American National Guard
The first muster of militia forces in what is today the United States took place on September 16, 1565, in the newly established Spanish military town of St. Augustine. The militia men were assigned to guard the expedition's supplies while their leader, Pedro Men矇ndez de Avil矇s, took the regular troops north to attack the French settlement at Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River. The majority of the National Guard is a state based militia under the control of the governor. National Guard soldiers and airmen hold a civilian job full-time while serving part-time as a National Guard member. We honor the National Guard on 4th of July and Memorial Day and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
Kelli Connell: Pictures for Charis
Pictures for Charis offers a groundbreaking new work by artist Kelli Connell, synthesizing text and image, while raising vital questions about photography, gender, and portraiture in the twenty-first century. Pictures for Charis is a project driven by photographer Kelli Connell's obsession with the writer Charis Wilson, Edward Weston's partner, model, and collaborator during one of the most productive segments of his historic career. Connell focuses on Wilson and Weston's shared legacy, traveling with her own partner, Betsy Odom, to locales where the latter couple made photographs together more than eighty years ago. Wilson wrote extensively about her travels and about her, and Weston's, photographic concerns. In chasing Charis Wilson's ghost, Connell tells her own story, one that finds a kinship with Wilson and, to her surprise, Weston, too, as she navigates her own life and struggles as an artist against a cultural landscape that has changed and yet remains mired in the many of the same thorny issues regarding the nature of desire and inspiration, and the relationship of artist and landscape. The Uncanny
The Uncanny is a personal visual exploration of the Democratic Republic of Congo by Belgian photographer L矇onard Pongo. Collaborating with friends and family in the country, Pongo became immersed in their vision. He let them decide what he should witness as he attempted to understand the region, reconnect with his heritage and reconcile his preconceptions with realities.In 2011, Pongo travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to photograph the country's general election and its impact on society. He soon became aware that, as a European educated photographer he could neither define which stories mattered nor were they his to tell. As his awareness of this increased, he came to terms with the limits of photography to show 'the truth' as well as his own limitations in accessing and understanding the environment, bias, and stereotypes. The project evolved into the photographs which form his first book The Uncanny.

His sceneries seem filled with perfectly composed calm, but at the same time with an explosive power that must detonate in the next second. E Pluribus Unum
The book is the result of Axle Contemporary's mobile portrait project which took place in Northern New Mexico in August, September, and October, 2022. The book contains 1300 photographic portraits, images of the project in action, essays by the artists and a poem by Taos Poet Laureate Joshua Concha. The Axle Contemporary free portrait studio was open to all people, in the communities of Los Alamos, Espanola, Chimayo, Pojoaque, Ohkay Owingeh, Truchas, Pe簽asco, Dixon, Taos, El Prado, Questa, Costilla (Garcia CO), Raton, Watrous, Clayton, Roy, Mosquero, Tucumcari, Las Vegas, Mora, Abiquiu, and Chama. Each participant held a small personal object in their portrait. Photos were immediately printed in the mobile studio --one given to the participant and one pasted to the exterior of the mobile studio-gallery. The cover is a blend off all the portraits.

Wonderland
Wonderland is a unique coffee table book that takes the reader into the fascinating world of mushrooms. Dutch photographer Jan Vermeer took on this incomparable project after being fascinated by the beauty of two fly agaric in his own garden. Equipped with his camera, he enthusiastically set off on a mushroom hunt and was rewarded with pictures in intoxicating colors and shapes of the most extraordinary and sometimes very rare specimens. He has now compiled the most beautiful shots in his photo book Wonderland. Vermeer took all the pictures for Wonderland in his home country, the Netherlands, so the book is not only an artistic work of microphotography, but also an important document and archive of nature and the forest in its present state. In short but informative texts, the author describes the wealth of forms of his plant photographic models, their usefulness in medicine, but also the dangers posed by fungi. He explains the symbiosis between fungi and trees and devotes special attention to slime moulds. Police cars are usually very visible in our society, advertising the important role of police and loved by children. The role of the police is to enforce the law, to ensure the safety, health, and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder. Law enforcement is as old as human society and the giving of laws itself. In ancient China, Babylon and Egypt there were special law enforcement bodies. Law enforcement is a part of the political process. Not all laws are fair, not all politicians are honest and the job can be risky. We honor all good police on this 4th of July 2023 and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
The Trinity River
It is humble. Unassuming. Everyday and ordinary to millions of Texans. Yet, the complex network of twisted tributaries that is the Trinity River thunders, ambles, even crawls over 550 miles of Texas landscape and has shaped the destinies of Native Americans, outlaws, outcasts, dreamers, desperadoes, millionaires, military men, and many others over thousands of years. Luther Smith's series of more than fifty photographs taken over seven years of various stages and locations on the Trinity captures the river's many personalities: the meandering West Fork in Archer County, the pollution-littered shore where the West Fork runs through Fort Worth, the flooding which occasionally spills into cities and over highways. Mike Nichols' essay on the river provides an insightful and nostalgic look into the Trinity's shaping and being shaped by generations of Texans. Thomas W. Southall's essay, "Reflections on a River's Convergence," discusses landscape photography and, more specifically, the photography of Smith. Though Smith is active in efforts to preserve the natural environment, this series is both a call to environmental consciousness and a reminder of the quiet, humble wilderness that still exists but is often unseen. His photographs embody the natural simplicity of often unnoticed parts of the Texas landscape. Each photograph is a mood, a face of the time-shaping river. And each is its own story.

Mistaken Memories
Visual dialogue between the artist and her memories of her fatherFollowing the death of her father in 2014, photographer Dalia Johananoff Kenneth (b. 1960 in Israel) discovered a forgotten treasure of tens of thousands prints shot by him in the 1950's and 1960's, and self-developed in a tiny space turned into a darkroom at home. While sieving and scanning through his prints, she found photographic language sometimes incredibly compatible, other times foreign but always resonating within. The images, whether hers or her father's, enable and compel her to revisit their relationship, and her identity as a woman and an artist. This issue, we amplified the voices of young creators who reflect on their adolescence and feelings of nostalgia, and let the theme serve as a reminder of the conditions and support needed by underprivileged children.

It has been suggested that up to 10% of Australian bird species may go extinct by the year 2100 as a result of climate change. Many of them have specific beauty, character and habitat. Australia is the home of the best views in the world. The remarkable country road, conservation parks, cliffs, rocks, deserts, farm lands and many more. Hiking/Walking and Bird Watch is closely related. Hiking brings me joy.
Cindy Sherman: 2023
New experiments in digital self-portraiture from the endlessly inventive Pictures Generation pioneerThis publication presents a new body of work by Cindy Sherman that continues her explorations of the genre of portraiture going back to her early work of the 1970s. Across 36 photographs, the artist collages parts of her own face to construct the identities of various sitters, using digital manipulation to accent the layered aspects and plasticity of the self. The book also includes a text by Sherman chronicling her process in the studio, offering an intimate glimpse into her thinking about the work.Cindy Sherman (born 1954) came to prominence in the late 1970s with the Pictures Generation group alongside artists such as Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Louise Lawler. Sherman studied art at Buffalo State College in 1972 where she soon turned her attention to photography. In 1977, shortly after moving to New York, Sherman began her critically acclaimed Untitled Film Stills. By the mid to late 1980s her visual language began to explore the more grotesque aspects of humanity through the lens of horror and the abject, as seen in works such as Fairy Tales (1985) and Disasters (1986-89). Since the early 2000s, Sherman has used digital technology to further manipulate her roster of characters. In 2017, she began using Instagram to upload portraits that utilize a number of face-tuning apps, morphing the artist into a plethora of protagonists in kaleidoscopic settings. Sherman lives and works in New York, and is represented by Hauser & Wirth.

The resulting works fuse his own aesthetic ideas with the 罈voice竄 of the people he so intimately engages.This publication accompanying the upcoming retrospective at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University will give a comprehensive presentation of Wolin's work, and is his third book with Kehrer.
American Ambulances
Like firemen paramedics are some of the most celebrated everyday heroes we have! The history of ambulances goes way back but the Spanish used them to carry wounded already in 1487 during the Siege of M獺laga, part of the Reconquista. The U.S. Army started using ambulances in 1865 and soon after major cities like Cincinnati and New York City began using harse drawn civilian ambulances. Today, rescue vehicles are technologically highly developed with specialized equipment and specially trained paramedics to keep people alive until they can get care at a hospital. Fire engines are some of the most beautiful vehicles of them all! They have developed from horse drawn steam powered pumps to flashy chrome, colors, lights and sirens. Fire trucks are all about public service. They come to help you if your house is on fire or an accident has happened. The understanding is that anything 50 to 100 years old is vintage and anything 100 years old or older is considered an antique and our selection is not always precise. This unique collection brings together the work of photography writer, curator, and lecturer, Liz Wells, reflecting on key themes of landscape, place, nationhood, and environmental concerns.
