French "photograffeur" JR's tribute to cultural institutions during COVID-19Throughout the pandemic, cultural institutions have been forced to shut their doors to the public. Palazzo Strozzi in Florence has commissioned street artist JR (born 1983) to address this unfortunate reality. He has done so by transforming the facade of the Palazzo into a towering photographic collage installation that functions like an anamorphosis: when viewed from a particular vantage point, the distorted image reveals a courtyard, exhibition hall and library.In this volume, JR offers the public a look inside that which, for now, is inaccessible. The Wound (La Ferita) is a poignant reflection on the wound endured by cultural institutions during the pandemic. The book includes a conversation between the artist and curator Arturo Galansino, in which they delve into the genesis and realization of this singular piece.

Dream-inspired book covers for imaginary pulp novels by Americana connoisseur-bricoleur Jim Shaw Since the 1970s, American artist Jim Shaw (born 1952) has used his multimedia artistic practice as a means of exploring and exploiting pop-culture iconography. This publication focuses on one of the key series in Shaw's corpus, in which he draws inspiration from the Anglo-American graphic design and illustrative tradition of cheap paperback books. Inspired by the artist's intense dreaming life, the Paperback Covers series (1996-2013) recreates the lurid imagery associated with pulp novels, with vertical canvases that depict fantastical and irreverent imagery: in one, a werewolf in suspenders is struck by an oncoming 18-wheeler; in another, a line of chorus girls dance in front of a vampire and a woman in red as the couple is in engulfed by flames. Though these "books" bear no text, Shaw's paintings evoke exciting narratives within a single image. All the inventoried Paperback Covers are collected in this softcover volume along with a text by Charlie Fox.

The Art of Winold Reiss
This volume brings to light the creative and forward-thinking work of German-born artist Winold Reiss (1886-1953), who arrived in New York in 1913, the year of the ground-breaking Armory Show. The exhibition shook the American art scene to its core and ushered in a radically new artistic sensibility, whilst Reiss's exuberant, dynamic designs anticipated the American passion for this new European avant-garde art. Ned Christie
Who was Nede Wade Christie? Was he a violent criminal guilty of murdering a federal officer? Or a Cherokee statesman who suffered a martyr's death for a crime he did not commit? For more than a century, journalists, pulp fiction authors, and even serious historians have produced largely fictitious accounts of "Ned" Christie's life. Now, in a tour de force of investigative scholarship, Devon A. Mihesuah offers a far more accurate depiction of Christie and the times in which he lived. In 1887 Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Maples was shot and killed in Tahlequah, Indian Territory. As Mihesuah recounts in unsurpassed detail, any of the criminals in the vicinity at the time could have committed the crime. Yet the federal court at Fort Smith, Arkansas, focused on Christie, a Cherokee Nation councilman and adviser to the tribal chief. Christie evaded capture for five years. His life ended when a posse dynamited his home--knowing he was inside--and shot him as he emerged from the burning building. The posse took Christie's body to Fort Smith, where it lay for three days on display for photographers and gawkers. Nede's family suffered as well. His teenage cousin Arch Wolfe was sentenced to prison and ultimately perished in the Canton Asylum for "insane" Indians--a travesty that, Mihesuah shows, may even surpass the injustice of Nede's fate. Placing Christie's story within the rich context of Cherokee governance and nineteenth-century American political and social conditions, Mihesuah draws on hundreds of newspaper accounts, oral histories, court documents, and family testimonies to assemble the most accurate portrayal of Christie's life possible. Yet the author admits that for all this information, we may never know the full story, because Christie's own voice is largely missing from the written record. In addition, she spotlights our fascination with villains and martyrs, murder and mayhem, and our dangerous tendency to glorify the "Old West." Nall at Troy
Troy, Alabama, is not the first place that comes to mind as a source of great art. It's probably not even the thousandth place. But it is the birthplace of Fred Nall Hollis, an internationally acclaimed and celebrated artist who works under the moniker Nall. In his large-scale mixed media collages and paintings, often featuring his own print work, Nall tackles the most difficult topics in art: death, religion, politics, sexuality, gender, and more. Truly an artist with a multicultural focus, the subject matter of Nall's work originates in his own story, shared in Nall at Troy. After attending the University of Alabama during the turbulent 1960s, Nall boldly ventured to Europe and developed relationships with some of the West's most influential figures, including Salvador Dali, James Baldwin, Prince Albert of Monaco, and Ringo Starr. His career blossomed in Europe, but Nall began to feel a longing for his hometown of Troy and artists with which he might find a close kinship. Nall at Troy is an exploration of the artist's homecoming, his promotion of Alabama artists, and his establishing of unique relationships with students and faculty at Troy University. Nall's contributions to the town, such as the creation of an international art center and the Nall Museum, have caused the community to have a great affinity for the artist. Nall at Troy is an opportunity for the city of Troy and its excellent university to share one of Alabama's best-kept secrets with the world.
The Tally
The Tally is an artist's book created by a computer program written by Sydney Cardew, which uses official UK government statistics to create a memorial for those who have died in the UK during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is intended to give an understanding of the scale of the tragedy by converting unintelligibly large numbers into a physical object.
