Gender, Orientalism and the Jewish NationWomen in the Work of Ephraim Moses Lilien at the German Fin de Si癡cle
Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874-1925) was one of the most important Jewish artists of modern times. As a successful illustrator, photographer, painter and printer, he became the first major Zionist artist. Surprisingly there has been little in-depth scholarly research and analysis of Lilien's work available in English, making this book an important contribution to historical and art-historical scholarship.Concentrating mainly on his illustrations for journals and books, Lynne Swarts acknowledges the importance of Lilien's groundbreaking male iconography in Zionist art, but is the first to examine the complex and nuanced depiction of women which comprised a major dimension of his work. Lilien's female images offer a compelling glimpse of an alternate, independent and often sexually liberated modern Jewish woman, a portrayal that often eluded the Zionist imagination. Using an interdisciplinary approach to integrate intellectual and cultural history with issues of gender, Jewish history and visual culture, Swarts also explores the important fin de si癡cletensions between European and Oriental expressions of Jewish femininity. Teachable Monuments
Monuments around the world have become the focus of intense and sustained discussions, activism, vandalism, and removal. Since the convulsive events of 2015 and 2017, during which white supremacists committed violence in the shadow of Confederate symbols, and the 2020 nationwide protests against racism and police brutality, protesters and politicians in the United States have removed Confederate monuments, as well as monuments to historical figures like Christopher Columbus and Dr. J. Marion Sims, questioning their legitimacy as present-day heroes that their place in the public sphere reinforces. The essays included in this anthology offer guidelines and case studies tailored for students and teachers to demonstrate how monuments can be used to deepen civic and historical engagement and social dialogue. Essays analyze specific controversies throughout North America with various outcomes as well as examples of monuments that convey outdated or unwelcome value systems without prompting debate.
Johannes Kip, The Gloucestershire Engravings
Three hundred years ago, in 1721, the 'Dutch engraver' Johannes Kip (or John Kip, his anglicised name) dropped down dead in St John's Street, Westminster, bringing to a sudden end his career in England of more than thirty years as a renowned printmaker. Gloucestershire owes him a special commemoration in 2021 as the draughtsman and also engraver of sixty-four prints commissioned in the early eighteenth century by Sir Robert Atkyns for The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire. The majority of the prints contain an architectural-style drawing of a gentleman's 'Seat', but each is a treasure trove of other features in the surrounding scene. The short commentary which accompanies a large-sized reproduction of each print in this book has pointers to the details and to the history of the house and the family. Kip's work as the engraver of houses drawn or painted by a fellow Dutchman, Leendert Knyff (generally known as Leonard Knyff), is well-known; his unique collection of Gloucestershire prints is not. This book, based on the collaborative work of people with an interest in one or more prints, and the accumulated information of the Gloucestershire Gardens and Landscape Trust, reveals the significance of Kip's work. There are examples here of old houses and relatively new houses, large houses and relatively modest ones, the houses of aristocrats but more often of Gloucestershire gentry, of elaborate gardens and extensive estates, of splendid views reaching to the shipping on the rivers bounding the county on the west, or more limited ones of local hills. Two engravings of Gloucester are presented first, and then the sequence of parishes starts with Wick Court, appropriately the least altered of all the houses portrayed. Johannes Kip: The Gloucestershire Engravings is a contribution to the history of the county, to knowledge of the gardens, which in many cases still reflect Kip's engravings, to the unique history of many of the houses which survive three hundred years later, and to the riches of the Gloucestershire countryside.

Auguste Rodin: Translated By Jessie Lemont And Hans Trausil. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
Sarah Sze: Night Into Day

POEMS FROM QUARANTINE is a poetry anthology about the processes of life. It is a collection of poems that were once a scrapbook of poetry brainstorms. The author saved them for when she wouldn't have any inspiration. When the pandemic hit, Kathleen found it hard to find new inspiration as she could no longer travel to new places and spaces. So, she took to old notes and pieces of memories of the past, to combine with the present, to create a new outlook on the future.In the beginning, the poems were merely scribbled thoughts and ideas in a notebook, then enhanced with images and key words, so that at a later date the feelings associated with the brainstorm would assist in turning them into an actual poem. These enhancements include all of the typical things you would find in a scrapbook, such as photos, magazine clippings, and fancy add-ons.By working in this way, the significance of the process is highlighted as most important as opposed to the end result. It is important to have an involvement with your imagination in the writing process, whereby you rely heavily on the creative elements coming together on their own. Since every single one of these poems started as a simple idea and none of them were completed from start to finish in one sitting, the meaning behind each one has grown to its highest potential to provide a truly engaging impact in the reader.The poems appear in the order in which they have been written. They are written in various forms, including free-form as well as poetic structures. From each of the pieces individually and as a whole, there is a satirical lens in which to view life. Each poem can be a person, and the anthology a community. In this way, we notice the operative system for what it is and how a process starts, finishes, and continues. And most importantly, how to survive the global pandemic of 2020 together, as it carries onward into 2021.The goal of this anthology is for people to have more pride in the steps they take to accomplish a task, so that in the end, the result comes out much better because we were invested in it. Ren矇e Green: Pacing
Legacies of modernism reappraised and reconstructed in an epic project by Ren矇e GreenAmerican artist Ren矇e Green (born 1959) spent two years engaged with the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, during which she presented a series of interlinked public programs and exhibitions, culminated with her major exhibition Within Living Memory (2018). Green's Carpenter project, Pacing, is a meditation spurred by inhabiting an architectural icon--Le Corbusier's Carpenter Center--while exploring the historical and institutional legacies of modernism's other forms, including cinema, visual art, poetry, music and literature. This handsome publication illuminates Green's unfolding process, with a sequence of exhibitions that took place from 2015 and culminating in Pacing: Facing in Toronto; Tracing in Como, Italy; Placing in Berlin; Spacing in Lisbon; and Begin Again, Begin Again in Los Angeles. The result is a meditation on creative processes across histories and media, partially inspired by two architectural icons: Rudolf M. Schindler and Le Corbusier. Despite grand ambitions, Le Corbusier was only able to realize two buildings in the Americas, the Carpenter Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Casa Curuchet, in La Plata, Argentina.
