Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Medicine - Pharmacology, Pharmacy, grade: A, course: Biotehcnology, language: English, abstract: Pleurotus ostreatus is primarily an edible mushroom with high nutritional value and biomedical relevance, as it contains numerous bioactive components that generate the development of therapeutic effects. The purpose of this study is to determine the phytopharmacological effects of Pleurotus ostreatus. FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of cycloalkane, nitriles, halogen compounds, aromatic monosubstituted compounds, and carboxyl acid. The presence of 12 bioactive compounds was revealed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and components in the extract were identified and quantified using HPLC. The antimicrobial efficacy of Pleurotus ostreatus aqueous extract against Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus amyloliquifaciens seems promising. The extract's anticancer efficacy against HeLa and MCF7 at 25 繕g/ml and exhibits strong cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 6.8 μg/mL and 17.5 μg/mL respectively.

Our style was so lucky as to be able to include among its theoretical writings an entire volume about an ancient Q穫 Gōng routine, the "少林 衣 钵 真 传 - Sh?o L穩n Yī Bō Zhēn Chu獺n - Canon of the real transmission of Sh?o L穩n, attributed to the Taoist/ sage 升 霄 道人 - Sh矇ng Xiāo and represents a true treasure, never revealed to western practitioners. I tried to put into perspective the hermetic teachings of Taoist practice of this ancient text with the teachings of traditional Chinese medicine, correlating them also with the exercises I already know, to get the maximum result in practice. I hope I succeeded at least in part.

In this interdisciplinary study, Anthony Cerulli probes late- and postcolonial reforms in ayurvedic education, the development of the ayurvedic college, and the impacts of the college curriculum on ways that ayurvedic physicians understand and use the Sanskrit classics in their professional work today. His fieldwork in south India illuminates the nature of philology and ritual in the ayurvedic gurukula and showcases how knowledge is exchanged among students, teachers, and patients. The result, Cerulli shows, is that the Sanskrit classics are presented and applied differently in the college and gurukula, producing a variety of relationships with these texts among practitioners. By interrogating the politics surrounding the place of the Sanskrit classics in ayurvedic curricula, this book reveals a spectrum of views about the history and tradition of Ayurveda in modern India.

Social problems, like homelessness, substance abuse, and the health consequences of poverty, are encountered every day by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers. Like the public hospital, the EMS system is a key but misunderstood part of our system of last resort. Author Christopher Prener examines the forms of marginality that capture the reality of urban EMS work and showcases the unique view EMS providers have of American urban life. The rise of neighborhood stigma and the consequences it holds for patients who are assumed by providers to be malingering is critical for understanding not just the phenomenon of non- or sub-acute patient calls but also why they matter for all patients. This sense of marginality is a defining feature of the experience of EMS work and is a statement about the patient population whom urban EMS providers care for daily. Prener argues that the pre-hospital health care system needs to embrace its role in the social safety net and how EMSs' future is in community practice of paramedicine, a port of a broader mandate of pre-hospital health care. By leaning into this work, EMS providers are uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of community medicine. This book compiles research on Enterobacterales characterization concerning the presence of genes associated with virulence (adhesins; surface cellulose structures and curli; siderophores, e.g., enterobactin, aerobactin, and yersiniabactin; protectines; invasins or toxins), and, furthermore, bacterial-biofilm-associated phenotypes. Although not directly involved in pathogenicity, the acquisition of multiple antibiotic resistances strongly supports the success of opportunistic Enterobacterales pathogens in invasion, survival, and spread and markedly complicates the treatment of infections. Not only pathogens, but also commensal bacteria, considered harmless and part of the normal microbiota, are exposed to selection pressure and can be a reservoir of mobile genetic elements carrying antibiotic resistance genes. Therefore, the occurrence of drug-resistant bacteria within a commensal population and the possibility to exchange genetic material through horizontal gene transfer may represent a major health concern.

Malignant Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare and aggressive cancer, related to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress caused mainly by exposure to asbestos. Although this mineral has been banned for decades in many countries, epidemiologists predict the MM epidemic will last past 2040, raising many concerns in public health given its late diagnosis, dismal prognosis, and lack of current efficient therapies. To deal with this situation, important breakthroughs have recently been made in the understanding of MM's complex biology and the carcinogenic process of the different patterns of the disease. Examples of these include the development of new biomarkers and the deciphering of gene-environment interactions, molecular mechanisms of invasiveness, deregulated pathways, altered expression of miRNAs, DNA damage repair, or metabolic profile. From now on, MM's aggressive and chemoresistant character appears linked to a polyclonal malignancy, and heterogeneity in molecular alterations. Given these improvements, new therapeutic targets are being explored to solve the double challenge faced by clinicians. The first is to reduce tumor development and its wasting consequences as soon as possible, without resistance and with limited toxicity. The second is to stimulate the recognition of tumor cells by the induction of a specific immune response. This Special Issue will highlight all these aspects.
