Suite in C Minor Bwv 997 Transcribed for Cello Solo
(EMB). Several transcripts have been made of Johann Sebastian Bach's lute works over the past 150 years. Due to the simultaneous harmonic and melodic character of the lute and the lute harpsichord, favored by Bach, these usually evoke the original sound with a combination of several instruments (for example, Zoltan Kodaly's transcription of the lute prelude in C minor for cello and piano). The joint work of cellist Tamas Zetenyi (*1985) and composer Marcell Dargay (*1980) is exceptional in that respect that it transfers all movements of the lute suite in C minor, including the fugue, to a single cello. This song is a rondo, a special style of song written in ABACA form. The lively A section starts and ends the piece, with the B and C sections alternating between them. In traditional dance, the dance steps would always be the same for each of the A sections and they would change for the new melodies presented in the B and C sections. The strong left-hand accompaniment represents the traditional bodhr獺n drum that would accompany the dancers.
