Arthur Rackham

Van Eyck
Often imitated but never equaled, Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) left an indelible impression on Renaissance art and paved the way for future realist painters. With its unprecedented precision and masterful use of color, Arnolfini Double Portrait, depicting the wedding of a young couple, is testament to the mastery of the Flemish painter and leader of the Early Netherlandish school. Van Eyck painted both secular and religious subject matter, emphasizing a naturalism and realism that moved seamlessly between 15th-century everyday life and poetic, heavenly settings. Working with oil paint, he innovated the medium, allowing for great intensity and depth of color. Trace the artist's impressive oeuvre in this hardcover survey of his work, including altarpieces, religious figures, and commissioned portraits. Featuring enlarged details and close analyses of masterpieces like the Ghent Altarpiece, this publication also offers a chronology of van Eyck's production, including the output of his workshop which continued even after his death.

The Great Big Book of Haiku
THE GREAT BIG BOOK OF HAIKU: 365 Haiku Poems is a poetry anthology for adult readers. It is a satire on adulthood in that the older we get, the less we live life in the moment. The design of this text is such that there are 365 poems, one for every day of the year. Instead of writing a book of poems for children to read one each night at bedtime, they are for adults to read one each morning of the year upon waking up. Setting a vision for your day, you are now conscious of each moment you're participating in.A haiku poem is based on a single moment in time, and that's what gives it personality. This personality is what will inspire you to live more in the present. The structure of a haiku poem is short, only three lines, containing 5 syllables, then 7, and then 5 again. This addition and then subtractionof an even number using a base of odd numbers also reflects the moral of this story in that balance is thought of as a binary, but in life there are much more than only two sides. Each poem was written by starting with a brainstorm on the most intense moment of the day. Every day, for one year, I wrote down the most intense moment or moments I had. Positive and negative. I scrapbooked each cardof moment(s) using keywords and images from magazines so that when I returned to them, I would have a lot of inspiration. Then, the following year, I turned them into haiku poems. This collection took more than two years to create, because after that I had to type them all up, edit them, and secure the rest of the book's structure. This anthology is my gift to every adult who seeks solace in the art of poetry.
A Baker’s Dozen
A BAKER'S DOZEN is a collection of 156 poems that satirize the structures of the world. Calling into question the different templates we see in the world in the pattern of 12, or a dozen, by adding in one extra for good measure, "a baker's dozen," the reader is able to learn how they can participate in society by finding their own unique niche. The title refers to the specific structure of the poetry sections within: that there are 13 groups of 12 poems each. A total of 156. These groups can be viewed as themes, such as months, horoscopes, colours, numbers, and so on. Within each of these 13 groups, there are 12 poems written, such as January, February, March; or, black, grey, white. By utilizing both 13 and 12 as forms of structure, one can see the difference between a rigid structure and how to participate in it fluidly (12 + 1 = 13).The title also is a clever play on the fact that I am a baker who also loves poetry. I feel like so many things in life are an art form that we can just pour ourselves into-and I would say two of my favourite art forms are food and writing! They come together nicely in this symbology of life.Food is probably one of the most important parts of our day. We engage with it multiple times, in different ways, and often celebrate it by taking meals with others. Writing is similar, in that although it is often done alone, reading is the connecting action between author and audience that makes it a communal activity as well.Upon this recognition, we can use this fun rendition of structure to peel back the layers of conditioning and open ourselves to a more free form of living and understanding of life. Some of the poems are free-form, while others follow certain poetic structures such as haiku, to also fit in with the overarching symbology of the text.
Love, Life, Loss, and Longing
LOVE, LIFE, LOSS, AND LONGING is a poetry anthology separating poems about the philosophies of the world, or main aspects of reality, into four categories. Each of these categories serves in the text as a chapter, herein called books. The first section, LOVE, talks about the good. The second section, LIFE, discusses what is.The third section, LOSS, deals with the bad.The fourth section, LONGING, touches on what isn't.Together, all four make up what our emotions tap into when we experience things: the good, the bad, what is, and what isn't.The order of the poems starts with the two most positive renditions of philosophy, namely the good and what is.The second half of the text leads us into more difficult hurdles, such as the bad things and what doesn't really exist. The poems are not written in sequential order by date, nor alphabetical order, and are assembled entirely at random. This randomization reflects the way in which each of the four aspects come at us in the world. We never know when we will befeeling good or bad, or feeling a fulfillment vs. an absence. It is instinctive which of these categories a poem will falls into, and where they should be placed in sequence. This anthology uses words that all start with the letter L because of its special powers in terms of energy when it comes to language. At the end of the book, the reader should be able to relate to many of the poems and be able to have a more positive outlook on life overall, knowing that even though sometimes things are bad, they can also be really, really good. And if we didn't have the absence of things, we wouldn't appreciate them when they are there.

From January to May 2020, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presented the first large-scale European retrospective devoted to photographer Claudia Andujar (born 1931). This exhibition highlights Andujar's extraordinary contribution to the art of photography and the defense of human rights, as well as the preservation of the environment and cultural diversity. This book presents Andujar's photography along with excerpts from her notebooks and texts by exhibition curator Thyago Nogueira and Bruce Albert, an anthropologist who spent time living with the Yanomami, as well as a map of Yanomami territory and a chronology that documents both the artist's commitment to their cause and the history of one of the last tribes of the Amazon rainforest.
Foreign Sounds or Sounds Foreign
John Yau has long championed the overlooked, neglected, and misunderstood. Foreign Sounds or Sounds Foreign brings together a selection of reviews and essays touching upon a wide range of subjects. The result is a decidedly alternative view of what to pay attention to-to what might actually be new as opposed to what passes for the new. Yau's subjects include the film stars, Anna May Wong and Sessue Hayakawa; the poets Clark Coolidge, Marilyn Chin, Christopher Middleton, Donna Stonecipher, and Ed Roberson; the filmmakers Leni Riefenstahl and Patty Chang, the collagist John Ashbery, the novelists Frederick Tuten and Amanda Lee Koe, and the photographers Rudy Burckhardt and Ai Weiwei. No other reviewer has written so astutely about such a wildly diverse range of subjects.

Edward Hopper: A to Z
From "Cape Cod" to "Time," an illustrated guide to the keywords of Edward Hopper's iconographyThe distinctive melancholy found in Edward Hopper's (1882-1967) paintings often leads viewers to wonder about the more intimate details of the artist's life. Where exactly did this master of loneliness live and work? What influenced him most while he was working on his great paintings of America? In this wonderful, simply structured A-to-Z book, Ulf K羹ster pursues these themes, telling us a great deal about the painter and his interests without losing sight of the work itself. K羹ster takes us through the ABCs of Hopper's life and work, from "American landscape," "Buick," "Cape Cod," "Dos Passos," "El[evated] Train," "Frost," "Goethe," "House," "Illustration" and "Josie" to "Shadow and Sunlight"--and of course the keyword, "Time." On the way he opens up many new doors and insights, enriching the views of Hopper's paintings and the possible reinterpretation of them. Touching on lesser-known facets of the artist's life such as his passion for literature, as well as his early pursuits in illustration as a career, this entertaining and informative book provides a closer look into the life of this master in American realism, who continues to be a source of inspiration for countless painters, photographers and filmmakers today.
C矇zanne at the Whitworth
An elegant compilation of C矇zanne's drawings and prints from the collection of the late Karsten SchubertIn honor of the generous bequest by the late Karsten Schubert, founder of Ridinghouse, to the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, this luxurious book, featuring a tipped-on cover drawing, focuses exclusively on Paul C矇zanne's (1839-1906) drawings and prints of diverse subjects: from portraits and bather scenes to landscapes and copies after past art. This important act of generosity means that the Whitworth now holds the best collection of C矇zanne works on paper in the UK, including a version of every print produced by the artist. With essays by renowned Impressionist scholars Richard Thomson and Christopher Lloyd and full catalog entries on all the works in the show, this volume demonstrates that the essence of C矇zanne as an artist lies just as much in his lesser-known works on paper as in his paintings.

Even When Fall Is Here
A conversation between an artist and a gardener in the California border-landscape about creation, change, and loss. An intertextual, fictionalized narrative weaves together several years of Mexican artist Erick Meyenberg's observations, research, video recordings, and paintings based on logbooks kept by gardener Chris Shea. Meyenberg's conversations with Shea about his ephemeral landscape infer the change and loss inherent in human life and propels the deep emotional intelligence of this bilingual book as it reflects on time, creation, and the inspiration of the natural world. Shea's remarkable, nuanced, and delicate language for color is reflected in Meyenberg's layered appreciation for the garden Shea tended until the end of his life. Eloisa Haudenschild, Director of inSite, commissioned Meyenberg's project with Shea for haudenschildGarage in La Jolla, California, and enlisted curator Ruth Est矇vez, the text's author. For more information about the project see the haudenschildGarage website or DoppelHouse.com. Note: This book has two parts, one in English, one in Spanish.

Winged Clouds and Cobalt Skies
Talent, long study, and much hard work produce great art, ordinarily the work of a single person. On the other hand, elements of greatness sometimes find each other, meld, and produce beauty greater than the sum of the parts. So it is with Winged Clouds and Cobalt Skies. Three artists, Frank Reaugh, Lucretia Donnell, and her mother Lucretia, united their talents to do what all great art does: enrich the culture and the lives of others. From 1889 until 1941 Frank Reaugh routinely sketch-tripped the vast and then wild land in the High Plains of Texas and occasionally beyond. In 1905 he began taking his students along for on-the-scene instruction, each being assigned a work detail to keep the party disciplined and moving smoothly, including the keeping of a trip log. On these sketch trips in the 1930s, the teenaged Lucretia Donnell, among other duties, kept the log with apparent thoroughness (at least enough to satisfy Frank Reaugh) but more importantly for us, with perceptivity and all the exuberance of youth, none of which she lost in the intervening years. Little did anyone know in the 1930s that she was writing a book for the ages.
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van BruggenKansas City’s Shuttlecocks
Claes Olderburg and Coosje van Bruggen: Kansas City's Shuttlecocks is a study of the commission and vicissitudes of a project by the world-renowned sculptors Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen for a major art museum and a public setting. The controversy that the commission initiated presented a challenge to explain a misunderstood work of art in an attempt to confirm the rightness of its acceptance. It is important for the reader to appreciate how artists resolve conflicts, how modern art functions, and to understand something of the cognitive issues undertaken by collaborative artists in the creative process.About the AuthorThe author, a native of Detroit, retired as Emeritus Professor Art History at Case Western Reserve University 2010. He pursued graduate degrees at the University of Illinois (chemistry) and the University of Minnesota (art history). He is the award-winning author of more than a dozen books on such topics as Italian Renaissance art treatises, Master Drawings, Vatican tomb sculpture, late Baroque Roman architecture, and scores of wide-ranging scholarly articles and reviews on the sculpture of Praxiteles, Donatello and Pollaiuolo, Michelangelo's drawings, Italian Mannerist architecture, caricature drawings, Goya's portraits and Black Paintings, drawings by Degas, and Picasso's Blue Period. He is completing a critical study and translation of Giulio Mancini's "Considerazioni sulla pittura" of 1621, and a project involving infrared reflectance spectroscopy and X-radiation studies of easel paintings by Raphael.
Martin Firrell
Curator Barbara Ulbrist surveys the art of Martin Firrell focusing on the years 2018-2020. During this time the artist displayed 40 different artworks on billboards across the UK bringing his particular variety of 'art as debate' to the majority of the country's towns and cities.Lavishly illustrated in colour, this volume explores the questions, what do these artworks convey en masse? What sense of the conscience of our times do they portray? And what do they say about the artist at this point in his development?'The attempt to answer these questions is perhaps one of the most interesting and valuable parts of the curatorial process.'The expressive power of Firrell's works lies undoubtedly in the elucidatory force of his direct and spare language. His works are plain speaking, Germanic almost.'They deal in the imagination of protest. They are powered by a subterranean indignation at the unfairness of the world but that indignation is transmuted into wit, telling observation, and an apparent and touching concern for the world.'Barbara Ulbrist Curator, Basel Switzerland
Contemporary Sculpture and the Critique of Display Cultures
In this book, Dan Adler addresses recent tendencies in contemporary art toward assemblage sculpture and how these works incorporate tainted materials - often things left on the side of the road - and combine them in ways that allow each element to retain a degree of empirical specificity.
A Passion for VincentAPassion for VincentThe man, his art and the places that inspired him
In this meticulously researched book, Stuart MacPherson tells the story of one of the greatest and most renowned artists the world has ever seen, Van Gogh.Stuart travelled across France, taking photographs of the places that so inspired Vincent to paint so magnificently. The struggles the painter had with alcohol, his mental health and his untimely death. Despite that, this book is a celebration of the life and genius of Van Gogh.Unfortunately, Stuart did not live to see this work published, but it is a truly beautiful memorial to his passion for Vincent.

The Fabulous Ekphrastic Fantastic!
"A river's edge, if approached too close, can sweep a body beyond itself." In The Fabulous Ekphrastic Fantastic!, Miah Jeffra perfects apostrophe as canticle, a host of heroes beckoning the reader a knee deeper into the waters of another selfhood, Madonna, Mary Shelley, Felix Gonzalez Torres, Plato, and Jeffra's mother among them. At once gossamer and gauze, Jeffra explores the nature of gender, sexuality, aesthetics, and love, taking a tiny hammer to the stability of the limits of perception, troubling the tether between perception and memory. At once memoir and cultural criticism, The Fabulous Ekphrastic Fantastic! discovers itself as a book about forgiveness, family, and the truths we find in "the lightness of a door," "the probability of a radio," the long line between one story and another.

Think of Them as Spaces
An exploration of Brice Marden's draftsmanship and the catalytic role the medium of drawing plays in his larger oeuvre In 1979, Brice Marden (b. 1938) asked that his drawings be thought of "as spaces," reflecting the idea that drawing is a medium that is much more than its two physical dimensions. Looking closely at six series of drawings that span nearly the entirety of Marden's ongoing career, this luxuriously illustrated presentation features works spanning from 1975 to 2019, including the never-before-published Letters from Borobudur of 2010. In addition to rarely seen early monochrome works, three groups of 1979-80s drawings--Mirabelle Addenda, Shell, and Cold Mountain Studies--foreshadow the artist's mature linear work and highlight the process of invention and permutation that occurs as Marden thinks and draws on paper. A concise overview of Marden's drawing practice investigates the geographies and methods that inform his work, while an artist interview offers insight into how Marden uses the medium as a means of exploring the creation of spaces on drawing surfaces. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs.
