Adjacent Learning
Use insights from outside the business to rethink workplace learning in order to drive individual and team performance. Workplaces are not the only setting where employees learn. They are learning constantly in all areas of their lives. The problem is that learning and development (L&D) practitioners don't know how to apply the experiences from outside the traditional business setting to improve employee learning and drive business results. Adjacent Learning is a practical guide which solves this problem. Topics covered include acting, difference and emotion through to language, observation and storytelling and explains how these can be used to deliver more effective workplace learning. There is also expert guidance on the importance of employees understanding the 'why' and 'how' of learning, as well as why it's essential to consider experiences from other countries and industries to create diversity of thought which generates the best possible results. Reflection points and key takeaways are included in every chapter as well as interviews with leading figures in the L&D industry. This practical guide is also full of advice, tips and examples throughout to help L&D professionals design a robust learning strategy that will allow employees and the business to thrive.

Producing Green Knowledge and Innovation
The knowledge and innovation meant for knowledge-based economies (KBEs) are branded as green knowledge and innovation/ethical human capital, blended with the natural system as modeled by the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation. However, due to bureaucratic challenges and myths, conventional universities produce knowledge and innovation in the sense of traditional disciplinary knowledge, which are not adequate to meet the goals of sustainable development. This book provides a model for greening a university which in turn can produce green knowledge and innovation in the mainstream knowledge production process. This model, which is based on research, can be adopted by the conventional universities in other regions. Such a process results in providing benefits to stakeholders of the university at the micro-level. At the macro-level, it blends with the other knowledge systems--namely, the natural environment of society, economic system, media-based and culture-based publicand civil society, and political system--to create a sustainable knowledge economy.
Always Making Progress
This book guides process-industry professionals from the implementation of the basic foundations of Continuous Improvement (CI) through to an organization where CI is a "way of life" and a defining feature of the culture of the organization. The readers of this book are seeking solutions to such pressing issues as: - Eliminating accidents and near misses. - Reducing customer complaints. - Improving customer delivery performance. - Elimination of accidents and near misses. - Reducing customer complaints. - Improving customer delivery performance. - Introducing new products. - Improving staff productivity. - Removing costs to meet the budget. - Dealing with absence and poor morale. - Improving staff retention. This book provides them with guidance on how to address issues in these areas in a way that enables improvements to be realized quickly but not at the expense of a long-term goal of a sustainable Continuous Improvement culture. In addition, this book presents the implementation of CI as a cyclical journey with no endpoint. The stages are ordered in a sequence that enables the reader to get started in their area of the company and build up the elements without the need for an overall organizational strategy at the beginning. Continuous Improvement is a vast subject with many takes on principles, approaches, and tools. This book is about how all the fundamentals of these areas fit together and, as such, covers only some of them. However, within the bibliography, I have signposted the books that have guided me during my career and which go into the principles, approaches, and tools further.
The Economics of Firm Productivity
Productivity varies widely between industries and countries, but even more so across individual firms within the same sectors. The challenge for governments is to strike the right balance between policies designed to increase overall productivity and policies designed to promote the reallocation of resources towards firms that could use them more effectively. The aim of this book is to provide the empirical evidence necessary in order to strike this policy balance. The authors do so by using a micro-aggregated dataset for 20 EU economies produced by CompNet, the Competitiveness Research Network, established some 10 years ago among major European institutions and a number of EU productivity boards, National Central Banks, National Statistical institutes, as well as academic Institutions. They call for pan-EU initiatives involving statistical offices and scholars to achieve a truly complete EU market for firm-level information on which to build solidly founded economic policies.

Strategic Planning for Dynamic Supply Chains
This book presents a strategic decision-making process (i.e., scenario planning) to help managers build supply chain infrastructures that can adapt to uncertain shifts in the business environment. The authors detail the process for developing and applying scenarios for strategic planning in organizations playing three different roles in supply chains. Using three cases in which the process was applied in association with the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics, this primer also explains how companies can monitor their business environments to decide when to take the necessary steps to adapt their supply chain strategies and assets. The lessons learned are applicable globally: in first-world free-market economies, emerging countries and poorer nations, as well as the states where the government plays a strong role in the economic activity. For companies looking to assess the numerous drivers shaping their supply chains and use that information to makeliving strategic plans, this book will teach you how to build adaptable and agile supply chains. It will explain how to approach long-term investments in your organization.

Each chapter comes with practical real-world examples drawn from a range of business contexts, including Amazon and Starbucks, case study discussion questions, computer-assisted exercises and programming projects.
The Right Sensory Mix
Many companies fail to acknowledge and analyze disparities observed among customers and simply put them down to culture or emotion. New neuroendocrinological research proves that people are rational: They just have a different biological perception of the same stimulus. Their preferences, behavior, and decisions are strongly influenced by the hundreds of millions of sensors monitoring their body and brain. People with more taste buds are, for example, sensitive to bitterness and are more likely to drink their coffee with sugar or milk, or to drink tea. This book helps product managers, marketers, and corporate decision-makers understand and predict customers' behavior and preferences. It provides the tools to design the right sensory mix (color, shape, depth, taste, smell, texture, and sound) for each product, and fine-tune their positioning and range for every local market. Using cases from different sectors, the author shows that this approach delivers planet and people-friendly innovations which have a higher chance of success in the market.
Advances in Information Systems Development
This volume features a collection of papers on emerging concepts, significant insights, novel approaches and ideas in information systems development (ISD). It examines and investigates up-and-coming trends in ISD in general, emphasizing the continuous collaboration between developers and operators to optimize the software delivery time. The book gathers selected papers from the 29th International Conference on Information Systems Development held at Universitat Polit癡cnica de Val癡ncia, Spain, September 8-10, 2021. The theme of ISD2021 was "Crossing Boundaries between Development and Operations (DevOps) in Information Systems." The revised and extended papers focus on the influences among information systems, organizational structures, processes and people from its conception to its operation. They examine methodological issues and ways in which the IS designers, developers and operators are transforming organisations and society through information systems.

The book takes a practical, industry-based and hands-on approach to equip the reader adequately. Exhibits and case study workshops have also been included in the book to facilitate clear understanding of the subject. The book is intended for reading by professionals belonging to different disciplines of organizations where quality management system is a part of their business operations, professional quality practitioners, internal and external auditors of QMS, teachers of quality management faculty and students learning quality management.
Untangling with Value Stream Mapping
The standard belief in books about Lean initiatives and value stream mapping (VSM) is that VSM works well on transactional processes (which are primarily linear processes where handoffs are well defined and the outcome is known) and it is useful for repetitive projects or products. This book counters these statements by clearly demonstrating how a VSM exercise can be successfully performed in complex, multifunctional environments involving nonrepetitive work, such as aircraft new product development, custom engineering, software development and project management. The methodology described in this book is the result of more than ten years of refinement and is based on practice while working with multidisciplinary teams and helping them achieve their goals. This is a novel approach to capturing the information flow in a VSM by recognizing it as the place where most of the issues are generated, especially for the previously mentioned environments and the fact that classical mapping methodologies (including classical VSM) do not capture it well. The VSM methodology that the author developed goes to the essence of a VSM (activities flow, information flow, timeline), uses conventional VSM icons and some custom information flow icons and helps the following: Quantifying waste (VSM literature gap) Making disconnects visible (VSM literature gap) Making behavioral and cultural patterns visible (VSM literature gap) If the steps are followed thoroughly, then lead time reductions ranging from 60% to 88% are achieved, along with increased availability of resources, more output with the same resources, projects delivered on time and, most importantly, colleagues embracing the Lean mindset, which greatly contributes to maintaining the gains.Essentially, this book helps readers perform a VSM in environments where multiple stakeholders interact with each other to deliver a product or a service with unclear aspects, such as what the product/service is, how all involved can contribute to the product or service transformation and how the interactions between them occur. For example, the products/services targeted in this book include test results, analysis results, a custom design, a process, a methodology, an engineering change, integrated enterprise software and engineering drawings.Concurrently, this book helps readers map behavioral patterns, such as micromanagement, and company culture aspects, such as excessive governance and "decisions by committee."

Algorithmic Decision Making with Python Resources
This book describes Python3 programming resources for implementing decision aiding algorithms in the context of a bipolar-valued outranking approach. These computing resources, made available under the name Digraph3, are useful in the field of Algorithmic Decision Theory and more specifically in outranking-based Multiple-Criteria Decision Aiding (MCDA). The first part of the book presents a set of tutorials introducing the Digraph3 collection of Python3 modules and its main objects, such as bipolar-valued digraphs and outranking digraphs. In eight methodological chapters, the second part illustrates multiple-criteria evaluation models and decision algorithms. These chapters are largely problem-oriented and demonstrate how to edit a new multiple-criteria performance tableau, how to build a best choice recommendation, how to compute the winner of an election and how to make rankings or ratings using incommensurable criteria. The book's third part presents three real-world decision case studies, while the fourth part addresses more advanced topics, such as computing ordinal correlations between bipolar-valued outranking digraphs, computing kernels in bipolar-valued digraphs, testing for confidence or stability of outranking statements when facing uncertain or solely ordinal criteria significance weights, and tempering plurality tyranny effects in social choice problems. The fifth and last part is more specifically focused on working with undirected graphs, tree graphs and forests. The closing chapter explores comparability, split, interval and permutation graphs. The book is primarily intended for graduate students in management sciences, computational statistics and operations research. The chapters presenting algorithms for ranking multicriteria performance records will be of computational interest for designers of web recommender systems. Similarly, the relative and absolute quantile-rating algorithms, discussed and illustrated in several chapters, will be of practical interest to public and private performance auditors.

Robust Process Mining with Guarantees
This book presents techniques for process discovery, conformance checking and enhancement. For process discovery, it introduces the Inductive Miner framework: a recursive skeleton for discovery techniques that in itself provides several guarantees. The framework is instantiated in several concrete discovery techniques, each of which targets a specific challenge of process discovery, such as incompleteness of information or noisy behavior. For conformance checking, it introduces the Projected Conformance Checking framework, which focuses on speed, but nevertheless provides several guarantees, such as that for certain classes of models, it can decide language equivalence. For enhancement, it introduces the Inductive visual Miner, a well-polished end-user focused tool that includes process discovery, conformance checking and that can visualize performance on a discovered model, all without any user input.

Sustainable Cities
Global cities are facing an almost unprecedented challenge of change. As they re-emerge from the Covid 19 pandemic and get ready to face climate change and other, potentially existential threats, they need to look for new ways to support wealth and wellbeing creation - leveraging Big Data and AI and suing them into their physical reality and to become greener, more inclusive and resilient, hence sustainable. This book describes how new digital technologies could be used to design digital and physical twins of cities that are able to feed into each other to optimize their working and ability to create new wealth and wellbeing. The book also describes how to increase cities' social and economic resilience during crisis time and addressing their almost fatal weaknesses - as it became all too obvious during the recent COVID 19 crisis. Also, the book presents a framework for a critical discussion of the concept of "smart-city", suggesting its development into a "cyber" and "meta" one- meaning, not only digital systems can allow physical ones (e.g. cities, citizens, households and companies) to become "smarter", but also the vice versa is true, as off line data and real life behaviours can support the optimization and development of virtual brains as a sum of big data and artificial intelligence apps all sitting "over the cloud". An analysis of the fundamental dynamics of this emerging "info-telligence" economy, and of the potential role of big digital players like Amazon, Google and Facebook is then paving the way to discuss a few strategic forays on how traditional sectors such as financial services, real estate, TMT or health could also evolve, leveraging Big Data and AI in a cyber-physical integrated setting. Finally, a number of thought provoking use cases that could be designed around individuals, and to improve the success and the resilience of households and companies living and working in urban areas are discussed, as an example of one of the most exciting future markets to come: the one of global, sustainable cities

Job Insecurity, Union Involvement and Union Activism
This volume contains empirical analyses of European psychologists and sociologists on the impact of job insecurity on trade union membership, activism and upon the attitudes of individual workers towards unions. Little is currently known about the impact of job insecurity on the union participation of workers, which is significant given the importance of trade unions in European collective bargaining systems. This volume reports innovative and pioneering research on this research gap. It answers questions such as: do workers more easily join unions because of job insecurity, or does it make them leave the union? Does it influence participation in work's council elections or affect the intention to become a union activist? And are workers less satisfied and less committed to their unions when they experience job insecurity? The book contains recommendations for policy makers, social partners and practitioners in the field of work and organizations.

Sorry, but Humans are fucked
That humans may well be fucked is not to offend religious nor rational values. It is a metaphor of urgency for humans as they enter an increasingly hopeless and irreversible pathway.Death provides the challenge to life's continuance. Family has long been a means to negotiate continuance within limits of the 4th dimension. Threats to life's necessary context was noted by a woman of science in 1856, Eunice Foot, a farm girl. She was concerned about a model of industrialization from fragments of analytic science. She noted the deterioration of nature from meeting biophysical human needs and psycho-wants. CO2 threats to conditions of life in the 3rd dimension was her concern. Now labeled climate change, it highlights consequences from man's war against nature, including diseases, chemicalized air, water, and food, then heat intolerant of life. She illustrated how CO2 excess could remove life from the planet. James Black of Exxon illustrated the realization of Foot's concern in 1977. He argued that humans needed alternatives to meeting bio-needs and psycho wants. At that time David Hawk was managing an environmental deterioration research study that included Black. His final report recommended abandonment of legalistic order from analytic fragments absent any frame of context. He proposed a nonhierarchical negotiated order in a natural context without legal order governance filled with hierarchical threats shown to only encourage more deterioration.
African Gold
The book explores the evolving economics of gold as a global commodity as well as the production and trade of gold in and from the African continent. The growth of gold as an increasingly important and diverse source of African wealth is examined, alongside the impact that the rise of China in the 21st century has had on the demand for gold. The volatility of the gold price has increased as a result of the dramatic decline of gold demand for manufacturing purposes. Gold is Africa's second largest export after oil and is a perfect metaphor for a continent rich in resources while so much of its population lives in such dire poverty. The artisanal and small scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, is surprisingly widely perceived as being beneficial to the development of Africa despite its exploitation and dreadful health and environmental consequences. African Gold: Production, Trade and Economic Development considers policy issues regarding the gold mining sector, the economics of beneficiation, the retreat of jewelry manufacturing across the continent as well as 'Africa's golden future'. It is a relevant book for both academics and policymakers interested in Africa, natural resource, and development economics.

Synesis
The complexity of today's large organisations, businesses, and social institutions defeats management approaches based on monolithic thinking. Most industry and service organisations look at their performance either from a single perspective - productivity, quality, safety, etc. - or from different but separate perspectives that reside in organisational silos. Quality is treated separately from safety, which, again, is treated separately from productivity, and so on. While siloed thinking may be convenient in the short term, it fails to recognise that any specific perspective reveals only a part of what goes on. Yet it is essential to have a unified view of how an organisation functions effectively to manage changes and to ensure the organisation excels in what it does. Synesis represents the mutually dependent set of priorities, perspectives, and practices that an organisation needs to carry out its activities as intended. It shows how to overcome the fragmentation in foci, scope, and time that characterises the dominant change management paradigms. This book is consequently not about productivity or quality or safety or reliability but about all of these together. It is about why it is necessary to think of them as a whole. And it is about how this can be done in practice.
