From long-haired 'Fleshly Poets' to intense, 'ultra pre-Raphaelite' artists, few stylistic movements in the history of art and literature have provoked the imagination and indignation of British playwrights as much as the Aesthetic Movement. During an intense and short-lived period from 1877 to 1881, the London stage saw fierce competition as playwrights and theatre managers raced to capture the zeitgeist, capitalizing on the unorthodox, eccentric and highly theatrical proponents of the Aesthetic Movement. The 'quite too utterly utter' Apostles of this new school were satirized to such an extent that the Illustrated London News (1881) complained that the London stage was 'thickly sown over with a crop of lilies and sunflowers', with 'aesthetes in every burlesque and comic opera produced'. Paul easily became the greatest apostle of all time.In scriptures, there are so many other persons whom God used, even though they were broken. People like Moses, David, Solomon, and Rahab show us how God is still willing to use us after we have messed up. No matter what broken state we're in, we are never beyond God's reach. We are never so far gone that God can't make us effective for His purpose. It is us as human beings who judge each other by our own personal standards and write people off as being unacceptable.I messed up badly during ministry, but I am convinced that God still has a purpose for me and wants to continue to use me in ministry. He has already been demonstrating this to me in a clear, strong, and meaningful way.When we are broken or feel that we have messed up, that is not the time to worry about what others may do or say since other humans can make us feel worse. Equally, it is not the time to give up and turn away from God. Rather, it is the time to draw nearer to God. That is when we should seek God all the more for direction, clarity, help, and strength. It's the time when we should, like David, ask God to create a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within us and restore us into the joy of His salvation.
A Midsummer Night's Awakening

Quiet Hauntings
For reasons that still remain a mystery, author Simon Kurt Unsworth decided to create a theatrical version of several of his short stories and to then help put on the production. Several months of confusion followed, culminating in three performances of what had become known as Quiet Hauntings. Over the course of four years, Gary and a team of story gatherers went all over the country with their dictaphones speaking to people about the Big Yin. Many of them were experts, many his biggest fans, many delighted to recount the time they met, if only for a brief moment; for many he is the greatest of all time. But no matter what they thought, no one was short of things to say about him. Gary then took this huge collection of moving and hilarious tales and turned them into Dear Billy, a joyous piece of theatre celebrating the Big Yin and what he means to us. The production was written and performed by Gary McNair and directed by Joe Douglas. National Theatre of Scotland originally toured the production around Scotland in 2023. This edition was published to coincide with the second National Theatre of Scotland tour and subsequent run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival from May-August 2024.

Democracy, Theatre and Performance
Democracy, argues David Wiles, is actually a form of theatre. In making his case, the author deftly investigates orators at the foundational moments of ancient and modern democracy, demonstrating how their performative skills were used to try to create a better world. People often complain about demagogues, or wish that politicians might be more sincere. But to do good, politicians (paradoxically) must be hypocrites - or actors. Moving from Athens to Indian independence via three great revolutions - in Puritan England, republican France and liberal America - the book opens up larger questions about the nature of democracy. When in the classical past Plato condemned rhetoric, the only alternative he could offer was authoritarianism. Gathered on a stormy evening at Worthington Manor to celebrate Edward's 50th birthday are his attractive wife, her playboy brother, Edward's befuddled older sister, his ex-wife and his daughter, a college student. Also present are his shady lawyer and his uptight business manager, with his giddy wife and sexy southern secretary, as well as the butler, the housekeeper, the maid and the cook. Each has a motive that is barely established when the lights go out! Seconds later, they come back on to reveal the knife for the birthday cake protruding from Edward's back. In Act II, the police detective (also played by Walter) investigates, eventually allowing the audience to question or accuse suspects before the killer's identity is revealed in a surprising climax.
Greater Tuna
The long-running off-Broadway hit features two actors creating the entire population of Tuna, Texas in a tour de farce of quick-change artistry, changing costumes and characterizations faster than a jack rabbit runs from a coyote. Two actors, 20 characters, and a barrel of laughs, y'all. Greater Tuna was originally produced in 1981 in Austin, Texas by its authors, Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard. The play's stars, Williams and Sears, played all twenty characters, and Howard directed. One year after its premiere, Greater Tuna opened off-Broadway, ran for over a year, and went on to tour major theaters all over America and spots overseas for the next thirty-some years, becoming one of the most produced plays in American theatre history.
