This is a book of favorites. We all have them, yours, mine and ours. That special something that may transport you to a different place in time, bringing back memories of a special occasion, or just a sweet moment shared with a friend over a cup of coffee. For me, food is intrinsically linked with love and connection. It pleases me to make someone's favorite and see their eyes light up with anticipation of that first bite. It is soul-satisfying to give that happiness to people. So, what follows is a beginning, a small compilation of pastries and desserts that are favorites to many people I've had the pleasure to bake for over the years. Much love and gratitude goes out to all those whom have given me their support and encouragement here in Ojai, with a special nod to the Thacher community in particular. Thanks to my darling family- Jude, Ashley, Garner and Graham for always giving me their love. And a very special thanks to my photographer Richard Lancaster, my real life James Bond! Let the baking begin...

Food with Friends
Edgar Randolf, a homeowner, Edna Seabrook, his cook, and the homeowner's friend, Dan Cleary, expound on food and cooking. Dan comes sometimes with another friend. Their notions of dining include about diet and the kitchen. Edgar and Edna enjoy regular meals in their living situation, Edna is the most involved in the cooking and kitchen duties. Their time is spent with regular enjoyment of food. In the course of many weeks, Edgar serves herbal teas and dishes to his friends. As years pass, Edna lectures on cooking and takes some outside jobs. The general approach to the meals goes through various dishes, to baking, cookie making, rolls, bread and pretzels. Then the serious meat eaters dishes are given attention. After lengthy herb tea presentations, the focus is on Thanksgiving and turkey, and that is followed by some pork recipes. Then, the general approach is from a mock cafe where there are considerations of vegetarianism, fasting, and cookware. Finally, a return to the general meals and dishes takes the consideration to a new view of more dishes. Matthew was born abroad and graduated from high school in Hawaii (Oahu). He has an AA university degree. He has written some poetry, getting some poems published in a journal and books. His recent books published is Dream and Vision Poems (2021)

Gastronativism
Winner, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards - Food - Food Heritage - USA Nominee, Book Award in Food Issues and Advocacy, James Beard Foundation The Italian political right is outraged by halal tortellini and a pork-free lasagna served at the Vatican. In India, Hindu fundamentalists organize attacks on Muslims who sell beef. European anti-immigrant politicians denounce couscous and kebabs. In an era of nationalist and exclusionary movements, food has become a potent symbol of identity. Why has eating become so politically charged--and can the emotions surrounding food be redirected in a healthier direction? Fabio Parasecoli identifies and defines the phenomenon of "gastronativism," the ideological use of food to advance ideas about who belongs to a community and who does not. As globalization and neoliberalism have transformed food systems, people have responded by seeking to return to their roots. Many have embraced local ingredients and notions of cultural heritage, but this impulse can play into the hands of nationalist and xenophobic political projects. Such movements draw on the strong emotions connected with eating to stoke resentment and contempt for other people and cultures. Parasecoli emphasizes that gastronativism is a worldwide phenomenon, even as it often purports to oppose local aspects and consequences of globalization. He also explores how to channel pride in culinary traditions toward resisting transnational corporations, uplifting marginalized and oppressed groups, and assisting people left behind by globalization. Featuring a wide array of examples from all over the world, Gastronativism is a timely, incisive, and lively analysis of how and why food has become a powerful political tool.

Recipes from Dobromyl
In the summer of 2018, I participated in an intensive yet enjoyable week with a dedicated English teacher in Dobromyl, Ukraine, and 18 of her students. For me, there is nothing more beautiful than the faces of young people who are eager to learn. In this case, the enthusiastic students were improving their English language skills. As one of the projects during our week together, we decided to create a Ukrainian cookbook - in English. Each student went home and came back to "English camp" the next day with one or more Ukrainian recipes. All of the recipes are untested. Each is written in its own unedited style.

Stillroom Cookery
Prepare and Preserve Food Using Time-Tested TechniquesLiving with her grandparents as a child in the 1930s, Grace Firth learned to garden, preserve, and cook food the old-fashioned way. Back then, a home's stillroom chamber was used as a sort of kitchen prep where all manner of delicious foods and beverages were made using a variety of time-tested techniques to keep food from spoiling-all without using harmful chemicals or preservatives. In Stillroom Cookery, Firth passes along the wisdom of time-honored preserving practices, revealing practical, inventive, and proven methods for natural preservation, storage, and preparation of food. Each chapter focuses on fundamental stillroom skills and recipes, such as curing meats, dehydrating foods, drying, smoking, fermenting, pickling, canning, preserving sweets, baking bread, distilling vinegars, concocting savory sauces, and making cheese and other milk products. There is also a beverage chapter that covers brewing beer and making wine. Additionally, a chart in the appendix plots out a garden planting plan for a family of five. Firth writes in a simple and engaging style that comes from years of experience. She encourages the use of tested techniques on classic food staples as well as a flexible approach that is adaptable to changing dietary trends.Like a treasure chest full of priceless surprises, this classic cookbook is a must-have resource for the library or kitchen of anyone interested in living sustainably, eating well, and staying healthy. It presents a realistic, practical vision of living the good life. In the dedication to Stillroom Cookery Firth expresses her sentiment which animates the whole work: "that people will understand old ways as they reach for tomorrow.""I have always gardened, preserved and cooked in the old ways though I did not realize that I was different from other homemakers until the 1960s. My isolation from the mainstream can be explained. As a child I lived with my grandparents, both sets of whom were older than average, and I went directly from high school to college summer school. During college I was poor. After graduating from the University of Southern California, I traveled to Alaska where living conditions were somewhat old-fashioned. Once married, I got involved with moving to Virginia, taking care of three youngsters and writing historical novels about my beloved Alaska. My husband and I purchased "a little bit of Alaska," a small wilderness tract near the mountains in Virginia, where we spent all our weekends and holidays.Although I was secretary of a variety of community associations, I had little housewifely interaction and rarely went shopping. I remained unaware of the changes in American cooking and eating habits until I returned to graduate school in 1968. From the young men and women, I learned that my way of doing and their aspirations for the good life had a lot in common. My life reflected that which I had learned in my grandmothers' stillrooms, gardens and homes; the young people were putting their faith in the old ways and in the goodness of the earth." -GRACE FIRTHThis book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1648371337).

Packed
Eating is one of life's simple pleasures, Eloise Emmett believes even if she is eating from a container in the carpark while waiting at her kids dancing, she wants it to be delicious and enjoyable, and to feel good and well nourished after eating it. This book was created so she could share what she has learnt over many years of being a chef, and most recently being a busy mum of three very active children. She has a very full life - they live on the Tasman Peninsula and her children attend a school in Hobart. For most of the past 10 years they commuted daily with the children to take them to school. And also take them to their many activities outside of school such as dancing, karate, football, cricket, swimming, art classes, acting classes and more. Eloise's husband was often away for work for long periods so she did this by herself the majority of the time. Eloise also run a busy accommodation and cooking workshop retreat on the Tasman Peninsula and is a freelance photographer, consultant for hospitality and publishing and food-stylist.But she never allowed this to be an excuse to not find time to cook nutritious meals. Beside the fact that it would cost a fortune to feed her family on takeaways - the cost on their health was just something she is not willing to compromise on. Packed contains over 80 nutrient dense recipes, not just to fill kids lunchboxes, although it will be a handy lunch box resource but for caf矇 level delicious meals ideas for on-the-go lifestyles. The book also contains how to prepare the food in a busy life and WHY we should prioritise eating well, exploring the costs to your wallet, health and the planet.Eloise has plenty of professional experience behind her and is very well qualified to be pursuing a career in Cookbook publishing. Eloise was the head chef at The Astor grill and T42 in Hobart and had stints in 5 star hotels and resorts including Bedarra and Hayman islands before moving to the Tasman Peninsula nearly 20 years ago to run her own restaurant, The Mussel Boys, which was once described as one of the best country eateries in the state by leading food critics. Eloise always cooked with regional produce in her restaurant including oysters and mussels from nearby farms, venison, quail and wallaby farmed or hunted locally and fresh fish from local fisherman along with veggies fruits and more.It wasn't until she had her own children and was attending children's playgroups and was working in the local primary school launch into learning pre-kinder cooking class that she saw first-hand the prevalence and normality of packet plastic food fed to children. Plastic packaged foods is not only creating disease in the children but bad for the environment too. And she witnessed the lack of basic cooking skills. Eloise said parents were surprisingly shocked at how easy basic recipes were to make. Eloise firmly believes that it is a lie sold to us through the packet food industry that cooking is hard and overly time consuming, and children will not eat well. The inspiration for Eloise's first book The Real Food for Kids Cookbook was all the recipes she cooked with the 0-4 year old children in the program at the launch into learning. She then when on to produce Seafood Everyday after hearing many people did not eat the recommended for good health, few serves of seafood each week as they believed Seafood was expensive and difficult to cook. Seafood Everyday also won 2 Gourmand Cookbook awards. Eloise then produced The Tasmania Pantry cookbook and The Tasmania Pantry 2 cookbook that have both won cookbook awards. Eloise has also helped many clients publish cookbooks. Eloise lives on the Tasman Peninsula where she runs her Accommodation business and boutique cooking school Little Norfolk Bay Events and Chalets, teaching cooking workshops, weekend cooking retreats and Indulgence weekends.
