The Management of Enclosed and Domesticated Deer
This is the first book devoted to international deer husbandry techniques for the growing industries of venison, velvet antler, and antler trophy production as well as long established extensive park systems for amenity. Written by world leaders in their specialised subjects, chapters shed light on widely differing management systems and the optimum design of deer farms, handling yards and fencing layouts. Moreover, readers will discover the requisites of good stockmanship and specialist veterinarians describe different diseases the deer may develop. Details on available treatments, the general biology of deer and an explanation of controversial ethics of velvet and trophy production complete this work.As deer farming has come of age this collection is timely. At fifty years the New Zealand deer industry carries one million animals with annual venison exports to America, Europe and growing antler markets in China and Korea. Chinese antler production is well-established and Asian reindeer husbandry even more ancient. In North America and Europe, deer are now being kept for antler trophies and amenity in many historic parks. This volume is a valuable resource for everyone researching deer management systems, be it practising veterinarians, deer farmers, park managers or agricultural and veterinary students.

Made to Order
Animal breeding has been complicated by persisting factors across species, cultures, geography, and time. In Made to Order, Margaret E. Derry explains these factors and other breeding concerns in relation to both animals and society in North America and Europe over the past three centuries. Made to Order addresses how breeding methodology evolved, what characterized the aims of breeding, and the way structures were put in place to regulate the occupation. Illustrated by case studies on important farm animals and companion species, the book presents a synthetic overview of livestock breeding as a whole. It gives considerable emphasis to genetics and animal breeding in the post-1960 period, the relationship between environmental and improvement breeding, and regulation of breeding as seen through pedigrees. In doing so, Made to Order shows how studying the ancient human practice of animal breeding can illuminate the ways in which human thinking, theorizing, and evolving characterize our interactions with all-natural processes.

Animal Welfare
Animal Welfare An Accessible Overview of the Concept of Sentience Throughout the Animal Kingdom and Why It Matters to Humans Animal Welfare explores the concept of sentience and the development of sentient minds throughout the animal kingdom. The work provides improved definitions and analysis of the ideas of sentience, cognition, and consciousness, along with evidence of advanced mental formulation in birds, fish, and invertebrates. Considerations between humans and animals are also discussed, such as outcome-based ethics in relation to humans' duties of care and the rights and wrongs of domestication. The work is divided into three parts and covers key topics such as: Specifics of animal sentience, from pain and suffering, to fear and dread, all the way to animals' social life and the comfort/joy/hope/despair they experience What we know about the sentience of different classes of animals in the waters, air, savannah/plains, and forests Considerations on human interactions based on animal sentience, including death (killing), animal farms, animals in laboratories, wild animals in captivity, and animals in sports and entertainment Analysis on what humans can learn from animals based on what we know about their varying levels of sentience Animal Welfare serves as an invaluable analysis of animal sentience for students, teachers, and professionals directly involved in the study, teaching, and applications of animal behavior, motivation, and welfare. Thanks to the wide-ranging implications of animal sentience, the work will also appeal to everyone with a broader interest in animal behavior and human/animal interactions.

Creating Wellbeing and Building Resilience in the Veterinary Profession
A Call to Life aims to help veterinary caregivers increase self-efficacy, decrease unnecessary suffering, and increase sustainability in their mission to support animal health around the world. The veterinary profession is powered by dedicated, bright, and selfless individuals. Unfortunately, the long-standing and dysfunctional culture in classrooms and practices around the world expects veterinary caregivers to be ready to sacrifice everything - their time, their health, their personal lives - in the name of being deemed qualified and 'worthy.' Integrating real-life stories from a range of veterinary caregivers with evidence-based theory, practical activities, discussion and reflection points, and insights drawn from the author's own experiences, the book empowers veterinarians by showing that they have the ability and the control to choose a healthier way forward for themselves and for their profession. It describes how to: Normalize the conversation around mental and emotional health challenges in caregiving environments Discuss and collaboratively create systemic solutions that promote healthier 'ecosystems' for vets to work within Develop the skills of reframing, mindfulness, and self-care strategy implementation supporting holistic veterinary well-being Collectively choose to shift the framework of professional conversations towards psychological safety, optimism, and purpose-driven experiences. Creating Wellbeing and Building Resilience in the Veterinary Profession: A Call to Life uniquely combines shared experiences (personal stories) with academic research into the contributing factors of compassion fatigue and how to counter these. Normalizing the conversation in the profession, it provides a wide array of possible solutions to build resilience and to shape a culture of collaboration and support where caregivers can flourish.

An Introduction to Pet Dental Care
Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases observed by small animal practitioners, and it is not uncommon for the veterinary technician to be the first line in oral health assessment and treatment. Despite this, current dentistry training for veterinary technicians and nurses is often very limited. This book explains the causes, consequences, prevention and treatment of pet dental diseases including periodontal disease, fractured teeth, tooth resorption, dental malocclusions, oral masses, jaw fractures, and other oral conditions. It covers: - Instruction in essential skills such as dental cleaning, charting, radiography, and equipment maintenance.- Advanced skills such as the administration of regional nerve blocks and periodontal treatments.- The aetiology and treatment of common oral conditions. Improving competence in veterinary dental skills benefits technicians, veterinary practices, owners and their pets. Explaining pet dental diseases in a relatable way, this book allows veterinary staff to relay important dental information to pet owners in a way they understand. Providing solutions to help prevent and manage pet dental diseases, it outlines treatment options, outcomes, and post-operative dental care.
Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment in Companion and Food Animals
The global antimicrobial resistance crisis has been the driver of several international strategies on antimicrobial stewardship. Despite their good intentions, such broad strategies are only slowly being implemented in real life. Antimicrobial resistance bacteria flow among humans and animals, and actions for fighting the problem must consider both sectors. Antimicrobial usage is one of the potential drivers for antimicrobial resistance. The usage of antibiotics concerning companion and food animals and antimicrobials is undoubtedly beneficial for the prevention of diseases and the improvement of livestock performance. Unfortunately, in veterinary medicine, which is challenged by a shortage of experts in key disciplines related to antimicrobial stewardship, there are few antimicrobial treatment guidelines and diagnostic tests are inferior compared to human microbiology, without providing enough valuable information, which makes it difficult to identify by whom, when, and how the antimicrobial products are used. The main aspects of antimicrobial resistance monitoring remain unsolved in both companion and food animals, the use of appropriate methods for collection of information at the animal and farm levels, and the choice of metrics of measurement of antimicrobial resistance and animal populations at risk.
Joey’s Legacy Volume Two
The Veterinary industry is one of the cleanest industries in the U.S. when it comes to the percentage of bad actors. While police departments seem to average about 15% bad cops compared to the 85% who work zealously and honestly to protect society, the percentage of bad actors in the Veterinary medicine field is remarkably low, averaging 2-5%.No one dislikes bad actor veterinarians more than the 95+% of the great veterinarians in the country dedicated to helping our pets and farm animals.Joey's Legacy: Seeking Truth and Integrity in Veterinary Medicine is about the small percentage of bad actors (the Bad Guys) and the victims they leave behind, heartbroken and guilt-ridden that they chose the wrong veterinarian to treat their beloved pets.As Big Pharma and the Pet Food Dynasty seek to overtake the veterinary industry, pushing drugs that often kill and toxic pet foods and flea collars, all in the cause of Big Money, the industry has changed over the past few decades. How would you like to check your child out of the hospital only to be told you must pay the $10,000.00 bill before they release your child, like being held hostage until the ransom is paid. Thankfully, this does not happen in the field of human medicine but is common in the field of veterinary medicine. Why do so many State Veterinary Boards never see a veterinarian they don't love regardless of stack-loads of complaints filed by innocent Pet Parents who lost Fido or KitKat due to a bad teeth cleaning. Why is human medical malpractice insurance $100,000.00 dollars per year... or more, but veterinary malpractice insurance is less than $1,000.00 per year?A message to the small percentage of bad actor vets and the State Veterinary Board Swamp: Joey's Legacy is coming after you.THE GIG IS UP!
