Advancing Cloud and Data Infrastructure Markets
The World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives underscored today's unprecedented generation and flow of digital data and noted that much of the value remains untapped. To realize the enormous potential, data need to be supported by technologically advanced infrastructure to capture, analyze, share, and use them efficiently and effectively to benefit economies and societies. Cloud and data infrastructure presents the technological means to enable these processes, but the markets for these services are largely located in high-income countries. Countries with limited access to affordable services will lag in the ability to harness at scale the advanced technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, and to realize the potential corresponding social and economic gains. Advancing Cloud and Data Infrastructure Markets: Strategic Directions for Low- and Middle- Income Countries is part of a joint World Bank-IFC effort to support countries on their path to developing these markets. This report analyzes the key drivers of cloud and data infrastructure growth in these settings. It examines the business models, policies, and regulatory environment shaping the market trends as data from public and private sectors migrate to the cloud, and it explores the challenges in attracting investments. The report notes that although there is no one-size-fits all solution, essential elements to foster an enabling environment include bold vision and decisive government action to provide the following: 1.Stable business environments; technically skilled workforces; clear and supportive regulatory landscapes; and resilient, reliable, and affordable energy and broadband infrastructure 2.Stimulus for demand by digitalizing public services and migrating them to the cloud, signaling trust and confidence in cloud-enabled services and encouraging domestic businesses to follow suit 3.Streamlined measures to shorten the time from concept to launch of cloud infrastructure 4.Regulations and incentives to reduce the environmental footprint of cloud and data infrastructure, including renewable energy generation and efficient utilization of physical space at the design stage. Public and private stakeholders working together will expedite the ability of all countries and economies to successfully harness the transformative benefits of the cloud to help realize the goal of a world without poverty on a livable planet.

Emerging Multinationals from Asia and Europe
This is the first book that provides a comprehensive inter-regional comparison of Asian and European multinationals from large (China and Russia) and medium-sized (Taiwan) emerging markets. Utilizing novel findings of the top-notch theoretical research on internationalization of emerging market multinational enterprises, the book shows selected empirical evidence that some emerging multinationals from the respective countries have successfully nurtured their competitive advantages by an effective synthesis of both globalization and domestic market benefits. Multinational enterprises from emerging markets have become an essential part of the world economy in the twenty-first century. The book introduces distinctive examples of emerging market multinationals from Asia and Europe that are no longer simple suppliers to the world-famous brand firms from developed countries. The book is a rarity in that it attempts to link the micro-analysis of specific features and strategies of emerging multinationals with the macro-analysis of foreign direct investment and global value chain participation of the respective countries. The book is valuable for both scholars and students in the fields of international business, international economics, and international political economy as well as for businesspeople aiming to enhance their understanding of the heterogeneity and complexity of multinationals from emerging markets.
Urban Lives
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license. It is free to read at Oxford Academic and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. The past 200 years have witnessed revolutionary changes in living conditions for most people in the Global North. While the broad outline of these processes is well known through extensive research at the macro level, we still know very little about their micro-level foundations, largely due to the lack of appropriate data in most countries. Through the lens of a Swedish industrial city, Landskrona, Urban Lives looks at economic and demographic change at the micro level of individuals and families to understand the societal transformations that profoundly changed people's lives during the twentieth century. These societal transformations--coinciding with industrialization, post-industrialization, and the emergence and culmination of the welfare state--encompassed groundbreaking advancements in living standards, a relocation of rural populations to urban hubs, and significant alterations in the fabric of everyday working life. Including an original data infrastructure, the book follows individuals and families in Landskrona across generations, and situates them in these broader social, institutional, and environmental contexts. Each chapter provides novel insights into the micro-level foundations of long term economic-demographic processes, and covers important research questions related to health, family, migration, and residential segregation. Original and comprehensive, Urban Lives offers an examination of twentieth-century demographic, social, and economic history, illustrating how personal choices and behavior were shaped by social transformation.
Theory of Macroeconomic Hysteresis
This book deals with the mathematical theory of macroeconomic hysteresis, which is the theory of aggregation of microeconomic hysteresis. Microeconomic sunk cost hysteresis is usually represented by relatively simple hysteresis loops with no discrete memory of past economic shocks. It turns out that macroeconomic aggregation leads to the formation of complex multibranch hysteresis with discrete memory of past economic shocks. Consequently, the macroeconomic aggregation of microeconomic hysteresis results in the emergence of new economic phenomena. In the book, the basic properties of macroeconomic hysteresis are mathematically studied. It is demonstrated that certain important properties of macroeconomic hysteresis (such as history-dependent branching, erasure effects of some past economic shocks, geometric features of macroeconomic hysteresis loops, etc.) are insensitive to specific structures of microeconomic hysteresis subject to aggregation. This suggests that the above properties may be viewed as universal. Furthermore, it is pointed out that these aggregation models have the prediction power of future macroeconomic branching, which may be employed for the prediction of future economic evolution.
Making Sense of Chaos
From a pioneer in the field of complexity science and chaos theory, a plan for solving the world's most pressing problems "Farmer convincingly argues that by using big data and today's more powerful computers, we can build more realistic models and simulations of the global economy. . . . Farmer's vision will undoubtedly be significant in how economics evolves."--Tej Parikh, Financial Times, "Best New Books on Economics" "Both a manifesto for a revolution in economics and a memoir of an unusual career."--Ed Ballard, Wall Street Journal We live in an age of increasing complexity--an era of accelerating technology and global interconnection that holds more promise, and more peril, than any other time in human history. The fossil fuels that have powered global wealth creation now threaten to destroy the world they helped build. Automation and digitization promise prosperity for some, unemployment for others. Financial crises fuel growing inequality, polarization, and the retreat of democracy. At heart, all these problems are rooted in the economy, yet the guidance provided by economic models has often failed. Many books have been written about J. Doyne Farmer and his work, but this is the first in his own words. It presents a manifesto for how to do economics better. In this tale of science and ideas, Farmer fuses his profound knowledge and expertise with stories from his life to explain how we can bring a scientific revolution to bear on the economic conundrums facing society. Using big data and ever more powerful computers, we are now able for the first time to apply complex systems science to economic activity, building realistic models of the global economy. The resulting simulations and the emergent behavior we observe form the cornerstone of the science of complexity economics, allowing us to test ideas and make significantly better economic predictions--to better address the hard problems facing the world.
Fronti癡res en mouvement (Frontem)
During the process of European Integration, the European Union (EU) has progressively been established as a model of a "Europe without borders", in which free movement is guaranteed for its citizens. Cross-border cooperation in EU border regions has largely contributed to the implementation of this model. However, in the context of poly-crisis, where re-bordering is a frequent measure employed by EU Members States, this "Europe without borders" is largely being questioned. This publication collects the different contributions to the Jean Monnet Network "Fronti癡res en mouvement" (Frontem) between 2019 and 2023. They critically assess five models of cross-border cooperation in Europe: the Franco-German model of European integration, the Franco-Belgian model of an open border, the model of an invisible border on the Isle of Ireland, the Danish-German model of minority management and the Hungarian-Romanian model of cooperation for Central Europe. An overall comparison to the US-Canadian border also tests the applicability of these models to other areas in the world.
The Religious Roots of Longevity Risk Sharing
This book presents a unique historical study on the origins of longevity risk management and its links to religious institutions in the eighteenth century. Throughout history, monarchs, affluent patrons, and wealthy benefactors routinely pledged to provide their devotees with pensions or life annuities, mirroring the biblical concept of 'daily bread for life'. Until the eighteenth century, however, the uncertainty around the longevity of beneficiaries' lives and the difficulty of budgeting for random financial obligations had posed economic challenges that often led to insufficient funding and high default rates. This book narrates the genesis of longevity risk pooling and the first successfully funded annuity scheme in history, an eventual prototype for national pension plans around the world. It examines how a group of Protestant clergymen, scientists, and intellectuals associated with the Presbyterian Church of Scotland pioneered innovative methods for setting up a reversionary annuity and widow's pension plan, guided by actuarial principles. Unknown to many, the economist Adam Smith, and other literati of the Scottish Enlightenment, invested in this novel annuity. Illuminating the social and theological contexts of this scheme, the book argues that religious belief played a critical role in the development of best practices around the prudent management of longevity risk. The practices, values and beliefs in divine probabilities were at the heart of these thought leaders' confidence in long-term financial projections. Shedding light on this fascinating aspect of actuarial history by an examination of the archival records, while also linking to contextual discussions of modern pension challenges, this book will be of interest to scholars and readers interested in finance, insurance, pensions, and religion.
Sequential Innovation and Intellectual Property. A Comparison of Empirical and Experimental Findings
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: 1,3, University of Constance, language: English, abstract: Patents seem to hinder sequential innovation in the software sector, and that this type of sequential industry. For biopharmaceuticals empirical results do not suggest a clear effect of patents on sequential innovation. Comparing these two industries, it will be shown that the industry characteristics of the software branch fit more accurate the assumptions of the experimental approach of Br羹ggemann et al. (2016) than does the biopharmaceutical branch, which overall seems to have a special position in the discussion about patents spurring innovation or not.

International Trade under President Reagan
Under the Reagan presidency, the United States saw a period of strong economic growth. Analyzing the evolution of US foreign trade and its impact on the economy under the Reagan administration, Giuseppe La Barca shows how their economic achievements came about in part through well-exploited luck and reaffirmation of the supremacy of US economic interests. In stimulating its economy by consuming more than it produced, the US caused a growing trade deficit, appreciation of the dollar and an inflow of foreign capital that attracted prolonged differential interest rates. Offering a critical analysis of the evolution of US foreign trade and its impact on the national economy during the 1980s, this book shows how domestic and international economic policies shaped one another, and the impact they had in an increasingly globalizing world.
Unrealistic Profits, Unreliable Results
Consumption taxes, levied on the final purchase of goods and services, are a prevalent means for governments to raise revenue. To assess the potential impact of these taxes, economists rely on consumption tax models that simulate consumer behavior and predict revenue generation. However, a key limitation of these models lies in their depiction of stockpiling behavior. Stockpiling refers to the act of consumers purchasing goods in advance of a perceived future price increase, often triggered by an anticipated rise in consumption taxes. While acknowledging stockpiling, existing models often rely on simplifying assumptions, leading to potentially unrealistic and misleading results. This paper argues that current consumption tax models often overestimate the extent of stockpiling, resulting in inflated predictions of profit

It goes beyond traditional economic models to explore how perceptions, often unquantifiable, can significantly impact a region's success. The book examines how factors like quality of life, community spirit, and even cultural cachet can influence everything from business decisions and talent attraction to tourism and overall economic growth. "The Invisible Hand" provides insightful case studies and explores how policymakers and business leaders can cultivate these often-overlooked strengths. It's a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the hidden forces that drive regional economies and fostering vibrant communities that thrive.
The Age of Capitalism, Consumer Culture, and the Collapse of Nature in the Anthropocene
The Age of Capitalism, Consumer Culture, and the Collapse of Nature in the Anthropocene argues that the stability of post-industrial, postmodern society is threatened by the convergence of three distinct, yet interrelated, crises: environmental degradation, capitalist economic development, and the primacy of consumption and self-absorption as the basis for economic development at the expense of community and social relationships. Jack Thornburg contrasts advanced modern society with indigenous cultures in terms of nature and conceptions of the communal self. The complex nature of capitalist-oriented society has influenced how individuals conceptualize themselves. The outcome, the author contends, is a competitive society in which individuals are alienated living in uncertain times. One consequence of these crises (all of which derive from the Enlightenment and the concomitant appearance and evolution of capitalism) has been the destruction of a worldview balancing and connecting well-being with prosperity of the natural world. Money and materialism cannot buy happiness as capitalist narrative asserts. Thornburg claims that the happiness sought by individuals seeking meaning through consumption can only be realized by reintegrating nature with the human spirit.

You'll learn about concepts like inflation, crowding out private investment, and the burden placed on future generations. Family Farmers, Land Reforms and Political Action
This book examines how European farmers responded to the economic and political challenges created by the First World War and the Great Depression. The difficulties of interwar Europe have been frequently explored, but rarely from the perspective of the agricultural sector, where two-fifths of the population earned their livelihood, mostly as small, family farmers. The traditional literature argues that the landed elites conspired to undermine many of Europe's young democracies after the Great War. This book shows instead that by the early 1920s most had either sold their land or seen it confiscated following the widespread land reforms of Eastern Europe, leaving the family farm as the dominant unit of production. The book advances several theories that place the family farmer at the heart of change and explores why some proved to be enthusiastic supporters of liberal democracy, while others preferred political ideologies as diverse as social democracy in Scandinavia or fascism in Germany and Italy. It explores the nuanced and evolving links between family farms and government interests, showing how this relationship varied in different countries and contexts across Western and Central Europe. The book discusses the impact of family farms on agricultural market trends, the influence of collective action on government policies, and the increasing politicization of farmers and rural populations more broadly. The book also sheds light on how agrarian problems and their solutions differed in industrial, agrarian, and transforming societies in interwar Europe. This book will be an illuminating read for scholars of economic history, comparative history and European history interested in agriculture and rural communities.
