Organizing Residential Utilities
Utility systems are everywhere in the home. What were once major innovations - central heating, hot and cold running water, and electric lights - have become so commonplace as to be taken for granted. In fact, the network of utilities (pipes, wires, and ducts) in the home is now relatively simple compared to those in some of the other environments that people occupy - airplanes, ships, cars, etc. Although the systems in the home are comparatively uncomplicated, their installation involves inefficient, labor-intensive processes that would not be tolerated in other products and industries, such as those mentioned above. Utilities are run almost haphazardly through the walls of stick-built homes, sometimes compromising structure and insulating integrity, and always making repair and modification difficult. In the future, utilities will inevitably become more complicated as homes become centers of work, learning, communication, entertainment, preventative health care, and distributed energy production. The new utility systems that emerge to meet these functions will likely include advanced control systems, LED or fiber-optic lighting, wireless and wired data networks, additional fire safety plumbing, building-integrated photovoltaics, and ubiquitous low-cost sensors for security, health, comfort, etc. Existing utility systems can also be expected to expand. Conventional entangled processes will increase the complexity and cost of construction, and could inhibit the introduction of new utility systems. The third volume of a series on the renovation of the Swiss public hospital KSSG-OKS. Since 2011, the Swiss city of St. Gallen's public hospital KSSG-OKS has been undergoing a comprehensive rebuilding and extension program. Developed by Zurich-based firm Fawad Kazi Architekt in collaboration with the KSSG-OKS planning consortium, the vast undertaking will completely transform the site into a large, coherent building complex by 2029. This third volume of the eventually five-part monograph on this major and hugely demanding urban development project is dedicated to Haus 07A, the largest of the new buildings, which gives the entire complex a new urban face. A high-rise that mainly hosts the hospital's wards is founded on a three-story elongated base with a spacious public roof terrace and includes the main entrance to the entire hospital complex.

NREL/Habitat for Humanity Zero Energy Home
The design of this 1,280-square-foot, three-bedroom Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver zero energy home carefully combines envelope efficiency, efficient equipment, appliances and lighting, and passive and active solar features to reach the zero energy goal. The home was designed with an early version (July 22, 2004) of the BEOpt building optimization software; DOE2 and TRNSYS were used to perform additional analysis. This engineering approach was tempered by regular discussions with Habitat construction staff and volunteers. These discussions weighed the applicability of the optimized solutions to the special needs and economics of a Habitat house--moving the design toward simple, easily maintained mechanical systems and volunteer-friendly construction techniques. NREL/Habitat for Humanity Zero Energy Home
The design of this 1,280-square-foot, three-bedroom Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver zero energy home carefully combines envelope efficiency, efficient equipment, appliances and lighting, and passive and active solar features to reach the zero energy goal. The home was designed with an early version (July 22, 2004) of the BEOpt building optimization software; DOE2 and TRNSYS were used to perform additional analysis. This engineering approach was tempered by regular discussions with Habitat construction staff and volunteers. These discussions weighed the applicability of the optimized solutions to the special needs and economics of a Habitat house--moving the design toward simple, easily maintained mechanical systems and volunteer-friendly construction techniques. Rupture, iconoclasm, and tabula rasa are concepts commonly used to describe the approach to cultural heritage associated with the avant-garde and revolutionary politics during the early twentieth century. Highlighting artists and radical intellectuals who worked to protect public monuments in 1910-1950s Spain, The Monument of Tomorrow challenges the persistent narrative, imposed by Francoism, of an iconoclastic Second Republic in Spain.Author Miguel Caballero draws on a wide range of sources to examine how artists, architects, writers, and activists transformed monument and heritage conservation into a progressive, experimental cause in their fight against fascism. During the Spanish War, with its devastating air raids, these individuals were motivated by the "defense of culture" to become determined conservationists. Caballero's research incorporates surviving monuments, architectural plans, propaganda posters, and literary works, including novels, plays, and poetry. The war became a laboratory for experiments in conserving and redefining monuments and national heritage. Modernist-style protective structures, for example, were built atop Madrid's historic monuments, including statues of Cybele, Neptune, and Phillip III in Plaza Mayor. Such innovations later influenced strategies for safeguarding monuments during the Second World War. This history, Caballero argues, makes the Spanish War pivotal to development of the concept of World Heritage. Tree-Building Relationships
Dr Gary Winn, architect and arboriculturist has a professional career straddling built and natural environments. His research utilised a systems thinking approach to architecture that included building and environmental systems, enabling understanding of both environments as one interacting system. He refers to tree-building relationships as arbitecture(R) and considers himself as a practising Arbitect(R). Despite an exiguous amount of published literature investigating the effects of arboricultural knowledge on UK architects' design practice, factors influencing the practice of incorporating trees within their designs have not previously been fully considered. The research presents a contribution toward this issue, through an interpretative, qualitative study, comprising design workshops that investigated the incorporation of arboricultural topics and the resulting features of success. The research found that, acquired arboricultural knowledge and a holistic approach to design solutions have multiple benefits, including deeper engagement with site contexts. Additionally, application of acquired arboricultural hard skills revealed changing attitudes toward tree-building relationships, with conflict emerging as a contributing mechanism. Stakeholders confirmed positive responses to receiving arboricultural knowledge, contextualising trees and practice within a variety of situations, including well-being, sustainability and design opportunities.
