The Otherworldly Deep, Photographs of the Ethereal
Dear Readers, Have you ever walked through a graveyard at night? Have you ever been alone in the dark and felt that tingly sensation that makes your hair stand up and gives you shivers? Have you ever awakened at night, heard voices, heard sounds, felt a breeze, or simply felt that something was "off"? You know, heard voices, felt a presence, seen a light or shape, or simply experienced something that gave you goosebumps? This book is not only for those who have experienced such, but also to artistically illustrate the "Otherworldly" aspects of the vast and mysterious sea. My first trio of underwater photography volumes was devoted to documenting and artistically visualizing living mollusks. Living Shells, Living Mollusks, and The Art of the Living Mollusk revealed the wonders of living mollusks ranging from the weird pelagic mollusks found during a blackwater night dive to the weird cephalopods and living seashells; from the very rare, never before photographed, living shells to the commonplace shells photographed artistically. All these books were successes and won a multitude of awards, both domestic and international, both for art and for photography. My next book expanded my artistic photography by revealing the Curves and Angles of this world. My partner, Leah, and I had been diving together for several years when we teamed up with Nus, a famous Indonesian divemaster, to publish our book detailing the undersea creatures of Indonesia, The Undersea Art of Indonesia. This current book, The Otherworldly Deep: Photographs of the Ethereal, is an attempt to go a step further, actually giant leaps further, than the mollusk books and even beyond the Indonesian book. We want to show our faithful Readers another aspect of the undersea world ... the Otherworldly aspect of this vast, mysterious, mystical underwater world. In this volume, we hope to acquaint our wonderful Audience with the ethereal aspect of this world. Through our photographs and text, we want to show our Audience just how extremely mystical and outrageously strange the deep blue really is. As we said before, if you have ever felt "goosebumps" or the "Willies" as I call that feeling, if you have ever been diving and felt that you were not alone, ever heard voices, singing, seen shapes, or unexplained lights, these photographs and experiences are for you! Please enjoy what we anticipate will be photos that you have never before seen and feelings unique to these subjects. Thank you! Charles and Leah
Paris Revisited
In this ode to the charms of Paris and Parisian style, Belgian photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh captures the essence of the city's most iconic venues and its perennially chic denizens. He seeks out the culinary hotspots of Paris and turns his camera on the places to see and be seen. Inspired by the microcosm of Saint-Germain, his Paris is imbued with the spirit of the places where people gather: the casual efficiency of waiters at Les Deux Magots and the Caf矇 de Flore, the boisterous atmosphere of Brasserie Lipp. Long influenced by urban and innate style of Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau, van Cauwenbergh's Paris is one of seduction and nonchalance, of beautiful women, and the heady emotions of first love.
Michael Caine
Over the decades, no camera has captured Caine better than that of his collaborator and long-time friend, Terry O'Neill. "When the pre-eminent portrait photographer of the day met the Cockney kid dominating the London film scene, magic was made." -- Australian Women's Weekly Icons "Caine, the timeless gentleman." -- Diego Armes, GQ Portugal "The engaging images are either black and white or in color and therefore perfectly show all facets of the actor. A wonderful book about a very special and remarkable actor! 5 Stars!" -- Lovely Books "I had to be an actor," Michael Caine once said. "[...] And of course, you have to remember with me, the alternative was a factory." A working-class actor who broke through to stardom, Caine's screen-time involves standout performances across multiple genres. To this day, he is synonymous with a certain kind of urbane cool. No camera has captured this quality over the decades better than that of his collaborator and long-time friend, Terry O'Neill. Michael Caine: Photographed by Terry O'Neill offers an immersive visual journey through Michael Caine's career, immortalizing Caine's charm both in and out of character. Caine occupies a landmark position in cinema and O'Neill was there from the early days of his stellar career. From the comedy of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to the European drama of Seven Times A Woman; from the miasma of The Magus to the British cult classic Get Carter, this book combines black and white and color images and includes never-before-seen contact sheets. Featuring the following films: Mona Lisa, Midnight in Saint Petersburg / Bullet to Beijing, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Blue Ice, Without a Clue, Get Carter, Deadfall, Magus, Woman Times Seven, Funeral in Berlin.
Terry O'Neill
Terry O'Neill (1938-2019) was one of the world's most celebrated and collected photographers, with work displayed and exhibited at first-class museums and fine-art galleries worldwide. His iconic images of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Brigitte Bardot, Faye Dunaway, and David Bowie - to name but a few - are instantly recognizable across the globe. Now, for the first time, O'Neill selects a range of images from his extensive archive of "vintage prints", which will surprise and delight collectors and photography lovers alike. Long before the age of digital, photographers would send physical prints to the papers and magazines. These prints were passed around, handled by many, stamped on the back, and often times captioned. After use, the prints were either filed away, thrown out or - for the lucky few - sent back to the photographer or their photo agencies. At the dawn of the 1960s, when O'Neill's career began, physical prints were the norm. Terry kept as many as he could that were sent back to him. "I just kept everything," he says. "I don't know why. Back then, there wasn't really a reason to keep them. Photos were used straight away and then I just moved on to the next assignment. No one was thinking these would be worth anything down the line, let alone fifty years later." This book collects hundreds of these rare images, a true must for Terry's fans and photography collectors.
Mapplethorpe/Von Gloeden
Classicism reimagined in the sensual staged portraits of Robert Mapplethorpe and Wilhelm von GloedenAcclaimed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-89) was also a dedicated collector. Upon visiting Italy in the 1980s, he became familiar with the holdings of Fratelli Alinari and more specifically the work of Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931). One of the forerunners of staged photography, von Gloeden's oeuvre was filled with sensuous images of gods, angels and demons. These motifs find their own reverberation in Mapplethorpe's striking nudes and silhouettes. Mapplethorpe/von Gloeden juxtaposes the work of these two visionaries to striking effect. The interest in the classical and the sculptural approach in the photographic medium comes alive in both photographers' choice of subjects, poses and atmospheres. The result is an ethereal yet unconventional image of beauty and eros. Taken together, these photographs invite questions about the themes of the body's sensuality, and offer themselves as food for thought on how art, morality and spirituality continuously evolve.
Prague Revisited
This book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague's history from World War II to the "Velvet Revolution."The first chapter, illustrated by his mother's black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter's life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family's narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia's transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm. Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague's long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers' travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. A foreword by John Rasmussen, Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, sets the stage for the story and images in this book. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty five books, illuminates the city's Judaeo-Christian history.
Wander
Wander features Sean Palfrey's beautiful, varied, and insightful travel photography and writings, exploring the joy of following a winding course. To wander is to travel without a fixed route or destination, to move expectantly through the world. Wander, the second volume in Sean Palfrey's photography book series, explores the joy of following a winding course. Palfrey is a renowned pediatrician and child health advocate, who travels the world with his work and for pleasure. His fascination with people, places, and stories informs both his artistic and professional practices. Wander traces Palfrey's journeys across continents and cultures over five decades and features seventy photographs of remarkable places, from the mountain ranges of South Africa to the beaches of Chile, the woods of Canada to the deserts of New Mexico, to name a few. In the text accompanying each photo, Palfrey recounts his experiences and meditations in lyrical narratives. Wander depicts and describes vastness, intimacy, beauty, and loss. Palfrey affirms photography's capacity to spark our imaginations: "Every photo here has a story, a backstory, a then-story, and a since-story."
Landscapes of Hope
An environmental success story involving people from all walks of life and points of view.At a time when division, polarization, misinformation, and antagonisms pervade the United States, there is hope for the future. Landscapes of Hope shows how people from all walks of life and backgrounds can come together, talk, work out details, and compromise to do something special for generations to come: safeguarding 900,000 acres of spectacular wild country in Utah.Perched on the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, the Greater San Rafael Swell spans 8,000 square miles in south-central Utah and showcases a rich tapestry of landscapes. Its colorful geological strata span 350 million years of Earth's history and contain a remarkably well-preserved fossil record from times when primitive marine species first emerged to the era of dinosaurs and the appearance of large mammals. The region's arid climate and isolation have also worked together to preserve cultural artifacts left by Indigenous peoples who have occupied the area for some 13,000 years. As the treasures of the Greater San Rafael Swell became widely known, conservationists undertook campaigns during the 1960s to designate large tracts of public lands in the region as wilderness, where "the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." Initially, some residents of Emery County, located in the heart of the Greater Swell, strongly opposed these efforts, concerned that wilderness designations could limit ranching and mining, undermine residents' livelihoods, and sever their cultural ties to the lands.Reconciling these opposing views at first seemed impossible, but, starting in the late 1990s, Emery County leaders and residents engaged a wide spectrum of stakeholders in discussions spanning more than two decades. In 2019, their efforts to find common ground culminated in the passage of the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, which designated substantial portions of public lands for multiple uses while creating twenty-five new wilderness and other protected areas, safeguarding nearly 900,000 stunningly beautiful acres.Landscapes of Hope celebrates the commitment of those who took rightful pride in their heritage yet worked with others to forge comprehensive legislation, conserving landscapes of extraordinary grandeur and profound cultural and ecological importance. The fruits of their endeavors are portrayed in Steve Strom's captivating photographs and informative stories that showcase the splendor of the areas now protected in perpetuity.

At Work
When Brian Doben began working on At Work over 10 years ago, he had already been a professional photographer for 15 years and felt as though he had lost his voice--or perhaps never found his own voice. Following a near-fatal bike accident, Brian realized that to find inspiration, to find love, he had to spend time with people who love what they do. From ranchers in Texas to a chemist in Boston, a sumo wrestler in Japan to street performers in Cuba, At Work is a collection of photographs of people from around the world "just doing their jobs." It is a study of our world and how the people in it follow their unique callings. The photographs in At Work capture genuine moments that emerge through conversation, not necessarily direction. In At Work, Brian Doben celebrates the dignity of work and reminds us to remember what it's like to do what we love. To have a conversation, capture a moment, relay a message, and create an image you won't soon forget.
Legacy America
In this coffee-table companion book to the documentary film of the same name, artist and author Holt Webb tells the story of the American Steam engine through his camera lens. The book contains one hundred pages of creative color and black-and-white photography captured during the filming of the 2025 documentary Legacy America. From the film's opening monologue: You may have seen these icons before.Maybe you saw them in a picture book or even a movie. These machines of yesterday were controlled by one simple element: Steam. I am in awe at the detail of what goes into making these living, breathing monsters work. What once began as train tenders full of coal is now replaced by computers with circuits smaller than the eye can see. The pioneers who built these machines figured out how to venture across the American frontier to get us the food we eat and the cargo we needed to build the infrastructure of our nation. And for the first time, these steam-powered machines allowed us to travel long distances in comfort. It's the American Steam engine. My name is Holt Webb, and I'm a photographer. Join me as we venture across the American frontier, uncovering the people, places, and stories that built this great nation and brought us together. This ... is our Legacy America.
Arnold Newman’s Magazine World
A richly illustrated presentation of the creative career of the acclaimed portraitist, documentarian and experimentalist frequently found in the pages of Life, Look and Harper's BazaarAmerican photographer Arnold Newman (1918-2006) is best known for his compelling portraits of artists, composers, actors and political figures of the postwar era. Newman's deliberately constructed compositions express biography, creative vision and professional expertise. By building each image and methodically planning his photoshoots, he developed a graphic visual style that was well suited to popular magazines, such as Life, Look, Fortune, Holiday and Harper's Bazaar. This book considers the full breadth of Newman's photographic practice, including his magazine commissions and advertisements, and highlights the crucial role magazines played in shaping his career. In three major illustrated sections, the authors explore the ways that Newman learned through magazines; how his career was propelled by magazine commissions during the 1950s and 1960s; and how mass media publications circulated his work and cemented his reputation. The photographs reveal Newman's many influences and chart his considerable impact on American visual culture. Tracing Arnold Newman's relationship with and within the popular press expands our understanding of his work, reveals the inventiveness of his craft and underscores his undeniable impact on American visual culture in the postwar period. This book was published in association with Art Gallery of Ontario; Museum Hanmi.
Suturing the City
An ethnographic and photographic investigation into the complex meanings of living in Congo's urban worlds today.Focusing upon the 'urban now', a moment suspended between lingering precolonial references, the broken dreams of a colonial past, and the not yet realised promises of neoliberal futures, this book provides an ethnographic and photographic investigation of the complex meanings of living - and living together - in Congo's urban worlds today. The authors, anthropologist Filip De Boeck and photographer Sammy Baloji, take the reader on a tour of specific urban sites in Kinshasa and beyond. American Photography
The visual narrative of the modern United States: from canonical photography by Robert Frank and Diane Arbus to vernacular picture postcards and magazine spreadsSince its invention in 1839, photography has become deeply embedded in American society. American Photography captures this phenomenon through over 280 images, portraying American life through the lenses of renowned photographers such as Nan Goldin, Dawoud Bey and Paul Strand. The catalog begins with selected images from perhaps the most famous photo essay on American life, Robert Frank's The Americans (1958). It then moves beyond the classical canon to offer a striking selection of vernacular photography: vintage magazine advertisements for Coca-Cola and Cadillac; family albums; postcards; and album covers. These examples are integrated seamlessly among the more well-known images until any supposed distinction between "high art" and "low culture" is erased. This story of American photography is told through the outstanding collection of the Rijksmuseum, enriched by loans from US institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Gordon Parks: Pastor E.F. Ledbetter and the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 1953
The first feature article that Parks both wrote and photographed is reassembled through previously unseen images, contact sheets, ephemeral material and Parks' original manuscript Published with The Gordon Parks Foundation and Howard University. In 1953, Gordon Parks returned to Chicago on an assignment for Life magazine to photograph the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and the Reverend Ernest F. Ledbetter Sr. for a series on American religious life. This would be the first assignment for which he was both writer as well as photographer. Parks approached the Near West Side church with a decisive eye toward composing compelling images that conveyed simultaneously the universal humanity and local specificity of the religious community. Life never published his photographs or essay, yet as this book demonstrates, Parks' visual and textual representation of Black religious life powerfully documents the dynamism of a community shaped by the Great Migration and Chicago's industrial landscape. This publication features more than 65 previously unpublished photographs and contact sheets, complemented by Parks' unseen manuscript and ephemeral material from the private collection of the Ledbetter family. A range of scholarly essays provides further insight and contextual analysis in art history, cultural geography, Black religious studies and creative writing.Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was an acclaimed American photographer and film director prominent in US documentary photojournalism, particularly in issues of civil rights and poverty. His many photographic series include his iconic photos of poor Americans during the 1940s (taken for the Farm Security Administration Program) and his photographic essays for Life magazine. He directed films including Shaft and the semiautobiographical The Learning Tree.
Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe: South Africa, 1977/78
Superb photographs documenting the people, places and activist movements in apartheid-era South AfricaPublished with The Gordon Parks Foundation. American photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe's understanding of race and class was shaped by Chicago's systemic discriminatory practices; as she later reflected, the city had, "in its own way, a form of apartheid." After encountering Ernest Cole's photographs and training with mentors such as Gordon Parks and Garry Winogrand in the early 1970s, Moutoussamy-Ashe (born 1951) traveled to South Africa at the height of apartheid, armed with her camera. In March 1977 she accompanied her husband Arthur Ashe there, as part of a team filming a TV documentary on sports and apartheid. Returning alone the next year, she visited Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, and the townships of Alexandra, Kliptown, Lenasia and Soweto, getting to know the country and its people through her lens, gaining special access to various events and documenting encounters with influential figures. In stark black-and-white and vivid color, Moutoussamy-Ashe's images offer a distinct perspective from an African American photographer on a turbulent period in South African history. This publication, winner of the 2024 Gordon Parks Foundation/Steidl Book Prize, features more than 100 of Moutoussamy-Ashe's photographs, many never published before.
