Our Aching Bones, Our Breaking Hearts
We confront our own aging long before we ourselves become old. Through the roles we play as family, friends, or caregivers to our elders, we learn to anticipate our own later years. Drawing on the author's half-century career in gerontology and anthropology, the poems of Our Aching Bones, Our Breaking Hearts explore the physical, emotional, and spiritual impact of the aging experience on the nurses and patients, parents and grandparents, retirees and volunteers, Holocaust survivors and roommates, and elderly spouses and mourners he has known. The poet shares stories in a variety of settings, which include a summer camp, an orchard, a national park, a nursery and a nursing home, hospitals, an older couple's marital bed, and the steps of a small-town front porch. At the core of these stories stand the aging body and mind, the well-worn heart, deep reservoirs of humor, love, and anger, and the longing, defiance, regret and gratitude of life's concluding decades.---------------"This collection finds the pathos, the epiphanies, and light for a darkening path because though aging and death are old news, this contradiction, this broken contract, is happening to us for the first time and we need a little help from our friends."-Sandra L Kleven, editor of Cirque "Joel Savishinsky's stories and visceral imagery show us how we deepen by enduring. You will long remember the kindness and depth of this highly skilled poet."-Ellen Hirning Schmidt, author of Oh, Say Did You Know "Whether speaking as the main character or an observer, these poems ring true and prescient."-D Ferrara, founder of San Fedele Press

Loving Life at 50+
Turning 50 is often a line in the sand for women. On one side is youth, on the other is the decline into old age. But that doesn't mean we have to look old or act old - in fact, it's quite the opposite. In our 50s we get the best of both worlds - the spryness of youth and the wisdom of aging. It's the perfect decade to live our best lives and Maria Sabando has cracked the code on doing just that. Through loads of fun, delicious, and healthy recipes sprinkled throughout, Maria motivates women to make food their friend, not their foe, and do it with pizazz as they entertain friends and family. Maria loves yoga, and she introduces readers to a new pose in every chapter - encouraging them to find their own "yoga" - the exercise that feels like fun rather than work, helping to maintain a healthy weight with ease. Along the way, she inspires readers to come to peace with their bodies. She helps women find a balance between enjoying food but not overindulging. Yet she's no stranger to letting loose and having some fun, expressed in her quirky saying, "Indulge or you'll bulge," which means giving into temptation a little bit now so you can ward off the temptation to binge. Through clever quips and true wisdom, Maria encourages women to embrace and enhance what makes them beautiful and release the rest with good humor. She goes well beyond giving tips to adopt a healthy lifestyle, eat well, and maintain a healthy weight. To Maria, these habits simply set the stage for readers to live the exact life they want to live, right now - one where women feel fully alive. Yet, this is not just a self-help book. It's also a memoir. Along the way, readers find a friend in Maria through personal stories that will make them laugh out loud at her mishaps and successes. It gives them a glimpse into what it was like growing up Italian in America, and being a bit of an Ita lian diva, today. Like listening to a familiar tune on the radio, women who grew up in the 60s and 70s will relate to her reminiscing and feel like they're in a car loaded with friends, taking a ride through time with the top down. This book is for every woman who could use a big shot of inspiration, a little boost, or simply a chance to laugh out loud as they step into their 50s and beyond. By the time readers turn the final page, they will have hundreds of clever ideas on how to craft a life of love, happiness, and meaning.
Coconut Flour Recipes
Coconut flour is simply flour made from coconut meat instead of wheat and grains like other flours. As its name implies, it is coconut meat that's now in a very refined powder form. One, it is a very healthy flour. It is healthy because it is a hundred percent gluten-free unlike most flours out there. This proves to be beneficial for those who cannot tolerate gluten in their bodies as well as in preventing celiac disease from attacking. Two, it is a flour that's very high in fiber which makes it flour that can aid digestion, lower blood cholesterol levels since this flour is low in saturated fats, as well as prevent diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels since fiber can also lower absorption and concentration of sugar in the blood.

Recipient of the 2023 Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Book AwardYale professor and leading expert on the psychology of successful aging, Dr. Becca Levy, draws on her ground-breaking research to show how age beliefs can be improved so they benefit all aspects of the aging process, including the way genes operate and the extension of life expectancy by 7.5 years. The often-surprising results of Levy's science offer stunning revelations about the mind-body connection. It's time for all of us to rethink aging and Breaking the Age Code shows us how to do just that.Based on her innovative research, stories that range from pop culture to the corporate boardroom, and her own life, Levy shows how age beliefs shape all aspects of our lives. She also presents a variety of fascinating people who have benefited from positive age beliefs as well as an entire town that has flourished with these beliefs.Breaking the Age Code is a landmark work, presenting not only easy-to-follow techniques for improving age beliefs so they can contribute to successful aging, but also a blueprint to reduce structural ageism for lasting change and an age-just society.

Retirement represents a rich psychological growth time, and successful aging is characterized by cultivating a growth mindset alongside a healthy dose of grit, or passion plus persistence. This book shares insights from a survey of 125 participants, all of whom are 55 or older, on retirement beliefs and time management. The author encourages retirees to embrace the concept of rewiring their brains in a psychological reboot applying to both work and non-work scenarios. Each chapter presents rewiring exercises that prepare space for new possibilities to germinate immediately, and "possibility time" exercises that foster digging deeper into legacy roots for shaping days where you can flourish. Seasoned citizen years have the possibility of becoming your greatest life plots when you rewire your personality and ability skillset.
The Lies, The Truth and The Food We Eat
Can you tell which food is real and what fake food is? Look closely at the cover of this book; many thanks to Marlene Rounds for this concept, design, and photography. The bottom line is what is in the real interest of Big Pharma, the FDA, and our government? Are they looking out for our best interest? Or are they taking bribes to line their own pockets at the expense of the very taxpayers they are supposed to represent? Some things have to change to regain our trust and make these institutions viable again. I hope this small book will spark enough interest to make you "really want to know" what's really going on with our food supply in the United States.

My Path
I have told my story in the context of the many transitions I have faced - some happy others unwanted. But always trying to approach life with hope and optimism. My story is not a survival story. Rather it illustrates the importance of early decisions. But just as important in my development of a Transition Theory which explains how to understand and massage your transitions. The book includes my story, columns I wrote for the magazine Better Living. (now out of print) and a summary of the transition theory in the hopes of taking the mystery if not the misery out of change.

Vaginal Prolapse Colpocleisis Lefort Surgery
Vaginal prolapse is a painful, embarrassing condition which adversely affects the lives of countless women. It is usually a secret women do not share with anyone except their partner or doctor. Many of us feel ashamed to admit it has happened to such an intimate part of our bodies. One reason is we don't want anyone picturing the bulge it makes. Another is since most women say no one ever told them this was a possibility we have no idea who else in our circle has dealt with it and if so, how? After interacting with a supportive group of women on Facebook, I decided to tell my personal story of vaginal vault prolapse surgery and recovery. This private group helps others by telling their stories of misery, surgeries and triumphs. The details of living with prolapse should not be kept secret, but shared with younger women to help them and prevent it happening to them. There are some preventions but only a few surgical cures. Colpocleisis LeFort Surgery is one that repairs prolapse and gives back freedom of movement and comfort. There is a serious trade-off which is reviewed in this book. It is an individual choice which is never made lightly. I made the choice and have not regretted it for a moment. I only wish it had not been necessary and that the gynecologists who treated me over the years had said even one word about prolapse prevention. I feel very let down by them. It could have been prevented. I hope the advice in this book helps to prevent it for others. Tell women. Share the information. This is a story of sadness, recovery and joy.
