Creepy-But-Cute
Following "Robot Dreams", Kriev publishes his second art book "Creepy-But-Cute". This new collection of paintings focuses on the artist's Gothic and macabre work. The imagery is often melancholic and sometimes disturbing, but always compelling. The depiction of children with a wistful stitched-lip smile and vacuous eyes may be unsettling to the casual beholder. But behind this Gothic fa癟ade, compassion and tenderness are often present. So, as creepy as these little paintings may seem, they are, above all, meant to be cute.
Giger
Swiss artist HR Giger (1940-2014) is most famous for his creation of the space monster in Ridley Scott's 1979 horror sci-fi film Alien, which earned him an Oscar. In retrospect, this was just one of the most popular expressions of Giger's biomechanical arsenal of creatures, which consistently merged hybrids of human and machine into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. The visions drew on demons of the past, harking back as far as Giger's earliest childhood fears as well as evoking mythologies for the future. Above all, they gave expression to the collective fears and fantasies of his age: fear of the atom, of pollution and wasted resources, and of a future in which our bodies depend on machines for survival. From surrealist dream landscapes created with a spray gun and stencils to album cover designs, from guillotine-like sculptures to self-designed bars, Giger personally guides us through his multi-faceted universe in this definitive introduction to a master of horror. Detailed reproductions and designs and a foreword by Timothy Leary complement Giger's intimate autobiographical texts.
Adding the Blue
'I always thought I would get into painting, but I got waylaid by rock 'n' roll. Finally, I thought, "Now's the time." As soon as I was in a situation where I could be alone and paint without any interruptions, I just couldn't stop.' - Chrissie Hynde 'These paintings wake me up, show me life, make me want to get up and do something.' - Brian Eno 'The fact that Chrissie is a great musician underpins her painting in a variety of ways... She learns by doing and in the process her work becomes more distinctive and compelling, an expression of the life force within made visible.' - Tim Marlow, Royal Academy of Arts In November 2015, Chrissie Hynde, the singer, songwriter and leader of The Pretenders, produced an oil painting of a ceramic vase. Fulfilling an intention that she would, one day, dedicate herself to painting, it would prove to be the starting point for Hynde's first body of work, nearly 200 canvases in all. These paintings are shared for the first time in Adding The Blue. With Forewords by visionary musician and artist, Brian Eno, and The Royal Academy's artistic Director, Tim Marlow, Adding The Blue is captioned throughout with Chrissie Hynde's thoughts and reflections. Beginning with still life studies and culminating in vibrant abstract compositions, Chrissie Hynde's Adding The Blue is a beautiful volume of paintings that are, in Eno's words, 'full of life, love and discovery'.

Mark Rothko
"The journey to understand the painting is also the journey to understand Rothko, because the work is so thoroughly suffused with the man."--Christopher Rothko Mark Rothko (1903-1970), world-renowned icon of Abstract Expressionism, is rediscovered in this wholly original examination of his art and life written by his son. Synthesizing rigorous critique with personal anecdotes, Christopher, the younger of the artist's two children, offers a unique perspective on this modern master. Christopher Rothko draws on an intimate knowledge of the artworks to present eighteen essays that look closely at the paintings and explore the ways in which they foster a profound connection between viewer and artist through form, color, and scale. The prominent commissions for the Rothko Chapel in Houston and the Seagram Building murals in New York receive extended treatment, as do many of the lesser-known and underappreciated aspects of Rothko's oeuvre, including reassessments of his late dark canvases and his formidable body of works on paper. The author also discusses the artist's writings of the 1930s and 1940s, the significance of music to the artist, and our enduring struggles with visual abstraction in the contemporary era. Finally, Christopher Rothko writes movingly about his role as the artist's son, his commonalities with his father, and the terms of the relationship they forged during the writer's childhood. Mark Rothko: From the Inside Out is a thoughtful reexamination of the legendary artist, serving as a passionate introduction for readers new to his work and offering a fresh perspective to those who know it well.
Francis Pavy
Visions was born out of interviews Alexandre Leupin had with Francis X. Pavy, a significant painter of Southern culture with a career spanning five decades. This three-part book begins with a general introduction situating Pavy in the history of painting, and underscoring his radical authenticity and originality, as well as a universality paradoxically stemming from his deep regional connection. The second part reproduces Leupin and Pavy's interviews over the years, where Pavy's artistic beginnings, his technique, his vision, and the origins of his creations are discussed. In the third section, entitled "Pavicons", Pavy presents the sources of his artistic inspiration and the recurrent themes that run through his body of work through a large sample of his iconographic elements.

A Middle-Earth Traveler
A Middle-earth Traveler is an illustrated guide to J. R. R. Tolkien's most famous creation, with lavish art showing the many locations and characters the author described in his classic novels, along with notes on their importance to the world--the perfect gift for Tolkien enthusiasts. A Middle-earth Traveler presents a walking tour of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, visiting not only places central to his stories, but also those just over the hill or beyond the horizon. Events from Tolkien's books are explored--battles of the different ages that are almost legend by the time of The Lord of the Rings; lost kingdoms and ancient myths, as well as those places only hinted at: kingdoms of the far North and lands beyond the seas.Sketches that have an 'on-the-spot' feel to them are interwoven with the artist's observations gleaned from Tolkien's books and recollections of his time spent in Middle-earth while working alongside Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Combining concept work produced for films, existing Middle-earth art, and many new paintings and sketches exclusive to this book, A Middle-earth Traveler will take the reader on a unique and unforgettable journey across Tolkien's magical landscape.
F*ck the Patriarchy
It's Time to Step Up. It's time for us to band together-women and men-to put an end to the toxic patriarchy we're living in. Let's be clear, patriarchy is NOT men. It's a system in which men hold all the power and women are largely excluded. That's the world we're still inexplicably living in. It's time to build a truly equitable democracy that we can be proud to pass on to future generations. A future in which all our sons will grow up to be responsible and respectful, without a hint of entitlement. A future in which all our daughters will not have a plethora of #MeToo stories, where sexual harassment or assault will be the rare exception, not the rule. And that's what this coloring book is for. To inspire you to be heard, be seen, and be believed. To KNOW you matter. To keep fighting for your rights, keep fighting to make this world a better place. Between these pages, you'll find 38 beautiful, single-sided frameable designs with stirring messages to remind you of the power you hold, to embrace your well-justified anger and channel it to effect change. We CAN do it. We MUST do it. Let's get smashing. *A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to nonprofit organizations that empower women. Because fuck the patriarchy.

Ellie Ga
In the murky waters of the Mediterranean lie the ruins of Alexandria's fabled lighthouse, a wonder of the ancient world destroyed by earthquakes in the Middle Ages. While mapped by archeologists, most of these 2,000 stone remnants will never be retrieved and reconstructed: the Pharos Lighthouse can only be inferred. But above the surface, the lighthouse is ubiquitous in the modern city, its image wholly imagined, with little resemblance to the stones at the bottom of the sea.In a richly braided, intimately told narrative of text and image, New York-born artist and writer Ellie Ga (born 1976) takes the reader with her on dive boats and into the water, behind the walls of hidden museums, through city streets pasted with political graffiti, into the offices of archeologists and the homes of Alexandrians--just as Egypt is on the cusp of its first post-revolution election. Ga's investigations into the lighthouse chart the charged spaces between the historical and mythological, between the translated and untranslatable, between the unearthing of memory, the circumscription of the past and the potential of the present. Ga's subject is ostensibly the Pharos Lighthouse, but her own gorgeously constructed palimpsests reveal a multitude of possible truths: Square Octagon Circle becomes a prism through which to see the nature of the unknown.

Neil Gall
Neil Gall: The Drawings brings together nearly 60 works of paper by British artist Neil Gall, created from 2005 up to the present. The book will offer an overview of Gall's engagement with the medium of drawing and, in so doing, highlight this important thread running through his practice. Gall's works typically engage a range of cultural and art historical references, all of which operate within his own unique and precisely determined visual language. In recent years, the artist has developed a highly skilful and virtuosic approach to drawing, which involves a rendering of loosely constructed maquettes, assembled using coloured tape, translucent cellophane, ping-pong balls and other materials that he finds in his studio. Neil Gall was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and currently lives and works in London. He received his BA in Painting at Gray's School of Art and then attended Slade School of Art in London in 1991. His art has garnered him numerous awards in Great Britain, and his work is featured in prominent international collections including the Denver Art Museum, The Morgan Library, New York and the Zabludowicz Collection, London. Gall is represented by David Nolan Gallery in New York and Aurel Scheibler Gallery in Berlin.
Remington
The artists who came and formed the tight-knit northern New Mexican artistic community that flourished between the wars and later were as diverse as the styles they developed and brought with them. Not all, of course, were painting in the modern idiom, but it is undeniable that many of the most talented and interesting of these painters were. These diffuse elements fuse with a strong regional feeling in the art of the New Mexico modernists. The roots of this tradition lay in a centuries-old tradition of Western art, culture and myth. What is fascinating to today's viewer is to note how they worked to tap into the spirit and feeling of a land which was home to human culture for centuries before the white man arrived. What is truly fascinating is to see how well they succeeded in melding this ancient place with their own modern times. This catalogue explores the styles of 12 of the most important and influential artists including Andrew Dasburg, Frank Applegate, Emil Bisttram and Cady Wells.
Johannes Nagel
Happenstance and gesture play a central role in the creative work of the ceramicist Johannes Nagel (b. 1979). His objects, which are orientated towards traditional ideas of vessels but are also freely composed, examine the associations between form and idea. Using work techniques such as burrowing into sand to form negative figurations for casting, he successfully performs his work directly and manually, lending the process of searching a tangible presence. The publication focuses on Nagel's oeuvre from the last four years. Earlier work groups are also presented as highlights. The collector J繹rg Johnen and the philosopher Marcel Ren矇 Marburger set Nagel's work in relation to artistic tendencies of the twentieth century and shine a light on the intellectual-historical background of the gestural as an intermediary between the power of imagination and its manifestation in an object. Text in English and German.

Conversations With Diego Rivera
A year of weekly interviews (1949-1950) with artist Diego Rivera by poet Alfredo Cardona-Pe簽a disclose Rivera's iconoclastic views of life and the art world of that time. These intimate Sunday dialogues with what is surely the most influential Mexican artist of the twentieth century show us the free-flowing mind of a man who was a legend in his own time; an artist who escaped being lynched on more than one occasion, a painter so controversial that his public murals inspired movements, or, like the work commissioned by John D. Rockefeller, were ordered torn down. Here in his San Angel穩n studio, we hear Rivera's feelings about the elitist aspect of paintings in museums, his motivations to create public art for the people, and his memorable, unedited expositions on the art, culture, and politics of Mexico. The book has seven chapters that loosely follow the range of the author's questions and Rivera's answers. They begin with childlike, yet vast questions on the nature of art, run through Rivera's early memories and aesthetics, his views on popular art, his profound understanding of Mexican art and artists, the economics of art, random expositions on history or dreaming, and elegant analysis of art criticisms and critics. The work is all the more remarkable to have been captured between Rivera's inhumanly long working stints of six hours or even days without stop. In his rich introduction, author Cardona-Pe簽a describes the difficulty of gaining entrance to Rivera's inner sanctum, how government funtionaries and academics often waited hours to be seen, and his delicious victory. At eight p. m. the night of August 12, a slow, heavy-set, parsimonious Diego came in to where I was, speaking his Guanajuato version of English and kissing women's hands. I was able to explain my idea to him and he was immediately interested. He invited me into his studio, and while taking off his jacket, said, "Ask me..." And I asked one, two, twenty... I don't know how many questions 'til the small hours of the night, with him answering from memory, with an incredible accuracy, without pausing, without worrying much about what he might be saying, all of it spilling out in an unconscious and magical manner. A series of Alfredo Cardona-Pe簽a's weekly interviews with Rivera were published in 1949 and 1950 in the Mexican newspaper, El Nacional, for which Alfredo was a journalist. His book of compiled interviews with introduction and preface, El Monstruo en su Laberinto, was published in Spanish in 1965. Finally, this extraordinary and rare exchange has been translated for the first time into English by Alfredo's half-brother Alvaro Cardona Hine, also a poet. According to the translator's wife, Barbara Cardona-Hine, bringing the work into English was a labor of love for Alvaro, the fulfillment of a promise made to his brother in 1971 that he did not get to until the year before his own death in 2016.

Humanity
Writings on human life and the refugee crisis by the most important political artist of our time Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is widely known as an artist across media: sculpture, installation, photography, performance, and architecture. He is also one of the world's most important artist-activists and a powerful documentary filmmaker. His work and art call attention to attacks on democracy and free speech, abuses of human rights, and human displacement--often on an epic, international scale. This collection of quotations demonstrates the range of Ai Weiwei's thinking on humanity and mass migration, issues that have occupied him for decades. Selected from articles, interviews, and conversations, Ai Weiwei's words speak to the profound urgency of the global refugee crisis, the resilience and vulnerability of the human condition, and the role of art in providing a voice for the voiceless. Select quotations from the book: "This problem has such a long history, a human history. We are all refugees somehow, somewhere, and at some moment." "Allowing borders to determine your thinking is incompatible with the modern era." "Art is about aesthetics, about morals, about our beliefs in humanity. Without that there is simply no art." "I don't care what all people think. My work belongs to the people who have no voice."

Evan Penny
The latest sculptures from South African-born, Toronto-based artist Evan Penny (born 1953) are rooted in his longstanding interest in the human body and how viewers perceive their relationship with themselves and others. While Penny has expanded his sculptural repertoire by openly referencing art from other eras, Ask Your Body emphasizes the visceral manner in which viewers experience the works. The sculptures, several of which are monumentally scaled, can be described as meditations on the many conditions of being human: aspiring to be godlike and failing ("Marsyas"); the body subjected to the sacrifices and indignities of life on earth ("Homage to Holbein"); having one's body regarded as fragmented and dislocated ("Hanging Torso" and "Self Portrait after G矇ricault's Fragments Anatomiques"); and creating empathy through the imagined history of the artist's life, as represented by a fictional period from the past ("Young Self") and from the future ("Old Self").
David Smith
This comprehensive sourcebook is destined to become a lasting and definitive reference on the art and aesthetic philosophy of the American artist David Smith (1906-1965). A pioneer of twentieth-century modernism, Smith was renowned for the expansive formal and conceptual ambitions of his broadly diverse and inventive welded-steel abstractions. His groundbreaking achievements drew freely on cubism, surrealism, and constructivism, profoundly influencing later movements such as minimalism and environmental art. By radically challenging older conventions of monolithic figuration and refuting arbitrary distinctions between painters and sculptors, Smith asserted sculpture's equal role in advancing modern art. This compilation of Smith's poems, sketchbook notes, essays, lectures, letters to the editor, reviews, and interviews underscores the ways his writing articulated his private identity and promoted the social ideals that made him a key participant in contemporary discourses surrounding modernism, art and politics, and sculptural aesthetics. Each text is annotated by Susan J. Cooke with historical and contextual information that reflects Smith's process of continually reviewing and revising his writings in response to his evolving aspirations as a visual artist.
Beverly Barkat
A fascinating volume that offers an overview of Barkat's career. Beverly Barkat's painting is rooted in a profound and ongoing dialogue with art history. Her study and observation of the figurative and realistic tradition in Western art has resulted in her accumulating a body of knowledge that she draws on directly in her artistic practice. To achieve her aim of capturing the essence of the body in motion, Barkat has begun working on a large scale, using broad gestures that recall action painting. The best of her production, together with her latest works (large-scale painted PVC sheets), is illustrated in this book, her first.

Pucci De Rossi
-First-ever monograph on artist Pucci de Rossi -Filled with eye-catching images, both black-and-white and full-color An artist-designer who defies classification, Pucci de Rossi (1947-2013) was a pillar of the European art scene in the 1980s. Originally from Verona, and trained by the American sculptor H. B. Walker, Pucci de Rossi created his first pieces by assembling wooden furniture to make some rather odd-looking and unstable forms, somewhere between thrones and time machines. "My profession was a game to me," he once remarked. "I was cutting, I was making, I was inventing." His first designs, steeped in poetry and humor, recalled the minimalism of Arte Povera as much as Studio Memphis' neobaroque. Jewelry, furniture, sculpture, and painting: Pucci's universe knew no limits except those of his own imagination. In his hands, even the most modest materials transcended themselves to become works of great visual and functional power. This was soon recognized; after 1985 he regularly exhibited in Paris, and in New York at the gallery N矇ot羅, founded by Pierre Staudenmeyer. Some of his most notable accomplishments involve designing the layout for the Barbara Bui boutique in Paris, and the palace of the auctioneer Jean-Claude Binoche in Venice. In the 1990s his work was on display at the Downtown Gallery, and in 1994-1995 he collaborated with the CIRVA in Marseille. Shortly prior to his death, Jacques-Antoine Granjon, one of his most faithful collectors, commissioned a sketch for the frontage of the VentePriv矇e.com building in La Plaine-Saint-Denis. Baptized 'V矇rona', the metallic skin covering the fa癟ade, which was inspired by that drawing, pays tribute to him today. Pucci de Rossi created more than 900 pieces during his lifetime; this book gives him the commemoration he deserves. Text in English and French.
Causeries
Its title derived from the French word causer, meaning to chat or talk informally, Alexandre Singh: Causeries details a series of encounters between artist Alexandre Singh (born 1980) and various academics, writers, scientists and philosophers. In preparation for his ambitious play The Humans at Witte de With, Singh set up a public discussion series exploring the key themes and concerns of his developing play, such as dance, drama and religion (to name just a few). Aiming at an alternative form of public conversation, more relaxed than what is allowed at a symposium or conference, Singh engaged the invited speakers in deliberately informal conversations on such wide-ranging topics as Woody Allen, Hindu cosmogony, Aristophanes, South Park and scatology. This volume contains an edited selection of 29 of the public conversations conducted by Singh as part of the Causeries series.
Parallel Wings
- Features an extensive catalogue of many previously unseen works by the artist - Traces, for the first time, the evolution of the artist through various motifs and media employed by the artist in her extensive, impressive repertoire Spanning a wide spectrum of creative constructs emerging from varied ideations and genres, Rini Dhumal's art is rooted in India's culture and myth, coupled with her international exposure and imaginative spirit. A flexibility of approach adds an organic energy and innate beauty to Rini's art. With its focus on the inner feminine psyche, it explores the potential and challenges offered by different media, from two or three-dimensional work in clay or bronze, relief or graphic art. In a fine assimilation of abstraction, myth, landscape and conceptualization, her art is threaded with the face, form and figuration of the 'goddess' in various incarnations of Rini's own design. Her work also makes imaginative use of traditional Indian iconography - birds, animals and floral motifs all reminiscent of religious art, but re-purposed to create a new vocabulary of form and meaning. Rini's enduring art and aesthetics, with their distinct feel and flow, speak for a unique assimilation of the personal and universal. This book is an attempt to understand and appreciate the dramatis persona, review her creative journey and take the reader through the various stages of her life and work until the present, with its focus on an exceptionally impressive and extensively varied repertoire. Contents: Foreword; Creative Constructs; Immersed in Tradition; Catalogue; Ceramics; Rugs-Tapestry-Glass; Paintings and Drawings; Bronze; Artist Biography
