Inner Portraits
A collection of Stanslav Szukalski's portraiture works, including essays and background on many of the artworks. Inner Portraits provides a major survey of Szukalski's work as draftsman, painter, and sculptor. This is a new edition: upgraded, expanded, and newly re-designed. Many images and texts in this edition have never been published before. Stanislav Szukalski (1893 1987) was an artist, anthropologist, and member of Chicago's artistic elite during the 1920s who spent his last years in obscurity. Today he is remembered for his political and scientific views and his brilliant sculptures. Highly regarded in both the US and Poland between the World Wars, he lapsed into obscurity, living and working "America's Cultural Siberia" (Southern California) until comic art collector Glenn Bray rediscovered him in 1973. Szukalski is now the subject of the critically acclaimed 2018 Netflix documentary Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski directed by Irek Dobrowolski and produced by Leonard DiCaprio.

Laurent Grasso
Known for installations exploring science, natural phenomena, and contemporary mythologies, French artist Laurent Grasso presents a visual journey of his avant-garde, conceptual work. Drawing on the visual possibilities of electromagnetic energy, radio waves, and natural phenomena, French conceptual artist Laurent Grasso explores their effect on our perception via immersive videos, sculptures, paintings, and drawings that resort to images or techniques borrowed from cinema or art history. At the crossroads of heterogeneous temporalities, geographies, and realities, his installations play with shifting viewpoints, boundaries between fiction and reality, and unusual perspectives. This tome explores the artist's manipulations of what we perceive to be time's consistency, showcasing artworks merging a wide range of interests, including scientific speculations and fictions; natural catastrophes; and representations of power and authority. This questioning of time appears in Grasso's Studies into the Past paintings, created using historically accurate techniques, which reconstruct our perception of the reality of another era to create a "false historical memory." Vibrant photographs display his unique pieces, while astute observations from some of the world's foremost art critics offer insight into Grasso's approach.
Conversations
Ai Weiwei is one of the world's most acclaimed artists and dissidents. This book presents him in conversation with theorists, critics, journalists, and curators about key moments in his life and career. These wide-ranging conversations flow between topics such as his relationship with China, the meaning of citizenship, moving his studio to Lesbos to be on the front lines of the migrant crisis, how to make art, and technology as a tool for freedom or oppression. Ai opens up about his relationship to his father as a poet and as a dissident forced into hard labor in a small village after the Cultural Revolution. He shares his thoughts on formal education and the importance of finding your own way as an artist. New York--both the city and its people--were formative for Ai Weiwei, and he speaks eloquently about how these experiences continue to influence him. Ai conjures up scenes from his long relationship with the city: dropping out of Parsons School of Design because he couldn't afford tuition, making portraits in Washington Square Park as an undocumented immigrant in the 1980s, taking photos for the New York Times at demonstrations in Tompkins Square Park, and returning to set up the Good Fences Make Good Neighbors project across the city. These candid, spontaneous conversations reveal why Ai Weiwei has become such a major force in contemporary art and political life.
Tetsumi Kudo: Cultivation
The eerily prescient work of a near-forgotten Japanese artist, whose 1960s and '70s sculptures anticipate contemporary ecological anxietiesContemplating Japanese artist Tetsumi Kudo's (1935-90) work in the 21st century provokes a sense of the uncanny on multiple levels: grotesquely beautiful on their own, his abject sculptures seem to foretell today's environmental concerns with their depictions of ecological decay. Born in Osaka, Kudo's life was greatly impacted by the aftermath of the atomic bomb in 1945; this trauma compounded by the Vietnam War's ever-present atmosphere of destruction led to a consistent focus on dystopia and decomposition in his work. Kudo's fluorescent birdcages and blacklight terrariums are furnished with an assortment of sculptures and found objects: melted plastic flowers, colorful phallic chrysalises and dismembered resin body parts come together to convey a distinctly modern anxiety in regard to our ailing world. Kudo's work does not intend to provide comfort in the midst of crisis; rather, his pieces urge viewers to reflect on how we may or may not continue to survive in a world that we ourselves have ruined through pollution and consumerism. As the artist's work reaches a peak of topicality, this volume presents a focused selection of Kudo's pieces from the 1960s and 1970s that demonstrate a postwar awareness of the atomic bomb's effect on reproduction and the environment.

Arte e antropologia in Italia negli anni Settanta

Maybe the People Would Be the Times
In his second collection (after Kill All Your Darlings, 2007), Luc Sante pays homage to Patti Smith, Rene Ricard, and Georges Simenon; traces the history of tabloids; surveys the landscape that gave birth to the Beastie Boys; explores the back alleys of vernacular photography; sounds a threnody for the forgotten dead of New York City. The glue holding the collection together is autobiography. Every item carries deep personal significance, and most are rooted in lived experience, in particular Sante's youth on the Lower East Side of New York in the fertile 1970s and '80s. He traces his deep engagement with music, his experience of the city, his progression as an artist and observer, his love life and ambitions. Maybe the People Would Be the Times is organized as a series of sequences, in which one piece leads into the next. Memoir flows into essay, fiction into critical writing, humor into poetry, the pieces answering and echoing one another, examining subjects from multiple vantages. The collection shows Sante at his most lyrical, impassioned, and imaginative, a writer for whom every assignment brings the challenge of inventing a new form.

Kaws: He Eats Alone
A clothbound collection of KAWS' instantly recognizable riffs on pop culture, featuring bold graphics and a familiar cast of characters Few artists have managed to bridge the gap between high and low culture as seamlessly as KAWS has since his career took off in the 1990s: his iconic cartoon-inspired designs have graced fashion collections, vinyl figurines, and skateboards as well as canvases sold for millions of dollars. Frequently portraying familiar figures such as Mickey Mouse and Spongebob Squarepants with cauliflower ears and X'ed-out eyes, KAWS employs a sophisticated dark humor throughout his work, exploring the relationship between art and consumerism. This publication documents the artist's first exhibit in the Middle East, with more than 40 key pieces in sculpture and painting from the last two decades. The exhibit in Doha, Qatar, and its accompanying catalog also feature a number of KAWS' commercial collaborations alongside his 5-meter-tall sculpture Companion (Passing Through) and his inflatable 40-meter-tall piece Holiday. Bound in cloth, this volume is a gorgeous collection of KAWS' most exciting work. Brian Donnelly (born 1974), known professionally by his graffiti tag KAWS, is the mastermind behind one of today's most recognizable artistic brands. A graffiti artist since adolescence, Donnelly received his BFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 1996. He then worked as a background artist for animated TV programs before becoming an independent designer. He has worked with artists like Kanye West and collaborated with brands such as Supreme, Nike and Comme des Gar癟ons. He is currently represented by Skarstedt Gallery in New York.
Simple Pleasures
Simple Pleasures presents the first major critical assessment of works by the artist Doris Lee (1904-1983). Lee was one of the most recognized artists in America during the 1930s and 40s, and was a leading figure in the Woodstock Artist's Colony. Her oeuvre reveals a remarkable ability to merge the reduction of abstraction with the appeal of the everyday. In so doing, she offers one of the very rare examples of a coherent visual identity that successfully bridged the various artistic "camps" that formed with the shift in the art world in the post-World War II era.Doris Lee exploded onto the national scene in 1935 when her painting Thanksgiving was awarded the Art Institute of Chicago's Logan Prize and instigated the Sanity in Art movement in protest. Two years later, her painting Catastrophe was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Simple Pleasures explores this initial national recognition in the 1930s within the context of American Scene painting, and traces the artist's thematic interest in the simple objects and scenes of the everyday through her career. It also examines the influence of the rise in abstraction during the late 1940s and 1950s, and the particular way in which this abstraction found resonance with Lee's long-held interest in, and collections of, folk and non-western art. During this post-war period, Lee, like many of her American Scene colleagues, found lucrative work in the heyday of commercial advertising. Lee's commercial commissions for patrons such as American Tobacco Company, Life magazine, Abbott Laboratories, and Associated American Artists are especially compelling in both their populist accessibility and in their deceptively sophisticated abstraction. Sixty-five works by the artist span the 1930s through the 1960s and are comprised of paintings, drawings, prints, and commissioned commercial designs in fabric and pottery. Included are advertisements by companies that commissioned images from Lee, and photographs that contextualize the artist's work within the Woodstock artist's community.
The Whimsical World of Marion Wright

Sometimes quirky, sometimes downright funny, author and artist Marion Wright gives you the best of her well-nourished imagination. Wright has exhibited her work around the world, but her favorite part of any exhibit is watching people's expressions as they go by her paintings. There's is too much sadness in the world, and this is one artist's way to help people to be happier.

William N. Copley: Selected Writings
Essays and conversations from the unclassifiable American advocate for surrealism and predecessor of pop art, William N. CopleyFor readers interested in the extraordinary life, work, and artistic milieu of the great American surrealist and proto-pop painter William Nelson Copley (1919-96), this volume will come as a thrilling revelation and a long-awaited peek into the mind of one of 20th-century art's most influential yet least recognized protagonists. Though best known for his radical work as a painter--which he pursued under the name CPLY--Copley was also a talented writer and the texts gathered here present his most significant essays, articles and conversations. Among Copley's reflections on art and artists is "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dealer," a vividly humorous account of his brief tenure as a dealer in surrealist art in 1940s Los Angeles. Also included are key interviews and correspondence illuminating Copley's own practice and a selection of his newspaper articles, originally published in the 1950s and reprinted now for the first time.
Mannahatta
This book features a series of artworks that celebrate the architectural history of Manhattan. As a life-long New Yorker, Marilyn Henrion's vision has always been deeply rooted in the urban geometry of her surroundings, from the earlier geometric abstractions to the more recent mixed media works. She is particularly interested in the co-existence of past and present, especially in architecture and other man-made structures. Built during different periods in the history of Manhattan, we can delight in seeing them simultaneously, often side by side Both above and below ground, these rich visual treats abound as she makes her way through her neighborhood streets of Soho, lower Manhattan and beyond. Throughout the ages, the presence of the human hand upon the landscape has always expressed our eternal yearning for immortality, evidence that says "I was once here". Much as Edward Hopper did in the 20th century, Henrion synthesizes and transforms the "facts" of the material world to reflect her experience of a particular place. Whether focusing on historic landmarks with new eyes, or construction sites that testify to the vibrant ever-evolving cityscape, her objective is to illuminate beauty in unexpected places...a subway entrance, a doorway, a fire escape, a rooftop. An insightful essay by Ulysses Grant Dietz, Chief Curator Emeritus, the Newark Museum of Art, introduces the work.

It is almost as if each work has its own life and its own past.""Like dusty pressed flower petals unearthed from a long-forgotten trunk in the attic, Jennifer's Collages ache with hidden stories and desires half-met. Her characters are doe eyed Silent Era theater beauties, pale gilded fashion icons, and folkloric dreamers, all frozen in time."
ThorvaldsenCollector of Plaster Casts from Antiquity and the Early Modern Period
The Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), who lived most of his life in Rome, was not only one of Europe's most soughtafter artists; he was also a collector. In addition to his own works and drawings, he built extensive collections of paintings, prints, drawings and books - and of ancient artefacts from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity: coins, lockets, containers, vases, lamps, fragments of sculpture and more. He also acquired a large collection of plaster casts, primarily after ancient sculptures and reliefs, but also of works dating from the Renaissance and up until his own lifetime. Thanks to Thorvaldsen's bequest to the city of Copenhagen, his birthplace, all of these collections are still largely intact and well preserved at his museum. Home to a total of 657 plaster casts, the Thorvaldsen Museum's cast collection is unique for several reasons: The collection offers us insight into the sculptor's working methods and the development of his work because it served a clear function as an image bank of forms, motifs and subjects for Thorvaldsen's own endeavours. Furthermore, the dual fact that the collection is so well preserved and was established over a relatively brief period of time makes it a valuable example illuminating the trade and distribution of plaster casts during the first half of the nineteenth century. These areas of study form the central focal point of Volume I of this publication. Volume II contains a catalogue of the individual objects in the cast collection, while Volume III collects the overviews, inventories, concordances and primary sources referred to in the first two volumes. Arising out of many years of study of Thorvaldsen's cast collection conducted by their author, the classical archaeologist Jan Zahle, these books contain comprehensive source material from the period, much of it previously unknown.

Comestible 7-Day Meal Plan
What we eat has tremendous implications for our health, society, and the environment. Interweaving ethical, political, aesthetic, and poetic registers, Badani's seven messy and discomforting "recipes" invite the reader to consider the larger ecological landscape in which food and diet are part of the greater global narrative.Part ecological manifesto, part artistic parody, this provocative work - disguised as an easy-to-read cookbook - blends ideas about consumerism, power, experience, time, nature, innocence, hope, sin and salvation. Melding photography together with elements ranging from poetry to science to informed psychobabble, this 7-day "diet plan" is funny, whimsical, and refreshingly critical of the greed behind consumption.Pat Badani is a visual artist, writer and researcher who explores notions of utopia and dystopia through emergent art practices in works dealing with globalization, human migration, and ecological sustainability. Her works revitalize connections between food and cultures by scrutinizing the diets we eat.

Built to BurnTales of the Desert Carnies of Burning Man
BUILT TO BURN tells the story of how Tony, a San Francisco blues musician, became Coyote, builder of Burning Man's legendary city in the desert, and how he came to lead a ragtag band of circus runaways, freaks and geeks that would become its Department of Public Works. In 1996, Tony was making a decent living as a musician, but his creative juices had run dry: one night onstage, he realized he'd just played an entire sax solo while thinking about his laundry. So when a wild-at-heart friend invites him to something called "Burning Man," he grabs his backpack and hops in the car, unaware that the experience ahead will not only turn him inside out, but alter the course of his life. An essential Burning Man origin story, BUILT TO BURN chronicles the wild uncertainty and creative chaos of the early days in the desert, when the event's future was under constant threat and the organizers were making everything up as they went along. It's a tale of struggle and survival, of friends made and friends lost, as Coyote and his misfit crew battle raging storms, crazed livestock, angry townsfolk and each other, locking horns with the real-life cowboys, Indians, outlaws and outcasts of Nevada's high desert frontier.Told with wry humor and a bit of cowboy philosophy, BUILT TO BURN invites the reader to experience Burning Man as it was before it got civilized, when it was as wild and untamed as anything out of the Old West.

(UN)IMAGINABLEThe Pandemic SeriesWorldwide Pandemic? Honestly, who would've believed this could happen? Not me. But it did.I was laid off from my day job on March 18th, and all of a sudden told to stay home for the unforeseeable future. After ten days of feeling unsettled and maybe a little scared, I decided to do what I love. I started to paint. The decision I made was to paint one painting a day until the self isolation was over. I had no idea how long that would be, but I finally had the time to be a full-time artist. Every day, with every painting, I wrote about how I was feeling - little thoughts that were reactions to social media or the news or conversations with friends. This was an unprecedented time and emotions and opinions were flying. I went back to work on May 22, #56 of my Pandemic Series, and decided that I would end on #60. This is an Art Book first and foremost. But it is also a journal of my experience through a crazy time.

There Is No Soundtrack
There is no soundtrack is a study of how sound and image produce meaning in contemporary experimental media art by artists ranging from Chantal Akerman to Nam June Paik to Tanya Tagaq. It contextualises these works and artists through key ideas in sound studies: voice, noise, listening, the soundscape and more. The book argues that experimental media art produces radical and new audio-visual relationships challenging the visually dominated discourses in art, media and the human sciences. In addition to directly addressing what Jonathan Sterne calls 'visual hegemony', it also explores the lack of diversity within sound studies by focusing on practitioners from transnational and diverse backgrounds. As such, it contributes to a growing interdisciplinary scholarship, building new, more complex and reverberating frameworks to collectively sonify the study of culture.
Robert Lepage’s Original Stage Productions
This book explores the development of Robert Lepage's distinctive approach to stage direction in the early (1984-1994) and middle (1995-2008) stages of his career, arguing that globalisation had a defining effect on shaping his aesthetic and his professional trajectory. In addition to globalisation theory, the book draws on cinema studies, queer theory, and theories of affect and reception. Each of six chapters treats a particular aspect of globalisation, using this as a means to explore one or more of Lepage's productions. Productions discussed include The Dragon's Trilogy, Needles and Opium, and The Far Side of the Moon.Making theatre global: Robert Lepage's original stage productions will be of interest to scholars of contemporary theatre, advanced-level undergraduates, and arts lovers keen for new perspectives on one of the most talked-about theatre artists of the early 21st century.
Sean Keating in Context
Se獺n Keating in Context: Responses to Culture and Politics in Post-Civil War Ireland offers, for the first time, a comprehensive compilation and contextual analysis of Keating's articles and broadcasts between 1924 and1972. The introduction to the book examines the context of his thoughts on culture, politics, and economics. Moreover, given the present economic conditions in Ireland and further afield, the content of Keating's articles and broadcasts is prophetic, poignant, and amusing. The book is a precursor to the author's forthcoming full-scale monograph on the artist.

Technological evolution and obsolescence on Earth and in outer space, in a new project by artist Julia ChristensenThis volume documents an ongoing investigation by artist Julia Christensen (born 1976) into how our relentless "upgrade culture"--the perceived notion that we need to constantly upgrade our electronics to remain relevant--fundamentally impacts our experience of time. In a personal narrative interspersed with related interdisciplinary artwork and conversations with experts from different fields (other artists, archivists, academics), Christensen takes readers along a path from the international "e-waste" industry to institutional archives, eventually leading her to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). At JPL, Christensen began a dialog with a group of exo-planetary scientists, engineers and machine learning experts to develop long-lived space mission concepts that include an update of the Voyager spacecrafts' 1977 "Golden Record," to be embedded on a hypothetical future interstellar spacecraft. She and the scientists are designing an artwork generated by an extraterrestrial system that tells a distinctly new story of life on Earth. In taking on this challenge, Christensen--a female pioneer redefining the intersection of art, technology, and outer space--must envision an artwork for an evolving, autonomously-upgrading spaceship headed toward a potentially habitable planet in another star system. Her years-long investigation into upgrade culture leads to design concepts that potentially transcend technological obsolescence altogether.
