of students. It is Comprehensive on two levels: 1) it includes introductory guidelines on fundamentals followed by numerous examples that are sequenced from beginning through advanced levels and 2) while it covers the development of skills found in beginning texts, it extends to more demanding sight reading material and substantive sections on figured bass realization and jazz/popular music harmonization. Currently, there is not a book on the market that covers such a wide variety and range of functional keyboard skills.

Piano Development L5
A comprehensive and effective programme must consider all of the possible sectors in which the student's skills and competence can develop, which fall into two main categories: musicianship and instrumental skills. The Music Method Project (MusMP) comprises the Piano Method Project (PMP), related to the development of instrumental skills, and the Musicianship Method Project (MMP), related to musicianship development. Piano Development (PD) is a Development Area of PMP and is divided into a first set of 20 levels. PD consists of short pieces that the student will have to prepare in a very short time term (VST as in the MusMP conceived Time Terms), usually for the following lesson. The general complexity expressed at each level of PD does not have to be comparable to the difficulty of other areas simultaneously studied, especially if related to repertoire. Indeed, the student may find him/herself studying a repertoire piece that is much more difficult than is expressed by the level required in PD: this would be perfectly appropriate while the contrary would, surely be unfitting. The time term of PD is classified as VST while a repertoire piece may be classified from MT to VLT (Medium Term to Very Long Term); therefore, the latter can be more complex. There is no strict way in which to use this book; it can be adopted for various purposes accordingly. Nevertheless, its main purpose is to be part of the PMP. The introduction comprises directions for using this book, a description of all rhythmic patterns and time signatures found in the pieces and a description of the minimum prerequisites eventually needed for effectively starting this book. More specific direction for the teacher, related to a methodological approach to the pieces are also included; topics taken into consideration are: Accidentals Hand Positions Metronome Improvising Chamber Music Key Signatures Moving to a New Piece Moving to a New Level Monitoring

Piano Development L6
Piano Development (PD) is, throughout the PMP Development Areas, the main framework around which all other Development Areas orbit; it has been conceived to help piano teachers achieve a profound view of their student's improvements while guiding them throughout the higher levels of piano playing.PD is divided into a first set of 20 levels and the student should be working on two different and consecutive levels at the same time. The general complexity expressed at each level of PD does not have to be comparable to the difficulty of other areas simultaneously studied, especially if related to repertoire. Indeed, the student may find him/herself studying a repertoire piece that is much more difficult than is expressed by the level required in PD.At this level all melodic lines are played by one hand at the time with no superimposition of a second melody or any other kind of melodic structure. Very rarely a second voice is added, like in no. 42, or at the endings of nos. 10, 11, 14, 17, 22, 28, 30, 32, 34, 38, 39, 44 and 47; nos. 27 and 50 require playing two voices within one hand. When the second voice is written with smaller notes it may not be played at all. Some piecese will be played exclusevely with one hand while others will require the use of both hands: in this case the melody will pass from one hand to the other; a dotted line connecting the melody through the two staves will help visualizing the correct melodic outline. A melodic line passing from one hand to the other can be found in many cases in the keyboard literature; as an example, the inner voice (or voices) from a fugue, generally with more than two parts, may be performed alternately by the two hands. When playing a melody without a contrapunctual line the student's inner hearing and sense of rhythm and duration will consistently develope; consequentely a sense of metre will strongly improve.By following the PMP principles the student will be working on PD L5 or PD L7 together with this level; in such a case the student will be dealing with a mixed set of pieces composed for two hands playing simultaneously as well as pieces for two hands performing one only melody. The introduction comprises directions for using this book, a description of all rhythmic patterns and time signatures found in the pieces and a description of the minimum prerequisites eventually needed for effectively starting this book. More specific direction for the teacher, related to a methodological approach to the pieces are also included; topics taken into consideration are: AccidentalsHand positionsMetronomeFinding hand positions and improvising prior to practicing each pieceImprovising chamber musicKey signaturesMoving to a new pieceMoving to a new levelMonitoring

Snare Drum Development L1
A comprehensive and effective programme must consider all of the possible sectors in which the student's skills and competence can develop, which fall into two main categories: musicianship and instrumental skills. The Music Method Project (MusMP) comprises the Percussion Method Project (PercMP), related to the development of instrumental skills, and the Musicianship Method Project (MMP), related to musicianship development. Snare Drum Development (SDD) and Drumset Development (DD) are, throughout the PercMP Development Areas, the main framework around which all other Development Areas orbit; these areas have been conceived to help percussion and drum teachers achieve a profound view of their student's improvements while guiding them throughout the higher levels of drum playing. SDD consists of short pieces that the student will have to prepare in a very short time term (VST as in the MusMP conceived Time Terms), usually for the following lesson. The general complexity expressed at each level of SDD does not have to be comparable to the difficulty of other areas simultaneously studied, especially if related to repertoire. Indeed, the student may find him/herself studying a repertoire piece that is much more difficult than is expressed by the level required in SDD: this would be perfectly appropriate while the contrary would surely be unfitting. The time term of SDD is classified as VST while a repertoire piece may be classified from MT to VLT; therefore, the latter can be more complex. There is no strict way for using this book, which can be adopted according to various purposes. Nevertheless, its mayn purpose is that to be part of the Snare Drum Development (SDD) within the Percussion Method Project (PercMP). The introduction comprises directions for using this book, a description of all rhythmic patterns and time signatures found in the pieces. More specific direction for the teacher, related to a methodological approach to the pieces are also included; topics taken into consideration are: Note Reading, R & L Indications, Rudiments and Grip Styles Metronome Improvising Chamber Music Moving to a New Piece Monitoring
Drum Set Development L1
Drum Set Development (DD) and Snare Drum Development (SDD) are, throughout the PercMP Development Areas, the main framework around which all other Development Areas orbit; these areas have been conceived to help percussion and drum teachers achieve a profound view of their student's improvements while guiding them throughout the higher levels of drum playing. The student, while studying DD, should be simultaneously working on SDD: the level of DD tackled, should be one less than SDD's thus, when beginning the second level of SDD, the level of DD expressed in this book can be introduced. As progress is made, a new Development Area may be added: the more areas the student manages, the more profoundly competence and skills will grow; nonetheless, SDD and DD should be the only Development Areas on which the student will be working constantly. DD consists of short pieces that the student will have to prepare for the following lesson; how these pieces will be mastered is an issue to be pre-emptively clarified in order to positively monitor the student's progress. Therefore, the teacher will have to determine in advance which criteria to adopt when evaluating each piece and assigning a new one in its place. The general complexity expressed at each level of DD does not have to be comparable to the difficulty of other areas simultaneously studied, especially if related to repertoire. Indeed, the student may find him/herself studying a repertoire piece that is much more difficult than is expressed by the level required in DD: this would be perfectly appropriate while the contrary would surely be unfitting. The time term of DD is classified as VST while a repertoire piece may be classified from MT to VLT; therefore, the latter can be more complex. In the pieces throughout all levels of DD, rhythmic patterns and time signatures are gradually introduced: technical skills, rhythmic skills and a sense of meter will therefore gradually improve. When composing these works, one of the main objectives was to supply both students and teachers with pieces in which the formal structures would well be identifiable, thus stimulating an at- titude to analysing the pieces before studying them. Developing the ability to identify periods, phrases and motifs will surely allow the student to achieve a higher level of awareness; consequently, a higher degree of motivation for increasing one's technical skills will strongly improve. While performing these pieces the student will therefore not find him/herself playing a series of grooves, where a rhythmic motif or phrase is constantly repeated throughout the piece, but will be required to interpret, by considering the drum set as a solo instrument, pieces with a musical meaning in their whole, even though they may - at a very first level - be only of eight measures long. Each chapter ends with some exercises identified by roman numerals: these are provided as warm-up exercises to be kept for as long as the student will be tackling the pieces included in the same chapter.
Partitas for Mandora - Volume 2 Arranged For Guitar
Here are delightful partitas originally composed for the mandora or gallichone. The Mandora or Gallichone generally refers to a bass lute from the 1700s, with a vibrating string length of 72 centimeters or greater, used in Germany and Bohemia. It could be either single- or double-strung. The mandora often had only 6 courses, resulting in a simpler technique than the complex and difficult 13-course lute which was popular during the Baroque Era, so was more suitable for amateur players. Similar instruments were also in use in northern Italy. The Partitas for Madora included here had between four and nine parts in each, often beginning with an Aria or an "Entr矇e". Other parts of the Partita might be an Allegro, Andante, Menuet, Rigaudon, Scherzo and Gigue. Some of the pieces that follow are approachable to the beginning or intermediate performer, others will push the player to the limits of his technique.

Diatonic Chords / Arpeggios
Diatonic Chords / Arpeggios Exercises For Piano / Keyboard In All 12 Keys This short book shows all the diatonic chords for every major scale with diatonic arpeggio exercises in both 4/4 and 6/8. Similar exercises are also included in the key of A minor. So, what exactly are diatonic chords and why do I need to learn them? Most people just learn all the scales as finger exercises (which is good) but never really get to fully understand them i.e. the intervals and chords within each scale. The diatonic chords are the chords which are derived from the notes of the scale and are therefore all related. This is fully explained in the book. Understanding exactly which chords fit with each scale is vitally important for improvisation, composition, and theoretical understanding. Practicing the exercises herein will not only give you an advanced understanding of every scale but will also benefit your finger technique. Do I need to read music to learn these? Well, it certainly helps as all the exercises are written in music notation. Having said this in every case there is a chord diagram (in keyboard view) below each arpeggio as well as the chord names, except for the very last chord in each sequence which is always the 'tonic chord' and the same as the first one. So, yes you could still learn from this book without reading music, by following the chord diagrams instead of the music. Additionally there are audio links in the pdf digital version.
