Reflections of the Heart
Growing up, Alana Jenkins always knew she wanted to be a veterinarian like her father. Her intelligence and perseverance paved her way through her studies until she was accepted to Oklahoma State University of Veterinary College. Alana spent four years studying and experiencing many different, interesting cases until she graduated in May of 2009. After graduation, she spent a year interning at a small animal emergency hospital in Bowie, Maryland. She then moved to Spiro, Oklahoma to practice for another small animal hospital for a year before moving to Frisco, Texas. Full of wit and humor, this book is a compilation of journal entries, e-mails, postings and letters written to her family while Alana attended veterinary school, and it follows her through her first five years in practice. It holds interesting cases she assisted with, conversations with professors and other veterinarian colleagues, family moments, the adventures of Jinx and Xander, and personal struggles she had to overcome. 06 Sep 2007 "I am now completely a vet student. I conquered surgery today, even though it took me three hours to neuter half a dog and work with my partner through the other half. We double and triple checked our suture ties, and nothing was bleeding when we were done ... And tomorrow I actually get to enter the abdomen. And see real organs ... Bring on the spays"
Feeding Dogs Dry Or Raw? The Science Behind The Debate
From the vet health professional to canine professional to the avid canine enthusiast, Feeding Dogs is a fascinating, at times shocking and utterly essential portrayal of canine nutrition today. With a clear and tangible passion for the subject but with an entertaining, highly readable style, Dr Conor Brady forensically translates the available research on a great variety of topics, detailing for us not only what dogs should eat but what they are currently being fed. Crucially, modern diet strategies are linked to many of the diseases that plague our pets today, including obesity, cancer, pancreatitis and bloat. As the scientific and corporate tricks reveal themselves, the fantasy of a 'complete' diet falls away, replaced with the knowledge that formulating a balanced dog diet by ourselves is not only uncomplicated but utterly essential to their health and longevity. With more than 500 pages and 1200 references, Feeding Dogs is the most thorough examination of the canine nutrition debate to date. Over four large sections, it provides: Section 1: An examination of what the dog consumes when left to his own devices and the biological and physiological machinery that facilitates that process.Section 2: A thorough presentation of the major issues with ultra-processed kibble including the effects of excessive carbohydrates, insufficient protein, erratic nutrient contents and hazardous microbiology on the health of the dog. All these chapters will be a first for most vets. Also, for the first time, the scientific evidence in support of raw feeding is collated including head-to-head studies that examine both dry and raw-fed dog populations and the effects of poor nutrition on behaviour. Section 3: A staggering reveal of the problems in the veterinary sector, from the gross lack of adequate nutritional training and regulation of the pet food sector to the pseudoscience that is currently being fed to us by the industry. Section 4: An expansive description of what might constitute the ideal canine diet might look like. From a fascinating dissection of what balance means to a thorough exploration of what ingredient and why, Dr Conor Brady presents new insights that will keep both amateur and raw-pro gripped to the end (and what an end!). Each chapter comes with a complete bibliography and handy take-home points. Finally! A well-written, well-referenced, thorough examination of the raw dog food debate. Dr. Brady provides a detailed summary of all the issues, leaving the reader well-educated and ready to engage in a knowledgable converation with raw-ignorant or naive pet professionals looking for more information. A fantastic gift for your favourite veterinarian.Dr. Karen Becker, DVM "In this masterfully researched and written expos矇, Conor Brady details the raw truth about canine nutrition; why dry dog food is so damaging, how modern research is designed to sell product, never to find truth, and the enormous benefits that only a fresh raw and whole food diet can provide. A valuable addition to the serious raw feeder's library." Dr. Ian Billinghurst, DVM, best-selling author of Give Your Dog a Bone This remarkable book is the first of its kind. Researched comprehensively and meticulously detailed, it remains pleasantly readable and credible to the academic and home raw food enthusiast alike. It is a must for everyone with even a passing interest in species-appropriate nutrition for dogs.Dr. Nick Thompson, DVM, Founder of the Raw Feeding Vet Society

Innovative Production Strategies for High-Quality, Traditional Pig Products
In a number of European countries (e.g., Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Slovenia, Croatia, Poland), a portion of the pig sector is aimed at the production of traditional and certified products (e.g., PDO-Protected Designation of Origin, PGI-Protected Geographical Indication). Dry-cured ham is probably the most famous traditional pork product; however, typical pork products are produced in (and exported to) many countries worldwide. The meat used for producing these high-quality delicacies needs to be suitable for seasoning and dry-curing, and these characteristics are the result of complex interactions between the animal (breed, genotype, rearing condition, feeding regime, age and weight at slaughter, etc.) and the environment, without disregarding the importance of ethical attributes such as animal welfare and the environmental impact. This Special Issue focuses on all the innovative production strategies for pigs intended for high-quality, typical productions (in term of higher sustainability of the whole production chain, improvement of animal welfare, innovative feeding and farming techniques, reduction in environmental impact, improvement in meat and fat quality, etc.), with emphasis on PDOs, PGIs, and other recognized production schemes, and it is aimed at providing new insights for a wide range of stakeholders from different countries.
Rvt & Veterinary Assistant Job Aid
This is my personal work and tool I use to help support me with my tasks and duties as a registered veterinary technician (RVT). Anyone who has worked directly with me knows about my pocket brain. I have shared and exchanged information in this small book to aid myself in patient care as well as support others who may have struggled and/or needed similar information to excel in their daily duties. The original book was created in 1999 but was lost. I restarted this book in 2006 as I felt the absence of this vital tool while on the floor in the clinical setting. Many have suggested that I turn it into a book so that more can benefit from it. It is a combination of things I have learned, researched, looked up, and experienced in my position as an RVT. I see this growing and adjusting with our role as veterinary technicians and assistants as a result of ongoing advances in care for our furry friends. This is just the start of volumes to come.

Mammalian Sexuality
There are more than 6000 species belonging to twenty-seven orders in the Class Mammalia. Comparative studies of this diverse and magnificent array of extant species provide valuable opportunities to formulate and test hypotheses concerning the evolution of reproduction. This is the first book to explore, in depth and breadth, the complex interrelationships that exist between patterns of mating behaviour and the evolution of mammalian reproductive anatomy and physiology. It focuses upon the role that copulatory and post-copulatory sexual selection have played during the evolution of the monotremes, marsupials and placental mammals, and examines the effects of sperm competition and cryptic female choice upon coevolution of the genitalia in the two sexes. In addition, due weight is also given to discussions of the modes of life of mammals, and to the roles played by natural selection and phylogeny in determining their reproductive traits.
Bone Graft and Biomaterials in Small Animal Surgery
Delayed union, malunion, nonunion therapy, osteomyelitis, arthrodesis, pseudoarthrosis and bone defects are problems encountered in orthopedics. Along with regulation of reduction and stable fixation, auxiliary measures such as the use of bone graft or bone graft materials are very important in most cases. Bone graft materials usually have one or more components. These components are an osteoconductive matrix that provides a scaffold for new bone growth, osteoinductive proteins that support the mitogenesis of undifferentiated cells, and osteogenic cells that can form bone in the appropriate environment. Autologous bone is considered the "gold standard" for stimulating bone repair and regeneration, but can be found in limited quantities and the material collection procedure may result in complications. Bone graft materials can be used in place of autologous bone graft or it can be enhanced by adding to the existing amount of autologous bone graft. In this book, it is aimed to examine bone graft and graft materials available in orthopedic surgery.
Recycling of Japanese Quail Hatchery Waste in Their Breeder Diets
Feeding of quail is a major factor in quail production since the feed constitutes over 70 to 75 per cent of the total cost of production of quail. The fast growing quail industry, their higher nutritional requirement, comparatively poor feed efficiency, short supply of ingredients, increase in prices of most of the feed ingredients result in high cost of Japanese quail production.Under present conditions, a newer search becomes a necessity to discover at least a few feed ingredients which can either partly or wholly replace the favoured feed stuffs so that the production cost of quail is reduced. Fish meal which is the commonest animal protein supplement used in livestock feed could be replaced by animal by-products such as meat meal, blood meal, poultry by-product and hatchery by-product meal. Even if it is assumed that consequent poor plane of nutrition will reduce the performance, there could be a favourable economic trade-off in reduced production cost as a result of lower feed costs. In this context, there has been growing interest in utilization of hatchery waste.

Metabolic profiling of hyperinsulinemic horses
Insulin dysregulation mediates the increased risk for laminitis associated with the two most common equine endocrinopathies, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and the equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). This thesis aimed to describe the metabolic profile of horses with this condition to help elucidate the cause for the increased insulin production it elicits and possibly uncover some pathomechanisms leading to laminitis. Besides identifying metabolites correlated to the level of the insulin response to an oral glucose test, such as carnitine, arginine and DOPA, this project revealed the potential of such molecules in recognizing horses with insulin dysregulation without complex diagnostic tests. Additionally, it allowed to concretely quantify the reduction of the insulin response to oral carbohydrates following weight loss, while differentiating the respective metabolic impact of weight gain and worsened insulin dysregulation. Lastly, metabolites associated with subsequent laminitis were described. Altogether, the results provided new concepts for the identification of insulin dysregulation, supported an association between this condition and vascular dysfunction, helped distinguish the metabolic impact of weight variations from the effect of insulin dysregulation, and suggested that carnitine and arginine could be investigated as nutritional supplements to treat insulin dysregulation.
Pharmacological preconditioning and ischaemic postconditioning in experimental jejunal ischaemia in horses
Strangulating obstruction of the small intestine in the horse is associated with a high mortality rate. Although many intestinal lesions can be treated surgically, more effective strategies are needed to decrease the occurrence of complications related to the intestinal segments that are not amenable to intestinal resection. The aim of this PhD was to determine the feasibility and effect of two novel treatment modalities in equine small intestinal ischaemia. Therefore, ischaemic postconditioning and pharmacological preconditioning with lidocaine and xylazine were investigated in two experimental in vivo studies. By evaluating different variables for intestinal ischaemia reperfusion injury by use of histomorphology, immunohistochemistry and biochemical analysis, the results of this study demonstrate the applicability of these treatments in experimental small intestinal ischaemia in horses.
In vitro and in vivo development of a topical drug for the treatment of equine skin cancer - based on naturally occurring and synthetically modified substances in plane bark
Equine sarcoids (ES) and equine malignant melanoma (EMM) are among the tumors affecting horses diagnosed most frequently. Both cutaneous neoplasms can be a significant cause of economic losses, morbidity and mortality in the animals. The treatment of equine skin cancer can be challenging and established, evidence-based therapies resulting in sustained tumor regression are rare. The pentacyclic, lupane-type triterpenes betulinic acid (BA) and betulin can be isolated from many botanical sources, predominantly from the bark of white birch and plane trees. In addition to various biological properties, they have gained attention mainly due to their anticancer features. Within the framework of the current PhD project, the compounds BA, BA derivative NVX-207, and betulin derivative betulinyl-bis-sulfamate were assessed in various in vitro and in vivo studies for their potential as a topical therapy for ES and EMM. In conclusion, the results generated from cell culture experiments, skin permeation assays and studies in the target species are promising. Further advancement of the investigational medicinal products studied herein could lead to an effective topical and marketable, novel drug which helps to relieve suffering and, consequently, improve the welfare of equine skin cancer patients.

No One Should Die of Rabies
This book is about the victory of science, and yet, the failure of our system to deliver its benefits to the needy, causing more than 55,000 deaths year after year due to rabies. Why should someone die of rabies when we have all the means to protect each life? Why do developing countries still suffer when developed countries have largely eliminated the disease? Although rabies is incurable, and once contracted equals to a death sentence, it can be effectively prevented with an inexpensive vaccine. These questions, and many more, haunt those whose loved ones are exposed to rabies and yet cannot find clear answers, leading to panic and anxiety. Even medical professionals are not well versed with latest recommendations and methods for dealing with each patient's unique condition. The abundance of half-baked and misleading information causes further confusion and mismanagement in a time when urgency is crucial. Each rabies death is a failure of our knowledge-sharing and health-care systems. This book contains easy access to medically correct, evidence-based information to aid both doctors and patients in informed decision-making.The author, a doctor and a top writer on Quora - the popular knowledge sharing platform - has made the whole subject easy to understand and interesting to read, with to-the-point answers and without academic jugglery.
Poultry Health
Poultry are a major source of valuable high-quality protein for much of the world's population, so food security is heavily dependent on maintaining poultry health. They are also increasingly important specialist hobby animals as backyard flocks. Despite this, veterinarians specializing in the care and health of these important domestic animals are few and far between, and many vets in small animal practice have little real experience of poultry health management and disease. Providing a comprehensive overview, this new handbook plugs that gap with 46 chapters of practical and accessible poultry health and management. The book: Covers the poultry industry, basic avian biology, infectious and non-infectious diseases and their agents, infection control, and disease investigation and legislationIncludes full color images for ease of identification and diagnosis, in addition to practical guides to disease preventionConsiders areas of increasing global importance, such as antimicrobial resistance.Written by international experts, this book forms a valuable illustrated resource for veterinary professionals, veterinary students, or those entering the poultry industry.
A Paw Partnership
A Paw Partnership charts a path toward hope and healing through partnerships between pet parents and the professionals who care for their pets. Neha Taneja knew the statistics. From her vantage point as veterinary practice manager, she'd watched the industry take its toll on her peers. Now she, too, was on the brink of burnout. By stepping away from the profession, Taneja found the compelling perspective offered in A Paw Partnership: How the Veterinary Industry is Poised to Transform Over the Next Decade.Through deeply personal storytelling, A Paw Partnership diagnoses an ailing industry's symptoms: For over-scheduled pet care professionals, the buffer between the beloved patient who died on the operating table and the next patient on the schedule may be little more than a five minute window and an exam room door.Doctors come out of veterinary school and medical school equally in debt. But the average salary of a veterinarian equals that of a department store manager.Without the systems and support they need, pet care providers risk burnout, compassion fatigue, depression, and suicide.
