Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-Faced) Companion Animals
Health and welfare issues of brachycephalic (flat-faced) animals are one of the most pressing problems facing companion animals right now. Dogs, in particular, are suffering from a 'brachycephalic crisis' resulting from a perfect storm where predispositions to an array of health issues are amplified by a population boom for certain brachycephalic breeds such as the French Bulldog and Pug. But yet, for many owners, these dogs represent the perfect companion: endearing personas and cute looks in a socially desirable package. So where is the truth in all of this? This book will equip veterinary professionals, animal welfare scientists, breeders and owners with the fuller story about brachycephalic health and welfare. The first half of the book provides the context of how and why we are in this crisis, offering in-depth historical, social, ethical, communication, nursing, welfare, epidemiological, genetics and international perspectives. The second half shifts towards the clinical arena, with chapters that cover the background, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the many unique healthcare needs of brachycephalic animals. Cutting-edge knowledge is shared on a range of disciplines including respiratory disease, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry, neurology, obesity, reproduction and anesthesia. With twenty chapters written by world-leading experts, lifetimes of experience and knowledge are condensed into the first book dedicated exclusively to brachycephaly in companion animals. This essential reference resource will inform, challenge and stimulate; it will open your mind to new opportunities for you to improve the welfare of brachycephalic animals by your personal and collective choices and actions. But prepare to be surprised: you may just find that your views on brachycephaly in companion animals will be changed forever.
Innovative Production Strategies for High-Quality, Traditional Pig Products
In a number of European countries (e.g., Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia, Poland), a portion of the pig sector is aimed at the production of traditional and certified products (e.g., PDO-Protected Designation of Origin, PGI-Protected Geographical Indication). Dry-cured ham is probably the most famous traditional pork product; however, typical pork products are produced in (and exported to) many countries worldwide. The meat used for producing these high-quality delicacies needs to be suitable for seasoning and dry-curing, and these characteristics are the result of complex interactions between the animal (breed, genotype, rearing condition, feeding regime, age and weight at slaughter, etc.) and the environment, without disregarding the importance of ethical attributes such as animal welfare and the environmental impact. This Special Issue focuses on all the innovative production strategies for pigs intended for high-quality, typical productions (in term of higher sustainability of the whole production chain, improvement of animal welfare, innovative feeding and farming techniques, reduction in environmental impact, improvement in meat and fat quality, etc.), with emphasis on PDOs, PGIs, and other recognized production schemes, and it is aimed at providing new insights for a wide range of stakeholders from different countries.

Mammalian Sexuality
There are more than 6000 species belonging to twenty-seven orders in the Class Mammalia. Comparative studies of this diverse and magnificent array of extant species provide valuable opportunities to formulate and test hypotheses concerning the evolution of reproduction. This is the first book to explore, in depth and breadth, the complex interrelationships that exist between patterns of mating behaviour and the evolution of mammalian reproductive anatomy and physiology. It focuses upon the role that copulatory and post-copulatory sexual selection have played during the evolution of the monotremes, marsupials and placental mammals, and examines the effects of sperm competition and cryptic female choice upon coevolution of the genitalia in the two sexes. In addition, due weight is also given to discussions of the modes of life of mammals, and to the roles played by natural selection and phylogeny in determining their reproductive traits.
Metabolic profiling of hyperinsulinemic horses
Insulin dysregulation mediates the increased risk for laminitis associated with the two most common equine endocrinopathies, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and the equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). This thesis aimed to describe the metabolic profile of horses with this condition to help elucidate the cause for the increased insulin production it elicits and possibly uncover some pathomechanisms leading to laminitis. Besides identifying metabolites correlated to the level of the insulin response to an oral glucose test, such as carnitine, arginine and DOPA, this project revealed the potential of such molecules in recognizing horses with insulin dysregulation without complex diagnostic tests. Additionally, it allowed to concretely quantify the reduction of the insulin response to oral carbohydrates following weight loss, while differentiating the respective metabolic impact of weight gain and worsened insulin dysregulation. Lastly, metabolites associated with subsequent laminitis were described. Altogether, the results provided new concepts for the identification of insulin dysregulation, supported an association between this condition and vascular dysfunction, helped distinguish the metabolic impact of weight variations from the effect of insulin dysregulation, and suggested that carnitine and arginine could be investigated as nutritional supplements to treat insulin dysregulation.
Pharmacological preconditioning and ischaemic postconditioning in experimental jejunal ischaemia in horses
Strangulating obstruction of the small intestine in the horse is associated with a high mortality rate. Although many intestinal lesions can be treated surgically, more effective strategies are needed to decrease the occurrence of complications related to the intestinal segments that are not amenable to intestinal resection. The aim of this PhD was to determine the feasibility and effect of two novel treatment modalities in equine small intestinal ischaemia. Therefore, ischaemic postconditioning and pharmacological preconditioning with lidocaine and xylazine were investigated in two experimental in vivo studies. By evaluating different variables for intestinal ischaemia reperfusion injury by use of histomorphology, immunohistochemistry and biochemical analysis, the results of this study demonstrate the applicability of these treatments in experimental small intestinal ischaemia in horses.

Pharmaco-toxicological characteristic of Iron(IV) clathrochelate complex. An analysis
Scientific Study from the year 2020 in the subject Veterinary medicine, grade: 500, language: English, abstract: The monograph summarizes for the first time the data of the literature and own preclinical and clinical studies of iron (IV) clatrochelate. Data on its physicochemical properties, acute and chronic toxicity, features of accumulation of iron in new rare valences in the form of clatrochelate are described. For the first time its antianemic activity is characterized. The scientific publication is intended for a wide range of scientists, teachers, graduate students, students of higher education institutions, veterinary specialists. An animal health is now regarded as one of the factors of the veterinary well-being in every country, so the issue of treating animals with pathological conditions and their prevention is given considerable attention by both scientists and veterinary practitioners. Uncontrolled usage of medicines cause an increase of toxic effects in human and animals organisms. In accordance with the guidelines of the preclinical study of drugs, every new drug must be evaluated for the following indicators: the toxicity of the bioassay to infusoria; the toxicity in laboratory animals after a single administration (acute toxicity); the cumulative properties; the toxicity in laboratory animals after long-term administration (chronic toxicity). The following study works with animal obduction and shows the methodology in pictures.

Comparative anatomy of head region bones of barking and sambar deer
The barking deer, also recognized as Indian Muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) is a cervid species, indigenous to South and South-east Asia has been classified on the IUCN red-list as the Least concern. The sambar deer, also called Sunda sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large cervid species that is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent, Southern China, and Southeast Asia has been categorized by the IUCN red-list as 'vulnerable' due to a decrease in their population year by year. This book describes the comparative morphology (gross, radiography, and computed tomography) of the skull of barking and sambar deer in detail. It also includes various important landmarks on the skull bones for tracking of nerves on the head region for regional anesthesia in both species.
Reproduction and Development in Annelida
This book is a concise informative elucidation of all aspects of reproduction and development in annelids covering from arenicola to tubifex. Annelids flourish between 4,900 m depth to 2,000 m altitude; some of them occur in unusual habitats like hydrothermal vents and subterranean aquatic system (stigobionts). A few have no gut and acquire adequate nutrients through osmotrophism and/or engaging symbiotic microbes. In the absence of exoskeleton to escape predation, the 17,000 speciose annelids have explored bewildering modes of reproduction; not surprisingly, 42-47% of them are brooders. With 13,000 species, polychaetes are gonochores but some 207 species of them are hermaphrodites. Clitellates are all hermaphrodites; of them, 76 species are parthenogens, of which 56 are earthworms.Regenerative potency of annelids ranges from an organ to an entire worm from a single 'seminal' segment. The head, tail and both together can be regenerated 21, 42 and 20 times, respectively. However, the potency is limited to 1% of polychaetes and Heterogamatic sex determination is reported to occur only in six polychaete species, although karyotype is known for 83 annelid species. In temperate polychaetes, a dozen neuroendocrines, arising mostly from the 'brain' regulates reproductive cycle. A complete chapter devoted to vermiculture, (i) recognizes the fast-growing candidate species, (ii) distinguishes 'layers' from 'brooders', (iii) indicates that the harvest of oligochaetes may reduce the input of nitrogenous fertilizer in the ricefield, and (iv) explores the scope for increasing wealth from waste.

Identity, Gender, and Tracking
Using in-depth interviews with veterinary students, Identity, Gender, and Tracking: The Reality of Boundaries for Veterinary Students explores the experience of enrollment in an educational program that tracks students based on the species of animals that they wish to treat. The identity of a veterinarian is one characterized by care; thus, students have to construct different definitions of care, creating a system of power and inequality. Tracking produces multiple boundaries for veterinary students, which has consequences not just for the veterinarian, but also for the treatment of animals. Written for administrators and students alike, Identity, Gender, and Tracking sheds light on how and why veterinary students construct their identities and end up in certain specializations.

Newcastle Disease Virus Infection in Chicken
Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) is a highly contagious pathogen and causes massive death rates in poultry. Our understanding of the free radicals pathophysiology of NDV is limited. To fill this gap, we present the findings of investigation on the pathological effect of NDV on vital organs of the chicken (Brain and liver). This books is divided into four chapters and it documents the 1) significant perturbations in the antioxidant defense system of the brain and liver of chicken during NDV infection 2) free radicals mediated immunopathological consequences which were gratified by the immunofluorescence studies 3) lower endogenous levels of vitamin E in the NDV infected animals. This book also describes the possible external supplementation of vitamin E to the infected birds for the improved antioxidant defense system, reduced viral titer, and improved life span of infected birds following pronounced immunity.

The Effect of Allogenic Cell Cultures on Type I Diabetic Rats
Scientific Study from the year 2020 in the subject Veterinary medicine, grade: 10, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the changes in the pancreas of rats with the introduction of alloxan, confirming histologically the presence of pathological processes characteristic of type I diabetes. Additionally, a cytogenetic analysis of rat cells in culture obtained from red bone marrow, adipose tissue and pancreas during subcultivation in the in vitro system was performed and their phenotypic characterization was given. Furthermore the histological changes in the pancreas of rats were analysed with the introduction of cell cultures obtained from different sources against experimental diabetes and studied the changes in the blood glucose of experimental animals with the transplantation of cellular material. Despite the shortcomings of the modern methods of treating animals with type I diabetes using insulin therapy, as well as the fact that pancreatic β-cell death is one of the important elements in the diabetes pathogenesis, new approaches to the treatment of this disease using cell technologies are being studied. Recent studies of β-cells in the in vitro system have shown that they have a fairly high regenerative capacity, but in the in vivo system with diabetes, these cells almost do not recover. The development of methods that can activate β-cell regeneration is an important area of the scientific research. To date, mainly red bone marrow is used as the source of stem cells for research, because this is the only tissue of the adult body that normally contains immature, undifferentiated and low-differentiated cells. However, adipose tissue is being increasingly used as an alternative source for stem cells, from which they can be isolated in significantly larger quantities using less invasive methods compared to using red bone marrow. It is worth noting that there are still a lot of unclear issues in the study of the pancreas regeneration ways, theref

Parasites of Cattle and Sheep
Understanding parasite biology and impact is essential when giving advice on parasite control in farm animals. In the first review devoted to parasites of domestic cattle and sheep alone, this book provides in-depth, focused advice which can be tailored to individual farms. It considers the impact of parasites, both as individual species and as co-infections, as well as epidemiological information, monitoring, and diagnostic procedures. Supported throughout by diagrams and photos to aid diagnosis, it also reviews the basis for control measures such as the responsible use of parasiticides, adaptive animal husbandry and other management practices. This book: focuses on common parasites of domestic sheep and cattle; places emphasis on understanding host responses and epidemiology so that the impact and seasonality of parasitism can be incorporated into advice and decision making; highlights the fundamental importance of the individual farm and farmer in assessing endemic parasitism and tailoring control options accordingly; and provides a comprehensive reference listing, including important historical citations, to underpin the content. An important resource for students, veterinarians and researchers of farm animal health, this book maintains a focus on ruminant parasitology in order to deliver evidence-based advice and also context for the application of basic research.
