Convenience Orientation in Corporate Crime
This book addresses corporate wrongdoing as a criminal phenomenon driven by convenience. Corrective recovery triggers include crime detection, corporate scandal, whistleblowing, and bottom-up change management. While compliance refers to meeting legal and other formal obligations, conformance refers to meeting and potentially exceeding societal and other informal norms and obligations. Lack of conformance tends to have immediate and serious consequences when revealed. People react when corporations pollute rivers, do business with authoritarian regimes, provide favors to government officials, look another way at money laundering, and commit other forms of wrongdoing that might never end up in the criminal justice system. People express their reactions in social media, in the press, and in the street by demonstrations.Corporate compliance and conformance programs require monitoring, auditing, corrective actions, and system modifications or redesign to prevent future problem behavior. Window-dressing by symbol change rather than substance change does not work anymore. Often, deviant executives need to be replaced after honest accounts of wrongdoing, where an account refers to a statement made by the entity to explain negative behavior that has become subject to inquiry by stakeholders and others. Denial, justification, excuse, apology, scapegoating, victimization, crusading, or other explanatory attempts should be avoided. The contribution of this book to the literature is to present a range of corrective recovery responses that help reduce crime convenience.
Bayesian A/B Decision Models
Bayesian A/B Decision Models encapsulates J Christopher Westland's deep expertise in algorithmic decision-making, honed through years of experience in specialized fields like auditing and serving as an expert witness in computing damages for corporate and industrial legal cases. While traditional statistical methods provide valuable insights, they often fall short of capturing the complexities of real-world scenarios that require sophisticated decision-making. Enter the Bayesian A/B decision model -- a powerful alternative that offers the flexibility and adaptability essential for navigating the intricate demands of consultancy and legal expert roles.Westland has found the versatility of Bayesian A/B models to be particularly transformative, enabling him to respond effectively to diverse and dynamic requests for detailed analytical reports. This approach allows for the delivery of precise financial analyses and outcomes that are highly tailored and often beyond the reach of traditional methods. In the high-stakes arenas of legal and corporate deliberations, where the accuracy and adaptability of statistical analysis can be the tipping point, this advantage has proven invaluable. In Bayesian A/B Decision Models, Westland extends the application of Bayesian A/B testing across a wide array of fields, including healthcare, marketing, and finance, as well as in more specialized sectors where traditional A/B testing and Frequentist approaches may be insufficient due to their limitations. The book features a comprehensive technical appendix with complete computer code for all examples discussed, offering readers practical tools that can be customized and implemented in their work.Whether you're an experienced statistician, an emerging analyst, or a professional exploring the potential of Bayesian A/B testing, this book provides a thorough overview and detailed applications that highlight the unique benefits of this innovative statistical approach.

Conflict Resilience
Two former Harvard faculty--one an internationally-recognized negotiator and conflict management expert from Harvard Law, the other a leading behavioral neurologist and cutting-edge scientist from Harvard Med--join forces to introduce conflict resilience: the radical act of sitting in and growing from conflict to break the bad habits that sabotage our politics, workplaces, and most important relationships. Conflict is getting the better of us.From our homes and community centers to C-Suites and Congress, disagreements are happening everywhere, with increasing frequency, and are being treated like zero-sum games that allow little margin for error and even less room for productive conversations. This puts a tremendous and untenable strain on our most important relationships and institutions.Unable or unwilling to negotiate conflict with skill, we ignore it or avoid it for as long as possible; when we are forced to face it, we escalate everyday disagreements and temporary flare-ups as if they're life-and-death. Neither approach addresses underlying issues, promotes stronger relationships, or yields satisfying results. But there is a solution: a combined skillset and mindset that Bob Bordone calls "conflict resilience"--the ability to sit genuinely with and grow from disagreement. In this powerful, hopeful book, he and renowned neurologist Joel Salinas, MD, combine the inner mechanics of conflict--literally what's going on in our bodies and our brains during moments of distress--with a groundbreaking three-step framework for how to navigate it: NAME (& dig deep)EXPLORE (& be brave)COMMIT (& own the conflict)In a time of increasing polarization, where consensus, agreement, and problem-solving can sometimes feel elusive, Conflict Resilience provides practical solutions to a common dilemma: How do you handle disagreements and differences with integrity while finding a way to create strong, deep, and lasting relationships?Conflict Resilience is not another book about conflict resolution, nor is it about problem solving. Conflict Resilience combines practical applications of advanced conflict management and study of the human brain to teach anyone how to turn conflict and negotiation into an act of union. This book provides the most cutting-edge and scientifically-grounded tools for driving agreement when possible and for empowering you to disagree better when the differences cut deep and the relationships matter most. This is a chance to bring people together, and an invitation to radically transform how we interact with our friends and families, our co-workers, our students, and our neighbors--anyone with whom we find ourselves in disagreement.

Dare to Think Differently
A Harvard Business School professor's guide to thinking about thinking, using the creative power of the unconscious. Gerald Zaltman's pioneering research methods for understanding the unconscious desires of customers are used by companies around the world. Dare to Think Differently draws on the same groundbreaking methods to explain the deep and innovative thinking used by highly successful executives. Reflecting emerging viewpoints in neuroscience, Zaltman contends that multiple forces, not just a brain, collaborate to produce a mind. Highly effective decision-makers are able and willing to go beyond their conscious thinking and surface powerful, creative, unconscious thoughts and feelings. They candidly ask whether what they feel they "know" is actually warranted, opening their minds to new alternatives. With this book, Zaltman presents six techniques to tap into the creative power of the unconscious: serious playfulness, befriending ignorance, asking the right discovery questions, chasing your curiosity, panoramic thinking, and using the "voyager outlook." These research-based techniques improve decision-making and go beyond the existing literature on "thinking smarter." This book's insights emerge from a large number of one-on-one in-depth interviews with senior leaders around the globe, reinforced with research findings from scientific literatures. Mirroring Zaltman's Harvard Business School classroom practice, each chapter opens with a practical-thinking exercise that helps readers surface the mental processes and biases that unconsciously close minds and constrict thinking. This creative surfacing is the crucial foundation for any leader operating in a complex, uncertain environment, who needs unconventional solutions to challenging problems.
The No Club
In this "long overdue manifesto on gender equality in the workplace," (Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit), The No Club offers a timely call and an action plan to unburden women from work that goes unrewarded. The No Club started when four women, crushed by endless to-do lists, banded together to get their work lives under control. Working harder than ever, they still trailed behind their male colleagues. And so, they vowed to say no to requests that pulled them away from the work that mattered most to their careers. Their over-a-decade-long journey and subsequent, groundbreaking research reveals that women everywhere are unfairly burdened with "non-promotable work," a tremendous problem we can--and must--solve. All organizations have work that no one wants to do: planning the office party, screening interns, attending to that time-consuming client, or simply helping others with their work. A woman, most often, takes on these tasks. In study after study, the original "No Club"--professors Linda Babcock (bestselling author of Women Don't Ask), Brenda Peyser, Lise Vesterlund, and Laurie Weingart--document that women are disproportionately asked and expected to do this work. The imbalance leaves women overcommitted and underutilized as companies forfeit revenue, productivity, and top talent. The No Club walks through how any woman can rebalance her workload, empowering individuals to make savvy decisions about the work they take on. The authors also illuminate how organizations can reassess how they assign and reward work to level the playing field. With hard data, personal anecdotes from women of all stripes, self- and workplace-assessments for immediate use, and innovative advice from the authors' consulting with Fortune 500 companies, this book will forever change the conversation about how we advance women's careers and achieve equity in the 21st century.
Business School and the Noble Purpose of the Market
The intellectual foundation for the next generation of business leaders Today's business schools were designed for a world that no longer exists. Capitalism raised the standard of living for billions of people over the past 150 years, but is now causing systemic challenges it is unable to address, including climate change and inequality. And yet, business schools continue to teach ideas that are making things worse: elevating the primacy of shareholder profits above the interests of employees, the environment, and society; viewing government as an intrusion on the free market rather than an arbiter of its proper functioning; and promoting unlimited economic growth despite the devastating environmental and social consequences. Business schools cannot simply drop an elective into their curriculum to address these challenges. We must rethink the faulty foundations. Business School and the Noble Purpose of the Market explains the intellectual foundation MBA students, faculty, and administrators need to reform capitalism and restore its noble purpose for the 21st century. Many business students are in fact seeking this kind of education and frustrated that they are not getting it from their professors. This book will fill in gaps in their education, equipping them with the models and mindset to rethink shareholder capitalism and serve society's needs. Business faculty and administrators will find a practical program for amending curriculum and pedagogy, changing student and faculty rewards, and bringing a new spirit and sensibility to the business school.
The Measure of Progress
Why do we use eighty-year-old metrics to understand today's economy? The ways that statisticians and governments measure the economy were developed in the 1940s, when the urgent economic problems were entirely different from those of today. In The Measure of Progress, Diane Coyle argues that the framework underpinning today's economic statistics is so outdated that it functions as a distorting lens, or even a set of blinkers. When policymakers rely on such an antiquated conceptual tool, how can they measure, understand, and respond with any precision to what is happening in today's digital economy? Coyle makes the case for a new framework, one that takes into consideration current economic realities. Coyle explains why economic statistics matter. They are essential for guiding better economic policies; they involve questions of freedom, justice, life, and death. Governments use statistics that affect people's lives in ways large and small. The metrics for economic growth were developed when a lack of physical rather than natural capital was the binding constraint on growth, intangible value was less important, and the pressing economic policy challenge was managing demand rather than supply. Today's challenges are different. Growth in living standards in rich economies has slowed, despite remarkable innovation, particularly in digital technologies. As a result, politics is contentious and democracy strained. Coyle argues that to understand the current economy, we need different data collected in a different framework of categories and definitions, and she offers some suggestions about what this would entail. Only with a new approach to measurement will we be able to achieve the right kind of growth for the benefit of all.
