Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs 1942-2018
On a winter's night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens on his new feline friend--which he named Loco--and was so inspired by the results that he started photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the start of an extraordinary career that would span seven decades. Long before the Internet and #catsofinstagram, Chandoha was enrapturing the public with his fuzzy subjects. From advertisements to greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles to pet-food packaging, his images combined a genuine affection for the creatures, a strong work ethic, and flawless technique. Chandoha's trademark glamorous lighting, which made each cat's fur stand out in sharp relief, would define the visual vocabulary of animal portraiture for generations and inspire such masters as Andy Warhol, who took cues from Chandoha's charming portraits in his illustrated cat book. Cats leaps into the archives of this genre-defining artist, spanning color studio and environmental portraits, black-and-white street photography, images from vintage cat shows, tender pictures that combine his children with cats and more. This is a fitting tribute not just to these beguiling creatures but also to a remarkable photographer who passed away in 2019 at the age of 98; and whose compassion can be felt in each and every frame.
Friends of Wine
Have you ever wondered about the people who make the wines you love? This book is about my journey into wine, which came almost by accident. Starting out in radio and music, I met many legendary rock photographers who inspired me to start taking pictures. I never thought I could do the same for wine. It became my mission to photograph these passionate and charismatic people who made wine. They live well, eat well, and drink well. Their commitment and dedication extends beyond business. It's a crossover between art and life. Enjoy my journey of over 28 years photographing some of the greatest wine makers, their families, associates, and a feisty dog named Tito. Friends of Wine: In Vino Veritas represents my personal collection of photographs taken through the years of people in and associated with the international wine business. Thank you to all who have supported my effort to get this book produced. Mille grazie! For those of you I missed, you'll be in my next book. - In Vino Veritas, MB Michael J. Called to the Camera
A timely reconsideration of the history of photography that places Black studio photographers, and their subjects, at the center From photography's beginnings in the United States, Black studio photographers operated on the developing edge of popular media to produce affirming portraits for their clients, as well as a wide range of photographic work rooted in their communities. Called to the Camera offers a comprehensive history of this work, from the nineteenth-century daguerreotypes of James Presley Ball to the height of Black studios in the mid-twentieth century, and considers contemporary photographers responding to Black studio traditions today. In addition to showcasing famous photographers such as Ball, James Van Der Zee, and Addison Scurlock, this volume brings attention to dozens of other artists across the country, including Florestine Perrault Collins, Austin Hansen, and Henry Clay Anderson. The book features more than one hundred extraordinary vintage photographs, many of them unique objects and some, like those by the Hooks Brothers Studio, published here for the first time. Highlighting Black subjects on both sides of the camera, Called to the Camera presents a broader and more inclusive history of photography. Walk with Me: New York
From photographer Susan Kaufman, Walk With Me: New York is an intimate celebration of the beauty and charm of New York City through more than 200 color images. For some people, New York City exists only in their imaginations, a big-screen beacon of wonder and 24/7 delight. This book offers a glimpse of life in Japan during one of its most dramatic periods in history." --Shutterbug Magazine "The extensive collection of valuable photographs in this book and its text might be described as a visual record of our native land during that period, a record that has been lost to us since so many early photographs left Japan." --Message announcing Photography in Japan: 1853-1912 as the Winner of the 2007 International Award of the Photographic Society of Japan This book presents a fascinating visual record of Japan and Japanese culture during its metamorphosis from a feudal society to a modern industrial nation--at a time when the art of photography was still in its infancy. White Shadows: Anneliese Hager and the Camera-Less Photograph
An unprecedented delve into the dazzling, inventive and long-overlooked Surrealist photograms and poetry of Anneliese HagerThis publication introduces the untold story of German artist and poet Anneliese Hager. Active from the 1930s to the 1960s, Hager began her photographic experimentation in Germany during the Nazi censure of modern art. Her preferred medium was the cameraless photograph, or photogram--an image made by placing objects directly on (or in close proximity to) a light-sensitive surface and exposing the assembled material to light. In its final form, a photogram is a one-of-a-kind work that reverses light and dark: the longer the paper is covered, and hence unexposed, the brighter the covered parts will be, and vice versa. Hager called these bright areas "white shadows."Hager's photograms offer a more inclusive history of the medium, synthesizing the technique's 20th-century avant-garde trajectory (best known in the work of L獺szl籀 Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray) and its 19th-century prehistories in the realm of science and in practices such as the making of silhouettes, collage and textile arts--pursuits often coded feminine. In 1945, all Hager's existing artwork was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden during World War II. This book offers an unprecedented reconstruction of her development and postwar creation of otherworldly, Surrealist visions in photograms and poems, a selection of which appear here in English for the first time. For Hager, the photogram was significant for its provocative tonal inversions and surprising chance effects, but also for what emerges from the dark.Anneliese Hager (1904-97) was a German Surrealist poet, translator and photo artist. She began making photographs in Berlin in the 1920s, and from 1935 began to experiment with photograms. Hager also made the first German translations of French authors such as Apollinaire, Breton, Char, Jarry, Lautr矇amont and Yourcenar.
Uta Barth
This retrospective of the photographer Uta Barth traces her use of the camera to explore both how and what we see. Los Angeles-based contemporary artist Uta Barth (b. 1958) has spent her decades-long career exploring the complexities and limits of human and mechanical vision. At first, her photographs appear to be deceptively simple depictions of everyday objects--light filtering through a window, tree branches bereft of leaves, a sparsely appointed domestic interior--but these images, visually spare yet conceptually rigorous, emerge from her investigation of sight, perception, light, and time. In this richly illustrated monograph, curator Arpad Kovacs and contributors Lucy Gallun and Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe chart Barth's career path and discuss her most significant series, revealing how she has rejected the primacy of a traditional photographic subject and instead called attention to what is on the periphery. The book includes previously unpublished bodies of work made early in her career that add much to our understanding of this important artist. Also included is Barth's most recent work, ...from dawn to dusk, an ambitious commission marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Getty Center.
Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine
A new, comprehensive survey of Sugimoto's five-decade career, from grand dioramas and seascapes to eerie portraits of wax effigies and moreThrough his expansive exploration of the possibilities of still images, Hiroshi Sugimoto has created some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time--pictures that are meticulously crafted and deeply thought-provoking, familiar yet tantalizingly ambiguous. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine is a comprehensive survey of work produced over the past five decades, featuring selections from all of Sugimoto's major series, as well as lesser-known works that illuminate his innovative, conceptually driven approach to making pictures.Texts by international writers, artists and scholars?including Geoffrey Batchen, Edmund de Waal, Mami Kataoka, Ralph Rugoff, Lara Strongman and Margaret Wertheim?highlight his work's philosophical yet playful inquiry into the nature of representation and art, our understanding of time and memory, and the paradoxical character of photography as a medium so well suited to both documenting and invention.Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948) has exhibited extensively in major museums and galleries throughout the world, and his work is held in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; National Gallery, London; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Smithsonian, Washington, DC; and Tate, London, among others. Sugimoto divides his time between Tokyo and New York City.
Eric Hart Jr.: When I Think about Power
Sumptuous and tender portraits of an empowered Black queer experienceEric Hart Jr.'s black-and-white photo series presents more than 70 portraits focusing on the notion of power as it relates to the Black queer experience. Begun in 2019, When I Think About Power investigates and expands the contemporary reimagining of men through themed chapters. "I'm fascinated with the intersectionality and the layers of what it means to be Black in the modern day," he has said. "From masculinity, queerness, to dress, I strive to utilize image-making in a way that displays people like myself in all of their power and all of their beauty." Hart's approach stems from his own journey toward self-acceptance growing up in Macon, Georgia. By visually exploring the differences and similarities between himself and the men who surround him, studying the words of Black queer icons and researching the visibility of power in eras such as the Ming dynasty or ancient Egypt, Hart has created an iconography of a power that so many queer individuals seek. The work of Brooklyn-based photographer Eric Hart Jr. (born 1999) has been published in Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, the New York Times and i-D magazine, and has been praised by artists such as Beyonc矇 and Spike Lee. Hart is a two-time Gordon Parks scholar, a 2022 Forbes 30 under 30 Art & Style choice, and in 2020 was named one of Men's Health magazine's "20-year-old mavericks changing America."
Treasured Memories
Dear Reader: I am the oldest of four girls and the co-author of this book, Ella Cosby, is the next oldest. Because we are only two years apart in age, we were very close growing up and spent a lot of time together. I noticed that Ella enjoyed drawing and exploring the great outdoors, always looking for an adventure or something to draw. When we were growing up, I always knew that my sister was artistically inclined. She loved to draw and eventually began painting. She was very good, even at a young age. She enjoyed painting pictures of people mostly, as they related to her heritage and her experience as a child growing up with three sisters Eventually, Ella began taking pictures with a disposable camera. She enjoyed that very much and soon purchased a better camera. She would take pictures of just about anything and anybody. It became her passion to capture people, places and things on camera. When the cell phone was discovered, she began taking pictures with her phone. Sometimes she would have both camera and phone taking pictures. Every day I see people doing great things, and it gives me great pleasure to write this forward for one of those persons. I have observed how much Ella loves taking pictures; it has become her passion. This book shows how much she enjoys it and how good she is at it. Ella and Vivian grew up in rural Pittsylvania County, Virginia, with two younger sisters and one brother. Their parents were hard workers who did what they needed to do in order to take care of their family. Vivian was the most studious child and Ella was more of a tomboy who enjoyed nature. At an early age, Ella began taking pictures, while Vivian enjoyed reading and writing. Bothe of the sisters still live in Pittsylvania County very close to one another and their two sisters. They enjoy making people happy and serving others in different capacities. At an early age, they were taught by their mother how to cook, clean, sew and how to become self-sufficient. They have walked in their late mother's shies and become true missionaries in their community. Ella has one sone who lives in Florida. Vivian is the proud mother of one son, a daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren who live in Florida.

Spin Club Stories
Astrid Reischwitz follows a path through the lives of her ancestors, their layout of a perfect pattern and the mistakes they made.In Spin Club Stories, Astrid Reischwitz explores personal and cultural memory influenced by her upbringing in a small farming village in Northern Germany. She uses keepsakes from family life, old photographs and embroidered fabric from the village to build a world of memory, identity and home. The Boston based artist takes cues from the old tradition of spin clubs in her village, where village women met to spin wool and create needlework--and share stories while they worked. She transforms this tradition of storytelling into a visual journey. Her own embroidered designs are partial representations of her ancestral linens, emphasizing the fragmentary nature of recollection. Race and Vision in the Nineteenth-Century United States
Race and Vision in the Nineteenth-Century United States is a collection of twelve essays by cultural critics that exposes how fraught relations of identity and race appear through imaging technologies in architecture, scientific discourse, sculpture, photography, painting, music, theater, and, finally, the twenty-first century visual commentary of Kara Walker. Throughout these essays, the racial practices of the nineteenth century are juxtaposed with literary practices involving some of the most prominent writers about race and identity, such as Herman Melville and Harriet Beecher Stowe, as well as the technologies of performance including theater and music. Recent work in critical theories of vision, technology, and the production of ideas about racial discourse has emphasized the inextricability of photography with notions of race and American identity. The collected essays provide a vivid sense of how imagery about race appears in the formative period of the nineteenth-century United States.

France, Reflections and Realities
London-born Marion Kaplan is, first of all, a photojournalist. So her new book on France, where she has lived for 25 years, France - Reflections and Realities, includes more than 200 photos. They range from ducks beside her rural pond to a maker of quality Armagnac, to Le Corbusier's renowned Ronchamp chapel, to the ravishing Corsica coast, to gorgeous ch璽teaux and glorious churches, dedicated cheesemakers, stunning landscapes and views from Biarritz to Bretagne. For much of her career she was based in Africa, working as freelance for a wide range of magazines and newspapers that included National Geographic, Time and People in the United States, The Observer and The Times in London. She photographed Idi Amin and Jomo Kenyatta, mercenaries in the Congo and wildlife across the continent. Her favourite story: a voyage she made for National Geographic aboard an Arab dhow, one of the last to follow ancient trading routes in the Indian Ocean. She related her Africa experiences in Focus Africa, a book on the independence era. When she moved to Portugal, stories she worked on there led to her book The Portuguese: The Land and Its People. The dhow voyage story is retold in So Old a Ship. In France, she finally began to slow down. Although no longer chasing news, she delighted in the topics that came her way. She met the Louvre curator who had saved the Mona Lisa from Nazi looting, leading chefs and winemakers, conservationists dedicated to vultures and to tiny tortoises, scientists in the Camargue. Travel assignments took her along the Loire, across the Auvergne, up into the Jura and deep into France profonde. Now, all the highlights of Marion Kaplan's French life, along with thought-provoking comment, are gathered into France - Reflections and Realities. It's colourful, it's lively, it's a refreshing new look at a country which millions of travellers know and love. Or, just occasionally, love to hate.
Exmoor Tales - Spring
Exmoor Tales is a circular series of four books. You can start anywhere and read through them all or just dip into them from time to time for a flavour of life on Exmoor.Ellie Keepers began this collection of detailed journal entries as a gift for her grandchildren, but we firmly believe they deserve to be shared to a wider audience, along with her stunning photographs of the landscape and wildlife to be found right on her doorstep. In this book, Ellie explores family history in Dulverton, listens to noisy nature, watches and listens for the first cuckoos, wanders from Simonsbath to Cow Castle and shows us the moor in early evening. This book is perfect to enjoy while waiting for spring showers to pass.
Places
The Revolta de les Germanies was a popular revolt that took place in Mallorca in the early sixteenth century and became a revolution that pitted artisans, workers and peasants against the highest echelons of feudal society, mainly because of the corruption, exploitation and unfair taxation that existed at the time. There are surprising similarities between sixteenth-century Mallorca and current situations and realities, which piqued my interest in the subject and has given me the opportunity to present and explain the places where the events occurred and which today have very different meanings.
Rodney Smith
Elegant, charming, and stunningly beautiful, Rodney Smith's fashion photography is a delightful revelation. "I would hope that I am one of a kind." --Rodney Smith Mystery and manners, romance and fun--the sophisticated compositions and stylish characters in the extraordinary pictures of fashion photographer Rodney Smith (1947-2016) exist in a timeless world of his imagination. Born in New York City, Smith started out as a photo-essayist, turned to portrait photography, and found his niche, and greatest success, in fashion photography. Inspired by W. Eugene Smith, taught by Walker Evans, and devoted to the techniques of Ansel Adams, Smith was driven by the dual ideals of technical mastery and pure beauty. This lavish volume features nearly two hundred reproductions of Smith's images--many that have never before been published--and weaves together a biocritical essay by Getty Museum curator Paul Martineau and a technical assessment of Smith's production by the Center for Creative Photography's chief curator, Rebecca A. Senf. It maps Smith's creative trajectory--including his introduction to photography, early personal projects, teaching, commissioned pieces, and career in fashion--and provides insight into his personal life and character, contextualizing his work and creative tendencies within his privileged but lonely upbringing and complex emotional and psychological makeup. Rodney Smith is the definitive record of the life's work and worldview of a truly original artist.
Love from Manenberg
A moving portrait of the people in Manenberg, South AfricaLove from Manenberg looks at life in Manenberg, South Africa, in particular the experiences of women and their children. The work makes room for complex narratives pushed aside by the media and shows the ways families look to the future and carry the joy, grief, and everyday realities of life in a community plagued by gang violence. Through fortitude and faith, they persevere and prosper. Sarah Stacke first photographed Manenberg, a neighborhood of Cape Town, in June 2011. For over a decade, the women of the Lottering, Pietersen, and Adams families have shared their lives, showing the texture, unity, and comfort of their home. The title of the book reflects the love these women embody, but also describes the relationships the photographer has formed with them. They have become a part of the fabric of each other's lives.

John T. Hill: Random Access
Hill's portrait of postwar America and Europe, spanning 70 yearsThis volume compiles over seven decades of work by American photographer John T. Hill (born 1934), showing the remarkable scope and empathy of his vision. From a street scene in S瓊o Paulo in 1958 to the interior of a Queens taxi in 1970, from John F. Kennedy at the podium of a 1960 rally to punks in Trafalgar Square, from Walker Evans' home to recent landscapes and still lifes, his work is democratic, curious, all-embracing. Hill celebrates the contradictions and imperfections of his subjects, engages but never sentimentalizes and is careful not to impose a singular interpretation on the viewer. Here is none of the self-congratulation of "Look at what only I can see," but, rather, an open invitation for the viewer of "This is what you are also capable of seeing."
Missouri's Wild Horses and the Land They Roam
Traipsing along the river bottoms of the Current River over and around the log drifts to follow the herd (about twelve) Missouri wild horses (especially the Little Shawnee Creek and the Rocky Creek herds) with most of my time about evenly spent in Carter County with the Rocky Creek herd (the most spirited herd of the four herds). After many months, over two years, I was able to become more adept at their movements; but still the herds at times were skittish. Most of my photos of the Rocky Creek herd were taken within Carter County near Stegall Mountain, and its indigenous glades ablaze with many varieties of wild flowers, where the Collard lizards, Black bears, Eagles, Hawks, Bobcats, Deer, Elk, Mountain Lions, Wild Pigs, Snakes, and numerous small animals and birds roam near Shannon County's Klepzig Mill where years ago was powered by Rocky Creek on its way to the Current River where the wild horses occasionally drink.
Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing an enormous archive, most of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration within a few blocks of his apartment in lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary places. Celebrated today for his evocative color photographs of New York in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown in their day, Leiter also found success as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar. All the while he was shooting black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks, and nudes and intimate portraits back home, while continuing his painting explorations with abstract watercolors, whimsical sketchbooks, and painted photographs.Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monograph brings together these diverse yet interconnected bodies of work--including much that was previously unpublished--to reveal the complete artist for the first time.

On Line
'On Line' is the second book in the 'On' series. It is part of an ongoing art/photographic project that focuses on a specific aspect as a way of expanding the way in which the world is seen. In this book the focus is images with a straight vertical line. The first book did this around the forms of reflected images and was call 'On Reflection'. The project continues as does the travelling that inspires and enables them.
Northern India
Kashmir is in the Northwestern region of India. It's an area with rich fertile agricultural valleys and snow-clad mountains. Kashmir borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The locations for my photos in Kashmir were Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Martand. I have seen many changes from 1973 to 2012. In 1973 it was a quiet peaceful area with rich agricultural fields and small villages. As the population grew the people began building houses and shops along the roadsides and have encroached on the agricultural areas. On my last trip there I saw many large houses that were at least 5,000 square feet, so there is a lot wealth in the area. The Lehi/Ladakh area is now known as the Leh District and is unlike any other part of India. It's a Buddhist area and has many monasteries throughout the area. The largest is the Hemis Monastery. The Hemis festival takes place in June/July and is dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche.) The monks ware colorful costumes, masks and dance to music played by musicians to traditional Tibetan music with four pairs of cymbals, large pan drums, 5 small trumpets and large size wind instruments. Leh is 11,500 ft / 3524 m above sea level and you must give yourself a few extra days to acclimatize before you climb the steps to the monasteries. It's my recommendation to start your journey in Srinagar as its 6,600 feet above sea level. Stay there for three nights then drive to Leh with an overnight stop along the way. Rest for one day in Leh then drive to the Nubra Valley. You will pass over Khardung La pass at 18, 380 ft / 5606 m then to the Nubra valley. The Diskit and Samtenling monasteries are the main ones to see. When you return to Leh you should be acclimatized to visit the Leh Palace & Monastery, Thiksey, Shey, Thesey and Hemis Monasteries. I highly recommend The Hotel Royal in Leh. The Nubra Valley is about 93 miles (150 km) north of Leh, India. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. / 3048 meters above sea level. Like the rest of Ladakh the Nubra valley is a high desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds, and on high slopes. The villages are irrigated and very fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard, for oil and a variety of fruits. Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Ladakhis who speak Ladakhi; the majority of them are Buddhist. Nagakot is a village about 32 km east of Katmandu, Nepal in the Bhaktapur District. The elevation is 2,195 meters, it is considered one of the most scenic spots in the Bhaktapur District. Its renowned for its sunrise views of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest as well as other snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan range of Eastern Nepal. Darjeeling is a city in the Indian State of West Bengal and was a part of Nepal until the British took it from Nepal under their rule in India. It's internationally known as a tourist area with beautiful tea plantations and monasteries in the area. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad connects Darjeeling (6,812 ft. / 2011 meters) with Siliguri (600 ft. / 183 meters) it has 919 curves, 556 bridges, 3 loops and 5 Z sections. I did a trek from Darjeeling to Kalimpong, it's a great way to meet local people and visit the tea plantations. My trek took me to the Peshok Tea Plantation and the Bhutia Busty Monastery along the way to Kalimpong.I highly recommend hiring a guide which will help you navigate the trails.
