Photo-texts From Below
What can photo-texts do, especially in the 'Age of Catastrophe' in which we now live? This study of 21st-century photo-texts analyses photography, in six separate chapters, alongside written language of all sorts (essay, commentary, story, caption, text-speak), in order to suggest, tentatively, a concerted, multi-actant facet to contem-porary text-image creativity. The examples chosen are all French, or French-related, and in their multifarious ways contri-bute to a growing politicisation, since the turn of the Millennium, around the use of the photographic image as accompanied and inflected by written text. In this sense, the corpus reflects what British cultural historian Raphael Samuel once called 'History from below'. Thus, photo-texts on migrancy and exile, on subaltern military resistance, on prison life, on ageing and the health-care sector since the pandemic, on youth alienation, on memories of Algerian independence, and on the workplace stereotype, are brought together and considered as varying and potent responses to the social conditions, and conditioning, of the marginalised, the oppressed and the silenced.Andy Stafford is Professor of French and Critical Theory at the University of Leeds.

Since we imagine something intentional about a community both in its formation and its function as a new entity, there is something both baffling and attractive about the idea of a "plant community." Do plants know what they're doing? Some claim our attention: good to eat, good to smell, get stuck to your clothes. For a majority, plants or plant communities arouse a restricted admiration: lawn. A lawn can be a plant community, an atrocious one to be sure. But I'm thinking of plant communities in the eyes of God, where the plants foregather in ancient times and set out toward infinity. These deserve the word community, and the individuals who make them up are original in the extreme, as they must be: they live in a tough town.It is our luck that the eternal aspects of these daredevils have fallen to the eye of artist Lindy Smith who has used the sun in ways known best to her to reveal the souls of plants as lives, as archetypes, as semaphore. Their shapes seem to belong to dreams while for all their unexpectedness they are no more accidental than dreams. What we see emerges from the lives they've lived in deep time; their importance hangs over them as an aura. We long to say their names: milkweed, mullein, bulrush, fescue, rush, yarrow. Or, on the other hand, sumpweed, pigweed, spurge. They belong to the things we see for the first time while recognizing we've known them always, hence the longing to absorb their eternal forms. Creation--we have it by our fingertips, just. Lost Preston

The Afterglow of Industry
The Afterglow of Industry brings together photographs from a ten-year project in which artist Chris Corson-Scott repeatedly travelled the extent of Aotearoa New Zealand, seeking out unknown, or remote sites which illuminate our dysfunctional present. Following this, several years were spent researching and writing on each of the 79 photographs featured in this book. In these texts, colonial and industrial histories weave in and out of geology, pre- European Māori history, outside forces from the United States and Europe, and contemporary issues like privatisation, asset sales, the New Zealand housing crisis, and the country's rebranding as a 'clean & green' tourist destination.Similar to the collapse of America's industrial Midwest, New Zealand has also experienced the whiplash of industry vanishing. Here though, this has been complicated by much of this industry first emerging in conjunction with European colonization. Corson-Scott's work focuses on these tensions, particularly in Te Waipounamu South Island, where the regions of the West Coast and Otago see industrial remnants contrasted with vast and complex landscapes. From these areas come images of freezing works on sacred rivers, contested mining projects, dwellings of 19 th century Chinese miners, gold processing plants still contaminated more than a century later, floods of acid mine drainage, and the demolition of factories which once built the country's modern infrastructure. Elsewhere, on a remote sandspit is one of history's largest whale strandings, industrial spaces are repurposed by artists, controversial hydroelectric schemes divert rivers, ancient forest remnants become tourism, and city fringe orchards are bulldozed for development.

Despite the barren climate most of the year, the heart of the people remains warm. The hospitality and optimism of the inhabitants soothes the harsh climate. The project Sketches of Science encloses more than 120 photographs of Nobel Laureates, taken by the photographer Volker Steger over the course of several years. Central Idea: All Laureates are asked to draw their research or discovery which got them the Nobel Prize. Then, they are photographed - freestyle. On occasion of the travelling exhibition Sketches of Science, which has been realized as a collaboration between the Nobel Prize Museum, Stockholm, and the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, this book presents 120 Nobel Ideas in selected photographs - and tells the interesting stories behind them.
Cuba Photography Missions
- Like photography itself, Cuba Photography Missions is slippery, complex and multi-layered. It is self-defined as a project in documentary photography; it is a collaborative international exchange among institutions and artists; it is an educational initiative; it has resulted in artIn 2019, Cuba celebrated the 60th anniversary of the revolution. In 1959, Fidel Castro and Ch矇 Guevarra ousted dictator Batista and the country entered a utopian future. But Soviet communism and the American embargo forced Cuba to survive because the country remained fundamentally committed to the socialist values of the revolution. Against this background, an extensive photography project was set up with four Cuban and four European participants. Taking the current reality of the island as a starting point, they each developed a project, which together provide a nuanced picture of the complex country. The eight projects pit the photographic interpretations of the local artists against those of the Europeans. The project starts from 'heritage' in the broadest sense of the word and focuses on the past, present and future of Cuba. Cuba Photography Missions proposes an approach to reality in the country from the personal poetics of our artists and their European counterparts, assuming Cuban contemporaneity as a topic of reflection, among universal aspects that specify the thematic and formal coherence of the exhibition. Campi Flegrei, near Naples, is a seismically active landscape that attracts, stimulates, and challenges. It seduces the soul, engages perception, and demands to be interpreted rather than merely registered. People have chosen to live amongst these unique geological and volcanic features, weaving the fabric of human occupation and taming a land in perpetual transformation, one of the harshest yet most enchanting environments. Mankind has matched its own impermanence against the earth's inevitable and unrestrained convulsions, in the process hewing out some of the most glorious examples of human endeavor, such as Cumae, the oldest Greek colony in the Western Mediterranean, the bustling Roman port of Puteoli, and the "dolce vita" savored in the baths and villas dotted around the Bay of Baiae. Luigi Spina has been exploring this land since 2020, delving into the complex, stratified geography. Key landmarks include places of memory (archaeological sites, monuments, landscapes), which, like true benchmarks of perception, outline the path towards an understanding of a world that links nature, ancient ruins, and the overwhelming presence of mankind. Greenland Arctic Flashpoint
Greenland is the world's largest island. It has long been considered a remote and isolated landmass, known for its breathtaking ice-covered landscapes. It became part of the Kingdom of Denmark with the Norse settlements in Greenland originating from Iceland. Erik the Red founded an early colony in 985 AD and the Norse rapidly established well-functioning pasture farming settlements. These Norse settlements vanished during the 14th and early 15th centuries, when the Inuit from Canada (Thule people) attacked and obliterated the Norse and then became the sole occupants of the island, expanding to the southern and western coasts.The Danish king still sent his Royal ships every year to collect important treasure but a permanent presence was not re-established until 1721 with the mission of the Danish priest Hans Egede, which was followed by the Moravian missions. These established enduring settlements and-after failing to find the Norse peoples- Christianized the Inuit. There was a lot of intermarriages over the centuries and the Greenlanders are mostly not pure Inuit anymore. The new finance PM of Greenland M繳te Egede bears the family name of Hans Egede.As the Arctic has become a new theater of military and economic competition, Greenland's strategic value has skyrocketed and its geopolitical importance is well known for President Trump織s wish to simply buy the island, raising questions about the future of this vast, underdeveloped territory.
