Wild Florida
Florida Book Awards, Gold Medal for Visual ArtsFlorida Authors and Publishers Association, Sunshine State AwardFlorida Authors and Publishers Association President's Book Awards, Gold Medal for Science/NatureNational League of American Pen Women, Inc., Marjorie Davies Roller Nonfiction AwardBrilliant wildlife photography and intimate storytelling showcase Florida's animal species within their natural habitats Kirsten Hines provides a captivating visual and narrative journey into the ecology of Florida's animals in Wild Florida. The intimate and artistic photographs in this book introduce readers to the wide variety of wildlife that thrives within the state. In essays that accompany her images, Hines offers stories and observations about each species and encourages conservation of the natural areas that support them. Hines takes readers along with her on excursions through swamps and into camping stakeouts, sharing experiences such as watching the movements of Florida black bears for months to capture the perfect shot of a mother with her cubs. She introduces an array of species that call the state home, from the iconic Florida panther and the endemic red widow spider to the loggerhead sea turtle and even invasive species like the Burmese python. These pages feature Magnificent Frigatebirds from the tropical environments of the south, beavers from the temperate north, and animals that live within the gradual blending of environmental borders between these climatic extremes across the peninsula. Wild Florida also highlights the unique ecosystems where these creatures can be found, including locations such as Ocala National Forest, Big Cypress National Preserve, Dry Tortugas National Park, and Everglades National Park. Hines's patience in studying the secret lives of Florida's animals results in surprising revelations about the hidden wonders that readers can even discover in their own backyards. This book not only champions the diversity of Florida's natural features, but also inspires readers to take action to ensure the treasures of the state remain protected. These elegantly presented words and images make a strong case for preserving the beauty and wonder of the state's animals and their environments for years to come.
An Unflinching Look
An Unflinching Look is an examination of a unique North American ecosystem in decline, investigated through eighty-five duotone photographs, scientific analysis, and critical interpretation. The project's focus is the area of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge on Florida's Gulf Coast and the history and fate of its wetlands. Dimmitt began photographing in the salt-damaged sawgrass savannas and spring creeks there as a way of examining and reckoning with the ecosystem loss and of understanding what was becoming of his native Florida. He narrowed his focus to a small, remote area that he knows well and loves. Dimmitt's intention in bearing witness to this loss has been to portray the ruined landscape with respect and beauty. To document the progress of the saltwater intrusion, Dimmitt has rephotographed landscapes that he first photographed more than forty years ago. His photographs reveal the impact of several factors that are causing the loss of an entire ecosystem: rising sea levels caused by global warming, excessive pumping from the underground aquifer, and the contamination of limited natural resources. In addition to Dimmitt's photographs, An Unflinching Look includes contributions from four other experts. Susan Cerulean--the author of several books about Florida's natural environment--provides a foreword that tackles loss and the complicated water and environmental issues raised by the rising sea levels at Chassahowitzka. Matthew McCarthy--a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Marine Science and currently a research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory--offers a scientific meditation on deforestation along Florida's Gulf Coast using aerial photography to document the increasing saltwater intrusion over a seven-year period. Alison N繹rdstrom--an independent photography curator, scholar, and writer--offers her expert take on the photographic context for Dimmitt's breathtaking images. And Alexa Dilworth--a native Floridian who was the publishing director and senior editor at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University for more than twenty years--pens an afterword to the book, exploring her experience of natural Florida, the degradation of the state's environment, and Dimmitt's photography. Additionally, distinguished photographer Emmet Gowin contributes a reflection on what is required of a photographer when photographing damaged landscapes.

For Hoffman, a former aeronautical engineer, this daily ritual cracked open profound revelations about the connectedness of all things, the importance of place, and her own life. This book shares a selection of the breathtaking photographs from Hoffman's enormous archive, accompanied by perceptive, deeply felt, and oftentimes humorous essays illuminating the insights gained through this daily creative practice. Casa Susanna
In the 1950s and '60s, an underground network of transgender women, gender nonconforming people, and men who dressed as women found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills, New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed--dressed as and living as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression. Casa Susanna opens up that now-lost world. The photographs--mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004--chronicle the experiences of these women in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection, and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who--on her own journey toward womanhood--created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could do the same. Supplementing the images, excerpts from the magazine Transvestia record a different kind of space where those who had been outcast by a rigidly binary society could connect. The people who came to Casa Susanna found a space where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other's femininity, as they could not elsewhere. Their creations are also a reminder that there were, and still are, many ways to explore the boundaries of gender.
Harry Gruyaert
When Harry Gruyaert first visited Morocco in 1969, it was love at first sight. On every return visit, he has tried to relive that initial feeling of enchantment, the splendid harmony between form and color, people, and nature. From the High Atlas Mountains to the desert, from rural areas to the bustling streets of Marrakech and Essaouira, Gruyaert's photographs take us on a dreamlike cinematic journey through a reality that is nonetheless highly physical, its textures shaped by light and shadow. Each image has its own power, and all of them reflect the importance of family, community, and faith to the people of Morocco, as well as Gruyaert's own innate curiosity and desire to understand different realities.
Christmas Nativity United States
The first Nativity Scene was a live one created by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223. He wanted to promote the reverence of the Christian family and had villagers with animals recreate the birth of Jesus. This became wildly popular all over the Christian world, but especially in Europe where it gets colder in the winter the further north you get. So there is a limit to this kind of performance. Naturally it then evolved with human size figures mainly out-doors and with smaller figurines you can have in-doors and which can be there for a longer period without nourishment or sleep. Please see our other books on Nativities, in Spain and Central Europe, We wish all a Merry Christmas and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.

How Do I Do That in Photoshop?
The simplest, easiest, and quickest ways to learn over 250 Photoshop tips, tricks, and techniques! Scott Kelby, the world's #1 best-selling photography technique books author, is back with a totally updated and revised new edition of his bestselling book How Do I Do That In Photoshop? This book presents an entirely new concept in Photoshop books--one that's designed from the ground up to get you straight to whatever it is you need to do in Photoshop right now, get your answer fast, and get you back to editing your images in Photoshop. Photoshop has so much depth and so many features, tools, and filters that sometimes the things you need are...well...kinda hidden or not really obvious. In fact, there will probably be a lot of times when you need to get something done in Photoshop, and you know Photoshop can do it (because Photoshop can literally do just about anything), but you have no idea where Adobe hid that feature, or what the "secret handshake" or shortcut is to do that thing you need to do right now. That's why this book was created: to quickly get you to the technique, the shortcut, the setting, or exactly the right thing, so you can do what you need to do right now. Here's how it works: When you need to know how to do a particular thing, you turn to the chapter where it would be found (Layers, Printing, Masking, Special Effects, etc.), find the thing you need to do (it's easy; each page covers just one single topic), and Scott tells you exactly how to do it just like he was sitting there beside you, using the same casual style as if he were telling a friend. That way, you get back to editing your images fast. This isn't a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed multistep concepts. This is a book on which button to click, which setting to use, and exactly how and when to use it, so you're never "stuck" in Photoshop again. This will be your "go-to" book that sits within reach any time you're working in Photoshop, and you are going to love having this type of help right at your fingertips. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1: How to Get Around Like a Pro Chapter 2: How to Use Photoshop's Tools Chapter 3: How to Use Camera Raw Like a Boss Chapter 4: How to Use Camera Raw's AI-Powered Masking Tools Chapter 5: How to Crop, Resize & Stuff Like That Chapter 6: How to Work with Layers Chapter 7: How to Adjust Your Image Chapter 8: How to Remove, Add & Change Stuff Chapter 9: How to Make Beautiful Prints Chapter 10: How to Do the Most Popular Special Effects Chapter 11: How to Sharpen Your Images Chapter 12: Other Stuff You'll Want to Know

American Big Trucks
The big truck is a dominant feature in our modern society. Alexander Winston sold his first horseless semi-truck 1899 and in 1913 Maine was the first state to limit the wight of trucks on its roads, to 18,000 pounds and that becane a norm. There are abt 4.06 million semi-trucks operating in the USA. The payload is abt 42,000 and 48,000 on the usual semi-trailer, meaning the trailer fleet can move abt 170,520 million pounds around. Add to this all the special big trucks. 8.4 million people are employed in the trucking industry, 3.54 million are truck drivers, excluding the self-employed (2022). Follow the big trucks and their loads in pictures and short comments. We honor this great industry on 4th of July and Labor Day and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
Dorothea Lange
An expansive look at portraiture, identity, and inequality as seen in Dorothea Lange's iconic photographs Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) aimed to make pictures that were, in her words, "important and useful." Her decades-long investigation of how photography could articulate people's core values and sense of self helped to expand our current understanding of portraiture and the meaning of documentary practice. Lange's sensitive portraits showing the common humanity of often marginalized people were pivotal to public understanding of vast social problems in the twentieth century. Compassion guided Lange's early portraits of Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as her depictions of striking workers, migrant farmers, rural African Americans, Japanese Americans in internment camps, and the people she met while traveling in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Drawing on new research, the authors look at Lange's roots in studio portraiture and demonstrate how her influential and widely seen photographs addressed issues of identity as well as social, economic, and racial inequalities--topics that remain as relevant for our times as they were for hers. In Our Hands
A groundbreaking exhibition catalogue of Native, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit photography from the nineteenth century to the present day Photographs of and by Native people have long been exhibited in museums. All too often, however, such exhibitions have misrepresented vital cultural and historical contexts, neglecting the depth of practice, supporting scholarship, and Native perspectives relevant to the work. By developing a broadly representative curatorial council of prominent academics and artists, more than half of whom represent Native communities in the United States and Canada, this book significantly expands the traditional discourses of photographic history. With incisive contributions by individual curatorial council members, In Our Hands presents Native photography in three thematic sections that underscore the following: Native people are present in all facets of American life; their role is transformative in the larger society; and their view of, and connections to, the land and all living things is holistic and fundamental. The publication features 130 photographic works by Native photographers from the late nineteenth century to the present, ranging from documentary photographs to family snapshots to conceptual works. Illustrated in full color, the photographs in this book offer diverse perspectives spanning geographic, chronological, and artistic experience, and shed new light on the extraordinary contributions of Native, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit artists to the art of the Americas. Alexey Brodovitch
Reassessing the career of the hugely influential Harper's Bazaar art director, who changed the course of twentieth-century American photography and graphic design This lavishly illustrated volume explores the influence and significance of the Russian-born photographer, designer, and instructor Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971), best known for his art directorship of the American fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar between 1934 and 1958, as well as his tutelage of many celebrated documentary and fashion photographers, including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Eve Arnold, and Lillian Bassman. Though disparate in their aesthetic approaches, these figures are unified by their responses to Brodovitch's dictum to "astonish me." The authors address Brodovitch's impact on photography as an artistic medium in the mid-twentieth century and explore how European art and design became the foundation of a new American print culture. Brodovitch's own work will be illuminated through his personal projects--such as the magazine Portfolio and the photographic project Ballet, which depicted performances of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in the United States (whose evolution echoed Brodovitch's own 矇migr矇 condition). Case studies of his transformative collaborations with photographers such as Arnold, Avedon, Penn, Lisette Model, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Hans Namuth, and Andr矇 Kert矇sz reveal pivotal encounters that may surprise even the most ardent photography aficionado. An illustrated chronology offers an important tool for scholars on this influential but often overlooked figure. Catalan Pastis - Catalonian cakes
Catalan Pastis is the third volume in our series World of Cakes. In Luxembourg A Piece of Cake we toured the incredible cake shop world in tiny Luxembourg. The variety far exceeds what you would expect in a country smaller than Rhode Island. The book was an unplanned accident. In Florida Cakes we continued the habit of taking pictures of some of the cakes we purchased. Our life took us to the sunny beaches of Florida for a while. The cake designs in Florida are just incredible. Now back in Europe we had business in Spain and especially in Catalonia, which we enjoyed during a number of months. Again, we took advantage of its uniquely enjoyable cake shops bombonierie making the most wonderful cakes pastis in Catalan - some which are not found elsewhere. There must be at least one thousand cake shops and cafes in Barcelona alone serving these great specialities. We will try to discover some of the secrets behind this formidable variety and quality of Catalan pastis Catalan cakes. You will be surprised! We very much hope you will enjoy the tour and will take the opportunity to visit Spain and Catalonia yourself one day! Many thanks to Concha Marchante of the Servei de Pesca Continental in Barcelona and Professor Emili Garcia-Berthou from the University of Girone for their kind assistance with very interesting information on the fish in the Tordera River.

Going Deeper with Jason George - Moose

Jason's goal with this series is to take you deeper into the animal kingdom with each book focusing on a specific animal and his personal experiences with them. In this book, I will share with you some of my favourite moose encounters. Most encounters I've had with moose are in Algonquin Park Ontario. The word moose is actually the plural because it is a loan word from the Native American languages (Eastern Algonquin and Narragansett). The Algonquin word 'moosu' translates to 'he who strips bark' or 'eater of twig' and is where we get the word moose from. The male moose is called a bull, a female is a cow, and the baby is a calf or yearling. Check on YouTube for some awesome Moose videos.

All the Colors I Am Inside
Achak's dreamlike landscapes and mysterious portraits bring together human and spiritual worlds. In All the Colors I Am Inside, Deb Achak reflects on our relationship with the soft, quiet voice of our intuition and the beauty of who we are under the surface. Achak explores how our inner voice leads us on the most surprising and glorious adventures, but to hear it, we must quiet our brains and savor the present moment. Bringing together human and spiritual worlds, she uses landscapes that are rich and mysterious, the way our dreams and meditations might feel, and portraits in which the subject is consumed by nature, swept up by it. Achak seeks to represent the pictorial quality of intuition using imagery that walks the line between rare and familiar. Ultimately, the work invites us to think less, feel more. Deb Achak is an American artist. All the Colors I Am Inside marks the artist's debut monograph.
Finding American
A captivating photographic portrait of the diverse experiences of immigrants in the United States, depicting the resilience and realities of building a home in a new place. Disturbed by the increasingly hostile views of immigrants that arose in the United States during the 2016 presidential election, photographer Colin Boyd Shafer set out on a road trip to meet hundreds of families and individuals with roots abroad who now live in America. The result, after a year of travel covering fifty thousand miles, is this collection of striking photos and moving stories that form a portrait of the nation's complex and shifting relationship to immigration. Some of the participants chose to make America home; others were displaced by crises. Some were warmly welcomed and granted citizenship; others battled the immigration system for years and still live with fear and uncertainty. Their circumstances and origins vary, but all are united by a willingness to share their stories--of harrowing journeys, intense love, separated families, passionate activism--in hopes of adding nuance and depth to a vital issue that continues to polarize Americans.
Northern India
Kashmir is in the Northwestern region of India. It's an area with rich fertile agricultural valleys and snow-clad mountains. Kashmir borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The locations for my photos in Kashmir were Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Martand. I have seen many changes from 1973 to 2012. In 1973 it was a quiet peaceful area with rich agricultural fields and small villages. As the population grew the people began building houses and shops along the roadsides and have encroached on the agricultural areas. On my last trip there I saw many large houses that were at least 5,000 square feet, so there is a lot wealth in the area. The Lehi/Ladakh area is now known as the Leh District and is unlike any other part of India. It's a Buddhist area and has many monasteries throughout the area. The largest is the Hemis Monastery. The Hemis festival takes place in June/July and is dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche.) The monks ware colorful costumes, masks and dance to music played by musicians to traditional Tibetan music with four pairs of cymbals, large pan drums, 5 small trumpets and large size wind instruments. Leh is 11,500 ft / 3524 m above sea level and you must give yourself a few extra days to acclimatize before you climb the steps to the monasteries. It's my recommendation to start your journey in Srinagar as its 6,600 feet above sea level. Stay there for three nights then drive to Leh with an overnight stop along the way. Rest for one day in Leh then drive to the Nubra Valley. You will pass over Khardung La pass at 18, 380 ft / 5606 m then to the Nubra valley. The Diskit and Samtenling monasteries are the main ones to see. When you return to Leh you should be acclimatized to visit the Leh Palace & Monastery, Thiksey, Shey, Thesey and Hemis Monasteries. I highly recommend The Hotel Royal in Leh. The Nubra Valley is about 93 miles (150 km) north of Leh, India. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. / 3048 meters above sea level. Like the rest of Ladakh the Nubra valley is a high desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds, and on high slopes. The villages are irrigated and very fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard, for oil and a variety of fruits. Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Ladakhis who speak Ladakhi; the majority of them are Buddhist. Nagakot is a village about 32 km east of Katmandu, Nepal in the Bhaktapur District. The elevation is 2,195 meters, it is considered one of the most scenic spots in the Bhaktapur District. Its renowned for its sunrise views of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest as well as other snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan range of Eastern Nepal. Darjeeling is a city in the Indian State of West Bengal and was a part of Nepal until the British took it from Nepal under their rule in India. It's internationally known as a tourist area with beautiful tea plantations and monasteries in the area. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad connects Darjeeling (6,812 ft. / 2011 meters) with Siliguri (600 ft. / 183 meters) it has 919 curves, 556 bridges, 3 loops and 5 Z sections. I did a trek from Darjeeling to Kalimpong, it's a great way to meet local people and visit the tea plantations. My trek took me to the Peshok Tea Plantation and the Bhutia Busty Monastery along the way to Kalimpong. I highly recommend hiring a guide which will help you navigate the trails.
The Creation of Place or Gardens of Sesshu 創造される場所または雪舟の庭園
During the Muromachi period (15th century) in Japan, the painter-monk Sesshu Toyo left behind over fifty authentic works, including six national treasures. Not only in painting, but also in garden design, he created magnificent and elegant gardens. However, there is no supporting evidence specifically attributing these gardens to Sesshu. Nevertheless, even if the authenticity remains uncertain, or if time has altered the form of the gardens, perhaps what is more important is not their authenticity (being real) but their vitality (being alive). Yet, in the face of these vast and awe-inspiring spaces, we may be perplexed about what we should find within them, as we do not share the spatial style of the Muromachi period. It is said that Zen gardens conceal one essential point that is not explicitly revealed. However, in Sesshu's gardens, it seems that multiple perspectives are intentionally arranged. By abandoning the notion of a single viewpoint and embracing a multifaceted approach, the complete panorama of Sesshu's garden, which draws viewers into the space, begins to emerge.

Building a White Nation
Throughout the apartheid era South Africa maintained a wide-reaching propaganda apparatus. At its core was the information service that strongly capitalised on photography to visually articulate the minority regime's racist political messages, promote Afrikaner nationalism, and consolidate white rule. By unearthing a substantial corpus of photographs that so far have been hidden in archives, this book offers a distinctive perspective on the institutional context of the regime's photographic production and how it was tightly linked to the objective to build a white nation. Through scrutiny of the photographic material's iconographies, its circulation in printed matters, and a comparison with works by photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White, Ernest Cole and David Goldblatt, readers gain fresh insight into the country's visual culture of the period. Based on the ambiguity of photographs, the monograph challenges the alleged dichotomy between so-called pro- and anti-apartheid photography, highlighting how the regime was able to position photographs in the grey area of inconspicuousness.By blending photo theory and art historical analysis with historical studies, Building a White Nation will appeal to scholars and postgraduate students in cultural studies interested in photo history and theory, visual culture and art history, African studies, South African photography, Afrikaner nationalism, propaganda studies, postcolonial studies, and archive theory.Free ebook available at OAPEN Library, JSTOR, Project Muse, and Open Research Library
The Long Ride Home
"Ron Tarver was one of the earliest photographers to dedicate himself to documenting the lives of Black cowboys, which he has done for thirty years... The Long Ride Home celebrates the heritage and the enduring resilience of these Black cowboys..." Elizabeth Cheng Krist, Senior Photo Editor, National Geographic MagazineFinalist for Foreword INDIES Book of the Year and for Best Coffee Table BookThe Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America is among the first books to tell the story of the Black cowboy experience in contemporary America. Although Black cowboys have been a fixture on the American landscape since the nineteenth century, few people are aware of their enduring contributions to the history of the West and how their unique culture continues to thrive in urban as well as rural areas all over the country. The book features Ron Tarver's beautiful, compelling, and often surprising contemporary images of African-American cowboys that not only convey the Black cowboy's way of life and its rich heritage, but also affirm a thriving culture of Black-owned ranches and rodeo operations, parades, inner-city cowboys, retired cowhands, and Black cowgirls of all ages, too. Tarver, who comes from a family of Black cowboys in Oklahoma, uses his artistry to question, if not upend, long-held notions of what it means to be a cowboy and, with that, what it means to be an American. The Long Ride Home couldn't be more timely, coming on the heels of Beyonce's hit album, Cowboy Carter (2024), and films such as Lil Nas X's hit time-travel Western, Old Town Road (2019), and Idris Elba's Concrete Cowboy (2021). The latter was based on Greg Neri's book, Ghetto Cowboy (2013), about Philadelphia's contemporary African-American cowboy culture. Many of Tarver's images were made in some of the same Philadelphia neighborhoods. In addition to Tarver's photographs, The Long Ride Home includes an essay by Art T. Burton, an expert on the history of Black cowboys. This book is both a tribute to and a celebration of the Black cowboy in America, providing an invaluable and unique perspective on American history and culture as well as the Black experience in America.
