The first Nativity Scene was a live one created by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223. He wanted to promote the reverence of the Christian family and had villagers with animals recreate the birth of Jesus. This became wildly popular all over the Christian world, but especially in Europe where it gets colder in the winter the further north you get. So there is a limit to this kind of performance. Naturally it then evolved with human size figures mainly out-doors and with smaller figurines you can have in-doors and which can be there for a longer period without nourishment or sleep. Add to this all the special big trucks. 8.4 million people are employed in the trucking industry, 3.54 million are truck drivers, excluding the self-employed (2022). Dorothea Lange
An expansive look at portraiture, identity, and inequality as seen in Dorothea Lange's iconic photographs Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) aimed to make pictures that were, in her words, "important and useful." Her decades-long investigation of how photography could articulate people's core values and sense of self helped to expand our current understanding of portraiture and the meaning of documentary practice. Lange's sensitive portraits showing the common humanity of often marginalized people were pivotal to public understanding of vast social problems in the twentieth century. Compassion guided Lange's early portraits of Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as her depictions of striking workers, migrant farmers, rural African Americans, Japanese Americans in internment camps, and the people she met while traveling in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Catalan Pastis - Catalonian cakes
Catalan Pastis is the third volume in our series World of Cakes. In Luxembourg A Piece of Cake we toured the incredible cake shop world in tiny Luxembourg. The variety far exceeds what you would expect in a country smaller than Rhode Island. The book was an unplanned accident. In Florida Cakes we continued the habit of taking pictures of some of the cakes we purchased. Our life took us to the sunny beaches of Florida for a while. The cake designs in Florida are just incredible. Now back in Europe we had business in Spain and especially in Catalonia, which we enjoyed during a number of months. Again, we took advantage of its uniquely enjoyable cake shops bombonierie making the most wonderful cakes pastis in Catalan - some which are not found elsewhere. There must be at least one thousand cake shops and cafes in Barcelona alone serving these great specialities. We will try to discover some of the secrets behind this formidable variety and quality of Catalan pastis Catalan cakes. You will be surprised! We very much hope you will enjoy the tour and will take the opportunity to visit Spain and Catalonia yourself one day! The Creation of Place or Gardens of Sesshu 創造される場所または雪舟の庭園
During the Muromachi period (15th century) in Japan, the painter-monk Sesshu Toyo left behind over fifty authentic works, including six national treasures. Not only in painting, but also in garden design, he created magnificent and elegant gardens. However, there is no supporting evidence specifically attributing these gardens to Sesshu.　Nevertheless, even if the authenticity remains uncertain, or if time has altered the form of the gardens, perhaps what is more important is not their authenticity (being real) but their vitality (being alive). Yet, in the face of these vast and awe-inspiring spaces, we may be perplexed about what we should find within them, as we do not share the spatial style of the Muromachi period.　It is said that Zen gardens conceal one essential point that is not explicitly revealed. However, in Sesshu's gardens, it seems that multiple perspectives are intentionally arranged. Northern India
Kashmir is in the Northwestern region of India. It's an area with rich fertile agricultural valleys and snow-clad mountains. Kashmir borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The locations for my photos in Kashmir were Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Martand. I have seen many changes from 1973 to 2012. In 1973 it was a quiet peaceful area with rich agricultural fields and small villages. As the population grew the people began building houses and shops along the roadsides and have encroached on the agricultural areas. On my last trip there I saw many large houses that were at least 5,000 square feet, so there is a lot wealth in the area. The Lehi/Ladakh area is now known as the Leh District and is unlike any other part of India. It's a Buddhist area and has many monasteries throughout the area. The largest is the Hemis Monastery. The Hemis festival takes place in June/July and is dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche.) The monks ware colorful costumes, masks and dance to music played by musicians to traditional Tibetan music with four pairs of cymbals, large pan drums, 5 small trumpets and large size wind instruments. Leh is 11,500 ft / 3524 m above sea level and you must give yourself a few extra days to acclimatize before you climb the steps to the monasteries. It's my recommendation to start your journey in Srinagar as its 6,600 feet above sea level. Stay there for three nights then drive to Leh with an overnight stop along the way. Rest for one day in Leh then drive to the Nubra Valley. You will pass over Khardung La pass at 18, 380 ft / 5606 m then to the Nubra valley. The Diskit and Samtenling monasteries are the main ones to see. When you return to Leh you should be acclimatized to visit the Leh Palace & Monastery, Thiksey, Shey, Thesey and Hemis Monasteries. I highly recommend The Hotel Royal in Leh. The Nubra Valley is about 93 miles (150 km) north of Leh, India. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. / 3048 meters above sea level. Like the rest of Ladakh the Nubra valley is a high desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds, and on high slopes. The villages are irrigated and very fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard, for oil and a variety of fruits. Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Ladakhis who speak Ladakhi; the majority of them are Buddhist. Nagakot is a village about 32 km east of Katmandu, Nepal in the Bhaktapur District. The elevation is 2,195 meters, it is considered one of the most scenic spots in the Bhaktapur District. Its renowned for its sunrise views of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest as well as other snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan range of Eastern Nepal. Darjeeling is a city in the Indian State of West Bengal and was a part of Nepal until the British took it from Nepal under their rule in India. It's internationally known as a tourist area with beautiful tea plantations and monasteries in the area. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad connects Darjeeling (6,812 ft. / 2011 meters) with Siliguri (600 ft. / 183 meters) it has 919 curves, 556 bridges, 3 loops and 5 Z sections. I did a trek from Darjeeling to Kalimpong, it's a great way to meet local people and visit the tea plantations. My trek took me to the Peshok Tea Plantation and the Bhutia Busty Monastery along the way to Kalimpong. I highly recommend hiring a guide which will help you navigate the trails.
Behind The Eye Of The Camera
Dr. Schoenfeld has maintained a strong interest in photography throughout his life. While attending his dad's summer camp. Bob documented his journey as soon as he was old enough to operate a camera. During his 5 years abroad, attending medical school in Switzerland. he documented the wondrous environment he was fortunate to be immersed in as well as his many of his overseas adventuresIn 1993 his work was exhibited in the Salmagundi Photo Club in New York City. His photos have also been chosen for juried exhibits by Mr. Miles Barth from the International Center of Photography, as well as Edward Robertson from the Museum of Modern Art. department of Photography.He also has had two shows at one of New York's most prestigious art galleries. the National Art Club, at Gramercy Park.The editor of the Art Times, which is a monthly art resource newspaper, distributed to most Art Galleries in the North East, wrote in her March 1997 review of Dr. Schoenfeld's exhibit called Cosmos, at the National Art Club that, "The exhibit was hard to walk away from" and she concludes with the statement "that each work was as a meditation." Dr. Schoenfeld also has had numerous photographic exhibits on Long Island, including the Huntington's Cinema Art Centre as well as Long Island libraries.

Building a White Nation
Throughout the apartheid era South Africa maintained a wide-reaching propaganda apparatus. At its core was the information service that strongly capitalised on photography to visually articulate the minority regime's racist political messages, promote Afrikaner nationalism, and consolidate white rule. By unearthing a substantial corpus of photographs that so far have been hidden in archives, this book offers a distinctive perspective on the institutional context of the regime's photographic production and how it was tightly linked to the objective to build a white nation. American Police Cars 2
Police cars are usually very visible in our society, advertising the important role of police and loved by children. The first police car in America was an electric wagon used by the Akron Police Department in Akron, Ohio in 1899. The car was built by city mechanical engineer Frank Loomis and could reach 16 mph (26 km/h) and travel 30 mi (48 km) before needing to be reacharged. Law enforcement vehicles make the police mobile and some of the cars can reach150 mph (almost 250 km/h). Only the fastest supercars can outrun these highway patrols! Later-or much, much later-someone else in turn will try to understand our silvery traces. These are the threads that Melissa McCarthy follows, unpicks, weaves again into a nexus of light and time: the mirrored silver cells of a shark's eyeball, sunlight glinting off the foam and sea wrack of the Aegean on flower with corpses, the silver salts of photographic paper, silver grave-treasures at Ur.Like an archaeologist in her own strange literary landscape, McCarthy cuts through layers of history and technology to realign the dead and their images. She examines both what can be photographed and what remains always just beyond the frame, and photography itself. It's a practice involving chemicals and the action of light.
