Making a Way
JEB is a portal maker--one of those loving souls who made sure we would have a way back to witness the world-changing bravery of our communities. --Alexis Pauline GumbsJEB (Joan E. Biren) first introduced viewers to her photographs in 1979 when she published Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians, a groundbreaking celebration of women loving women. In the years that followed, JEB collaborated with poets, musicians, filmmakers, elected officials, healthcare providers, factory workers, spiritual leaders, and others who built communities and worked for political change. Her second book Making a Way: Lesbians Out Front, published in 1987, depicts the spirit and energy of this movement in more than a hundred emotionally resonant photographs that take us from passionate activism to thoughtful solitude, while remarks and remembrances from each woman photographed deepen the historic record. This reissue of Making a Way adds insightful new essays by Cheryl Clarke and JD Samson, resulting in an essential document of an era whose impact continues to be felt across our society today.
The Family of Migrants
Family of Migrants is inspired by the legendary exhibition Family of Man, an ode to humanity created by photographer and curator Edward Steichen, that opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955. At the time, Family of Man told the universal and timeless story of humanity. Family of Migrants will do the same, but with a focus on perhaps the most universal and timeless topic of all: migration. This book features around 400 photographs and will show the most striking photography on the subject of migration, bringing together photographers and photos from all over the world. Old and new photos, made between the late 19th century and the present day, as well as color and black-and-white are shown side to side. The photos deal with topics such as departure, journey and arrival, and themes like family, loss and love. Together they show that the movement of people around the world is a timeless and universal phenomenon that shaped our world. The book accompanies the inauguration of the FENIX museum in Rotterdam, April 2025.
Wonderland of Wind and Sand
Through poetry and photography, Wonderland of Wind and Sand celebrates the extraordinary and awe-inspiring Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in southern Colorado. Sweeping views of the sand dunes are counterbalanced by finite details such as beetle tracks in the sand. Award-winning photographer Jean E. Sidinger's photos and her heartfelt poetic messages enhance each other with the turn of every page.Forty-four down-to-earth poems vary from inspiring, to playful, to thought-provoking. They take the concept of the park beyond the visual to a personalized articulated interpretation. Readers will climb High Dune as they read "The Ascent," sense euphoria over the bold autumn leaves against a cobalt sky as they visit the island or explore the Montville Trail, and be moved to empathy for creatures facing blizzard conditions.Sidinger made repeat visits to the park over a period of more than forty-some years-visits that included every season and contact with its lesser-known aspects. The diverse poems and over one hundred photographs created during those years make Wonderland of Wind and Sand a unique and invaluable treasure for both novices and those who know the park well.A portion of the proceeds from this book will benefit the Western National Parks Association.

David Alekhuogie: A Reprise
In A Reprise, David Alekhuogie remixes Walker Evans's photographs of African art, provoking timely questions about authorship and authenticity. A Reprise, David Alekhuogie's first monograph, confronts the intriguing legacy of narrative and authorship behind Western presentations of African art, and poses timely questions about how Black aesthetics are circulated, accessed, valued, and interpreted today. In 1935, Walker Evans was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to photograph hundreds of African sculptures for the exhibition African Negro Art. Nearly ninety years later, Alekhuogie began investigating Evans's images, provocatively remixing them into his own vibrant and multilayered photographic collages. Transposing facsimiles of Evans's original images onto cardboard or paper structures of his own making, Alekhuogie rephotographs these image-sculptures against striking backdrops--often using East and West African textiles--thereby inviting multiple dimensions of viewership. Alekhuogie's images draw upon the musical idiom of the reprise--a performance of repetition--and stake a claim to crucial, restorative ideas around Black antiquity by questioning our relationship to what we consider fake or original, art or archive.
The Third Coast
A full-color photographic journey around the Great Lakes Locals affectionately call the Great Lakes the "third coast"--though at 4,500 miles, this beloved freshwater shoreline is the nation's longest, covering more distance than the country's Atlantic and Pacific coasts combined. Divided into four galleries by lake and season, David Zurick's award-winning photographs spotlight the distinct personality of each coastline and the people who call its shores home. We visit windswept Lake Superior in winter, Lake Michigan bursting into spring, Lakes Erie and Ontario under the summer sun, and Lake Huron in the changing palette of autumn, with an additional gallery devoted to the straits and rivers that connect them. An evocative foreword from award-winning nature writer Jerry Dennis sets the stage for this sweeping visual tour. In Zurick's photographs, lifelong lovers of the Great Lakes will find the familiar shorelines of coastal hometowns, summer refuges, and secret fishing spots--as well as images that reawaken us to the majesty and mystery of North America's "freshwater seas."

Jean Gaumy: A Certain Nature
Through his detailed investigations of flora and fauna, Gaumy devises an innovative view of Monet's Giverny gardenClaude Monet's garden at Giverny is famous the world over for its water lily pond, which gave rise to some of the artist's most dazzling paintings. Magnum photographer Jean Gaumy (born 1948) has had privileged access to Monet's garden for many years, allowing him to conduct photographic research inspired by his love of science and botany. Drawing from the joy he experienced in his family's garden while young, he has sought to re-create that childhood curiosity and sense of wonder through photography that is both abstract and naturalistic. Jean Gaumy's Giverny is not an atlas of forms, but rather a photographic experiment in documenting nature from different angles. In these otherworldly duotone photographs, Monet's storied garden becomes something out of time in compositions bordering on the pictorial in their documenting of microscopic details.

Their Kindred Earth
Evocative new photographs of Connecticut by celebrated photographer William Earle Williams provide insight to the stories of Black American historyTheir Kindred Earth gathers images of Black Connecticut's historic sites by celebrated photographer William Earle Williams. A series of texts illuminate how these sites connect to the larger national and international narrative of Black American history. Over the past forty years artist William Earle Williams (born 1950) has made sites of African American history more visible through his exquisite photographs. Mentored in the 1970s by the famed photographer Walker Evans, who had a home in Lyme, Williams attended the Yale School of Art at Evans's suggestion. From that Connecticut inception, Williams embarked on a decades-long journey to identify and photograph places across the country that hold histories of the slave trade, the Underground Railroad, and emancipation. Many remain unmarked and largely overlooked in a society that has long ignored Black history. New archival research has yielded revelations about how we understand our local history. In this book, Williams' photographs bring visibility and pay tribute to the unrecognized people who contributed to Connecticut culture and its landscape. The book includes photographs from New London, Old Lyme, Farmington, Middletown, Norwich, New Haven, Hartford, Canterbury, Brooklyn (CT), New Jersey, and Manhattan, as well as sites of importance to Black figures in the state, such as Frederick Douglass and David Ruggles. It features essays by Frank Mitchell, Jennifer Stettler Parsons, Carolyn Wakeman, and a dialogue between William Earle Williams and Deborah Willis.
