Reconstructing C矇zanne
A groundbreaking approach to the study of C矇zanne's works on paperThis book brings to light new research into the work of Paul C矇zanne (1839-1906), based on close examination of the DNA makeup that constitutes the papers he used for his watercolors and drawings. The book features in-depth analyses of the works in the show by Fabienne Ruppen, as well as extensive commentary on C矇zanne scholarship by Walter Feilchenfeldt, co-author of the artist's new catalogue raisonn矇. At the heart of the book are two watercolors that C矇zanne produced from a large sheet of paper, which he divided in two sections for the purpose of capturing different landscapes, La Montagne Sainte-Victoire, from 1885-87, and a Paysage Proven癟al. Reunited for the first time, these two parts of the same sheet exemplify Ruppen's research methods and the way these enable us to reconsider the dating of C矇zanne's work based on forensic evidence.

Christian Marclay: Sound Stories
Marclay fuses art and technology to draw on the sounds and images of life on SnapchatIn Sound Stories, American artist and composer Christian Marclay (born 1955) fuses art and technology, using Snapchat videos as raw material. Featuring texts by Max Maxwell, this book documents the collaboration between the artist and Snapchat in an innovative project mixing the sounds and images of everyday life found on the multimedia messaging app, aggregating unattributed stories. Using algorithms created by a team of engineers at Snap Inc., Marclay experiments with millions of publicly posted Snapchat videos to create five immersive audiovisual installations, two of which are interactive. The Organ, a five-octave keyboard and its bench, allows the spectators to trigger video segments and their matched sounds onto the wall. Rooted in a sampling aesthetic fundamental to Marclay's work, these installations respond to the storytelling available on Snapchat and visitors' sounds and movements in the gallery space.
Dorothy Iannone: The Story of Bern, [or] Showing Colors
A superb facsimile of Dorothy Ianonne's 1970 comic-book tale of censorship, sexuality and female autonomyAs much as Love and Eros have defined my work since its beginnings, so too has censorship, or its shadow, accompanied it," recalls Dorothy Iannone (born 1933) in her introduction to this facsimile publication of her legendary The Story of Bern, [or] Showing Colors. First published by Iannone and her then companion Dieter Roth in 1970, in an edition of 500, the book documents the censorship of Iannone's work The (Ta)Rot Pack (1968-69) and the subsequent removal of all his works by Roth, from a collective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern. For his exhibition titled Freunde, Friends, d'Fr羹nde, legendary curator Harald Szeemann invited Karl Gerstner, Roth, Daniel Spoerri and Andr矇 Thomkins to exhibit artist friends; Roth chose Iannone. The censorship of Iannone, and Roth's protest, eventually led to Harald Szeemann's resignation as the director of the institution. Telling the story of this act of censorship as well as the context of the exhibition in Bern and its iteration in a non-censored version in D羹sseldorf, The Story of Bern is emblematic of Iannone's distinctive, explicit and comic-book style, and of her openness about sexuality and the strengthening of female autonomy.
Erich Engelbrecht Introspective Images
Erich Engelbrecht (1928-2011) called his pictures 罈introspective竄. He remarks on this: 罈The introspective image inspects the arena of the soul, the field of operation of archetypes, which constitute the fundamental pattern of our behaviour.竄 He had no plan or idea for an artwork, merely an empty sheet of paper or canvas in front of him; he made himself receptive, waited, and allowed himself to be guided by the images, a process that he experienced very much as an ordeal and even as a threat to his existence. His wife Waltraud Engelbrecht would then try to 罈read竄 these images and to derive a coherence of meaning from correspondences of form and colour.

Hotel Chelsea
An immersive photographic tour of the legendary Chelsea Hotel, whose residents share their stories and reveal the delirious history of this landmark. Jackson Pollock, Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith, Dylan Thomas, Arthur Miller, Bob Dylan, Arthur C. Clarke, Andy Warhol, William S. Burroughs, Janis Joplin, Eugene O'Neill, Rufus Wainwright, Betsey Johnson, R. Crumb, Thomas Wolfe, Jasper Johns - these are just a few of the figures who at one time occupied one of the most alluring and storied residences ever: the Chelsea Hotel. Born during the Gilded Age and once the tallest building in New York, the twelve-story landmark has long been a magnet for artists, writers, musicians, and cultural provocateurs of all stripes. In this book, photographer Colin Miller and writer Ray Mock intimately portray the enduring bohemian spirit of the Chelsea Hotel through interviews with nearly two dozen current residents and richly detailed photographs of their unique spaces. As documented in Miller's abundant photographs, these apartments project the quirky decorating sensibilities of urban aesthetes who largely work in film, theater, and the visual arts, resulting in deliriously ornamental spaces with a kitschy edge. Weathering the overall homogenization of New York and the rapid transformation of the hotel itself - amid recent ownership changeovers and tenant lawsuits - residents remain in about seventy apartments while the rest of the units are converted to rentals (and revert to a hotel-stay basis, which had ceased in 2011). For the community of artists and intellectuals who remain, the uncertain status of the hotel is just another stage in a roller-coaster history. A fascinating portrait of a strand of resilient bohemian New Yorkers and their creative, deeply idiosyncratic homes, Hotel Chelsea is a rich visual and narrative document of a cultural destination as complicated as it is mythical.
Retrospective
With more than 80 reproductions of his work, Retrospective is the first published overview of Michael Tice's career. The book spans over five decades from the 1970's to the present day. Tice's early works are rooted in a sort of domestic surrealism that evolves into a more complex exploration of male sexuality and gender roles. Many of his images can be seen as a critique of the "American dream." His enduring interests in the domestic space, childhood innocence, and cultural nostalgia combined with his masterful use of color and texture brings to light an American past that, perhaps, only existed within the surreal landscape of the viewer's mind to begin with.

Arnaldo Pomodoro, 1956-65
Tornabuoni art returns to the origins of sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro's work (1926, Morciano di Romagna), specifically to the years 1956-1965, a pivotal period of the artist's production. His creations, initially derived from the goldsmithing produced side by side with the brothers Gio and Giorgio Perfetti, evolves towards small concrete and lead reliefs, then in large mural panels engraved with illegible glyphs, inspired by Mesopotamian tablets' cuneiform writing, Egyptian papyruses and Paul Klee's graphic style. In 1960, Pomodoro was among the founders of the group Continuit?, next to Novelli, Consagra, Tancredi, Dorazio and Fontana, preaching an 'aesthetic of continuity', defined as 'the absence, the incertitude of limit' and attached to the formal aspects of artworks. He thus produced his first Sfere, adopting gilded polished bronze as his preferred material of work, and of which the creation marks the definitive transition to monumental scale of his career. Today, Pomodoro's creations can be found in prestigious museum collections such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Vatican Museums. Moreover, his monumental artworks are exhibited in more than 40 public squares in major cities around the world. The artist lives and works in Milan, Italy. Contents: Essays: Arnaldo Pomodoro. A discordant tension by Luca Massimo Barbero; The art of Arnaldo Pomodoro within the French art exhibition and critical context; Piecing together the traces of a dialogue by Chiara Mari; Artworks. Text in English and Italian.
Elliott Green: At the Far Edge of the Known World
Elliott Green's radiant landscapes depict a world in unceasing motionThe autodidact painter Elliott Green (born 1960) came to New York City at age 21 to learn how to paint from scratch. Eight years later, an unsolicited envelope of 35mm slides he sent to an Upper East Side gallery resulted in a show, and his paintings were hanging alongside Warhols and de Koonings. In 2011, while in Italy as a recipient of the Rome Prize, he painted the first of the 112 landscapes featured in this volume. His work developed a new sense of space and landscape, characterized by panoramic, far-reaching vistas and geophysical features such as mountains, reservoirs and skies that seem to melt impossibly into pure gesture. Green's panoramas reveal worlds within worlds and convey emotion-in-nature with ferocity and frailty. Six commentaries by John Yau, David Ebony, Jana Prikryl, Arne Svenson, Gary Lucidon and Michael Rubiner reflect on the artist's work with illuminating perspectives. The book features French folds and four foldout posters.
Intelligence for Dummies
"Enclosed in this beautiful package, please find: an agile mind, a perfect style, a canny and undeceivable heart, and a welcome, enduring presence in the reader's life." --Michael Chabon A portrait of a keen social observer at the center of the last 50 years of cultural life, captured through a vivid selection of O'Brien's own writings on music to fashion to downtown art and, just as importantly and unexpectedly, the political temperature of America. Glenn O'Brien collaborated with visual artists, writers, fashion houses, and musicians throughout his almost 50-year career. Intelligence for Dummies gathers Glenn O'Brien's essays, aphorisms and tweets, to create a portrait of the artist as cultural bellwether, complimented by artwork and photographs from his collaborators. A full color, hardcover edition, Intelligence for Dummies is a deeply personal aper癟u into Patti Smith and Jean Michel Basquiat's New York, and the culture of money that ensued. It also reveals O'Brien's incisive and prescient understanding of America's political culture, and of our current president.
Carlo Zinelli
Carlo Zinelli, called Carlo (1916-1974), is one of the leading figures in Art Brut, along with Alo簿se Corbaz and Adolf W繹lfli. The book devoted to him by Collection de l'Art Brut, in Lausanne - the public institution that possesses the largest body of work by the Italian artist - gathers together a series of articles on Zinelli by experts in different disciplines. This makes it possible to give due weight to relatively neglected aspects of a rich and diverse opus, such as Carlo's writings, which mingle with his graphic compositions, well known for their characteristic accumulation of motifs, especially stylised human beings and animals, as well as vehicles. This bilingual book is lavishly illustrated throughout with reproductions of Zinelli's paintings and many photographs, several of which are by John Phillips, as well as previously unpublished archive material. Published to accompany an exhibition at Art Brut Collection, Lausanne, 7 June - 2 December 2019. Text in English and French.
Knowing and Seeing
In Knowing and Seeing, muralist Douglas Cooper reflects on his long career as a muralist in various cities around the world. Part memoir and part an examination of his art, Cooper looks back on his half-century career from two points of view. First, through personal anecdotes on site sketches and finished works, and secondly, on the intellectual roots of the works. Though the core ideas of his work began in Pittsburgh, Cooper has exhibited work and produced murals, up to 200 feet long, in Cologne, Rome, San Francisco, Seattle, Qatar, Frankfurt, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington DC. Memory has been a recurring theme in his art. All of Cooper's works are driven by a desire to combine his conception of place with his perception of it--knowing and seeing. Knowing and Seeing features personal essays and more than 240 color images, including early Christian and Renaissance paintings as well as contemporary murals and other illustrations of Cooper's unique work.
John Singer Sargent: His Life and Works in 500 Images
An American who spent most of his life in Europe, a portraitist who painted landscapes, a family man who never married, and an accomplished pianist who often entertained his sitters, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was one of the most influential portrait painters of his time, but he is also an enigma. Despite his huge body of work, we know little about Sargent the man. Truly international, he was acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, and was close friends with many of the leading artists, writers, actors and musicians of his generation. Over the course of his career, Sargent created roughly 900 oil paintings, more than 2,000 watercolours and a vast number of sketches and charcoal drawings. He travelled extensively, to Venice, the Tyrol, Capri, Corfu, Spain, France, England, Holland, the Middle East, Canada and across America. Wherever he went, he captured the people and the surroundings. Using the fluid brushwork that had been introduced by his friends the Impressionists, his portraits are intimate and experimental, conveying both superficial appearances and psychological depths, and his landscapes are atmospheric and immediate. Sargent was in constant demand for his portraits, and during his lifetime he was perceived as a far more significant artist than contemporary avant-garde painters such as Paul C矇zanne and Paul Gauguin, and he allied himself with one of the most progressive, independent ateliers in Paris. His style fused the spectacular Impressionistic brushwork with techniques he learned from both Old and Modern masters, combined with his interest in human psychology, all consolidated by his own adroit artistry. Yet during his life, as well as attracting such acclamation from across Europe and America, he provoked some scandal and condemnation, and after his death, he became judged adversely. As with many artists however, the wheel of favour eventually turned and once again, in the early 21st century, Sargent's work was reassessed and revalued and he is now considered one of the finest and most skilful sought-after painters. The first part of this informative book explores the life of Sargent and the times he lived in, and the second part is a magnificent gallery of his work, with details about each painting and its context, with expert analysis of his style and technique. This beautifully illustrated volume, with 500 reproductions and images, will be essential reading for anyone who would like to learn more about this intriguing artist, whom The Metropolitan Museum in New York called 'The Van Dyck of our times.'.
Human Energy
Sumi-e is a Japanese word for a style of black ink painting. Portraying the essence (Ch'i) of Nature in an individual brushstroke, with emphasis placed on the beauty of each stroke, rather than to mimic realism, is a vital ingredient of Sumi-e. This is an Art story picture book, each ink stroke evokes poetic imagery of the nature and energy of humans' being. 'Human Energy' illustrations are figurative spontaneous abstract art, they explore human energies such as love, life and dance. Each piece was titled with a corresponding mood, upon reflection of the series, the titles became a story and the story become a book, an art picture book.

Raphael Soyer and the Search for Modern Jewish Art
Artist Raphael Soyer (1899-1987), whose Russian Jewish family settled in Manhattan in 1912, was devoted to painting people in their everyday urban lives. He came to be known especially for his representations of city workers and the down-and-out, and for his portraits of himself and his friends. Although Soyer never identified himself as a "Jewish artist," Samantha Baskind, in the first full-length critical study of the artist, argues that his work was greatly influenced by his ethnicity and by the Jewish American immigrant experience. Baskind examines the painter's art and life in the rich context of religious, cultural, political, and social conditions in the twentieth-century United States. By promoting an understanding of Soyer as a Jewish American artist, she addresses larger questions about the definition and study of modern Jewish art. Whereas previous scholars have defined Jewish art simply as art produced by people who were born Jewish, Baskind stresses the importance of an artist's cultural identity when defining ethnic art. As Baskind explains how Soyer negotiated his Jewish identity in changing ways over his lifetime, she offers new strategies for identifying and interpreting Jewish art in general. Her analysis of Soyer's work places the artist in a necessary context and provides a valuable new approach to the study of modern Jewish art.

Liu Xiaodong
Quantifying the emotional burden of everyday life through the use of surveillance cameras and a robotic painting machineSince 2015, Chinese painter Liu Xiaodong (born 1963) has been developing a technologically radical project to create landscape paintings using robotic arms and surveillance cameras. Collectively entitled Weight of Insomnia, this series of paintings is an attempt to quantify the emotional burden carried by people moving through the seemingly ceaseless surroundings of the 24-hour city. Taking live feeds, streaming data and imagery from specific locations, Liu's painting machine processes these real-time images of the ever-changing flow of humanity into a complex network of abstract marks on canvas, resulting in a machine-manufactured painting. This book is the first to publish the full extent of this project through its iterations in China, Germany, the UK and Australia. The volume also includes an interview with the artist as well as Liu's diaries written during the project's gestation, installation shots and working documents.

Angel-like Blengins with butterfly wings, natural catastrophes, innocent girls, and murderous soldiers all appear in Darger's scenes, which are reproduced in this book in double-page and gatefold illustrations. In the volume's introductory essay, Klaus Biesenbach examines the radical originality of Darger's art, including his use of collage, incorporation of religious themes and iconography, and frequent juxtaposition of innocence with violence. An essay by Brooke Davis Anderson illuminates Darger's source materials and techniques, while another by Michael Bonesteel puts Darger's life in the context of his work. The book also includes Darger's autobiography, "A History of My Life," introduced by Carl Watson. The only book of its kind, Henry Darger offers an authoritative, balanced, and insightful look at an American master.
Pierre Et Gilles 40
On the fortieth anniversary of Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard's romantic union, this volume traces four decades of artistic collaboration between the photographer and painter known as Pierre et Gilles. This year-by-year retrospective of their vast oeuvre, accompanied by an incisive essay by art critic ?ric Troncy, showcases the genesis and development of their sublime, audacious, and explicitly confected fusion of photography and painting. Highly sophisticated and shamelessly sexy, their art--stylized, idealized painted photographs--synthesizes tropes drawn from celebrity and mainstream gay culture with timeless themes of religion, mythology, and beauty, and many works feature international stars including Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Dita Von Teese, Kylie Minogue, Karl Lagerfeld, Mick Jagger, and Iggy Pop. The book is available in a trade edition and in a limited art edition of 200 copies that features a signed and numbered limited edition print created especially for the book and presented in a deluxe clamshell case.
