Mineriada
Romania in 1990: The brutal attack by hired groups of thuggish miners on the pro-European oppositionMineriada by Anton Roland Laub addresses the division of a society that led Romania into a decade of isolation. The starting point are ten Polaroids taken by his father depicting the havoc in Bucharest in June 1990. The work examines the sites of the events and the unspoken trauma of the physical violence when hired groups of thuggish miners brutally bludgeoned the pro-European opposition. Building on research into legal discourse, Laub raises awareness of recursive events in history in a world that is once again increasingly polarized.Following Mobile Churches (2017) and Last Christmas (of Ceaușescu) (2020), Mineriada is the third part of Anton Roland Laub's Romania trilogy, published by Kehrer Verlag.

The War Is Here: Newark 1967
With a foreword by the Honorable Ras J. Baraka, 40th Mayor of Newark, NJ, The War Is Here is Life magazine photographer Bud Lee's dramatic, empathetic, and still shocking record of the Newark uprising of 1967--a pivotal moment in a summer of protest and rage across the country, whose reverberations we still feel today. July 1967. After the arrest, beating, and imprisonment of cab driver John Smith by local police, the city of Newark--already a tinderbox--became a hotbed of protest and retaliation. Over five long days, 26 people were killed by police gunfire and hundreds more were injured, thousands arrested, and millions of dollars in property damage caused. The scars on the city remained for decades. Bud Lee, a 26-year-old novice photographer for Life magazine, was called upon to cover the civic uprising in Newark as it broke out. Lee and Life reporter Dale Wittner arrived to find a majority Black population--already struggling under a corrupt local government and a vicious, authoritarian police force--trying to persevere in extraordinary circumstances: stores burned and looted; a city under siege by trigger-happy city and state police; and the young, inexperienced, and exhausted National Guardsmen sent to patrol it day and night. The War Is Here documents the several days Bud Lee spent in Newark. These photographs capture life in a city transformed into an urban war zone. Lee witnessed first-hand two policemen shoot a man named Billy Furr in the back. Lee's dramatic images of this cold-blooded murder ran in Life. The same bullets also hit and wounded a 12-year-old boy named Joey Bass Jr., who had been playing at a nearby intersection. Lee's stark, emotional image of Bass, lying bleeding and contorted in pain on dirty concrete, ran on the July 28, 1967 cover of Life, sparking a national conversation on race and police violence and becoming the defining image of the "long, hot summer" of '67--a summer of fire and fury, protest and rage across the country. Over half a century later, Bud Lee's raw, desolate, and empathetic photographs of the people of Newark, at a turning point in the city's history, continue to resonate: a testament to their resilience and fortitude.

France, Reflections and Realities
London-born Marion Kaplan is, first of all, a photojournalist. So her new book on France, where she has lived for 25 years, France - Reflections and Realities, includes more than 200 photos. They range from ducks beside her rural pond to a maker of quality Armagnac, to Le Corbusier's renowned Ronchamp chapel, to the ravishing Corsica coast, to gorgeous ch璽teaux and glorious churches, dedicated cheesemakers, stunning landscapes and views from Biarritz to Bretagne. For much of her career she was based in Africa, working as freelance for a wide range of magazines and newspapers that included National Geographic, Time and People in the United States, The Observer and The Times in London. She photographed Idi Amin and Jomo Kenyatta, mercenaries in the Congo and wildlife across the continent. Her favourite story: a voyage she made for National Geographic aboard an Arab dhow, one of the last to follow ancient trading routes in the Indian Ocean. She related her Africa experiences in Focus Africa, a book on the independence era. When she moved to Portugal, stories she worked on there led to her book The Portuguese: The Land and Its People. The dhow voyage story is retold in So Old a Ship. In France, she finally began to slow down. Although no longer chasing news, she delighted in the topics that came her way. She met the Louvre curator who had saved the Mona Lisa from Nazi looting, leading chefs and winemakers, conservationists dedicated to vultures and to tiny tortoises, scientists in the Camargue. Travel assignments took her along the Loire, across the Auvergne, up into the Jura and deep into France profonde. Now, all the highlights of Marion Kaplan's French life, along with thought-provoking comment, are gathered into France - Reflections and Realities. It's colourful, it's lively, it's a refreshing new look at a country which millions of travellers know and love. Or, just occasionally, love to hate.
Places
The Revolta de les Germanies was a popular revolt that took place in Mallorca in the early sixteenth century and became a revolution that pitted artisans, workers and peasants against the highest echelons of feudal society, mainly because of the corruption, exploitation and unfair taxation that existed at the time. There are surprising similarities between sixteenth-century Mallorca and current situations and realities, which piqued my interest in the subject and has given me the opportunity to present and explain the places where the events occurred and which today have very different meanings.
Rodney Smith
Elegant, charming, and stunningly beautiful, Rodney Smith's fashion photography is a delightful revelation. "I would hope that I am one of a kind." --Rodney Smith Mystery and manners, romance and fun--the sophisticated compositions and stylish characters in the extraordinary pictures of fashion photographer Rodney Smith (1947-2016) exist in a timeless world of his imagination. Born in New York City, Smith started out as a photo-essayist, turned to portrait photography, and found his niche, and greatest success, in fashion photography. Inspired by W. Eugene Smith, taught by Walker Evans, and devoted to the techniques of Ansel Adams, Smith was driven by the dual ideals of technical mastery and pure beauty. This lavish volume features nearly two hundred reproductions of Smith's images--many that have never before been published--and weaves together a biocritical essay by Getty Museum curator Paul Martineau and a technical assessment of Smith's production by the Center for Creative Photography's chief curator, Rebecca A. Senf. It maps Smith's creative trajectory--including his introduction to photography, early personal projects, teaching, commissioned pieces, and career in fashion--and provides insight into his personal life and character, contextualizing his work and creative tendencies within his privileged but lonely upbringing and complex emotional and psychological makeup. Rodney Smith is the definitive record of the life's work and worldview of a truly original artist.
Love from Manenberg
A moving portrait of the people in Manenberg, South AfricaLove from Manenberg looks at life in Manenberg, South Africa, in particular the experiences of women and their children. The work makes room for complex narratives pushed aside by the media and shows the ways families look to the future and carry the joy, grief, and everyday realities of life in a community plagued by gang violence. Through fortitude and faith, they persevere and prosper. Sarah Stacke first photographed Manenberg, a neighborhood of Cape Town, in June 2011. For over a decade, the women of the Lottering, Pietersen, and Adams families have shared their lives, showing the texture, unity, and comfort of their home. The title of the book reflects the love these women embody, but also describes the relationships the photographer has formed with them. They have become a part of the fabric of each other's lives.

John T. Hill: Random Access
Hill's portrait of postwar America and Europe, spanning 70 yearsThis volume compiles over seven decades of work by American photographer John T. Hill (born 1934), showing the remarkable scope and empathy of his vision. From a street scene in S瓊o Paulo in 1958 to the interior of a Queens taxi in 1970, from John F. Kennedy at the podium of a 1960 rally to punks in Trafalgar Square, from Walker Evans' home to recent landscapes and still lifes, his work is democratic, curious, all-embracing. Hill celebrates the contradictions and imperfections of his subjects, engages but never sentimentalizes and is careful not to impose a singular interpretation on the viewer. Here is none of the self-congratulation of "Look at what only I can see," but, rather, an open invitation for the viewer of "This is what you are also capable of seeing."
Missouri's Wild Horses and the Land They Roam
Traipsing along the river bottoms of the Current River over and around the log drifts to follow the herd (about twelve) Missouri wild horses (especially the Little Shawnee Creek and the Rocky Creek herds) with most of my time about evenly spent in Carter County with the Rocky Creek herd (the most spirited herd of the four herds). After many months, over two years, I was able to become more adept at their movements; but still the herds at times were skittish. Most of my photos of the Rocky Creek herd were taken within Carter County near Stegall Mountain, and its indigenous glades ablaze with many varieties of wild flowers, where the Collard lizards, Black bears, Eagles, Hawks, Bobcats, Deer, Elk, Mountain Lions, Wild Pigs, Snakes, and numerous small animals and birds roam near Shannon County's Klepzig Mill where years ago was powered by Rocky Creek on its way to the Current River where the wild horses occasionally drink.

Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing an enormous archive, most of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration within a few blocks of his apartment in lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary places. Celebrated today for his evocative color photographs of New York in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown in their day, Leiter also found success as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar. All the while he was shooting black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks, and nudes and intimate portraits back home, while continuing his painting explorations with abstract watercolors, whimsical sketchbooks, and painted photographs.Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monograph brings together these diverse yet interconnected bodies of work--including much that was previously unpublished--to reveal the complete artist for the first time.
On Line
'On Line' is the second book in the 'On' series. It is part of an ongoing art/photographic project that focuses on a specific aspect as a way of expanding the way in which the world is seen. In this book the focus is images with a straight vertical line. The first book did this around the forms of reflected images and was call 'On Reflection'. The project continues as does the travelling that inspires and enables them.
Northern India
Kashmir is in the Northwestern region of India. It's an area with rich fertile agricultural valleys and snow-clad mountains. Kashmir borders Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The locations for my photos in Kashmir were Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Martand. I have seen many changes from 1973 to 2012. In 1973 it was a quiet peaceful area with rich agricultural fields and small villages. As the population grew the people began building houses and shops along the roadsides and have encroached on the agricultural areas. On my last trip there I saw many large houses that were at least 5,000 square feet, so there is a lot wealth in the area. The Lehi/Ladakh area is now known as the Leh District and is unlike any other part of India. It's a Buddhist area and has many monasteries throughout the area. The largest is the Hemis Monastery. The Hemis festival takes place in June/July and is dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche.) The monks ware colorful costumes, masks and dance to music played by musicians to traditional Tibetan music with four pairs of cymbals, large pan drums, 5 small trumpets and large size wind instruments. Leh is 11,500 ft / 3524 m above sea level and you must give yourself a few extra days to acclimatize before you climb the steps to the monasteries. It's my recommendation to start your journey in Srinagar as its 6,600 feet above sea level. Stay there for three nights then drive to Leh with an overnight stop along the way. Rest for one day in Leh then drive to the Nubra Valley. You will pass over Khardung La pass at 18, 380 ft / 5606 m then to the Nubra valley. The Diskit and Samtenling monasteries are the main ones to see. When you return to Leh you should be acclimatized to visit the Leh Palace & Monastery, Thiksey, Shey, Thesey and Hemis Monasteries. I highly recommend The Hotel Royal in Leh. The Nubra Valley is about 93 miles (150 km) north of Leh, India. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. / 3048 meters above sea level. Like the rest of Ladakh the Nubra valley is a high desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds, and on high slopes. The villages are irrigated and very fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard, for oil and a variety of fruits. Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Ladakhis who speak Ladakhi; the majority of them are Buddhist. Nagakot is a village about 32 km east of Katmandu, Nepal in the Bhaktapur District. The elevation is 2,195 meters, it is considered one of the most scenic spots in the Bhaktapur District. Its renowned for its sunrise views of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest as well as other snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan range of Eastern Nepal. Darjeeling is a city in the Indian State of West Bengal and was a part of Nepal until the British took it from Nepal under their rule in India. It's internationally known as a tourist area with beautiful tea plantations and monasteries in the area. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad connects Darjeeling (6,812 ft. / 2011 meters) with Siliguri (600 ft. / 183 meters) it has 919 curves, 556 bridges, 3 loops and 5 Z sections. I did a trek from Darjeeling to Kalimpong, it's a great way to meet local people and visit the tea plantations. My trek took me to the Peshok Tea Plantation and the Bhutia Busty Monastery along the way to Kalimpong.I highly recommend hiring a guide which will help you navigate the trails.

Rich in symbolism and ripe with vulnerability these images are a collection of internal processing. This selection of photographs illustrates the insidious way narcissistic abuse seeps into every hollow of your life. These are here to validate the experiences with others, like a nod across a crowded room.
Hyperborea
Hyperborea presents unforgettable visual tales of life in the Siberian Arctic that Evgenia Arbugaeva knew when she was growing up in Tiksi, a town on the shore of the Laptev Sea in the Republic of Yakutia. Her work discloses both the fragility and beautiful desolation of the land and those who inhabit it, and her rigorously composed photographs glow with rich otherworldly color, bristle with the raw vibrancy of the climate, and exhibit the quiet intensity of lives borne out in seclusion and extremes. This beautifully produced photobook contains a decade of work, with photographs selected from across the full range of Arbugaeva's series and extensive travels across the Russian Arctic coast to connect with people living in these remote and inhospitable places. The photographs that she brings back from her long-term visits convey a world where everything seems connected: humans and nature, the sky and the land. An elemental space of deep solitude and slower pace of life. Her images invite us to contemplate a territory that has been a place of longing and imagination for many, which is now under existential threat from a multitude of environmental changes. With an introduction by anthropologist Piers Vitebsky, four texts by Arbugaeva to supplement the images, and a specially commissioned map to provide a sense of where Arbugaeva's work is located, Hyperborea is a future collectible for all photobook fans and introduces a global audience to a very special talent in the world of photography.
Cecil Beaton
Cecil Beaton: The Royal Portraits looks back in time to tell a very modern tale: the creation of a public image. Offering a fresh appraisal of Beaton's portraits of the British royal family, the book explores not only the finished images but also the sittings in which they were created, revealing Beaton's central role in shaping the public face of the House of Windsor and the ways in which he collaborated with his subjects.Organized chronologically, from the 1930s to the 1970s, each of the book's four chapters comprises an introductory essay, plates with extended captions, and one or two in-depth analyses of a particular sitting. Throughout, a variety of contextual material--contact sheets, test shots, outtakes, sketches, letters, journals, tear sheets--helps build a detailed picture of Beaton's methods, the relationships he developed with his sitters, and how the portraits were received.Drawing on the Victoria and Albert Museum's unparalleled collection of Beaton's photographs, this volume will appeal not only to those interested in the photographer and his work, but also to anyone for whom the distinction between the private world and the public face of the royal family remains a source of fascination.

Stoner to Seeker
"STONER TO SEEKER: PHOTOGRAPHS OF INDIA" India is the pot of gold at the end of the hippie rainbow Here you can lose or find yourself. You have absolute freedom: you can be transformed into a new spiritual being or be transfixed into a drooling, nodding off junkie. "Stoner To Seeker: The India Photographs" chronicles Indian life in the 1970s. I spent a year and a half traveling all over the Indian subcontinent recording lives, hopes, dreams, and sorrows. India is the most fascinating country in the world where religion, western consumer culture, communism and a traditional way of life are all competing for the soul of India. I was "a stranger in a strange land" and I tried to record that exoticism and awe in my photographs and with written words in my companion Journal. I arrived in India as a stoned freak (hippie-ki-yay) and through my experiences of interacting with students, merchants, intellectuals, sahhus and fellow freaks became a siddhartha, exploring religions, philosophies, and other worldliness approaches to life's goals. This is my vision of India, a bright multi-colored prism of light as seen through a lens darkly.

Since 2019, thousands of people have visited the permanent museum in Amsterdam and the various pop-up exhibitions in different countries. In recent years, more than five thousand students have also taken part in a teaching program of the School of Humanity educational branch. In a world in which people are increasingly opposed to each other rather than next to each other, the Museum of Humanity - always together with local partners - brings people together around the exhibitions. So that people from different worlds can see each other, learn from each other and see the other as a masterpiece.
A Landscape of Memories
'Seeing' beyond seeingIn photography, mindfulness is like observing something for the first time, even though you may have looked at it a thousand times before and it involves a deep kind of knowing. As experienced photographers, we often create images that are technically "correct" and "well" composed but are still missing some intangible aesthetic that we experienced at the moment of creation. Mindful photography infers that while technical proficiency, and an eye for composition are necessary skills, they are not always sufficient to capture the essence of our experience, and therefore emphasizes the importance of training our minds to use all of your senses in order to experience the world differently; to see awe and wonder in what we normally think of as "ordinary."Mindful photography is an art and rests on the photographer's skill and ability to self-efface and focus on the subject/object, thereby providing an authentic visualisation of the image. This collection of carefully curated photographs has been put together with the view to bring different global landscapes under one luxury book, providing visual art at its best. Packed with inspiration, each image is coupled with a quote from the photographer's circle of friends and family. Each image depicts one moment in time across the many continents which Abhi has travelled to since he was a very young person.
The Joy of Looking
Since photography's invention in the early nineteenth century, the medium has produced countless thought-provoking images. The Library of Congress holds more than seventeen million photographs in its collections, ranging from some of the earliest images ever taken to photographs by artists working today. The Joy of Looking: Great Photographs from the Library of Congress presents a selection of striking photographs that deserve a closer look. Both familiar and less well-known photographs appear in this volume. Dorothea Lange's 1936 portrait of Florence Owens Thompson, commonly known as "Migrant Mother," is widely celebrated for humanizing the plight of struggling migrant workers during the Great Depression. Others, like street photographer Anthony Angel's lively series of two women sitting on a New York City park bench in 1952, were unknown during the photographer's lifetime and deserve greater attention. The Joy of Looking invites you to explore the myriad ways the photos in this collection can be experienced. Explore shape and movement; light and darkness; color and textures. Consider connections and conversations between photos. The longer you look, the more you'll see.About the Series: Collection Close-Ups celebrate the diversity, breadth, and depth of Library of Congress collections by gathering about 100 items around a common theme or set of characteristics. These short, affordable, and accessible books bring Library collections to life through historical anecdotes, colorful images, descriptive captions, and sidebars.

London Tube Stations
The history and unique modernist architecture of London Underground stationsCharles Holden's designs for the London Underground from the mid-1920s to the outbreak of World War II represent a high point of transport architecture and modernist design in Britain. His collaboration with Frank Pick, the chief executive of London Transport, brought about a marriage of form and function, civic service and commerce, which is still celebrated today. This book catalogs and showcases the surviving stations from this innovative period and later examples influenced by it. Photographs taken especially for this publication by Philip Butler, annotated with a station-by-station overview by Joshua Abbott, will guide you through the network's modernist gems. London Tube Stations 1924-1961 presents each period of development, line by line, with contemporary photos of the surviving stations. All the key stations have a double-page spread, with a primary exterior photo with one or two supporting images. A broader introduction, illustrated with photos from the London Transport Museum, gives historical context, while a closing chapter lists the demolished examples with further period images. These stations, as famed architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner later noted, would "pave the way for the 20th-century style in England."
Alex Webb: Dislocations
Newly reimagined edition of Alex Webb's now-classic and long out-of-print Dislocations Dislocations presents a contemporary update of Alex Webb's long out-of-print and highly sought title, first published in 1998 as an experiment in alternative book making. This newly reimagined edition brings together pictures from the many disparate locations over Webb's oeuvre, meditating on the act of photography as a form of dislocation in itself. Webb returned to the idea of dislocation during the pandemic, looking at images produced in the twenty years since the original publication--as well as looking back at that first edition. Dislocations expands a prized limited edition with unpublished images that speak to today's sense of displacement. As a series of pictures that would have been impossible to create in a world dominated by closed borders and disrupted travel, it continues to resonate as the world resets.
Betweenness
A sketchbook of visual narratives exploring the veiling as an expression, raising questions about freedom and faithBetweenness, the fourth and most recent publication by Lili Almog, took its inspiration from the veiling practices of an extremist Jewish religious sect. By shifting the setting of the veil from its expected placement in Islamic traditions, Lili Almog's artistic rendering of veiled women highlights the commonality and complexity of the female condition. Delivering an unprecedented portrayal of the symbol of head covering, she raises questions about freedom and faith and how those truths can coexist in modernity. Without imposing judgment, Almog's illustration invites the viewer to interrogate how self-presentation affects their position and power.

Many poems are paired with local photographers' pictures of the Lake area and photos from the Priest Lake Museum collection. From young love to pets lost to old age, from beach bonfires to late-night boat rides, from encounters with wildlife to musty old cabins, these impactful poems will resurface memories and emotions long buried in the reader's past. Throughout the book, the author holds an optimistic view that change, though painful, can be positive. If you have yet to visit Priest Lake, or it has been a while, this book will leave you wanting to make your way there soon. Priest Lake's frequent visitors will be reminded how fortunate they are to be a part of life in North Idaho.
Futurist Conditions
Italian futurism visualized diverse types of motion, which had been rooted in pervasive kinetic and vehicular forces generated during a period of dramatic modernization in the early 20th century. Yet, as David Mather's sweeping intellectual and art historical scholarship demonstrates, it was the camera-not the engine-that proved to be the primary invention against which many futurist ideas and practices were measured. Overturning several misconceptions about Italian futurism's interest in the disruptive and destructive effects of technology, Futurist Conditions provides a refreshing update to the historical narrative by arguing that the formal and conceptual approaches by futurist visual artists reoriented the possibly dehumanizing effects of mechanized imagery toward more humanizing, spiritual aims. Through its sustained analysis of the artworks and writings of Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, and the Bragaglia brothers, dating to the first decade after the movement's founding in 1909, Mather's account of their obsession with kinetic motion pivots around a 1913 debate on the place and relative import of photography among traditional artistic mediums-a debate culminating in the expulsion of the Bragaglias, but one that also prompted a range of productive responses by other futurist artists to world-changing social, political, and economic conditions.

Wild Expectations
This artful book collects the black & white imagery of renowned photographer Magdalena Lily McCarson and the words of poet Zach Hively. Thirty photographs and thirty poems paired in conversation. From the Introduction: "When Magdalena and I decided to collaborate, one spring morning over breakfast in the desert, we set the arbitrary and entirely binding terms of our game. The point was explicitly not to plot and plan every piece. No waiting for the muses to bless us. No perfecting each photograph and each poem for months on end before releasing them into the world. The point was to create recklessly, even explosively, in a dense period of time. That feral attitude spilled out of the theme we chose to guide and inspire every piece for those two months. That theme survived as the title of this book: Wild Expectations."
