Critical Collection
Images mediate political operations, public and covert. It is difficult, if not impossible, to imagine the most significant events of the last century without the photographic forms in which they were captured. Lesser known and suppressed activities that have greatly impacted modern global power dynamics also leave photographic traces, and in many cases, photography has been at the center of clandestine actions by state and parapolitical actors. Robert Frank: Portfolio
Reproduced in facsimile, Frank's first-ever portfolio is back in print after over a decadeWhen Robert Frank (1924-2019) emigrated from Zurich to the United States in 1947, the aspiring young photographer brought along his portfolio of 40 photos to help him secure employment. This eponymous volume is the facsimile of that very object. It contains Frank's earliest original photographs, taken between 1941 and 1946, as well as the images of other photographers that he had retouched. We see images of rural landscapes in Switzerland juxtaposed alongside street scenes, antique shops, fine fabrics and the glowing lights of a cinema. Portfolio thus contains the seeds of a career of such scope and influence which even the ambitious, 23-year-old Robert Frank could not have anticipated. Designed by the artist in collaboration with Gerhard Steidl, the facsimile's softcover presentation in a cardboard envelope mimics the way Frank would have originally stored this crucial selection of his work. It is also, in a sense, his first photobook, providing a glimpse into his sequencing process that would produce such acclaimed publications as The Americans and The Lines of My Hand.

Aerial Photos of Ashbourne 1985-90
More than 150 full colour aerial photographs taken from my hot air balloon of Ashbourne and local villages between 1985-90. These provide a fascinating historical record of this small market town in Derbyshire in the 1980's. So many changes have occurred since these were taken, what once were green fields and school playing fields are now housing estates. Several local villages are also included in the collection including: Osmaston, Mappleton, Clifton, Carsington, Parwich, Thorpe and Mayfield.

By viewing the corporation as a communicator, Image Worlds links the histories of labor, business, consumption, engineering, and photography, providing a new perspective on one of the largest and most representative corporations.General Electric was one of the first modern industrial corporations to use photographs and other media resources to create images of itself; and the GE archives, comprising well over a million images, form one of the largest privately held collections in the world. To produce this venturesome book, David Nye has used these vast archives to develop a new approach to corporate ideology through corporate iconography.Image Worlds embraces symbols, intentional signs, and photographs on the one hand and the history of institutional and technological development on the other. It views photography as a developing technology with a history of its own, and presents the corporation as a communicator as well as a producer and employer.Illustrated with nearly 60 photographs from the archives, the book identifies five "image markets" that GE sought to organize and address. Company engineers, workers, and managers received publications designed to appeal to their presumed interests. Some of these grew into public journals with a scientific-educational mission; others were restricted in circulation even within the company. At the same time, illustrated mass-media advertising was created to reach potential consumers of GE products. Advertising that presented an image of GE as a place where "progress was the most important product." While GE was promoting this enlightened image, the company was also using its resources to reach the voting public, hoping to gain their support for private electrification in the national debate over municipal power.

God's Promises Mean Everything spans seven years in the life of Derek, a homeless hostel resident who lives in Teesside in the North East of England. After being granted permission by the hostel, Mark visited Derek 1-2 times a month - to drop off food or hang out, talk or just listen to music. These visits, this time spent in each others' company, became essential to the work and allowed Mark and Derek to develop a unique project that was fully collaborative. The book is an immersive long-term character portrait that extends over a number of years, but limits its perspective to a single room. Haunted by the spectre of the family he lost, Derek lives without the safety nets many of us take for granted. Significant life choices - involving financial difficulties, mental and physical health - are always close to the surface. God's Promises Mean Everything reveals the unsettling fragility in the connections that make up our everyday experience. It is a personal, empathetic portrait of a man trapped in difficult circumstances. A story of disconnection and loss, but also of survival and daily rebellion.
The Topographic Imaginary
Since the early 1980s, art photographers from metropolitan France have been training their lenses on ordinary landscapes throughout the country they call home. The Topographic Imaginary is the first book to study this important and flourishing trend. It examines work by artists who meld documentary and creative modes to attune viewers to places that mainstream culture tends to tune out, but which, as Ari J. Blatt argues, are in fact more meaningful than they initially appear. From views of building sites in Paris, peri-urban edgelands, or a tangle of trees in a forest, to those that ponder the play of light and shadow on roadside fields in Normandy or the tacky colors painted on dated village shopfronts, images that signal the emergence of a "topographic turn" in contemporary French photography constitute new ways of seeing and sensing France's diverse national territory. As Blatt suggests, they also represent a visual laboratory through which to investigate how landscape "scapes" our understanding of French culture. Tokyo Street Photography
This is a photo book about Tokyo and people I met in the streets of the metropolis - 40 artistically remastered photographs. It is a very unique and special gift for yourself or your friends and family. It takes an open mind, a lot of time, plenty of luck and a good camera to do street photography. But, alas, most of the time the result is disappointing. The "decisive moment" is a nice concept but nothing you can force to achieve. It is there, or not - mostly not. And even if you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and manage to press the button just then - in the end what you have is a photograph. Well, great, but 4 million pictures are uploaded to Instagram every hour (more than 1000 every second). So your picture is nothing but a drop in the ocean. Maybe a special, wonderful, beautiful drop - but: So what? Who cares? And if you have a tendency to see beauty or greatness or singularity in everyday things or scenes and take pictures thereof you are in trouble. Show them to other people and you can literally see how they think you are not quite right in your mind. These ordinary things? Photography does not end with the click on the button. If you take it seriously you know that the raw image is just the beginning. For me, the long sessions in front of the screen, the dark room of today, bring the moments when street photography metamorphises in art work. Pictures of little things, tiny moments, nothing important. But beautiful. Or interesting. Or even meaningful. At least: different.

Inside the Walther Collection's project space in downtown Chelsea and its role as a workshop, research center and forum for contemporary photographyPublished with The Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm and New York. Between April 2011 and January 2021, the Walther Collection operated a project space in Chelsea, New York. Located in Suite 718 of the landmark West Chelsea Arts Building, it became an incubator for ideas, promoting sustained inquiry into the collection's three main areas of focus: African, Asian and vernacular photography, expanding the history of the medium worldwide. The Project Space presented exhibitions, organized rigorous symposia, hosted public lectures and acted as a research hub for the collection's publications. It was a library, gallery, workspace and "forum for collective thought." Recording the space's extensive activities, Suite 718 reflects on the significance of the Walther Collection and its relationship to New York's cultural milieu. It presents each exhibition with select artworks, installation images and texts, as well as an illustrated chronology and overview of the collection's 53 exhibitions and 18 publications.
Jacques-Henri Lartigue: The Proof of Color
Breathtaking autochrome images capture the beauty and wonder that nurtured Lartigue's love of photographyAn indisputably important figure in photography, Jacques-Henri Lartigue was fascinated by new inventions such as the automobile and telecommunications, and concurrently the new possibilities that the photographic medium offered. In 1912 he began taking photographs in a radically different way by using a surprising anachronistic technique: stereoscopic autochrome on glass plates. This process relied on meticulous technical preparation and a long, precise exposure time for his staged compositions. The end result is not a print but a double stereoscopic view that he projected onto a screen. Lartigue filled each frame with bright colors through a mix of sunny landscapes, dazzling flowers and playful scenes of his well-to-do family and friends at leisure.During the short time he produced these images--from 1912 to 1927--Lartigue made an important series of double-view autochromes, from which the 90 remaining pieces are presented here for the first time in their entirety and at full scale. In order to understand the effect this series has had in the history of color photography, the images in The Proof of Color are accompanied by a contextual commentary.Born to a prosperous family, Jacques-Henri Lartigue (1894-1986) was unknown as a photographer until 1963 when his work was shown for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. That same year, a spread published in Life magazine in an issue on John F. Kennedy's death also introduced Lartigue's work to a wider public.
