Eating with a Stoma
In this book, I want to share my journey and offer you some of the tips, tricks, and recipes that have helped me over the last 26 years. While some foods are known to increase the risk of blockages, they don't need to be off-limits forever. With a few simple modifications, you should be able to enjoy all the foods you love once again.Like many new Ostomates, I was initially confused about which foods I could eat. I was told by professionals, certain foods might cause a blockage, I didn't hear the word "might", I just heard the word "blockage" and it made me fear that I would never be able to eat some of my favourite foods again. But I realized that by tweaking the way I prepared and cooked my food, making a few little adjustments to recipes, I was able to eat and enjoy all the foods I loved. Some foods that are known to pose a higher risk of blockage for those with a stoma include: Nuts Coconut Celery Mushrooms Sweetcorn Raw fruit skins Bean sprouts and bamboo shoots Dried fruits such as currants/raisins
The Role of Food in Resettlement and Rehabilitation
Exploring the role of food in enabling people with convictions to live a "good life", this book examines the tangible ways in which growing food, cooking, and eating together has the potential to be both transformative and small steps incremental in facilitating desistance journeys for people with convictions. At its most reductive, food sustains us physically; it's the fuel which keeps us alive. Of course, emotionally, culturally, and socially it does more than that. This edited book addresses an under-researched area of resettlement and rehabilitation which has real-world application to policy and practice in criminal justice and related areas such as mental health, physical health, employment, and education. Importantly, given the relatability of food growing, cooking, and eating to the wider public, it offers opportunities to connect the desistance journeys and lives of people with convictions to the wider public. The Role of Food in Resettlement and Rehabilitation will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, social work, and food studies. It is also important reading for government policymakers in criminal justice and health care, social policy, and criminal justice practitioners, including prison governors, social workers, and providers of services for people with convictions in custody and community.

Eat, Drink and Be Buried
As with anything else made up of many moving parts, human beings eventually wear out and die. Basically, simply living, no matter how one chooses to do so, will kill each one of us. The human life-span is relatively short. Even the longest lived lives are still too short. It's humbling to realize that certain tortoises and other "lesser" creatures live longer than "themasters of the earth." Despite this grim news, the majority of the population, based on the choices it makes, seems hell-bent on accelerating the arrival of its demise.Governments and big corporations are quick to lecture the masses about the sanctity of life. They do this while simultaneously enacting policies which have very little to do with your well-being and more to do with the two most important things m the world (at least to them), profits and power. I'm of the opinion that one's best health is the most important thing. Unfortunately, most don't think about health until they no longer have it. They're too busy "living," as they call it. You've seen the ads for pizza, burgers, doughnuts, soda, beer and so much other junk, in a mantle of trendy, cool, fun and totally normal- The sad fact is, eating these things and engaging in other self-injurious behaviors is, in fact, normal. Therein lies the problem.America needs a different perspective and here it is. A social commentary for your health.

Plant Based Diet for Beginners
Congratulations on taking the first steps on your plant-based journey! Whether you're completely new to this way of eating or already somewhat familiar with it, I hope you find similar benefits to those I and many others have experienced following a plant-based diet.I was born and raised in the Midwest eating the standard Americandiet (SAD). A love of athletics eventually led me to playing college football for the University of Nebraska while majoring in livestock production. But a few years into college, my life took a new direction after a career-ending back injury left me physically limited and unable to exercise. I became 100 pounds overweight, which is what made finding a way to regain my health through dietary means so important.Searching for hope, I began researching the many diets that promised healthy and sustainable weight loss. Initially, my experience as a student studying animal science led me toward the many diets built on minimizing carbohydrates and maximizing protein and fat from animal sources. Though I followed the strict protocols of these diets, I wasn't seeing any positive results. I was extremely frustrated to find that my health was, in fact, deteriorating. After exhausting what seemed like all of my options, I stumbled upon what is known as a whole-food, plant-based diet. Although this way of eating was completely unknown to me, I was surprised to find that it was common in some of the longest-living and healthiest populations around the globe. With nothing to lose, I decided to jump right in-and almost immediately began to see and feel positive results. Not only did my weight begin to drop, but my digestion improved, my skin cleared up, and the inflammation in my joints began to dissipate, too. There was, of course, a learning curve. It was a dramatic change from the types of food I was used to eating and preparing. But I found that a few simple alterations made the switch to a plant-based diet easy, sustainable, and enjoyable. Over the course of the following two years, I was able to lose 100 pounds and completely regain my health. While losing weight was my original goal, I believe my greatest accomplishment has been encouraging and leading many of my family members and friends to regain their own health. Building on what I've learned by helping others transition to and thrive on a plant-based diet, I've compiled my favorite recipes, techniques, and habits in this book. Itruly believe that anyone can improve their health and quality of lifethrough a plant-based diet-including you!
