There's a mystery to Weegee. The American photographer's career seems to be split in two. On one side, his sensational photography printed in North American tabloids: corpses of gangsters lying in pools of their own blood; bodies trapped in battered vehicles; kingpins looking sinister behind the bars of prison wagons; dilapidated slums consumed by fire; and other harrowing evidence of the lives of the underprivileged in New York from 1935 to 1945. An Annual Affair
'An Annual Affair: Some Traditional British Calendar Customs' is the culmination of over fifteen years work by leading UK photographer Homer Sykes. Over that period he has searched out and photographed an extraordinary range of traditional annual events and customs that are steeped in British local history and heritage. Most are unknown outside their immediate community. 'An Annual Affair' is the conclusion of a career long photographic documentation of traditional annual country customs and small town traditions. It follows on from Sykes' highly successful book Once A Year, first published in 1977 and most recently republished in 2016 by Dewi Lewis Publishing. A Yellow Rose Project
August 18, 2020, marked the centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1920, women wearing yellow roses stood shoulder to shoulder in Tennessee, awaiting the roll call of men who would cast their votes for or against a woman's right to a voice in government. Though this movement won rights for some women--an achievement to be acknowledged and celebrated--the struggle did not end there. Due to states' laws and prohibitive policies, many women of color were unable to exercise their rights after the Nineteenth Amendment. It was not until much later that all American women were given the same privilege. In A Yellow Rose Project: Responses, Reflections, and Reactions to the Nineteenth Amendment, editors Meg Griffiths and Frances Jakubek have invited 106 female photographers to look back upon this part of history from various perspectives. The goal of this collaboration is to provide a focal point and physical platform for female image makers in light of the centennial, providing an artistic bridge connecting the past, present, and future. Dallas Through a Lost Lens, 1939-1954
My father, Connell R. Miller Sr. (1918-1954), was a noted Dallas, Texas, photographer whose camera captured everything from the aftermath of a tornado to the zany antics of the Dallas Bonehead Club. Dad's interest in and dedication to photography began shortly after he graduated from high school and travelled to Berlin for the 1936 Olympic Games. Bringing home a large number of unprocessed rolls of film, he set up a small darkroom where he soon became proficient in the developing and printing process. He had adopted his trademark, large format Speed Graphic press-type camera by 1939, preferring the sharp enlargements the 4x5 negatives would give him over those images taken on small 35mm film. He would have been successful solely shooting weddings, sports, or even pets, but street photography was his passion, and his domain was the world around him--the city and its people with their activities in a simpler, less hurried time.

Images mediate political operations, public and covert. Robert Frank: Portfolio
Reproduced in facsimile, Frank's first-ever portfolio is back in print after over a decadeWhen Robert Frank (1924-2019) emigrated from Zurich to the United States in 1947, the aspiring young photographer brought along his portfolio of 40 photos to help him secure employment. This eponymous volume is the facsimile of that very object. It contains Frank's earliest original photographs, taken between 1941 and 1946, as well as the images of other photographers that he had retouched. We see images of rural landscapes in Switzerland juxtaposed alongside street scenes, antique shops, fine fabrics and the glowing lights of a cinema. Portfolio thus contains the seeds of a career of such scope and influence which even the ambitious, 23-year-old Robert Frank could not have anticipated. Designed by the artist in collaboration with Gerhard Steidl, the facsimile's softcover presentation in a cardboard envelope mimics the way Frank would have originally stored this crucial selection of his work. It is also, in a sense, his first photobook, providing a glimpse into his sequencing process that would produce such acclaimed publications as The Americans and The Lines of My Hand.

Aerial Photos of Ashbourne 1985-90
More than 150 full colour aerial photographs taken from my hot air balloon of Ashbourne and local villages between 1985-90. These provide a fascinating historical record of this small market town in Derbyshire in the 1980's. So many changes have occurred since these were taken, what once were green fields and school playing fields are now housing estates. Several local villages are also included in the collection including: Osmaston, Mappleton, Clifton, Carsington, Parwich, Thorpe and Mayfield.
