Exposure

Thames & H 出版
2026/01/06 出版

A photograph captures a fleeting visual in time. A split second on either side can change the result entirely: the exact moment of exposure is critical. More than simply a static image, a photograph has the power to evoke emotion, revealing both the seen and the unseen. In her latest collection, curator Amber Creswell Bell explores the work of forty contemporary photographers, including Leila Jeffreys, Bill Henson, and Kara Rosenlund. Each artist shares insights into their practice, ranging from the whimsical to the wild, addressing subjects as diverse as the environment, motherhood, and identity. Some point and shoot; others meticulously curate a scene, but they all strive for creative connection with the viewer through this common medium. Exposure captures the essence of modern photography, showcasing bold perspectives, striking landscapes, and intimate portraits that reflect cultural richness and natural beauty.

Ancient Egypt

Amber Books 出版
2025/12/29 出版

Ancient Egypt: A Journey down the Nile is a photographic celebration of the wonders of the kingdom of the Pharoahs, from Philae and Karnak in the south to Memphis, the pyramids at Giza, and finally the Nile delta itself. The extraordinary civilization of ancient Egypt could not have existed without the Nile, which rises in the Ethiopian Highlands and sub-Saharan Africa. In life, the ancient Egyptians were tied to an area of at most a few kilometres either side of the great river. Even in death, the Ancient Egyptians where never far from the river. Many of the most famous archaeological sites - the pyramids at Giza, the Valley of the Kings, the step pyramid at Saqqara, and the royal cult temples at Deir al-Bahri - lie within, beside, or on top of the cliffs created by the immense past flows of the River Nile. Ancient Egypt: A Journey Down the Nile follows the course of the river from south to north, illuminating ancient Egyptian history through the patchwork of temples, tombs and pyramids to either side. The Egyptian state began with unification under southern Egyptian kings around 3100 BC and it started its final decline in the north around the great city of Alexandria, established in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. Engaging and illustrated throughout with more than 180 photographs, Ancient Egypt: Journey Down the Nile is a vivid pictorial exploration of 4,000 years of Ancient Egyptian civilization from the river that gave life to the region.

Rock 'n' Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip

2025/12/17 出版

The 1967 Sunset Strip exploded with rock culture as giant hand-painted billboards became temporary monuments to music's coming of age--visual celebrations beginning with The Doors that captured the revolutionary spirit of an era. The Sunset Strip, circa 1967. Buffalo Springfield called it right: "There's something happening here...what it is ain't exactly clear." What was happening then is now absolutely clear. Rock 'n' roll and the kids who lived it were coming of age--right there on The Strip. And, as if to define the era, a few independent minds in the music industry posted giant, temporary monuments that said it all. Billboards. Bigger than life. Hand-painted homages to rock. The Doors led the way. It seemed that billboards would chronicle rock forever. In Rock 'n' Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip, author/photographer Robert Landau showcases these signs of the time, a time when rock was the most important music ever recorded, when youth, politics, and art merged to turn counterculture into mainstream culture. Landau was right there, a kid destined to be a professional photographer, shooting his first pictures. Decades later, he rediscovered his Kodachromes, the only extensive collection of photographs that document those iconic billboards. Impassioned, he interviewed the artists, record producers, and designers who shaped those placards, bringing fresh insight to the culture of the day and its lasting impact on the world. He tells it like it was, through the people who lived the music, the time, the energy...and the billboards. A must for every rock lover, pop-art aficionado, and socio-culture freak, Rock 'n' Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip is a coffee-table book to read and reread, view and review, a book with a beginning and, perhaps tragically, an end. Yes, the true rock 'n' roll billboard era ended, but Robert Landau has created a bound museum of its best artwork, a gallery that shows what was happening there. On the Sunset Strip.

Thinking Twice

Octoberworks 出版
2025/12/09 出版

Photo essays of unsettling beauty, ethics, and perception.Thinking Twice is a provocative photographic meditation on food, beauty, and ethical tension. Over a decade of travel through markets in Asia, Europe, Mexico, and the United States, photographer Phyllis Crowley captured intensely cropped images of meat, fish, and organic matter that hover between abstraction and documentation.Devoid of conventional context, these photographs seduce the eye with sumptuous color, pattern, and texture, only to reveal-upon closer inspection-the raw realities of consumption, mortality, and environmental strain. Essays by critic Zachary Fine and artist-curator Deborah Hesse frame the work within broader conversations about the "ugly sublime," sustainability, and the cultural rituals surrounding food.Neither didactic nor purely aesthetic, Thinking Twice challenges viewers to hold opposing truths at once: attraction and repulsion, beauty and violence, nourishment and loss. The result is a powerful visual experience that asks us to look beyond the plate and reconsider how food reflects our values, cultures, and relationship to the natural world.Published by OctoberWorks and designed by Jeanne Criscola, Thinking Twice embodies the imprint's commitment to intentional, design-forward publishing. It is a meditation on seeing - urging us, as the title suggests, to "think twice" to hold death and beauty, ethics and aesthetics, in our minds at once.

Roberto Tondop籀 Tr獺nsito

2025/12/03 出版

Set within the contexts of colonial history and religious syncretism, Tr獺nsito is a lush study on transformation and resistanceMexican photographer Roberto Tondop籀's (born 1978) Tr獺nsito is a photographic exploration of grief, ritual and identity. This photobook connects the death of Tondop籀's father, Tr獺nsito, with the artist's participation in the Chunt獺, a local festival where men dress as women in honor of Saint Sebastian. By becoming a Chunt獺, Tondop籀 pays tribute to his father and reflects on how mourning can prompt personal and cultural transformation. The Fiesta Grande embodies both tradition and contradiction: a deeply conservative community embracing a public ritual of gender fluidity. This tension serves as a point of departure for the project's broader interrogation of identity, focusing on the instability of fixed categories such as masculinity, sexuality and national heritage. The book's special features include a Japanese top-folded interior as well as a tipped-in sticker.

Joel Meyerowitz: Morandi's Objects

Damiani Ltd 出版
2025/12/03 出版

Meticulous yet sensitive, Meyerowitz's photographic inventory of Giorgio Morandi's studio recaptures the delicate depiction of light for which the painter was renownedIn the spring of 2015, the world-renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz spent time at Giorgio Morandi's studio at 36 via Fondazza in Bologna. The simple rooms where Morandi painted are awash with objects--vases, tins, shells, bottles and jugs--stacked on shelves, sideboards, chests of drawers and overflowing onto the floor. Morandi would select these objects and arrange them on makeshift tables so that he could render them, and the light that fell upon them, attentively and deliberately in oil, watercolor and pencil, creating an elusive body of work that has influenced artists ever since. Some 50 years after Morandi died, in the very same space, using Morandi's surfaces and the same light source to cast the same shadows, Meyerowitz lived with the same objects. He carefully photographed every object in the studio, and, by instilling each with confidence and individuality, in turn, made them his own.Originally published in 2016, this expanded and revised edition includes more than 130 new photographs, a new essay by Amanda Renshaw and an updated bibliography.Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) is a street, portrait and landscape photographer. His work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions around the world and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and many other museums worldwide.

Keizo Kitajima: Tokyo--Koza

2025/12/03 出版

Gravitating toward nocturnal spaces and marginalized communities, Kitajima uses the night as both subject and metaphor for identity, desire and transformationJapanese photographer Keizo Kitajima's (born 1954) two series, Photographs of Okinawa (1975-79) and Tokyo 1979, share a deep continuity in spirit and approach, revealing the foundations of his raw, immersive photographic language. Both series emerge from Kitajima's direct participation in the worlds he depicts--whether amid the humid streets and bars of post-reversion Okinawa or the restless nightlife of Tokyo's underground. Shot in stark black and white with harsh flash, the images expose moments of vulnerability and intensity within Japan's shifting social landscape. Although each series was originally self-published separately, Kitajima later announced that their intentions and conclusions are the same. With three different cover colors--pink, blue and green--this publication collides the two series together in oversize format, with images as raw and fresh as when first photographed some 50 years ago.

Ma簿 Lucas: All Eyes on Me

Mai,Lucas  著
2025/11/26 出版

Taken across 30 years, Lucas' photographs document everyday expressions of creativity by ever-dynamic New York's Afro-American and Latinx youthFor Paris-based photographer Ma簿 Lucas (born 1968), All Eyes On Me is a long-term labor of love. Shot between 1990 and 2010, her pictures capture the hip-hop and street culture of Afro-American and Latinx New York City: from Coney Island and Jones Beach to Harlem and East New York. Those were the years in which young people of color turned against preexisting codes and invented new styles in order to express their identities and their pride artistically. It is as if they were out to supplant the established hip-hop phenomenon--which had become too much about wealth and luxury--with a counterculture of their own. Approaching her subjects with respect, empathy and love, Lucas produces photographs of candid authenticity, grace and deep humanity. She brings out the beauty of a youth scene whose creativity was expressed in school, out of school, on the streets, on the beaches, in nightclubs and more.

Waits/Corbijn

2025/11/21 出版

Now back in print, this stunning, award- winning visual odyssey encapsulates the essence of Tom Waits' enigmatic persona and Anton Corbijn's distinctive photographic style. Spanning over three decades, this extraordinary book showcases the enduring collaboration between a legendary musician and a renowned Dutch photographer--a creative symbiosis that has produced some of the most memorable images in rock and roll history. Structured chronologically, it traces Waits' evolution as an artist alongside Corbijn's development as a photographer whose starkly evocative images capture Waits in a multitude of settings, from gritty urban landscapes to intimate studio sessions. Through Corbijn's lens, Waits emerges not just as a musician but as a multifaceted character, embodying the spirit of the troubadour, the poet, and the raconteur. A final section features Waits' own photography along with poems, stories, and collages. As Jim Jarmusch comments in the introduction, "A collection of images of Tom Waits seen through the eyes of Anton Corbijn is something special, some kind of vortex, an axis of evil geniuses." Tom Waits fans, photography enthusiasts, and anyone seeking insight into the joy of collaboration will find much to discover in this inspiring partnership between two artistic visionaries and friends.

Lake Verea: Modern Barrag獺n

Lake,Verea  著
Hatje Cantz 出版
2025/11/18 出版

A diaristic archive of pilgrimages to Luis Barrag獺n's modernist abode In this intimate archive, the contemporary Mexican photographer duo Lake Verea record their pilgrimages, made over the course of nearly two decades, to the house of Mexican architect Luis Barrag獺n (1902-88). As devotees of the architect, the duo began photographing the modernist mecca in 2006, endeavoring to approach as closely as possible to Barrag獺n's spirit. The artists sat in his chairs, opened his closets, listened in silence and kissed in the house's enchanted garden. Modern Barrag獺n compiles the fruits of their reverent labor. The photographs capture the house across a myriad of atmospheric conditions--in daylight, under the light of the full moon, by streetlight and against stormy skies. Flash photography lends the house a spectral quality; rubbed with aluminum sheets, the walls reveal their hidden textures, evoking the hidden memories contained within the home. As a spiritual sequel to the couple's photobook on Anni and Josef Albers, also published by Hatje Cantz, Modern Barrag獺n is a one-of-a-kind yet double-sided look into the hidden facets behind the legendary name. Based in Mexico City, Lake Verea comprises Francisca Rivero-Lake Cortina (born 1973) and Carla Verea Hern獺ndez (born 1978). Their "expanded photography" practice incorporates both analog and digital formats as well as mediums including textiles and performance.

Cleveland's Urban Landscape

Levy  著
2025/11/17 出版

"Every city has its own textures, its own special relationship to land and water, its own light, its own night. Cleveland's history-haunted, labor-encrusted, smoke-grimed nights is a place as varied in texture as any in America. It echoes in the interior darkness of the camera lens during lonely, leisurely hours as Levy wanders the city. Levy's photos seek realities that can spark some recognition at a subconscious level, a combination of eye and time and device that suddenly, sometimes, generates a new type of seeing."--Douglas Max Utter, Foreword In 1999 Cleveland Plain Dealer photographer Michael S. Levy was given an assignment by his editor to provide images for a feature article about research being conducted by members of Cleveland State University's Center for Sacred Landmarks. Cleveland's Urban Landscape is the product of that assignment. The photographs in this book are an exploration of Cleveland's landscape from mundane objects like fire hydrants and billboards to the magnificent--a sunset over Lake Erie or the steeple of one of the many historic churches scattered across the city. Levy's images are full of life, movement, mystery, sadness, and beauty as he contrasts disparate elements. Through Levy's photographs, we see the history of Cleveland as it changes from one era to another. Cleveland's Urban Landscape will appeal to those interested in photography or Cleveland's heritage.

A Singular People

Fernandez  著
2025/11/17 出版

A pictorial view of the Separatist community of Zoar The community of Zoar has been a tourist attraction since it was founded in 1817, due in part to its uncommon experiment in Christian communal living, its German heritage, and its location on the Ohio & Erie Canal. Unlike many 19th-century communal societies, Zoar did not discourage tourism and "gawkers." As a result, there is an unusually rich photographic record of the community and its people as well as many descriptions and comments by writers who wished to share their impressions of the Old World town. Tourists snapped photos of themselves riding on haywagons, boating on Zoar Lake, and walking in the Zoar Separatists' symbolic garden. The Zoarites themselves got into the act as well, taking commercial photos of themselves and their town to be sold as postcards. Fernandez uses many previously unpublished photographs from the Ohio Historical Society's collections and captions them with the words of journalists, diarists, and other visitors. Today a restored village with a ten-museum complex operated by the Ohio Historical Society, Zoar has consciously maintained its German roots. Zoar continues to attract the curious individual, the traveler, the day-tripper, and the magazine and newspaper writers..

Drug Wars

G Editions 出版
2025/11/16 出版

Drug Wars: Supply and Demand by Jonathan Alpeyrie is a raw, powerful exploration of the global drug trade, uniquely captured through the lens of one of the world's most acclaimed photojournalists. Known for his immersive approach, Alpeyrie has earned international recognition for documenting conflicts and crises from within, gaining access to worlds few others can. His previous work, including The Shattered Lens (Simon & Schuster, 2013), detailing his captivity during the Syrian Civil War, cemented his place as a leading figure in global photojournalism. What sets Alpeyrie's photography apart is his deep personal immersion in the environments he documents. He doesn't just observe--he becomes part of the story. In Drug Wars: Supply and Demand, this approach allows him to capture the drug trade in a way no one else can. From rural drug production hubs in Latin America to cartel-controlled territories and the streets of the United States, his access and intimate perspective yield extraordinary images. His commitment to telling important, often overlooked stories is evident in every photograph, offering a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the lives of those affected by the drug trade. The book features over 150 evocative images that bring the complexities of the drug war to life. Through his lens, Alpeyrie conveys the human cost, political ramifications, and social devastation of this global crisis. Drug Wars: Supply and Demand presents a visual narrative that is both urgent and unforgettable--one that demands to be seen and understood.

Racing Unfiltered

Jamey,Price  著
2025/11/14 出版

When motorsport and automotive photographer Jamey Price first saw the NASCAR promotional film cameras from the 1990s show up on another photographer's social media feed, he knew he had to have one. These cameras were never made to take outstanding photos. They were inexpensive, poorly made, and plastic. The winders break. The shutter stops working. They will just freeze in below zero temperatures. But they also capture magic. From the IMSA races to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Formula 1 races around the world to Monterey Car Week and Lamborghini events, Racing Unfiltered chronicles Price's year-long journey to capture the highs, lows, and candid moments of motorsport racing, all through the lens of vintage film cameras.

Robert Adams: Along the Canadian Border

Robert,Adams  著
Fraenkel 出版
2025/11/10 出版

A slender meditation on nature's ceaseless indifference to human affairs, as expressed through 10 gleaming photographs of the skiesFor more than 50 years, the legendary American photographer Robert Adams (born 1937) has made black-and-white photographs documenting the imprint of human development on the landscape of the American West. His austere, rigorously composed photographs capture with unflinching precision both the beauty of nature and the exploitation and degradation man has subjected it to. In Along the Canadian Border, Adams obliquely addresses our fraught societal moment, alluding to the distance between brutal political forces and policies and the resilience of the natural world. Turning his camera to the sky, he presents 10 luminous photographs of clouds, each indifferent to human boundaries and conflicts. Adams borrows the title of the book from a poem by William Stafford, who writes that, in the face of strife and pomp, "the only heroic thing is the sky."

Soviet Scientific Institutes

Eric,Lusito  著

Cosmic rays and rumored climate-altering weapons--a treasure trove of never-before-documented Soviet-era research sitesIn Soviet Scientific Institutes, French photographer Eric Lusito (born 1976) takes readers on a journey through time, space and science. Gigantic control panels, monumental telescopes, inexplicable machinery--the facilities he documents might be found in comic book and graphic novel fantasies or the science fiction of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. But why were these institutes built and what purposes do they serve today? The Soviets promoted science as a utopian ideal to replace religion and rapidly modernize the country. "Big science" projects, primarily for Cold War military purposes, involved thousands of researchers working in complete secrecy. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutes were left destitute, their sophisticated technology condemned to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the new landscape. Today, defying the odds, they persist--even in wartime--to continue their work.Lusito gained unique access to sites across former republics and satellites of the USSR--from a cosmic ray research center in the remote Armenian mountains, to one of the world's largest radars located in Ukraine, which locals believed to be a climate-altering weapon. Featuring a cover with a tactile laser-cut pattern replicating the punched paper tape used by early Soviet computers, Soviet Scientific Institutes is the first visual account of this once-closed world. Lusito's photographs capture the unintentional and unexpected beauty of scientific technology and bear witness to our never-ending quest for knowledge.

Revisiting the late Magnum photographer's iconic portrait of a city on the brink of seismic change, with fresh contextual essays and oral histories with notable BostoniansPublished with Boston Athenaeum. In Bostonians, celebrated American photographer Constantine Manos (1934-2025) captures Boston on the brink--of celebration, transformation and unrest. Commissioned for the 1975 Bicentennial exhibition Where's Boston?, Manos' nine-month photographic journey offers a vibrant, nuanced portrait of daily life through street scenes, interiors and public moments. In the 1970s, the city was diverse in age, class, race and religion, and undergoing seismic changes. Manos' photos offer glimpses of the political dissent and grassroots activism that defined the era: anti-busing protests, labor strikes and demands for racial and gender equity.Presented for the first time with contextual essays about the photographer, the series and Boston's urban fabric of the 1970s, this publication revisits the iconic project with fresh insight. It also includes passages from newly conducted oral histories with individuals pictured in the photographs, as well as with politicians, artists and activists who shaped the era.

Two hundred photobooks across five decades--a raucous, one-of-a-kind tour through Parr's monumental history with the medium.Published with PhotoBook Museum, Cologne. Photography and Citizenship

2025/11/10 出版

How the United States' most successful photography exhibition actually undermined the country's Cold War-era propaganda and isolationist policiesCurated by Edward Steichen, The Family of Man, an exhibition of some 500 photographs from around the world first shown at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955, was the most globally successful art event of the cultural Cold War, with an attendance of some 10 million by the tour's end in 1962. Though much has been written about the exhibition, it remains an event that is poorly understood. Photography and Citizenship offers radically new readings of the cultural work accomplished by the exhibition and of Steichen's aesthetic achievement. The Family of Man was not, as has so often been argued, a retreat from politics into the comforts of a universalist humanism. Instead, Steichen tapped into the prevalent discourse of "the human condition" as well as the aspirations for an emergent postwar world order to fashion a pedagogy of liberal democratic and cosmopolitan citizenship.
