Michael Asher: Writings 1973-1983 on Works 1969-1979
An essential and long out-of-print document of formative works by institutional critique progenitor Michael AsherOriginally published in 1983, Writings 1973-1983 on Works 1969-1979, by Los Angeles artist Michael Asher (1943-2012) presents select documentation of 33 works through writings, photographs, architectural floor plans, exhibition announcements and other ephemera. For most of his career, Asher did not create traditional art objects; instead, he altered the existing institutional apparatus through which art is presented, creating work that intervened in the architectural, social or economic systems that undergird how art is produced and experienced. For example, in 1974, he removed the partition wall dividing the office and gallery space of the Claire S. Copley Gallery in Los Angeles, revealing the day-to-day activities of the gallery to the public. In another work from 1979, Asher had a bronze replica of a late 18th-century sculpture of George Washington moved from the exterior of the Art Institute of Chicago to a museum gallery that housed 18th-century art, reintroducing the statue to its original period context and shifting its function from public monument to indoor sculpture. Due to its site- and time-specific nature, Asher's work generally ceased to exist after an exhibition, which makes this highly sought-after book an invaluable resource. As the artist states in the introduction: "This book as a finished product will have a material permanence that contradicts the actual impermanence of the art-work, yet paradoxically functions as a testimony to that impermanence of my production." Initiated by Kasper K繹nig, Writings 1973-1983 on Works 1969-1979 was originally copublished by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and was largely shaped by Asher's close collaboration with Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, who succeeded K繹nig as editor of the press.

Andy Warhol
A critical primer on the work of Andy Warhol.Andy Warhol (1928-1987), one of the most celebrated artists of the last third of the twentieth century, owes his unique place in the history of visual culture not to the mastery of a single medium but to the exercise of multiple media and roles. A legendary art world figure, he worked as an artist, filmmaker, photographer, collector, author, and designer. Beginning in the 1950s as a commercial artist, he went on to produce work for exhibition in galleries and museums. The range of his efforts soon expanded to the making of films, photography, video, and books. Warhol first came to public notice in the 1960s through works that drew on advertising, brand names, and newspaper stories and headlines. Many of his best-known images, both single and in series, were produced within the context of pop art. Warhol was a major figure in the bridging of the gap between high and low art, and his mode of production in the famous studio known as "The Factory" involved the recognition of art making as one form of enterprise among others. The radical nature of that enterprise has ensured the iconic status of his art and person. Andy Warhol contains illustrated essays by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Thomas Crow, Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Annette Michelson, and Nan Rosenthal, plus a previously unpublished interview with Warhol by Buchloh. The essays address Warhol's relation to and effect on mass culture and the recurrence of disaster and death in his art.
We Met in Memphis

Sketchbook 3; A Collection of Drawings, Photographs, Collages and Paintings
Welcome to my sketchbook ! This is my sketchbook with 39 samples of my recent work from this past year and from when I began to paint and draw in the eighties. I mix contemporary art with poetry and technology in the form of art books, murals, art prints and interactive projects. The subjects in this collection of small drawings range from dance, urban photography, magnified and coloured flowers, French decorations, and reflection and sea photography. The medium for these images range from paint, watercolour, chalk drawings, digital photography, fabric paint and pencil crayons on different surfaces. I am using more multimedia in my art than I ever did in my art training because I post a lot of art online in my main webpage and for my blog at www.susanaroque.com. I really enjoyed integrating photography with drawing and colouring in this sketchbook. I have put art pieces from an interactive story called the Lighthouse the Bird and the Poem on the Shore, my recent art work. I also have some photography from a poetry and art book called Inverness Street which I hope that you will enjoy. I have some Central American art work in some of the pieces with the brighest colours. Undoubtedly, the culture of Latin America, El Salvador in particular, has influenced a lot of these drawings. My time with in the Mayan markets, towns and land in Guatemala and the rest of Central America influenced the tone and shapes of a lot of my art, as you will see. I included drawings from my training in Laval University and Emily Carr University. There is an exercise I did in class with charcoal and a lot of paper where I had to take one of my favourite objects and make it abstract. I hope you will like it. There is another exercise with charcoal in Quebec, where I used charcoal and bread on carton, which I really enjoyed making which I hope you will take the time to look at. Learning to draw there was well worth my trip at -35 degrees celsius ! The digital art with flowers and images of the sea or any images that are in an art book are some of the most recent pieces. Reflections from a Restless Mind
Dorothy Canote has graced us with another lovely coffee table book of her experiences, thoughts and paintings. Her subjects range the full gamut from her family origins to research of her original home in Avalon, located in northern Missouri to Mexico to mitochondria and women in her life. Her love of family is evident from her depiction, both in words and watercolor painting (from memory) of her beloved Grandma Jesse and her home. Other subjects include travel stories from what she terms her "Middle Years," which showcase her rather fearless adventures during that time, such as caving, canoeing and all with complete with illustrations of the beauty found at those spots. We see her love of science in both her essays and illustrations.
Essays in Celebrity Culture
The book is a full-length study of Indian celebrity culture, including fandom, celebrity philanthropy and celebrity activism, which are established features of life today and which constitute a major component of pop culture's coverage of sports/film stars. The collection of essays in the book moves from the largest domain of celebrity culture in India - Bollywood - through celebrity life writing and biopics and, finally, to the politics of and by celebrity culture. The book begins with an exploration of films made around women celebrity victims - Phoolan Devi, Bhanwari Devi, Jessica Lal and Kiranjit Ahluwaliato - and moves on to show how the vernacular cosmopolitanism of Bollywood stars' philanthropic and humanitarian work enables their insertion into a global humanitarian project wherein the Bollywood campaigner for women's rights, environmental causes or animal welfare generates a membership in the global citizenship of benevolence and charity. Celebrity charisma and its role in the current era of 'post-truth' are studied to show how Bollywood charisma as a form of mimetic capital generates a sensuous fidelity in the audience, inducing a certain cultural ignorance. The book goes on to show how star memoirs reinforce star-value through the generation of an interart work, in which the life story is framed within the film history of the individual, and the films are framed by the life of the actor. The hagiographic biopics around cricket stars M.S. Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, the criminal Charles Shobhraj and Neerja Bhanot, the air hostess killed by hijackers, make a case for an argument that the family and the nation remain nodal points in the representations of the lives and careers, and how these representations enable the making of certain aspirational models for the country. Reading cancer memoirs by Bollywood stars shows how these celebrity somatographies move outward, from a focus on the star's body to the biosocial network. The final collection of essays are at the intersection of celebritydom and celebrity politics that starts with the examination of the genre of Indian writing in English as a celebrity within the context of literary festivals and the demand for the postcolonial exotic. The River Narmada as a cultural icon and its iconicity generates a whole new grammar of protest, having become a part of India's collective cultural memory. Reading Arundhati Roy as a celebrity makes a case for her 'insurgent celebrityhood' created through her mobility into and across many public domains. The desacralization of the iconic Ambedkar statues, which occurs periodically in parts of India, is a mode of once again rendering the Dalit an 'outcast'. Reading the websites of celebrity Indian authors, Ashok Banker, Devdutt Pattnaik and Amish, demonstrates how a certain self-fashioning by these authors occurs through a careful engagement with a Hindu ancestry and tradition. The self-fashioning is linked to, and manifests as, their literary location within a scriptural-mythological narrative.

Coni Minneci
Printed for the solo exhibition, Coni Minneci: Mothers of Invention - Real Women Who Rock, from September 18 - October 17, 2020, at Meibohm Fine Arts, East Aurora, NY. The exhibit catalog showcases thirty-six modestly scaled, mixed media artworks by Coni Minneci (American, born 1950) honoring twenty-six historic and contemporary women inventors. In addition to researching the women and their inventions, she challenged herself to incorporate multiple references to their inventions in the artworks and, in many cases, this involved actually using the materials they invented. The resulting artworks, hybrids of painting and assemblage, are thoughtfully conceived and expertly constructed and took Coni five years to complete.

Bertille Bak. The Fairy Tale of the Real
Bak never starts from a definite project a priori; at times they are casual meetings, everyday observations that lead her to approach groups of people whose own story is worth being told because oftentimes it remains invisible and unheeded or is in decline. Her videos do not have the documentary style at all, but they are micro-narrations characterized by light tones and ironic twists, which highlight certain aspects of a given group, whose habits and rituals become aesthetic endeavours capable of reaffirming the present, of restoring the dignity of their story, of looking afresh at it and with less gloomy colours. A sort of creative re-processing of grief or a realisation of their own present through an aesthetic act.[Manuela Pacella] This essay (with text in English and an Italian translation) on Bertille Bak (Arras, 1983) covers a decade of the French artist's activity, from 2007 to 2017, identifying the key points, framing it in that historical-artistic context defined by Hal Foster as "artist as ethnographer" and comparing it with other artists on the international scene. Bertille Bak's works are the result of months of observation and coexistence with groups of individuals whose history is on the verge of extinction and who become co-producers of her films and many of her derivative objects. According to Manuela Pacella, collective participation - ranging from conception to acting, from scenography to sound - is the key point of Bertille Bak's methodology, to which is added the goal of creating a light and imaginary narrative, sometimes with ironic and burlesque tones. And it is precisely through the use of the fable and the accentuation of the artifact elements that Bak finds a poetic shortcut to tell the truth.

They subtly challenge our perception of the world and investigate reality: What is reality, what is illusion? What is true and what is false? The paintings by both artists are designed to trick the eye. In his own unique style, Jochen M羹hlenbrink creates a semblance of reality by imitating various materials that deceive viewers with their realism. Cardboard, plastic foil, adhesive tape, stacks of pictures leaning against a wall, used pizza boxes, or dry bread - M羹hlenbrink paints light, shadows, brilliant reflections, surfaces, and signs of wear and tear in such lifelike detail that people sometimes fail to notice that they are looking at a painting. David Czupryn takes an opposite approach. He does not aim to trick us into believing that his surreal visual worlds are real. His images recall theater stages where human hybrids appear next to carefully arranged still lifes whose different textures are meticulously depicted. In the spirit of classical trompe-l'oeil painting, Czupryn is a master of aesthetic deception who translates the pictorial language and techniques of past ages into the present and skillfully integrates numerous references to the history of art and religion, iconography and allegory, politics and society into his paintings.
