Aeschylus' Persians is unique in being the only extant Greek tragedy on an historical subject: Greece's victory in 480 BC over the great Persian King, Xerxes, eight years before the play was written and first performed in 472 BC. Looking at Persians examines how Aeschylus responded to such a turning point in Athenian history and how his audience may have reacted to his play. As well as considering the play's relationship with earlier lost tragedies and discussing its central themes, including war, nature and the value of human life, the volume considers how Persians may have been staged in fifth-century Athens and how it has been performed today. To interrupt, both on stage and off, is to wrest power. From the Ghost's appearance in Hamlet to Celia's frightful speech in Volpone, interruptions are an overlooked linguistic and dramatic form that delineates the balance of power within a scene. This book analyses interruptions as a specific form in dramatic literature, arguing that these everyday occurrences, when transformed into aesthetic phenomena, reveal illuminating connections: between characters, between actor and audience, and between text and reader. Focusing on the works of William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and John Fletcher, Michael M. Wagoner examines interruptions that occur through the use of punctuation and stage directions, as well as through larger forms, such as conventions and dramaturgy. This Element explores how theatre responded to the death and loss produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, by innovating forms and spaces designed to support us in grief. Even as it reckoned with its own demise, theatre endeavoured to collectivise grief by performing a range of functions more commonly associated with funerary, health and social care services, which buckled under restrictions and neglect. Supernatural Fiction in Early Modern Drama & Culture
Magic and the supernatural are common themes in the philosophy and fiction of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This book explores varieties of scepticism and belief exhibited by a selection of philosophers and playwrights, including Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, Giordano Bruno, John Dee, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton, explicating how each author defines the supernatural, whether he assumes magic to operate in the world, and how he uses occult principles to explain what can be known and what is ethical. Beliefs and claims concerning impossible phenomena and superhuman agency require literary historians to determine whether an occult system of magical operation is being described in a given text. Each chapter in this volume evaluates whether a chosen early modern author is endorsing magic as efficacious or divinely sanctioned, or criticising it for being fraudulent or unholy. By examining works of fiction, it is possible to explore fantastic settings which were not intended to be synonymous with the early modern audience's everyday experience, settings where magic exists and operates according to the playwrights' designs. This book also sets out to determine what historical sources provided given authors with knowledge of the occult and speculates on how aware an audience would have been of academic, classical, or popular contexts surrounding the text at hand.
A Midsummer Night's Dream, 1600
A Midsummer Night's Dream was performed around 1595 and published in 1600, in a quarto printed by Richard Bradock. This edition provides a photographic facsimile of this text taken from the Huntingdon Library. In his introduction Berger discusses the nature of the manuscript, and reconstructs the printing process. He also analyzes the many differences between the Quarto and Folio versions of the play, and considers the extent to which they reflect Shakespeare's own revisions.

The Conquest of Kanchi (1880) is the first play of Ramshankar Ray which was staged in 1881. It is based on the historic war between Gajapati Purushottam Dev, the illustrious king of the Surya dynasty of Odisha; and Saluva Narasimha Dev, the ruler of Kanchi. The play is foregrounded on the legend of romantic love between Gajapati King Purushottam Dev and Padmavati, the princess of Kanchi which led to the invasion of Kanchi and eventually their wedding. The Fugitive Series 3
The Fugitive: Series 3 by John Galsworthy delves into the theme of marital incompatibility, similar to his earlier work in the Forsyte Saga. The play portrays the victimization of women who choose to go against the supposed morality by demanding separation from their husbands without first ensuring a more powerful protector of sorts, such as a blood relative or another lover. The Fugitive: Series 3 is not unlike the societal setup depicted in the autobiographical work of Tehmina Durrani, which exposes the victimization of women who choose to step out of societal norms.

The room is paneled and has a low ceiling, with a broad window above the window seat showing the outer gate and yew trees of a churchyard and the porch of a church. Ivy Burlacombe, the farmer's daughter, enters the room quietly with a prayer book in one hand and a glass of water containing wild orchids and hawthorn in the other. She sits on the window seat and sniffs the flowers. Michael Strangway stops playing the flute and sighs after completing the third movement of Veracini's violin sonata.
