At the Limits of the Gaze
The first English-language collection of Takuma Nakahira's influential writings on photography. At the Limits of the Gaze collects the writings of photographer and critic Takuma Nakahira in English for the first time. A crucial figure within the history of Japanese photography, Nakahira is best known outside of Japan as a founding member of Provoke, the experimental magazine of photographs, essays, and poetry, first published in 1968, and for his important photobook For a Language to Come (1970). Throughout a decades-long career, Nakahira raised incisive questions about visual culture and politics in both his photography and his writing. As part of a dynamic moment of artistic and political experimentation in Tokyo, he wrote on a range of topics hardly limited to photography: art, film, journalism, literature, politics, television, and more. Nakahira's essays brim with urgency, relentlessly interrogating photography's relationship to power, the connection between language and images, and the gaze. As editors and translators Daniel Abbe and Franz Prichard write, Nakahira's essays "both suggest doubt about, and possibilities for, a photographically mediated reckoning with the world."

Before & After
A study of the history of before-and-after images of catastrophes, bombed-out cities, and large-scale political transformations. Catastrophes, bombed-out cities, large-scale political transformations: "Image complexes" of humanitarian and ecological upheaval document the world as a sequence of catastrophes. But who decides how events are presented, determines the resolution of our visual worlds, and controls the circulation or censorship of images? Eyal and Ines Weizman trace the history of the before-and-after image from nineteenth-century photography to contemporary satellite images and discover a gap that not only conceals the devastating event: it is the human subject itself that is in danger of disappearing from the images. Does humanitarian work, the documentation and reconstruction of war crimes, in which people's fates and rights should be at the center of attention, paradoxically enter a post-human phase? How can the gap between images become a site of critical counter-reading rather than a symbol of erasure? In the context of their current research, Eyal and Ines Weizman discuss the history, present, and future of the paradigm of the before-and-after image in an exclusive conversation with Marie Glassl.

This book pairs their photographs with poems by Los Angeles--based poets Tina Demirdjian, Armin矇 Iknadossian, Arthur Kayzakian, Shah矇 Mankerian, and Raffi Joe Wartanian. All a Blur
The luminous work of Bill Armstrong has long stretched the boundaries and expectations of contemporary photography. In his explorations and subversion of the ostensible objectivity and precision that have distinguished photography among the visual arts, Armstrong foregrounds the medium's qualities that photographers had been attempting to exploit since the beginning of the twentieth century: color and focus. All A Blur showcases Mr. Armstrong's Infinity series, an ongoing project he has been working on for over twenty-five years. The book presents twenty-one different portfolios, all made by using his unique process of photographing a collage of found or appropriated images extremely out of focus or distorted by handheld time exposures. The variety of subjects and results he achieves with this process is so broad it has been said that he has developed a medium of his own invention that lies at the intersection of photography, painting and collage. With mysterious and poetic images that reflect on history, philosophy, identity and spirituality, Armstrong conjures a unique alternate reality that might exist in dreams, in memory, or, perhaps, in a parallel universe. At the same time, the subject of the work is color. By taking away focus and the usual expectations of photography, Armstrong is able to investigate the qualities and effects of pure color in a profound way, freed from the limits of representation.
David Yarrow
Celebrating the full arc of 40 years' worth of Yarrow's most iconic images, this massive retrospective is the must-have photography monograph of the year. Legendary British photographer David Yarrow showcases 150 of his best images in a curated mix of yet-to-be-published and best-selling photographs. The Collection details the artist's journey from a 20-year-old shooting pitchside at the 1986 FIFA World Cup Final to photographing the natural world and, more recently, simply telling stories. His personal anthology of the Wild West sought to entertain, not teach, and its success encouraged him to tell historical stories elsewhere. These large-scale productions across multiple continents have told epic stories, from a lion on a catwalk in South Africa to a car race at Willow Springs International Raceway to evocative scenes in some of the world's most exclusive towns. Yarrow refuses to be conveniently categorized within a specific genre of photography through the stories he tells. This collection of his work showcases his rigorous aesthetic program and his relentless journey that has taken him around the world, photographing subject matter that includes sports stars, wildlife, supermodels, and frontier towns. The Collection offers additional insight through behind-the-scenes photos and Yarrow's own first-person contextual narratives. His work has earned him a global following, garnering wide acclaim in the fine-art market. In 2024, he appeared on Artsy's Top 10 Most Inquired About Artists and was the only photographer to feature on the list. His work is exhibited at some of Europe and North America's foremost museums, and globally in more than fifty leading fine-art galleries. Philanthropy has always been central to Yarrow's mission, and over the past decade, he has raised more than $20 million, focusing on conservation, the socially disadvantaged, and pediatric cancer care. The David Yarrow Family Foundation raises money every week from sales of Yarrow's work.
Places in Time
This book is a compilation of four decades of pictures taken in places familiar and remote. It is entirely of the film era and ends with the 20th century. In Jeffrey Heller's 20s and 30s, he had two professions--he was working as an architect as well as a professional photographer, burning the candle at both ends. He had briefly studied with Ansel Adams and for a year with Minor White. In his mid-30s, he realized that he could not continue both professions and decided to make architecture his primary calling and photography his artistic outlet. This freed Heller to photograph as he wished, and he took his cameras with him wherever he went, whether the travel was vacation or business he would make time to photograph. Heller always used professional equipment and took his photography as seriously as his architecture. Heller worked with his wife, a photographer and artist herself, and went through probably 2000 images to Select the ones for this book. The book is from a wide range of places, but the emphasis is on the image and not the place. The photographs are an impression in time and character and visual content.
Movement at the Still Point: An Ode to Dance
Renowned portrait photographer Mark Mann documents an impressive host of dancers--their eloquent bodies in posed tranquility and vibrant motion--representing years of excellence and varied disciplines of the art form. A celebration of the strength and emotive ability of dancers, this book is a collection of images that captures the dynamism and energy of the mediums of both dance and photography. In homage to Mann's hero Irving Penn, he installed a backdrop of old monochromatic muslin. Dancers from many genres--ballet, jazz, African, tap, Broadway theater, hip-hop, ballroom--perform and discuss their passions about the art form in this stark environment. Mann captures the humanity and spontaneity of principal and lead dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Martha Graham Dance Company, New York City Ballet, and many other troupes. Subjects include dance personalities Misty Copeland, Carmen de Lavallade, Tiler Peck, Chita Rivera, James Whiteside, Omari Wiles, Xin Ying, and many others. As a photographer, Mann is used to working hard at making something happen in his images; here, he has taken a slightly more passive role, witnessing and capturing the expressive and talented subjects that take control of each frame. This book is a testament to the emotional and physical power of each dancer, in stillness and in motion.

Buried in Style

For more than twenty years, Regula Tschumi, who holds a doctorate in ethnology, has researched and photographed the Ghanaian funeral cult. Ephemeral Field Journal
In the footsteps of Monet: Sarah Schorr's captivating experiment with color, water, and still lifeWhen Claude Monet settled in Giverny in 1883, he designed a flower garden full of impressive color compositions for observing light and time. The American artist Sarah Schorr understands Monet's garden as a creative, living laboratory. Her images in this book were inspired by the movement of water in Monet's garden - from the tiny teardrops of rain to the steady stream feeding the water lily pond. By collecting fallen, injured flowers in Monet's historic green spaces, Schorr transforms them into striking works of art by bringing them to life with paint, light, paper, water, and photography: experimental still lifes. Ephemeral Field Journal is an evocative artist's journal in which Schorr evokes the fragility of nature and illuminates the complex interplay of climate change, beauty, and loss. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Monet's death, the project will be exhibited internationally in 2025 and 2026.

Richard Avedon Immortal
An unflinching exploration of aging from one of the twentieth century's most influential photographersFor more than half a century, Richard Avedon sought to represent advancing age in the faces of the people he photographed. From his earliest years at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue through to the twenty-first century, Avedon routinely and audaciously broke the rule of flattering public personalities in his portraits. Instead, he chose to highlight the onslaught of what he called the "avalanche of age," dramatizing the universal experience of getting older.Accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition at The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Immortal is the first book to delve into Avedon's unflinching representation of aging throughout his career. This elegant hardcover volume features nearly 100 portraits of cultural luminaries, each printed in striking tritone, such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Truman Capote, Marcel Duchamp, Duke Ellington, Toni Morrison, Patti Smith, and Stephen Sondheim, as well as one of Avedon's last self-portraits. Texts by a star-studded cohort of authors, including Vince Aletti, Adam Gopnik, Paul Roth, and Ga禱lle Morel, shed new light on an under-represented element of Avedon's practice. Thoughtfully edited and beautifully produced, Immortal testifies emphatically to the determination with which people confront the relentless advance of mortality.

Lee Friedlander: Christmas
With a healthy sprinkle of plastic and tinsel, Friedlander's visions of a commercial, uniquely American Christmas evoke both irony and nostalgiaWhether or not you celebrated Christmas at some point during the last 70 years, you have no doubt encountered many of the scenes shown here in Lee Friedlander's eclectic black-and-white documentation of the holiday season across America. From city sidewalks to cookie-cutter suburbs, Friedlander captures it all: main street store window displays; plastic nativities on snow-covered lawns; inflatable snowglobes and Santa Clauses; questionable St. Nicholas-themed lingerie; oversize or underwhelming Christmas trees; and houses so covered in string lights as to demand nothing short of a miracle from the local power grid.As in all of his work, Friedlander's images of Christmas reflect his own version of the holiday. Is Christmas in America a religious celebration? A commercial precept? A misunderstanding? An indulgent blasphemy? Or all of the above? The only certain thing is that December 25 has provided an opportunity for the people's photographer to hold up a mirror to a flawed, inventive, preoccupied and wonderful society.Lee Friedlander (born 1934) has published more than 60 monographs since 1969. He was represented alongside Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand in the 1967 New Documents exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, now understood as a landmark event in American documentary photography, and received his own retrospective at the same museum in 2005. He has lived and worked in New York since 1956.
