Otomo Katsuhiro 20 Posters
To mark the 35th anniversary of the manga, AKIRA, PIE International is delighted to publish a new collection of classic Katsuhiro Otomo poster reprints. Throughout his long career, Katsuhiro Otomo has created many promotional posters for his film and manga works, as well as posters for events and advertising. Many great art pieces for such classic works as AKIRA, MEMORIES, SHORT PEACE, A FAREWELL TO WEAPONS and DOMU were released only in this form, and have since become hard to obtain collector's items. This collection contains high quality Japanese reprints of 20 sought-after classic posters that, until now, have been difficult for fans to get hold of. Handpicked by Otomo-Sensei himself, the collection contains eighteen 20" ? 14.2" (508mm ? 359mm) size color prints and two 40" ? 28.1" (1016mm?712mm) size color prints folded in four, in a specially designed envelope folder. Monet
This beautiful publication highlights a treasured painting in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts--Rounded Flower Bed (Corbeille de fleurs) by Claude Monet (1840-1926). The canvas was painted while Monet lived in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil from late 1871 to early 1878, during which time Monet banded with other painters to form the group now known as the Impressionists. Monet: Framing Life brings Rounded Flower Bed (Corbeille de fleurs) together with other canvases, by both Monet and fellow Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, to trace how this painting fits into the history of Impressionism more broadly. Beate Kuhn
With her unmistakable signature and exuberant imagination, Beate Kuhn (1927-2015) is one of the most significant German ceramicists of the post-war era. She turned to the liberal arts as early as the end of the 1950s. In linking sculptural reasoning with the possibilities of the material and inherent pottery techniques, the internationally renowned artist conquered the frontiers of ceramics and created virtuosic works that went on to form their own contribution to the history of modern sculpture. With around 190 works from all her periods of creativity, the Mannheim architect Klaus Freiberger was able to compile a collection unmatched anywhere else in the world. In honour of its foundation at the Neue Sammlung, the impressive oeuvre of Beate Kuhn is now being presented for the first time in this comprehensive publication. Samara Golden
Los Angeles-based artist Samara Golden (born 1973) creates immersive installations that explore what she calls the sixth dimension, where a multitude of pasts, presents and futures exist concurrently. For The Flat Side of the Knife, curated by Mia Locks and organized by MoMA PS1, Golden presented her largest installation to date, filling the double height of MoMA PS1's Duplex Gallery with staircases, beds, couches, lamps, musical instruments, video and sound. The Flat Side of the Knife combines physical spaces with illusory spaces that appear only in mirrors, akin to psychological and hallucinatory spaces in the mind. Her use of mirrors in conjunction with sculptural elements made from a silvery insulation board allows the illusion of space to expand in multiple directions. This catalogue includes documentation of this exhibition alongside the artist's major works to date.

Rita Letendre

Giorgio Morandi
One of the most beloved painters of the twentieth century, Giorgio Morandi created works that continue to exert their mysterious power on viewers worldwide. This publication focuses on the period from 1948 to 1964, during which Morandi developed and refined his investigations of serial, reductive, and permutational forms and compositions, a body of work that has had a profound influence on twentieth-century art and painting. Included here are five of the ten iconic "yellow cloth" paintings from 1952, a series featured prominently in the historic 1998 exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and numerous late paintings by the Italian master. Lygia Pape
A founding member of Brazil's Neo-Concrete movement, Lygia Pape (1927-2004) made art that favored the primacy of the viewer's sensorial experience. Pape's geometric abstractions explore rich territory through sculpture, drawing, engraving, filmmaking and installation. This publication brings together works spanning 1955 to 2001. The precise incised lines of Pape's Tecelares woodcut prints and drawings of the 1950s and '60s marry pure geometry with organic patterns. Gauguin
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was not cut out for finance. Nor did he last particularly long in the French Navy, or as a tarpaulin salesman in Copenhagen who did not speak Danish. He began painting in his spare time in 1873 and in 1876 took part in the Paris Salon. Three years later, he was exhibiting alongside Pissarro, Degas, and Monet. A querulous, hard-drinking individual, Gauguin often called himself a savage. His close but fraught friendship with the similarly temperamental Vincent van Gogh climaxed in a violent incident in 1888, when van Gogh purportedly confronted Gauguin with a razor blade, and later cut off his own ear. Shortly afterwards, following the completion of a midcareer masterpiece Vision After the Sermon (1888), Gauguin took himself to Tahiti, with the intention of escaping "everything that is artificial and conventional..." On Tahiti, Gauguin's unfettered joy in the island's nature, native people, and figurative images soared, spurring a prolific output of paintings and prints. In works such as Woman with a Flower (Vahine no te Tiare, 1891) and Sacred Spring: Sweet Dreams (Nave Nave Moe, 1894), he developed a distinct, Primitivist style that positively oozed with sunshine and color. In the tradition of exotic sensuality, his thick, buttery lashings of paint lingered in particular over the curves of Tahitian women. Gauguin died alone, on Tahiti's neighboring Marquesas Islands, with many of his personal papers and belongings dispersed in a local auction. It was not until a smart art dealer began curating and showing Gauguin's work in Paris that the artist's profound influence began making itself felt, especially to the new breed of French avant-garde artists, such as Picasso and Matisse.This book offers the essential introduction the artist's truly colorful life, from the Impressionist salons of 1870s Paris to his final days in the Pacific, productive and passionate to the end.

Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele was a meteor that flashed across the galaxy of Viennese art at the beginning of the last century. Although he lived only twenty-eight years--dying quite suddenly of influenza in 1918 just as World War I came to an end--he left a stunning pictorial oeuvre. Schiele's obsession with sexuality, his own and that of others, made him at once a voyeur and a participant in that sexual imperative which Freud was concurrently plumbing with such unsettling results. The disturbing revelations of Schiele's unmasking portraiture and of the new science of psychology disclosed a collective cultural anxiety during the last years of the crumbling Austrian empire. Schiele was disturbingly dualistic: his provocative explorations of erotica with their startlingly modern sensibilities do not prepare the viewer for the tenderness revealed in his lyrical landscapes and mostly unpeopled town scenes. These emit a haunting loneliness and are related to an obsession with pathos expressed in the artist's melancholy allegories and existential portraits.
Matisse Cut-outs
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a fighting spirit. Despite a cancer diagnosis in 1941, increasing frailty, and the confines of a wheelchair, the indomitable Frenchman never stopped in his quest to make art. With what he called une seconde vie, a second life, he embarked on a remarkable collage period, cutting and pasting pieces of colored paper into gouaches d矇coup矇es of birds, plants, flowers, and the female form. Emphasizing color and contrast, the cut-out technique generated both striking lines and vivid juxtapositions. In works such as Icarus (1943), The Blue Nude (1952), The Snail (1953), and The Sheaf (1953), clean forms and elemental structures power a compositional force that belies the work's decorative appeal, at once tightly organized and infectious with joie de vivre. As his work progressed, Matisse's excitement with his results fueled ever-larger pieces, advancing from small works to vast wall-sized murals. As his final years approached, Matisse reveled in the simplicity and brilliance of these pieces, avowing, "Only what I created after the illness constitutes my real self: free, liberated..." Gustav Klimt

Overheard and Interrupted
Compiling works and writings from the last 13 years, this comprehensive monograph on American artist, writer and theorist Brandon LaBelle (born 1969) captures the artist's expansive practice. Originally from Los Angeles and currently based in Berlin, LaBelle has been at the forefront of the sound arts since the mid-1990s, developing projects that adopt methods of intervention and spatial practice, that work with voice and modes of address, and that stage scenes of public gathering based on notions of interruption and radical sharing. LaBelle is a highly unique artist and writer, engaged in collaborative and public work, and the monograph documents his diverse activities in a range of international contexts. It includes a CD of a recent line performance by Labelle, essays on the artist by writer Fred Dewey, curator Edit Moln獺r, and cultural theorist Jeremy Woodruff, along with an interview with the artist by Elena Biserna.
Ed Ruscha
The is the first publication to focus on Ed Ruscha's (born 1937) Ribbon Word works, begun in 1966. It features reproductions of more than 50 masterpieces, along with three essays by the show's curator Dieter Buchhart, as well as contributions by Glenn O'Brien and Alexandra Schwartz, highlighting the works' wide array of subtle color and nuanced drawing technique, and showing how Ruscha's paper ribbons became three-dimensional, illusionistic objects. Ruscha developed this body of work from calligraphic lines and cursive handwriting in order to give his drawings the appearance of three-dimensional forms. His imaginary ribbon-word objects provoke multiple cultural meanings as they suggest sculptures modeled by light. Ruscha's breathtaking work, using an inimitable trompe l'oeil technique with the application of gunpowder, constitutes a major contribution to 20th-century art.

Yet the subtly coded, vibrantly colored pictures that De Clerck painted for Archduke Albert of Austria and his wife Isabella are political propaganda of the highest order.
