Enhancing Performance Regimes to Enable Outcome-Based Policy Analysis in Cross-Boundary Settings
Over the last two decades, the field of public administration has witnessed theoretical and practical changes that have innovated the relationships between public administration and performance management. Dealing with the rising complexity of performance regimes in contemporary public administration requires that policy-makers and their organizations are able to face unpredictable problems impacting on a community's quality of life. Complex policy issues - such as immigration, pandemics, societal aging, crime, unemployment, and financial crises - cannot be easily solved by quick fixes that are focused only on a short-term and bounded vision of their causes. They rather require "robust" methods to support policy analysis and to affect sustainable community outcomes in cross-boundary settings. As illustrated in this book, Dynamic Performance Management provides a methodological framework enabling policy-makers to outline the causal relationships among policy outcomes, performance drivers, and related strategic resources. Such a modeling approach helps stakeholders to broaden the investigated system boundaries so to balance short- and long-term performance under different result domains. This approach blends performance management and System Dynamics modeling. Several examples and case studies are discussed to enable scholars and practitioners to appreciate the practical implications related to the use of such an approach.
Quality Management
Quality Management: Reconsidered for the Digital Economy continues to provide a one-stop-shop for anyone studying the theory and practice of quality management. Exploring the essentials of management theory and the work of the 'quality gurus' who have formed the foundation of current practice, this new edition builds upon the previous editions' unique critical perspective of quality. Key management practices are considered and extended, including lean thinking, systems methodologies, business process reengineering, organisational learning and intelligent organisations and service quality management. This edition plays particularly close attention throughout to the impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution on quality management, revisiting the meaning of 'quality' in an automated and data-driven world. Throughout, case studies have been rewritten including new examples from emerging economies, and practical tools incorporated to enhance learning and application. Replete with examples, vignettes and diagrams, this comprehensive textbook is ideal for those new to the field of quality management and for students on advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Operations Management. Online resources include chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint slides and a test bank of questions.
Determining Cycle Times for Packing in Distribution Centres
Scope of this work is to determine cycle time formulas for packing in distribution centres. No such formulas exist today, even if it is the second most important process after picking. Based on examining packing, morphological boxes showing time influencing parameters are derived. The most significant parameters are identified using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Cycle times are determined and applied to cases. These prove that the formulas can be used to calculate the time required for packing.
Dealing with Change Through Information Sculpting
How do we deal with challenging life events? Working across hundreds of research studies, Dealing With Change Through Information Sculpting uncovers how people respond informationally to major life transitions by examining our information behaviours - how we provide, seek, assess, share, use, deny, avoid, and create information - during times of personal change and explains the role of these behaviours in reconstructing ourselves following a life event. Dealing With Change Through Information Sculpting proposes the theory of Information Sculpting to describe how we respond to change and the information behaviours we use to create this response, explaining how we construct solutions to life transitions by a series of information behaviours that are used to gain a sense of coherence, purpose, and value in life. Until now there has been no text that provides an information focus on transitions across the human life span. Dealing With Change Through Information Sculpting looks at information behaviour in relationship creation and breakdown, parenting, starting and ending work, developing sexualities, becoming ill, being a victim of crime, and dying, to show how our we sculpt information solutions that transform our lives and transform ourselves. Supported by a bibliography of over 1,000 works, this book is a major reference point for those interested in how we use information during the most significant times in our lives.
Assessing It Projects to Ensure Successful Outcomes
A comprehensive reference guide to IT project assessments, from planning to presentation Companies invest billions in technology projects each year, yet their success rates remain surprisingly low. Industry benchmarks suggest that only 15-20% of projects are completed on time and on budget. Project failures can impair an organization's capability as well as having significant commercial, compliance, and security ramifications, which in turn could cause reputational damage and long-term financial losses. It is therefore critical that projects meet their objectives. One way of ensuring that they do is to conduct assessments or audits at key points during their lifecycle. Product overview Assessing IT Projects to Ensure Successful Outcomes is a comprehensive reference guide that focuses on the assessment of IT projects. Organised into five main sections (Approach, Plan, Collect Information, Assess and Recommend, Package and Present), interspersed with case studies based on the author's extensive experience delivering projects, the book provides exhaustive guidance on structuring and conducting an IT project assessment, from planning to presentation. Assessing IT Projects to Ensure Successful Outcomes includes guidance on: Types of assessments and project approaches, including the difference between a project and program assessment. Determining a suitable assessment approach, developing a plan, preparing inventories, and planning for logistics. Information collection and assessment, including identifying and addressing challenges and gaps. Project scoping, change management, schedule management, and cost management. Key roles and focus areas, including team responsibilities and necessary documents, for each project stage. Communication strategies to ensure all stakeholders are kept appropriately informed of a project's progress. RAID (risks, actions, issues, decisions) management to address risks and issues that arise, actions that must be performed, and decisions that need to be made throughout the project's lifecycle. Compliance with standard frameworks. Intangibles, such as adapting to company cultures and reacting to cultural conflicts, resource and team dynamics, perception and reputations, and morale. How to package and present an assessment's findings and recommendations in a suitable manner. It also features a detailed summary section containing checklists for assessing all stages of projects - including typical roles on a project team, details of interview responsibilities by role, and a list of necessary project documents. This information can be used either reactively as an easy reference to assess projects, or proactively as a checklist of the considerations and activities required to plan and manage a project. Although principally aimed at professionals who are assessing projects - such as internal auditors, framework auditors, project assessors, or external consultants - Assessing IT Projects to Ensure Successful Outcomes can also be used by project managers looking for a comprehensive view of approaches for managing projects, or as a means of preparing for an assessment of their project. About the author Kerry Wills is a consultant and a project manager who has worked on multi-million dollar technology projects for Fortune 500 companies since 1995, gaining essential experience as program manager, project manager, architect, developer, business analyst, and tester. This breadth of experience gives him a deep understanding of all facets of IT projects. He has planned and executed several large programs, as well as assessed and remediated several troubled programs . Kerry Wills is also the author of Essential Project Management Skills and Applying Guiding Principles of Effective Program Delivery.
In Hindsight
""This comprehensive research consistently portrays a set of common factors that precedes each disaster - poor management, a lack of proper planning and weak risk management practices. An eye-opener to all those executives that fail to understand the importance of business continuity and disaster recovery mechanisms."" Luciano Anastasi, MA MBCS CITP, Head of Information Technology at APS Bank, Malta ""I have found 'In Hindsight' to be an interesting, thought provoking and stimulating collection of studies; and I have learned a great deal in reading it."" Phillip Wood, MBE MSc FSyI CPP PSP AMBCI MInstLM, author of Resilient Thinking ""I am constantly amazed by the number of executives who dismiss potential disasters as being too unlikely to consider, or who put off dealing with known risks because they have other things to worry about. This book is full of these people, and what happens in the case studies provides ample evidence to counter their complacency."" Martin Caddick. LLB MBA MBCI MIOR What causes disasters? In this book, the authors analyse the causes of some of the major disasters from the last thirty years and explain what could have been done better, before and after the event. Unlike many titles on business continuity and disaster recovery, In Hindsight: A compendium of Business Continuity case studies does not build up from the theory of business continuity planning. Instead, it takes apart real events such as Hurricane Katrina, the terrorist attacks in London, Madrid and Glasgow, and the collapse of Barings Bank, revealing the themes that contributed to each. Plan for the worst Using these incidents as case studies, the authors demonstrate the potentially devastating results for organisations that have not planned for the worst. Crucially, the book proposes measures that could have helped to minimise the risks and consequences. Learn from other people's mistakes By showing the potential repercussions of a badly thought-out disaster management and business continuity plan, this book helps you avoid making similar mistakes, reduce risks and enable faster recovery when things do go wrong. About the editor A Member of the Business Continuity Institute and an Approved BCI Instructor, Robert A. Clark is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Member of the Security Institute. His career includes 15 years with IBM and 11 years with Fujitsu Services working with clients on BCM related assignments. Data Protection and the Cloud - Are you really managing the risks?
With a view to helping managers ask the right questions, Data Protection and the Cloud explains how you can effectively manage the risks associated with the Cloud and meet regulatory requirements. This book discusses: One of the most dramatic recent developments in computing has been the rapid adoption of Cloud applications. According to the 2018 Bitglass Cloud Adoption Report, more than 81% of organisations have now adopted the Cloud in some form, compared with only 24% in 2014. And there are no signs that this is slowing down. The GDPR was enforced on 25 May 2018, superseding the 1995 Data Protection Directive and all local implementations. Bringing data protection into the 21st century, the Regulation expands the rights of individuals, but also introduces new, stricter requirements for organisations. This pocket guide discusses the GDPR requirements relating to Cloud sourcing and the risks involved.Supplemental material While most of the EU GDPR's requirements are broadly unchanged in the UK GDPR, the context is quite different and will have knock-on effects. You may need to update contracts regarding EU-UK data transfers, incorporate standard contractual clauses into existing agreements, and update your policies, processes and procedural documentation as a result of these changes. We have published a supplement that sets out specific extra or amended information for this pocket guide. Click here to download the supplement. Flow
With supply chain disruptions increasingly discussed in the media and impacting our daily lives, Flow offers an important framework and solutions for remedying the rampant delays and bottlenecks that exist in global supply chains. This book describes the concept of flow, which evokes physical properties that exist in nature, such as the flow of electricity, the flow of materials, and the flow of time. In terms of process optimization, flow encompasses the integration of end-to-end supply chains and the movement toward relocation of global supply bases to nearshore/onshore geographies. Achieving flow is essential for organizations seeking to improve their supply chain performance in a time of increasing disruption. This book highlights the high-level effectiveness of business strategies that use predictions based on the sequence of world events, global supply chains, and data by exchanged smart technologies. By broadly applying physical laws to the global supply chain, Rob Handfield and Tom Linton explore the impact of supply chain physics on global market policies, such as tariffs, factory location, pandemic response, supply base geographies, and outsourcing. The authors provide specific recommendations on what to do to improve supply chain flows, and include important insights for managers with examples from companies such as Biogen, General Motors, Siemens, and Flex with regard to their response to COVID-19. Flow is an important resource not only for procurement and supply chain management professionals, but for any manager concerned with enterprise-level success.

Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Management
This book takes as its starting point the need to improve sustainability performance across the triple bottom line and reach global sustainable development goals. As such, it places sustainability at the heart of developing and explaining relevant theory, concepts and models in operations and supply chain management. Whereas previous textbooks on operations and supply chain management have focused on augmenting existing models of operations and supply chain management by simply adding on selected sustainability issues, this textbook places sustainability at the heart of operations and supply chain management. Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Management consolidates the tools, concepts and methods of operations and supply chain management relevant for reaching sustainable development goals. This book includes not only descriptions of the theories and models but also practical cases based on the most recent developments in different industry sectors, including user electronics, healthcare, fashion and energy. Relevant student exercises are also included for use in the classroom or in personal study. This book provides an ideal introduction for Bachelor or Masters-level students, whether they are on general management and business degrees, or are focused on areas such as engineering management, technology management or sustainability management. Furthermore, university-level teachers and lecturers will find the material presented in this book a valuable basis for structuring their courses on operations and supply chain management in the context of sustainability.

Measuring Productivity in Education and Not-For-Profits
This book takes the reader through real-world examples for how to characterize and measure the productivity and performance of NFPs and education institutions--that is, organisations that produce value for society, which cannot be measured accurately in financial KPIs. It focuses on how best to frame non-profit performance and productivity, and provides a suite of tools for measurement and benchmarking. It further challenges the reader to consider alternative and appropriate uses of quantitative measures, which are fit-for-purpose in individual contexts. It is true that the risk of misusing quantitative measures is ever-present. But does that risk outweigh the benefits of forming a more precise and shared understanding of what could generate better outcomes? There will always be concerns about policy and performance management. Goodheart's Law states that once a measure becomes a target, it is no longer a good measure. This book helps to strike a meaningful balance between what can be measured, what cannot, and how best to use quantitative information in sectors that are often averse to being held up to the light and put on a scale by outsiders.
Distributive Institutions

Work That Makes Sense Operator-Led Visuality
This book presents the mechanics of implementing visuality on the value-add level known as Work That Makes Sense (WTMS). The step-by-step WTMS process described in this book teaches operators a proven method for translating information deficits into visual solutions that take the struggle out of their day-to-day work. As a result, operators transform their work area into a work environment that speaks-a work environment that, by design, shares vital information in the form of visual devices that help them perform their day-to-day work with precision and completeness. At the heart of this visual conversion approach is an element unique to Galsworth's paradigm called I-driven that recognizes that operators will pursue self-leadership in the company's improvement initiatives if they are given the opportunity to learn how to do so. Also recognized is the fact that this can only happen if associates are taught-and given the opportunity to learn and apply a new system of thinking. The author calls this new system visual thinking. This book provides that learning pathway, in detail, supported by hundreds of actual visual solutions, developed by operators who have followed that pathway and become visual thinkers for themselves-I-driven. They become self-leaders, in control of their corner of the world and able and willing to share their strengths with others. In this way, the WTMS process produces a deep and abiding change in the company's work culture that builds creativity and ownership. As a result, the organization's leadership framework widens to include operators. When effectively applied the WTMS process detailed in this book produces 15% to 30% improvement in local KPIs, including productivity, on-time delivery, quality, and costs; these figures are documented and presented in the pages of this book. Written for operators, this book includes a wealth of color photographs, the majority of which are visual solutions created by visual thinkers who have lived this process for themselves. All are fully captioned and thoughtfully described. The book also includes twelve tasks that managers implement in support that they seek on the operator level. WTMS teaches that visual devices translate information into exact behavior, embedding and sustaining precision through visual solutions. Precision is built in by the same operators who execute it. This is the heart of an I-driven visual enterprise. Once learned and operationalized, this paradigm allows the organization to take on any new improvement effort. Organizational alignment and teamwork have been redefined and operationalized.

Crossing Boundaries
This book provides thoughtful insights into the development in work, organisations and employment relations in the last 50 years. In a semi-autobiographical approach, the author reflects on important contributions by other scholars, practitioners, and policy makers to work and employment relations. The book covers a variety of themes which have been the subject of research undertaken by the author over his career and explores these themes over a period of time with examples drawn from various countries. It also emphasises that countries and regions cannot be understood in isolation from each other. The author seeks to convey the importance of crossing disciplinary boundaries in the social sciences in order to interpret changes in work, organisations and employment relations.Drawing on the author's rich experience and research, the book is engaging and accessible to anyone who wishes to learn more about the rapidly changing workplace and employment relations.
Big, Open and Linked Data
This book examines the recent evolution of the concept of data as an economic and managerial phenomenon. The author first describes and discusses open data and then introduces the concept of linked data, with a focus on assets for reuse. Furthermore, he addresses the main challenges of big data. Value is identified as the main incentive for the adoption of linked data; accordingly, the next two chapters study sources of data value from a macroeconomic and micro economic perspective, respectively. This contributes to the systematization of important issues at the crossroads of enterprise data and data sharing: data ownership, personal data, and data privacy. In turn, the book reveals the role of innovation as a main vehicle for creating value by unifying big, open, and linked data. It studies the ways in which value can be created, transferred, and captured in the form of business models, before the closing chapter verifies the data unification model by combining open and linked geographical data with big data from a major telecom company.
Diginomics Research Perspectives
This book focuses on traditional fields of business studies and economics and how digitalization has affected them. It provides an overview about the lessons learned from academic research and highlights implications for practitioners. Digitalization has not only changed the ways business administration and economics are taught, but also the substance at the core of the two disciplines. Chapters from expert contributors define and carefully evaluate the developments that have occurred over the last decades. The authors further provide an assessment of how industry branches have adapted and in which form regulators have engaged. Attention is given to the theoretical and empirical findings from recent scholarly literature. Furthermore, the authors provide some novel insights from their own research at the University of Bremen. This book appeals to business administration, economics, and entrepreneurship scholars and practitioners alike.
