Shakespeare and Lecoq
This book provides actors, directors, teachers and students with a clear, practical guide to applying the work of influential theatre practitioner Jacques Lecoq to the process of rehearsing or workshopping the Shakespeare text. Written by theatre practitioner Ed Woodall, who trained with Lecoq himself, and Shakespeare academic Abigail Rokison-Woodall, this guide begins with warm-ups and ensemble-building, and moves through explorations of the story, the world of the play, the text, character emotion, thought and physicality and staging. Lecoq's method often relies on 'play', and play is often seen as trivial or inconsequential. This book argues that the more playful you are, the more playfully you investigate your speech or scene and the more physically motivated that playfulness is, the more vital and lifelike your acting of Shakespeare will be.
The Business of English Restoration Theatre, 1660-1700
Deborah C. Payne's ground-breaking study traces the historical origins of a dilemma still bedevilling theatre companies: how to reconcile audience demand for novelty with profitability. As a solution, English acting companies in 1660 adopted an unprecedented theatrical duopoly. Implicit to its economic logic were scarcity, prestige, and innovation: attributes that, it was hoped, would generate wealth and exclusivity. Changes to playhouse architecture, stagecraft, dramatic repertory, and company practices were undertaken to create this new, upmarket theatre of "great expences." So powerful was the promise of the duopoly and so enthralling the wholesale transformation of the theatrical marketplace that management--despite dwindling box office--resisted change for 35 years. Drawing upon network and behavioural economic theory, Professor Payne shows why the acting companies clung to an economic model inimical to their self-interest. Original archival research further bolsters this radically new perspective on an exciting and crucial period in English theatre. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

American't (Book II)
Synopsis: Readers of book one demanded the origin stories of the Black men and how they met. That story originated on the world-famous campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Six lives came together and were forever changed through the discovery of self and the magic that transpires when bonding with others. If college is where we go to find ourselves, then it's also where we go to discover love, friends, hope, pride and a possession of knowledge that prepares us for what lies waiting in the campus afterlife. So, let's walk backwards and observe the origin stories of the Black men who came together to battle their personal luggage taken to school with them, called family, and their new battles introduced as they slithered through their collegiate experiences, called growth. If book one asked the proverbial question, "What do we do with the white people?" Then allow book two to ask a more pungent and intuitive question, "What do we do with the Black people?" When placed in charge, do Black people actually empower and uplift their own, or do they subjugate their own onto a sub-plantation that's just as emotionally and psychologically damaging as the larger plantation on which it sits? Walk the campus with Knowledge and observe his perspective of the HBCU, and just maybe, you'll discover how Black life shaped him into the man you fell in love with, in book one.Autobiography: King Bell aka Jerome Nyjuan Bell, Sr. is an avid reader. He received his undergrad in Business Administration from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1999. He would go on to exit the United States Marine Corps after serving ten years and receive his master's in business administration from Averett University in Danville, Virginia, in 2003. Mr. Bell is an Entrepreneur and Real Estate Developer who resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Theatricality, Playtexts and Society
This Element proposes a novel way of defining, understanding and approaching theatricality, a term that exists both in the theatre and, more broadly, in everyday life. It argues that four foundational, material processes of theatre-making manifest themselves in all playtexts in both overt and covert forms. Each of the four sections defines a different theatrical process, explores its functions in two chosen playtexts and examines its implications for the wider experience of the spectators outside the theatre. The Element concludes with a supplementary reflection on performance to show how even seemingly untheatrical playtexts can be analysed and staged to reveal their unspoken theatricality. It also argues that this new understanding of theatricality has a politics, that the artifice of any theatre and the constructedness of any society are analogous and that both, consequently, can be fundamentally changed. This Element is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
