Menachem Kipnis
Menachem Kipnis (1878-1942) was one of the early twentieth-century's greatest Jewish eastern European ethnomusicologists, folklorists, and photographers. He had a weekly column in the Warsaw Yiddish newspaper Haynt, retelling humorous old folk stories about the fictional Polish town of Chelm, populated exclusively by fools. At the same time, his photographs of Jewish life in eastern Europe regularly appeared in the Forverts (Forward), the most popular Yiddish daily newspaper in the United States. Now, for the first time, Kipnis's stories and photographs are published together in a single book.Menachem Kipnis brings these photographs and stories into dialogue with one another, bridging the Jewish communities in Poland and in America during the interwar period. This dialogue, between image and text, between European metropolis and American metropolis, captures a key historical moment when American Jews sought to imagine the lives of their coreligionists in the "Old Country" and eastern European urban Jews sought to distinguish themselves from their Jewish compatriots who were still living in the shtetl. Including an introductory essay, annotations, and an epilogue by Sheila E. Jelen, Menachem Kipnis suggests new ways of understanding both visual and literary depictions of eastern European Jewish culture between the two world wars.

Bhutan has the reputation as being the happiest place in the world and prides itself on its index of Gross National Happiness. Whether Bhutan's claim to the happiness pedestal is hype, or verifiable fact, Bhutan is a remarkable place! A small country, Bhutan is nestled in the Himalayas between China, India, Tibet, and Nepal. Steeped in Buddhist tradition which commands respect for the environment and all creatures in it, discipline, and acceptance, Bhutan prides itself on basing its governmental decisions on their impact on the collective happiness of the country. Not that long ago, Bhutan was closed to the outside world, but as it has opened up to tourism, it has also worked hard to hold onto its traditions while trying to build the infrastructure to allow a balance of modernization and tradition. At least four factors contribute to Bhutan's charm and spirit: the place, the people, the culture, and the hopefulness that these elements will persist into the future as reflected through the children of Bhutan. This large format photobook explores these themes through four interdependent sections of fine art photographs shot in either full frame medium format or 35 mm and presented with accompanying native insights into Bhutan and Buddhism.

I was introduced to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, when my parents retired here in 1998. Although I'm a lifelong resident of this state, I hadn't spent time on the coast as our family owned a lake house in New Hampshire where we spent weekends, summers, and vacations. I consider myself a lake lover at heart, but what an unexpected delight it was to fall in love with the beauty of Cape Cod's sea, sand, and sky nearly 30 years ago! We would eventually buy our own home here, and the rest is history. My passion for photography as both a hobby and profession is nourished on Cape Cod with the abundance of scenic landmarks and hidden gems the area has to offer. Come along with me as I meander along beaches, back roads, and bays and share with you not just the glory of local seascapes and landscapes, but my thoughts and reflections on life, love, and family. With two parents succumbing to Alzheimer's Disease-Mom in 2021 and Dad at just about the time this book went to press-I can only hope they are seeing this and, with pride and delight, are relishing the journey I've been on to get this book into enthusiastic hands!

David Alekhuogie: A Reprise
In A Reprise, David Alekhuogie remixes Walker Evans's photographs of African art, provoking timely questions about authorship and authenticity. A Reprise, David Alekhuogie's first monograph, confronts the intriguing legacy of narrative and authorship behind Western presentations of African art, and poses timely questions about how Black aesthetics are circulated, accessed, valued, and interpreted today. In 1935, Walker Evans was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to photograph hundreds of African sculptures for the exhibition African Negro Art. Nearly ninety years later, Alekhuogie began investigating Evans's images, provocatively remixing them into his own vibrant and multilayered photographic collages. Transposing facsimiles of Evans's original images onto cardboard or paper structures of his own making, Alekhuogie rephotographs these image-sculptures against striking backdrops--often using East and West African textiles--thereby inviting multiple dimensions of viewership. Alekhuogie's images draw upon the musical idiom of the reprise--a performance of repetition--and stake a claim to crucial, restorative ideas around Black antiquity by questioning our relationship to what we consider fake or original, art or archive.

Magnum photographer Jean Gaumy (born 1948) has had privileged access to Monet's garden for many years, allowing him to conduct photographic research inspired by his love of science and botany. Drawing from the joy he experienced in his family's garden while young, he has sought to re-create that childhood curiosity and sense of wonder through photography that is both abstract and naturalistic. Jean Gaumy's Giverny is not an atlas of forms, but rather a photographic experiment in documenting nature from different angles. In these otherworldly duotone photographs, Monet's storied garden becomes something out of time in compositions bordering on the pictorial in their documenting of microscopic details.

Having Fun With My Camera (Oak Grove Lake Park)
My Canon EOS 80D DSLR just arrived yesterday, and so I am out exploring. I want to see how it performs using the Macro setting and utilizing the zoom feature of the 18-135mm IS USM lens that came in the kit. These images are what I was able to create. No cropping, alterations or improvements; just resizing to fit on this page (4.67 x 7 inches). Normally, I crop and enlarge each photo of my books, but not today. I want to examine the photos and share my discoveries with you.Come with me as I explore Oak Grove Lake Park in March. Louis Stettner (Photofile)
Brooklyn--born Louis Stettner (1922-- 2016) first took up a camera as a teenager and went on to establish an extraordinary career that lasted almost eighty years. After photographing life on the streets of New York, he joined the famous Photo League, a cooperative of photographers who shared artistic and social ideals, and befriended celebrated lensmen including Sid Grossman and Weegee. During World War II, he served as a combat photographer, and the fight against fascism strengthened his belief in Marxism and the working class.Living between New York and Paris, he amassed a huge body of work that combined elements of New York street photography with lyrical humanism in the French style. His subjects were many and varied: passengers on the subway and tourists in the streets, Spanish fishermen and American beatniks, protests and demonstrations, landscapes and trees. But no matter where he found himself, he looked for beauty in the everyday and never lost his fundamental compassion and solidarity with ordinary people.This volume in the Photofile series brings together a selection of Stettner's most important images from throughout his long and prolific career.

The Inner Passage

I love to hike, and I love to take photos of things I find while out hiking. Short Work
This collection of brief essays is best read while reclining on a comfortable sofa with a sleepy dog resting its head on your stomach. Jack Heinz was a professor of law, but we see very little of that here. He gives us a picture of small town life in the Midwest in the middle of the last century, but the picture is a collage, a mosaic. The stories extend well beyond that town, however, and include walking in London, practicing law in the Pentagon, canoeing in the Adirondacks, chasing wandering cows, teaching from the back of the classroom, and listening to Duke Ellington at the White House. Heinz has written for Harpers, Sports Illustrated, and The Hudson Review. His scholarly books were published by the university presses of Harvard, the University of Chicago, Northwestern, and the University of Illinois. But he wears his learning lightly here. This is off-hours writing, comfortable writing. The observations are mostly casual, inconsequential, often wry. They entertain.The photos were composed with the same eye. They are in sharp focus and their view of the world is often unexpected. But they won't upset your dog.
