Laminitis

Remco,Sikkel  著
Ingram 出版
2020/11/28 出版

Laminitis. Too many horse owners are confronted with this disease one day. And when it happens to your horse, pony or donkey you will feel completely desperate to find him in so much pain. He is unable to walk. You will want nothing more but to help.Quick intervention can prevent a lot of suffering. This book explains precisely and comprehensively what happens in the horse's body, both just before and during laminitis. The latest scientific findings with regards to sugars, hormones, medications, underlying diseases such as PPID, treatment methods, toxins and stress all are extensively discussed. So too is the critical importance of good nutrition, housing, exercise and correct hoof care. This book offers practical solutions and simple preventive measures. The emphasis is on the very important role you play as the horse's owner. In short, after reading this book you will know how to help your beloved horse to recover and remain healthy.Additionally, 'Laminitis: understanding, cure, prevention' is a valuable resource for both veterinarians and hoof care providers. Unfortunately, many equine professionals often lack knowledge on this complex issue and laminitis is diagnosed too late or not even recognised at all. The commonly used treatments often prove ineffective because they are based on outdated ideas and theories, or because the focus is too much on the hooves only. This book aims to change that, bringing effective solutions through bringing the focus back on the whole horse.'Laminitis: understanding, cure, prevention' is an absolute must have for everyone who works with or cares for a laminitis prone horse, pony or donkey.

The present book provides up-to-date scientific, clinical and practical information of the most important pathogenic mycoplasmas in swine. Most emphasis has been placed on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, as this is economically the most important Mycoplasma sp. in swine. However, other pathogenic species like Mycoplasma hyorhinis, Mycoplasma hyosynoviae and Mycoplasma suis are discussed. Every chapter has been written by internationally renowned scientists and clinicians from all over the world; each with in depth knowledge, expertise and experience in the particular areas of swine mycoplasmas. In total, more than 40 persons have contributed as authors. Two independent reviewers and the editors have critically evaluated every chapter of the book, and original versions have been revised accordingly. This procedure should guarantee the evidence-based character of the book, the high scientific level and the practical relevance of the content. Veterinary Infection: Prevention and Control

Ryan,Jaxon  著
Ingram 出版
2020/09/01 出版

Infectious diseases of animals are a substantial hazard to animal health and welfare, with implications for agronomic health, food supply and economy. Changes in agricultural practices and global climate conditions are conducive to the spread of infectious diseases. Arthropod-borne diseases and zoonotic infections are on the rise. Zoonotic or phonetic infections pose not only a threat to animal health, but can adversely affect humans. Foot rot, anthrax, rabies, swine vesicular disease, glanders, etc. are veterinary infections. Certain diseases are specific to one type of stock, such as scrapie and classical swine fever, while others can affect all animals with a specific trait, such as foot and mouth disease which affects all cloven-hoofed animals. Infection prevention and control typically involves decreasing host exposure to pathogens, decreasing host susceptibility and increasing resistance to infectious pathogens. Immunization, proper feeding and nutrition, judicious use of antimicrobials and other drugs, management of underlying disease, adequate pain control, etc. are certain measures that can be adopted to prevent such infections. This book unravels the recent studies in the field of veterinary infections. Also included herein is a detailed explanation of the various strategies for the prevention and control of veterinary infectious diseases. The extensive content of this book provides the readers with a thorough understanding of the subject.

The Iacuc Administrator’s Guide to Animal Program Management

Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

The IACUC Administrator's Guide to Animal Program Management supports IACUC administrators who assist with developing, managing, and overseeing a program of animal care and animal use. It provides many options and possibilities for specific operational practices (e.g., how to build a well-functioning IACUC, what a functional protocol template looks like) to satisfy regulatory requirements. The material provided is a compilation of several years of Best Practices (BP) meetings among IACUC administrators across the country. The BP meetings included representatives from the NIH/OLAW, AAALAC, and the USDA, whose presence and dialogue assured the BP discussion met or exceeded all regulatory or accreditation minimum standards. BP meeting attendees from private, public, governmental, and academic organizations have helped to shape and develop the information offered herein. It is through the insight of several hundred colleagues--their successes as well as their failures--that the authors have distilled suggestions and considerations for your local animal care and use program. This handbook complements other useful references and manuals regarding programmatic function--it is not intended to replace them. The primary difference you will find is the transparent and open nature of describing processes that have been time tested and proven to help you and your organization satisfy the regulatory requirements.

The Ultimate Guide for Horses in Need

Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

A resource of astounding scope illustrating recommended management and retraining practices for horses and donkeys that have been ignored, neglected, abused, or starved. Whether given a second chance through purchase, adoption, or rescue, the horse in the "wrong" situation should have a chance to find his way to the "right one." Veterinarian Dr. Stacie Boswell's goal is to restore health and comfort to every horse in transition, and to help him learn how to function as the horse he is expected to be―from the Thoroughbred off the track to the grade pony from the field down the road. In her unparalleled reference, Dr. Boswell explains: Where they come from: The origins of the unwanted, neglected, or abused horse. Travel and intake: Safety, regulations, identification, and quarantine. Nutrition, dentistry, and colic: Body Condition Scoring (BCS), Refeeding Syndrome, nutrition, long-term weight management, colic prevention and treatment, and dealing with gastric ulcers. Vaccination and parasite management: Deworming, identifying and treating skin conditions, viruses, and respiratory diseases. Hoof care, lameness, and wounds: Evaluating hoof structure and the horse's movement, trimming and shoeing, abscesses, laminitis, arthritis, and bandaging. Birth control: Castration and mare management. Foal rescue: The birthing process, working with orphans, halter training, and hoof handling. The "down" horse: Identifying and treating underlying problems, rolling a horse, bed sores, slings, and quality of life considerations. Working in disaster scenarios: Preparedness, identification, transportation, communication, and first aid. Euthanasia: Compassionate guidelines, procedures, and aftercare. Unique training considerations: Coming into work according to BCS. How horses sense and respond: Equine vision, training principles, and working with the fearful horse. Developing a relationship with your rescue: Social integration, developing trust, overcoming fear, handling feet and legs, halter training adult horses, preparing a horse for medical care, groundwork, and riding. In Dr. Boswell has compiled hundreds of case studies highlighting the areas of concern in the horse "in need," and in these pages details proactive methods of handling common medical problems and health issues, from nutrition and dentistry to deworming and hoofcare to traumatic injury and emergency rescue scenarios. She explains the ways that, as a new horse is rehabilitated physically, specific training techniques can help him adapt to the positive changes in his care and environment. In the United States alone, it is estimated that almost 150,000 horses per year are "unwanted." This number grows exponentially when you consider horses worldwide. Horses that are old, injured, sick, unmanageable, or fail to meet expectations deserve to be treated with dignity and given every chance for a comfortable life in the company of humans. Dr. Boswell's book helps make this possible.

Vitrification of goat oocytes and their in-vitro fertilization

Ingram 出版
2020/03/01 出版

Reproduction is one of the most important physiological functions of the body. All living things come from eggs, at birth a female calf has about 1,33,000 Oocytes in her ovaries. As early as 18th century, physiologist realized this fact and initiated research uncovering these wastage of female gametes thus evolved in I.V.M.F.C and cloning. In case of goat, higher number of embryos could be produced by superovulation. Continuous supply of oocyte could overcome through cryopreservation of oocytes. Concerned to various freezing techniques for the cryopreservation of oocytes, vitrification technique is simple, less costly and less time consuming. This book will give a suitable time for vitrification during oocyte maturation and evaluate the vitrification protocol by subsequent I.V.F.in goat.

Review on Bovine Schistosomiasis and its Current Status and Public Health Importance in Et

Ingram 出版
2020/02/01 出版

Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Veterinary medicine, grade: 18, course: public health, language: English, abstract: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by snail intermediate hosts. It is one of the most wide spread zoonotic disease which is endemic in many developing countries of the tropics and sub tropics causing considerable loss in humans and animals. The disease affects rural communities particularly those who depend upon irrigation to support their agriculture. Currently it affects between 200 and 300 million people in around 74 countries. The great majority (80-85%) of schistosomiasis is found in sub-Saharan Africa. Schistosomiasis is caused by trematode worms of the genus Schistsoma that live in the alimentary tract, bladder, as well as hepatic and nasal veins of humans and animals. Effective transmission of schistosomiasis occurs when the schistosome parasites, the aquatic snail hosts and the human or animal definitive hosts meet in space and time in surface water. The pathological changes with the disease are attributed by the adult parasite, cercaria and the eggs of the parasite. Health education, chemotherapy, environmental and biological control as well as provision of clean water have an innumerable role in the control activity of the disease. The use of traditional medicines in the treatment of schistosomiasis are economically important and a growing concern. There are various types of plants having anti schistosomal and molluscicidal properties with minimal side effects used by developing countries and continuous to be used in the modern world. Phytoplacca dodecandora (Endod) is the most widely studied molluscicide in Ethiopia.

The Practice of Sheep Veterinary Medicine

Kym,Abbott  著
Ingram 出版
2018/12/19 出版

This book is intended to be a reference text for veterinarians who provide clinical services to sheep producers. It is directed first and foremost at Australian sheep-raising systems, but the approaches described herein will have wide application in all countries where sheep are raised under extensive grazing conditions. Most of the important conditions of sheep in Australia are relatively straightforward to diagnose, but the establishment of effective and economically sound control strategies is often the most difficult part of health management, particularly for those who are less familiar with sheep production systems. With six initial chapters focusing on providing readers with a basic understanding of the business and science underpinning sheep production, this book focuses its remaining chapters on reproduction and disease conditions, ordered largely on a systems basis. The book provides details about the way disease processes develop and manifest in sheep flocks, with numerous references for those who wish to read further. Thanks to the strengths of both its wool industry and its sheep meat industry, Australian sheep production is a profitable and fulfilling agricultural pursuit for a large number of farm owners. This book is intended to assist those who work in the industry to add to the profitability and efficiency of sheep production systems, the quality of sheep products and the welfare of the sheep in those systems.

Cannabis for Canines

Ronin Pub 出版
2018/07/15 出版

Dogs are wo-man's best friend. Dogs are family. We love them and they loves us back-unconditionally. Like we humans, dogs get ailments. They may experience anxieties and stress. As they age, dogs suffer aches and pains, just like we do. So we take our canine friend to the local veterinarian to tend to their ailment. Often, the Vet prescribes medication-a powerful pharmaceutical, which is usually effective, although not always. Pharmaceuticals, like opioids, can be addictive and have other worrisome side-effects. Now a safer alternative is emerging-cannabis for canines. Administration of cannabis and cannabis-based extracts to benefit over-all health and well-being are used by humans to treat an array of ailments. There is much to suggest that cannabis may benefit dogs as well. Many dog-moms and dads are giving cannabis potions to their pooches-with good results. The problem is that as a result of cannabis being classified as a Schedule 1 Drug by federal law since the 1930s, there has been little research. Veterinarian have no training in cannabis therapeutics and risk "losing their license" if they recommend it. And, until recently, cannabis was not readily available to the law-abiding dog owner. CANNABIS FOR CANINES explains cannabis therapeutics: how they can soothe many physical and psychological conditions and be used in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications, as well as preventatively. CANNABIS FOR CANINES describes cannabinoids, which are chemicals in the plant, and how they interact with a dog's endocannabinoid system to soothe their distress. Readers learn the importance of close observation and how to track conditions as a way to check for effectiveness of the treatment and the importance of keeping their Vet in the loop, especially if the dog is taking a pharmaceutical. Precautions are included. CANNABIS FOR CANINES is a fun, informative read of interest to dog owners and canine professionals.

Veterinary Science

James,Yeates  著
2018/04/22 出版

Every year billions of animals, from housecats to racehorses to pythons, are treated by veterinarians. The use of veterinary science to treat the health of animals has a long history; for the past five centuries it has developed as our understanding of animals' fundamental biology, pathology, and pharmacology has grown. Rapid global changes expected in the twenty-first century will require the profession to respond proactively, embracing new challenges and opportunities. James Yeates, Chief Veterinary Officer of the RSPCA, introduces the field of veterinary science, covering the history of its scientific and clinical aspects from early practices to recent challenges such as the outbreak of BSE and antibiotic resistance, and considering the differences between human medicine and veterinary medicine. Analyzing the key roles played by diagnosis, treatment, and prevention with regard to the health of farm animals and pets, he relates this to wider aspects concerning public health, such as zoonoses (diseases that jump from animals to humans). Yeates also covers recent "One Health" approaches involving the health of both humans and animals, seen as synergistic, and discusses the challenges for the future of veterinary medicine, including the ethical dilemmas in balancing the interests of owners and animals when they do not coincide. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
