Peace in the West

Willam,Peace  著
Gibbs Smith 出版
2025/07/13 出版

From authentic, traditional log cabins and expansive ranches to modern slopeside homes, William Peace is known for his rustic luxury style that celebrates life in the American West. "Stunning photography and thoughtful commentary highlight this tribute to interior designer William Peace, whose 'rustic luxury' style reflects the history and landscapes of the West."--Foreword Reviews The interior design career of William Peace has spanned more than thirty years. His work has crossed stylistic periods, places, and mediums. He is equally at ease designing a multigenerational ranch on thousands of acres; a small, environmentally sensitive cabin deep in the woods; or a modern steel, stone, and glass house overlooking a lake. Peace has created projects so authentic to the American western vernacular as to be indiscernible in place or time. However, he has concurrently created stunning modern projects that offer extraordinary fluidity between the indoors and outdoors due to the melding of indigenous materials to feature the celebrated views. Irrespective of period or aesthetic, he takes his direction from the location, the landscape, and the light. From traditional to modern, rustic to refined, mountains to lakes, and peaks to valleys, Peace's work has been specific to each client and place (in this book, southwestern Montana, northern Idaho, and the Texas Hill country), with a singular and specific design for each homeowner. Peace understands that light and landscape dictate how one lives in the West, and they are critical considerations in designing a home. The cycle of the day in the American West is always dictated by the natural world.

Brunelleschi and the Moment of the Renaissance

Reaktion B 出版
2025/07/12 出版

A critical biography of the quietly inventive Renaissance architect. Filippo Brunelleschi is at once the most famous and most misunderstood architect of the Renaissance. The founding architect of the movement that led the way to modernity, his originality was not expressed in words or theory but in the materials he used, the scenography of space he engineered, the ingenuity of his designs, the exquisite workmanship of his detailing, and the strikingly creative reworking of classical elements that make up his buildings. In this book, Marvin Trachtenberg offers a new view of Brunelleschi's brilliant career as well as his life, guiding the reader through his most iconic works in Florence. In the process, this book sheds light on the competitive culture of Renaissance Italy. This is an original, lively account of a key Renaissance figure.

The Design of Childhood

2025/07/06 出版

**From the Winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism ** Now Updated with New Material**"[Lange] might be the most influential design critic writing now." -The Los Angeles Review of Books From building blocks to city blocks, an eye-opening exploration of the ways children's playthings and surroundings affect their development-now featuring the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning essays. Parents obsess over their children's playdates, kindergarten curriculum, and every bump and bruise, but their toys, classrooms, and playgrounds are just as important. These objects and spaces encode decades-even centuries-of ideas about good child-rearing versus bad. What is the Good Toy? Is it wooden, plastic, or even digital? What do youngsters lose when seesaws are deemed too dangerous and slides are designed primarily for safety? How can our built environment help children cultivate self-reliance? In these debates, parents, educators, and kids themselves are often caught in the middle. Now, Pulitzer Prize-winning design critic Alexandra Lange reveals the surprising histories behind the human-made elements of our children's pint-size landscape. Her fascinating investigation shows how the seemingly innocuous universe of stuff affects kids' behavior, values, and health. Along the way, she reveals how years of decisions by toymakers, architects, and urban planners have helped-and hindered-American kids' journeys toward independence. Seen through Lange's eyes, everything from the sandbox to the street becomes vibrant with meaning. The Design of Childhood will change the way you view your children's world-and your own.

Performative Architecture

2025/07/05 出版

An analysis of the concept of "performance" in Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architects' architecture. The term "performance," as used in 1955 by the British philosopher of language John L. Austin, refers to processual, "performative" aspects that take center stage instead of rigid states and fixed norms. It has found its way into the diverse areas of science and technology and, recently, also in architecture. Performance has long been a recurring topic in the design and research work of Zurich-based architecture firm Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architects (EMI). This is particularly visible in the award-winning design for a tourist infrastructure on the eastern ridge of the Jungfrau in the Swiss Alps (2012), in the temporary installation Anthropomorphic Form for the Swiss Art Awards (2019), and in the residential building on Stampfenbachstrasse in Zurich (2022). Their own work is a catalyst for EMI's deeper engagement with performance, which is explored in Performative Architecture. Texts by the firm's founding partner Elli Mosayebi and by Joseph Schwartz, Laurent Stalder, and Nina Zschocke, all of whom also teach at ETH Z羹rich's Department of Architecture, as well as artistic and documentary photographs, plans, and drawings, illuminate the phenomenon from the different perspectives of architectural practice, theory of architecture, and structural engineering.

Classical Taste in the Architectural World of Thomas Jefferson

2025/07/04 出版

Reaching beyond politics and law, this book focuses on Thomas Jefferson as an aesthetic classicist. Jefferson embraced the influence of antiquity through his adoption of classical architecture in his Virginia residences, in order to establish Rome as an ancestor to America. In a time of significant political and cultural change, he aligned himself with a Greco-Romano legacy that represented knowledge, power and art. Alley Marie Jordan studies the architectural and landscape spaces of Jefferson's classical taste, which include the villas of Monticello and Poplar Forest, as well as the University of Virginia. An examination of these places exposes his deeply entrenched views of the importance of classics in Virginia, and reveals them as expressions of admiration of classical antiquity. Seeking to uncover an underexplored side of his character, Jordan deconstructs his identity through a classical lens and illustrates his influence on American culture, as well as his desire to reform it via the classics. By dislodging Jefferson from American politics, this study redefines his worldview and motivations for inventing an American virtue based on Horace's utile dulci. Although his participation in acquiring classical taste was not unique for his time, he did accomplish a unique aim with classicism: the blending of the American landscape with classical culture to create a 'new' American virtue.
