Shasta
Shasta comes from Rwanda in Central Africa, a relatively small, landlocked country. She has strong family ties, and is proud of her origins. It was only by chance that I discovered her sedcard, and immediately found her fascinating. Photographing dark-skinned models in the Alps inevitably produces contrastrictic results, so we end up spending many hours in the mountains during a shoot. Surprisingly, Shasta has exceptionally good hiking equipment, and that motivates her to hike to the top of mountains whose peaks may still be hidden in the clouds. Unfortunately, the temperatures can be extremely fresh up high, but Shasta is brave and always ready to pose, even when the temperature is sometimes under 10 簞C! In addition to modelling, Shasta designs and handmakes clothing in the fabrics, patterns and colours typical of her home country, ingeniously combining traditional African aesthetics with more modern, sensual styles. She doesn't need a model to show off her outfits as she does it all herself with selfies, of which she is the leading proponent! Of course, her experience behind the camera can be quite helpful when we're posing in complicated, demanding settings. She also shows her African roots in her culinary skills, which are of a professional standard. Shasta can cook a range of African dishes over the open fire in the traditional way. You can also book her on a private basis; she supplies all the ingredients and comes to your house to cook and serve the meal. This service also features hand-sewn tablecloths, table mats and serviettes of her own creation! Of course, she also wears her own, traditional African clothes on these occasions. Now, what could make more sense than managing a small holding in order to produce the ingredients required for her cookery? For several years now, she has been cultivating a large field in her hometown, growing herbs and organic vegetables with the help of some other gardeners. The climate in Rwanda can make this very hard work, as often it is either too wet or too dry. Ripe, ready-to-eat vegetables mysteriously tend to disappear from the gardens very quickly, and mostly at night, which means they must be of excellent quality, and definitely taste better than the ones you can get at the supermarket!
Stainless Ladies
Carr(c)'s Photographs are simultaneously totally explicit and totally beautifulThis is a literally breathtaking collection of nude photographs by perfectionist French photo- grapher Didier Carr(c). I had given up hope of finding such images, disappointed by the coyness of nude art photography on the one hand and the wearying over-stimulation of pornography on the other. Carr(c)璽€~s photographs are simultaneously totally explicit and totally beautiful. His models have a stillness that says we taken a great deal of care and time to produce these images: take your own time to explore them. Carr(c) demonstrates the power of black and white photography to reveal the true form of flesh and muscle in light and shade. The models are rarely adorned, apart from, in many cases, one, sometimes two, glas dildos that catch the light like a jewel, focusing your attention on their inner centre 璽€] 璽€" Dermot Cox

Yevonde: Life and Colour
The first comprehensive monograph on the forgotten radical innovator of color photography and mythic, surreal portraitureThe British photographer Yevonde was a businesswoman and tireless creator; as an innovator committed to color photography when it was not considered a serious medium, her work is significant in the history of portrait photography. Yevonde's portraits embody glorified tradition countered with a desire for the new; her most renowned body of work is a series of women dressed as goddesses posed in surreal tableaux from the 1930s. Yevonde championed photography during a time when there were few women photographers working professionally, and this book tells the story of her life, her works and her 60-year career.Yevonde: Life and Colour brings the photographer's works together for the first time in 20 years. With an abundance of reproductions, and featuring previously unpublished works, the book showcases her experimentation with a range of techniques and genres including color photography, portraiture, still lifes, solarization and the Vivex color process, and repositions her as a key modern artist of the 20th century. It also provides in-depth context for Yevonde's images, considering their aesthetic and mythic references.Yevonde (1893-1975), also known as Madame Yevonde, was a London-based photographer of portraits and still lifes whose motto was "be original or die."

New Mexico's Chaco Canyon, Photographing the Ancient City
In Hiking New Mexico's Chaco Canyon, James C. Wilson wrote a guidebook for hiking and camping in Chaco Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwestern New Mexico that the Zu簽i, Hopi, Acoma and other Pueblos consider their ancestral homeland. New Mexico's Chaco Canyon: Photographing the Ancient City is intended to be a guidebook for amateur photographers wanting to photograph the canyon and its spectacular ruins. The volume offers tips on where, when, and sometimes how to photograph the ruins of the ancient stone city that dates from about 860 to 1200 A.D. Wilson takes you on a tour of the Great Houses in the canyon, including Pueblo Bonito and Chetro Ketl (with 650 and 500 rooms respectively). Photographers will discover how images of the massive stone structures vary by angle, light, and time of day. Photographers can experiment with different lenses and camera settings, including manual and automatic, as they explore the smaller Great Houses and Casa Rinconada, the largest excavated Great Kiva in the canyon. Wilson then points out the trails of Chaco's three mesas (North, West, and South Mesa) that connect with Chaco's ancient road system. The various overlooks on the mesa trails provide spectacular views of the ruins and the red sandstone cliffs of the canyon. The colors of the wider landscape--subtle shades of pink, yellow, and gray--make for a landscape photographer's dream.

Family Secrets
Annette Kuhn's work as a theorist of culture has won her a wide reputation for dissecting film and other images in books such as Women's Pictures and The Power of the Image. In Family Secrets, she turns her attention to the deconstruction of pictures closer to home--photographs from her own childhood and images from her shared ethnographic past--to trace a trajectory from personal to collective acts of memory.
Mardi Gras 2021
New Orleans is one of the places on earth where celebration is how the people cope with everything from life to death. Mardi Gras is no exception. The year 2021 found the world in a pandemic. As safety was the most important goal for mankind, the Mayor of New Orleans, along with other officials, made the determination that Mardi Gras would not occur making the season historically somber for the citizens of the city and annual visitors; or so it seemed. The people, as well as, visitors from across the globe, are accustomed to extravagant floats, marching bands, walking bands, dance groups, flambeau carriers, Indian Tribes, formal balls and many others sights that make Mardi Gras the unique event that it is. Mardi Gras is a culture, not just an event for the people of New Orleans. So, without the normal sights of the season, the citizens of the city, in all courage and excitement turned homes, business and mansions into floats in a display of resilience to not allow the culture to die. While every single property could not be captured, this photographic walk is dedicated to the citizens of New Orleans.
Kosti Ruohomaa
Acclaimed photographer Kosti Ruohomaa is widely known for his photographs of hard scrabble Yankees in mid-century Maine. No one was more acutely aware than Ruohomaa that his work was capturing a way of life that was rapidly fading. Before his work in Maine, however, Ruohomaa started out with Disney, then went on to become a freelance photographer for the Black Star Agency, where he was a regular contributor to Life, National Geographic, Look, and Ladies Home Journal. His true passion, however, was documenting the lives of the people of Maine. In this biography by curator Deanna Bonner-Ganter, of the Maine State Museum, Kosti's life and work is made relevant and important to an audience that may be unfamiliar with his work.

Flirting with Danger
A picture should tell a story. It should open doors to a mysterious journey of thought by letting its viewers forget the world around them for a brief moment. David Drebin is known for infusing his photographic masterpieces with compelling narratives. Although each of his works is marked by creative uniqueness, his signature style puts a distinct stamp under each image - a romantic melancholy with a hint of eroticism that elegantly invites you into an exciting fantasy. In his new illustrated book Flirting With Danger, the renowned star photographer now presents particularly sensational moments of this theme. David Drebin creates a dream world in a cinematographic way, which, thanks to his hyper-realistic style, seems so lifelike that the viewer feels part of the scenery. Perhaps it is this twist that makes his artworks so suspenseful, or perhaps it is the way he skilfully stages his protagonists. Each of his pictures leaves the impression of its own dramaturgy, which only stimulates the mental cinema. What will happen next? What happened before? The artist's new coffee-table book is now dedicated to the fascinating attraction of the forbidden and the dangerous. Intense snapshots show approaches to the exciting sides of life. The result is a book in a class of its own. In an extra-large format, the artist's pictures can achieve maximum effect and thus skilfully bring the emotions of the viewers to their peak.
Stephen Wilkes. Day to Night
If you were to stand in one spot at an iconic location for 30 hours and simply observe, never closing your eyes, you still wouldn't be able to take in all the detail and emotion found in a Stephen Wilkes panoramic photograph. Not only does Wilkes shoot over 1,500 exposures from a fixed angle, he also distills this visual information afterward in his studio, painstakingly composing selected frames into a single image.Day to Night presents 60 epic panoramas created between 2009 and 2022, shot everywhere from Africa's Serengeti to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, from the Grand Canyon to Coney Island, from Trafalgar Square to Times Square. Each composition is a labor of love as well as patience. Wilkes waited more than two years to gain permission to photograph Pope Francis celebrating Easter mass in the Vatican, ultimately producing a vivid tableau in which the pontiff appears 10 times. The book also features extraordinary details--works of art in their own right that highlight the stories contained within each image. A bride makes her way through Central Park; in Tanzania, zebras gather around a near-invisible watering hole during a drought; in Rio de Janeiro, surfers come and go while a man holds a sign reading "No more than two questions per customer." "It is exactly these small stories, these details, that draw people into the photographs," says Wilkes. Once discovered, these mini narratives lend each composition a personal, candid feel. This collection takes us on a seamless trip from dawn to dark across the world's most iconic locations, unveiling the unique ebb and flow of man-made and natural landmarks like never before.

Alfredo Boulton
This lavishly illustrated volume examines the work of the Venezuelan photographer and art historian Alfredo Boulton, one of the main intellectuals of Latin American modernity. Alfredo Boulton (1908-1995) is considered one of the most important champions of modern art in Venezuela and a key intellectual of twentieth-century modernism. He was a pioneer of modern photography, an art critic, a researcher and historian of Venezuelan art, a friend to many of the great artists and architects of the twentieth century, and an expert on the imagery of the heroes of his country's independence. Yet, Boulton is shockingly underrecognized outside of his native land. The few exhibitions related to his work have focused exclusively on his photographic production; never has there been a project that looks at the full range of Boulton's efforts, foregrounding his influence on the shaping of Venezuelan art. This volume addresses these lacunae by analyzing Boulton's groundbreaking photographic practice, his central role in the construction of a modern national artistic canon, and his influence in formalizing and developing art history and criticism in Venezuela. Based on the extensive materials held in Boulton's archive at the Getty Research Institute, Alfredo Boulton brings together essays by leading scholars in the field to offer a commanding, original perspective on his contributions to the formation of a distinctive modernity at home and beyond. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center from August 29, 2023, to January 21, 2024.

Flower Pieces
Bas Meeuws' photographs are of an old-fashioned beauty and at the same time radically contemporary. Flower by flower he composes his still lifes, but digitally: the basis for Meeuws' monumental works are digital photographs of individual flowers. They nod to the Dutch masters of the 17th-century with their love of luxury, but also their eye for the ephemeral. Meeuws struck a chord in the art world with his floral still lifes. He is represented by Dutch and Taiwanese galleries and exhibits from Amsterdam to New Delhi.

Unmasked
In March of 2020, feelings of loss, isolation and anxiety overtook us as the world came to a most surreal halt. New York City, one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the world, was now characterized by empty streets, restaurants and retail shops forced to close their doors, and a population that had sheltered in place. To no surprise, the topic of mental health grabbed the spotlight as suicide and depression rates increased exponentially. Although my battle with depression, anxiety and mental health started long before the spring of 2020, the conditions of the pandemic made them flare to levels I had never experienced before. To overcome my isolation and distract my mind, I quickly took my camera to the streets as an excuse to travel to new locations to regain control of my thoughts. I had no expectations or long-term goals with this endeavor other than to document my experience and create lasting memories. With each picture I took, there seemed to be a connection, a strong energy, from the people in the photos. I could feel their pain, their joy, their laughter, their struggles. I began journaling my thoughts about the impact those pictures had on me at that moment. From those impressions, this book - "Unmasked" - was born.UNMASKED, uses powerful imagery, taken throughout the 5 boroughs of New York, coupled with my thoughts presented in a Dr. Suess-like poetic cadence to bring awareness to mental health, equality, self-advocacy, emotional intelligence, and love which is God's highest power of all.UNMASKED, follows the main character "the Self" (the self represents the spirit or subconscious being with in all of us), on its journey from hopelessness to happiness. The Self travels through age, gender, race and a range of emotions and experiences throughout the pages of the book.Hidden among the pages are a couple of metaphorical motifs and thematic elements that bring a deeper meaning to the words on the page and enhance the reader's experience.Motifs: The "MASK" (a playful poke at the COVID-19 pandemic) is a reference to the "mask" we wear to cover our authentic conscious self, to protect our vulnerabilities or to fit in with society. Masks often lie, hiding our true feelings and anxieties. The "INNER CHILD". This inner child is defined as a part of your subconscious that has been receiving and storing messages (mentally and emotionally) since birth. It holds emotions, memories, and beliefs from the past as well as hopes and dreams for the future and are represented through the pictures of children in the book.Thematic Elements: Duality: (shows how obviously opposite or contrary forces may be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the real world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another)o Blackvs.Whiteo Black & White vs. Color o Reality vs. Dreamo Adult vs. Childo Mind vs. Bodyo Smile vs. Frowno Suffering vs. Fulfillment

But what madness would you capture, what beauty, what joy, what fury?" --Jill Lepore

Kristine Potter: Dark Waters
Dark Waters, Kristine Potter's second monograph, continues her engagement with the American landscape as a palimpsest for cultural ideologies. In this dark and brooding series, Potter reflects on the Southern Gothic landscape as evoked in the popular imagination of "murder ballads" from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her seductive, richly detailed black-and-white images channel the setting and characters of these songs, capturing the landscape of the American South, and creating a series of evocative portraits that stand in for the oft-unnamed women at the center of their stories. In the American murder ballad, which has taken on cult appeal and continue to be rerecorded even to this day, the riverscape is frequently the stage of crimes as described in their lyrics. Places like Murder Creek, Bloody Fork, and Deadman's Pond are haunted by both the victim and perpetrator of violence in the world Potter conjures, reflecting the casual and popular glamorization of violence against women that remains prevalent in today's cultural landscape. As Potter notes, "I see a through line of violent exhibitionism from those early murder ballads, to the Wild West shows, to the contemporary landscape of cinema and television. Culturally, we seem to require it." Dark Waters both evokes and exorcises the sense of threat and foreboding that women often grapple with as they move through the world. Author Rebecca Bengal contributes an evocative short story that underscores the sense of anxiety and foreboding that Potter infuses into each of her images; a deliciously compelling, if chilling, combination. Thatcher's Children
Thatcher's Children, a long-term project by photographer Craig Easton, examines the intergenerational nature of poverty as experienced by three generations of the Williams family in the north of England. The passage of time shown in the book demonstrates how deprivation is connected to the social policy failures of successive governments. Thatcher's Children was born out of a series first made in 1992 focusing on two parents and six children living in a hostel for homeless families in Blackpool, England. The project was made in response to a speech by Peter Lilley, then Secretary of State for Social Security, in which he announced his determination to 'close down the something-for-nothing society.' French newspaper Lib矇ration dispatched a journalist to northern England to find out what this society looked like, and Easton was commissioned to take the accompanying photographs.
