Photography and Resistance
This book argues that photography, with its inherent connection to the embodied material world and its ease of transmissibility, operates as an implicitly political medium. It makes the case that the right to see is fundamental to the right to be. Limning the paradoxical links between photography as a medium and the conditions of political, social, and epistemological disappearance, the book interprets works by African American, Indigenous American, Latinx, and Asian American photographers as acts of political activism in the contemporary idiom. Placing photographic praxis at the crux of 21st-century crises of political equity and sociality, the book uncovers the discursive visual movements through which photography enacts reappearances, bringing to visibility erased and elided histories in the Americas. Artists discussed in-depth include Shelley Niro, Carrie Mae Weems, Paula Luttringer, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Matika Wilbur, Martine Guti矇rrez, Ana Mendieta, An-My L礙, and Rebecca Belmore. The book makes visible the American land as a site of contestation, an as-yet not fully recognized battlefield.

Haunted Air
A collection of anonymous Hallowe'en Photographs from America, c.1875 - 1955 The roots of Hallowe'en lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls' Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging 'soul cakes' in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay. O the Wonder of it All
Recently, I was looking through and sorting some of my photographs and one thought kept coming back to me. Some of the different season shots would make an excellent nature photo book so others could experience and see what I love about the Ozark countryside. The photographs selected for this book were taken while traveling down dusty, gravel back roads in the Ozark mountains and countryside throughout Missouri. My husband and I would stop along the side of the roads and I would walk across fields and streams to capture that image and place in time that made me think -- God has created a beautiful world for all of us to enjoy. As I started working on the book, God inspired me with words for a song. "God is the great creator of it all.""God is the great designer of it all.""God is the master painter of it all." I took these ideas and began working with local musicians to bring my song, O' The Wonder of It All, to life with additional photos now available on DVD. Path of the Panther
Path of the Panther is a story of new hope for the recovery of an iconic endangered species and its Everglades home - and a global example of how protecting wildlife corridors can sustain balance for nature and people. The panther is the state animal of Florida, the last big cat surviving east of the Mississippi River, and an emblem of the Endangered Species Act. It was driven to extinction in the eastern United States, except for a small remnant population that persisted in Florida's Everglades. Panther numbers had dwindled to fewer than 20 individuals by the 1980s, but heroic conservation efforts have helped panthers come back to nearly 200 today. The biggest obstacle for the panther's continued recovery is access to enough of its historic territory throughout Florida and beyond. The tale of the Florida panther has grown from the unlikely survival of a rare cat to a story of hope for all of wild Florida. Path of the Panther in now a call to action to recognize and protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor - a network of public and private land that connects the panther's current range in south Florida to suitable habitat throughout the state of Florida and adjoining states. Ari Marcopoulos is an inveterate maker of zines. This project collects in one volume for the first time a selection of zines by Marcopoulos, many never before released, providing a unique insight and overview into an essential part of this influential artist's daily practice. Often self-published or created in collaboration with boutique and independent publishers like ROMA, Dashwood Books, and PPP Editions, these informal, DIY-aesthetic creations function as sketchbook, diary, installation space, and a means of processing Marcopoulos's daily practice of photographing his life, his family, his neighborhood, and the rarified cultural milieu in which he operates. This collection showcases an impressive array of printed zines, exploring each as an artistic object through an engaging layout. Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs 1942-2018
On a winter's night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens on his new feline friend--which he named Loco--and was so inspired by the results that he started photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the start of an extraordinary career that would span seven decades. Long before the Internet and #catsofinstagram, Chandoha was enrapturing the public with his fuzzy subjects. From advertisements to greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles to pet-food packaging, his images combined a genuine affection for the creatures, a strong work ethic, and flawless technique. Chandoha's trademark glamorous lighting, which made each cat's fur stand out in sharp relief, would define the visual vocabulary of animal portraiture for generations and inspire such masters as Andy Warhol, who took cues from Chandoha's charming portraits in his illustrated cat book. Cats leaps into the archives of this genre-defining artist, spanning color studio and environmental portraits, black-and-white street photography, images from vintage cat shows, tender pictures that combine his children with cats and more. A timely reconsideration of the history of photography that places Black studio photographers, and their subjects, at the center From photography's beginnings in the United States, Black studio photographers operated on the developing edge of popular media to produce affirming portraits for their clients, as well as a wide range of photographic work rooted in their communities. Called to the Camera offers a comprehensive history of this work, from the nineteenth-century daguerreotypes of James Presley Ball to the height of Black studios in the mid-twentieth century, and considers contemporary photographers responding to Black studio traditions today. In addition to showcasing famous photographers such as Ball, James Van Der Zee, and Addison Scurlock, this volume brings attention to dozens of other artists across the country, including Florestine Perrault Collins, Austin Hansen, and Henry Clay Anderson. The book features more than one hundred extraordinary vintage photographs, many of them unique objects and some, like those by the Hooks Brothers Studio, published here for the first time. Have you ever wondered about the people who make the wines you love?This book is about my journey into wine, which came almost by accident. Starting out in radio and music, I met many legendary rock photographers (Jim Marshall, Bob Seidemann) who inspired me to start taking pictures. I never thought I could do the same for wine. It became my mission to photograph these passionate and charismatic people who made wine. They live well, eat well, and drink well. Their commitment and dedication extends beyond business. He moved into the record industry as a Promotion Man for Grateful Dead Records, London, Chrysalis, RCA and Sire Records. The Kama Sutra gives detailed instructions on how to spank it. Contemporary Italians touch it for luck before placing a bet. Americans are having it cosmetically enhanced at rates approaching breast enlargement surgery. The female butt, tush, culo, or derri癡re has always inspired awe, fantasy, and slavish devotion.Curiously, its primary purpose is functional rather than aesthetic: butts balance our bodies while running, according to biologists. Treasured Memories
Dear Reader: I am the oldest of four girls and the co-author of this book, Ella Cosby, is the next oldest. Because we are only two years apart in age, we were very close growing up and spent a lot of time together. I noticed that Ella enjoyed drawing and exploring the great outdoors, always looking for an adventure or something to draw. When we were growing up, I always knew that my sister was artistically inclined. She loved to draw and eventually began painting. She was very good, even at a young age. She enjoyed painting pictures of people mostly, as they related to her heritage and her experience as a child growing up with three sisters Eventually, Ella began taking pictures with a disposable camera. She enjoyed that very much and soon purchased a better camera. She would take pictures of just about anything and anybody. It became her passion to capture people, places and things on camera. When the cell phone was discovered, she began taking pictures with her phone. Sometimes she would have both camera and phone taking pictures. Every day I see people doing great things, and it gives me great pleasure to write this forward for one of those persons. I have observed how much Ella loves taking pictures; it has become her passion. This book shows how much she enjoys it and how good she is at it. Ella and Vivian grew up in rural Pittsylvania County, Virginia, with two younger sisters and one brother. Their parents were hard workers who did what they needed to do in order to take care of their family. Vivian was the most studious child and Ella was more of a tomboy who enjoyed nature. At an early age, Ella began taking pictures, while Vivian enjoyed reading and writing. Bothe of the sisters still live in Pittsylvania County very close to one another and their two sisters. They enjoy making people happy and serving others in different capacities. At an early age, they were taught by their mother how to cook, clean, sew and how to become self-sufficient. They have walked in their late mother's shies and become true missionaries in their community. Ella has one sone who lives in Florida. Vivian is the proud mother of one son, a daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren who live in Florida.

The Shipping Forecast, originally published in 1996, is Mark Power's illustration of the UK's Shipping Forecast, broadcast four times a day on BBC Radio 4. The forecast covers the waters of Western Europe and separates them into 31 sea areas encompassing the UK, from Dover to Southeast Iceland to German Bight-- of which Power photographed all of them, over a period of four years.
