The Fumes of Mars
On 23 July 2018, in the North East of Athens, Greece, one of the deadliest wildfires ever recorded took place. The Fumes of Mars brings together testimonies of survivors, state reports, wildfire specialists, and topographical information with photographer Katerina Angelopoulou's images of her personal experience of the event and its aftermath.Photographer Katerina Angelopoulou spent her summers in the area as a child, and it was the home of her parents. The fire rushed from the hilltop, jumping over the pine trees, and to the edge of the sea in less than an hour and a half-swallowing everything in its path. The Fire Department, and the Civil Protection failed to respond to the situation; an evacuation plan, or even a rushed warning was never executed and the necessary forces to battle effectively the fire or rescue people never dispatched to the area. The fire spread to the east, engulfing several small towns. Locals and passers-by were abandoned by those same structures that were there to protect them. The artist, her mother and her three-year-old daughter were trapped at the shoreline with several others for many hours before help finally arrived.This book is the result of a research project that brings together testimonies of numerous survivors and information from the State Investigator Report and the ongoing trial including wildfire specialists, topographical information of the area, and Angelopoulou's images.

A vivid portrait of South Brooklyn in 1976, patriotic, diverse, and on the cusp of change, this book gathers more than fifty photographs by lifelong New Yorker Larry Racioppo, who left his nearby apartment that morning to record the pageantry of "America's Birthday." What he captured is a timeless record of Brooklyn's people and pride during the Bicentennial year, now published as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. A rare photobook gem of an outsider artist's post-Depression portraits made available once moreIn Heber Springs, Arkansas, a reclusive photographer named Mike Meyer (1884-1959), known simply as "Disfarmer," created an uncanny record of American rural life during the 1930s and 1940s. Working out of his modest studio, Disfarmer created portraits which are direct and unpretentious. Disfarmer's portraits of cotton farmers, tradesmen, soldiers home on leave and the extended families that made up this rural community, reveal a common bond that is rapidly disappearing in the United States. They are bold portraits, and sometimes confrontational, yet they show his sitter's humble grace and small-town charm. Handed down through generations and found today in the family albums of this community, Disfarmer's portraits are emblematic of the post-Depression era. These photographs, many unpublished or rarely seen, underscore his uniquely American vision of place. For this monograph of Disfarmer's work, Twin Palms founder Jack Woody returned to the surviving glass-plate negatives, choosing 180 for this book. A set of contact prints were made from the glass plates, and the book was printed on a sheet-fed gravure press in Kyoto. Gravure gives the images a richness and depth that evokes their time and place.

You do not have to be a Ulysses, tied to the mast of your ship in order to fall victim to the beauty of these Sirens. German photographer Stefan Soell takes us on a photographic excursion to Portugal's southern Atlantic coast, together with ten models of exceptionally striking and distinctive looks. These Sirens are frolicking in the foaming surf, and playing in the winds and sands of this wild coastline, enhancing their natural eroticism. Stefan Soell is a master at capturing their joyful but provocative and enticing play. The photographs for this book were taken over a period of five years during long stays in the far South Western area of Portugal. The lonely, undeveloped Costa Vicentina in the west, the Cabo de S瓊o Vicente in the east, and the rugged cliffs of the Algarve are one of the last sections of natural coastline in Europe. Usually, the locations could only be reached on foot, so having light, portable equipment was important, as it enabled longer coastal expeditions with maximum flexibility when taking pictures. All photos were taken exclusively with natural light, without additional brighteners or reflectors.

He directed the Rephotographic Survey Project in the late 1970s, which located and rephotographed the sites of images made by William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, and other photographers surveying the West in the late nineteenth century. Klett has also published several books of his own work.Using his travels in the Nevada desert with Mark Klett and his current rephotographic team as the starting point, William Fox offers here an examination of the history of photography in the American West and of Klett's role in documenting the landscape. Like the story of photography itself, this is a multilayered narrative. Part historical overview, part travel journal, part biographical study of Klett, View Finder explores the evolution of our view of the land from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Fox looks at the legacy left by the likes of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Robert Adams. And in focusing on the work of Mark Klett in the last quarter century, William Fox reflects upon the meaning of the landscape at the beginning of the millennium. Wonderland
Called a poet of the visual image, Eduardo Fuss has photographed in his native Argentina, Spain, and all across North America. However, the Bisti Wilderness in northwest New Mexico, near Farmington, has inspired his most striking photographs. In 1966, Fuss settled in the United States in Seattle, Washington. He soon traveled across his newly adopted country, working in New York and Connecticut as a painter and curator. In the late 1970s, he returned to the West, traveling through New Mexico, a land that had been instilled in his childhood memory by John Ford westerns and an Ansel Adams photograph of the moon hanging over a village called Hernandez. He bought a camera to capture the light and shadow and mountains of New Mexico.He found the Bisti Wilderness irresistible. Once, when he was there to shoot, high clouds formed. When a thin line of empty sky appeared on the horizon, he set up his equipment. "Suddenly a shaft of light appeared, the clouds providing a tremendously black background. I got two rolls of incredible, vibrant pictures. Mostly I just work with what is there--rarely is nothing there. Once you start looking, you find different ways to do things."Throughout his career Eduardo has used natural light, one camera, a Canon, and one film, Fuji Velvia ASA 50, to take his photographs. His artistry comes with patience, with waiting for the shot. Lately he has been excitedly exploring the possibilities of combining his transparencies with computer capabilities to make sure his prints reflect what he saw, what he perceives as the emotions of the earth itself.

Sam Lee (also known as Sam L. Street) is a contemporary street photographer based in Amsterdam. His work captures the quiet poetry of everyday life-fleeting, unguarded moments found both in the streets of his hometown and while traveling through other cities.
