It was a shock when Erwin Olaf passed away unexpectedly in 2023 while recovering from a lung transplant. In the 1980s and 1990s, he gained fame for his extravagant, sometimes sexually explicit photographs. Inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe, Hans van Manen, and Paul Blanca, he found his muses in Amsterdam's Club RoXY. Over time, he evolved from a rebellious avant-gardist into a celebrated artist, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to his exhibitions, from The Hague to Shanghai. Throughout his career, he remained true to himself, creating his own universe while tirelessly advocating for the rights of the queer community. A progressive lung disease prompted Erwin Olaf to put his legacy in order and contribute to this book about his life and work. "I don't need to come out looking great. But I do want it to be accurate." Mischa Cohen followed Erwin Olaf for years, gaining access to his archives and his life. Xavier Lopez is a Latino, conceptual artist, who received his MFA from the University of California, Davis, where he wrote the theoretical/artistic thesis the "Soft Cyborg." The Color of Clothes celebrates the unique beauty of the autochrome in 370 images that reflect the broad sweep of its usage. Couturiers embraced the way the process showcased their exquisite designs to luminous perfection--among them Fortuny, Poiret, Doucet, Vionnet, Lucile, Chanel, and Lanvin. Beyond the sphere of fashion, there are also examples from the Salon du Go羶t Fran癟ais, France's "virtual" autochrome exhibition of luxury items, and Albert Kahn's Archives de la Plan癡te, a bold attempt to record the world's cultures in autochromes.Some of the photographers involved may be famous in their field--Lartigue, Stieglitz, Steichen--though very often they are lesser known, and many are women who took to the process with panache. Nicola Brandt: The Distance Within
From German colonialism to the post-apartheid present, Brandt's photographs present new views of Namibia that intertwine its many historiesFeaturing images and video stills made over more than a decade, The Distance Within reflects on photographer Nicola Brandt's (born 1983) German and Namibian ancestry and deconstructs certain established ways of seeing Namibia. Brandt traveled the country extensively, documenting landscapes and people, structures and encounters, to reveal ensnared histories of German colonialism, National Socialism and apartheid. Markers of these histories range from the ephemeral and private, such as a dilapidated mound of stones as a roadside memorial, to official sites of remembrance and resistance, particularly for colonial atrocities. Alongside her images, Brandt assembles texts by scholars in photography, postcolonial cultures, memory and genocide studies, as well as archival material, to understand enduring blind spots. The result is an intersectional argument in favor of reclaiming suppressed Indigenous stories and identities, undoing romantic notions of whiteness and, ultimately, illuminating what has not been visible.
