The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) evaluated ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1-2009, 'The Standard for High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings'. The design of this 1,280-square-foot, three-bedroom Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver zero energy home carefully combines envelope efficiency, efficient equipment, appliances and lighting, and passive and active solar features to reach the zero energy goal. The home was designed with an early version (July 22, 2004) of the BEOpt building optimization software; DOE2 and TRNSYS were used to perform additional analysis. This engineering approach was tempered by regular discussions with Habitat construction staff and volunteers. These discussions weighed the applicability of the optimized solutions to the special needs and economics of a Habitat house--moving the design toward simple, easily maintained mechanical systems and volunteer-friendly construction techniques. Tree-Building Relationships
Dr Gary Winn, architect and arboriculturist has a professional career straddling built and natural environments. His research utilised a systems thinking approach to architecture that included building and environmental systems, enabling understanding of both environments as one interacting system. He refers to tree-building relationships as arbitecture(R) and considers himself as a practising Arbitect(R). Despite an exiguous amount of published literature investigating the effects of arboricultural knowledge on UK architects' design practice, factors influencing the practice of incorporating trees within their designs have not previously been fully considered. The research presents a contribution toward this issue, through an interpretative, qualitative study, comprising design workshops that investigated the incorporation of arboricultural topics and the resulting features of success. The research found that, acquired arboricultural knowledge and a holistic approach to design solutions have multiple benefits, including deeper engagement with site contexts. Additionally, application of acquired arboricultural hard skills revealed changing attitudes toward tree-building relationships, with conflict emerging as a contributing mechanism. Stakeholders confirmed positive responses to receiving arboricultural knowledge, contextualising trees and practice within a variety of situations, including well-being, sustainability and design opportunities. A Vision of Paradise
For more than half a century, the Mill Reef Club in Antiqua, West Indies, has been the premier private resort in the Caribbean. It began in 1946 when Robertson "Happy" Ward, a Connecticut architect, led a hearty band of adventures in search of a vacation haven free of the cras commercialization that spoiled many enterprises. On the eastern shore of the island they saw their vision of paradise: 1,300 acres of scrub brush and abandoned sugar fields overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Without the aid of many modern conveniences such as electricity or running water, the first members of the Mill Reef Club transformed the property into a community of private homes with a hotel, clubhouse, tennis courts, and expansive golf course. A Vision of Paradise: Robertson Ward and the Mill Reef Club presents an illustrated history of their dedication to realizing their dream. It is a tale of unique experiences: the establishment of Pan Am's weekly "Mill Reef Special" flight from New York, and learning to contend with the mishaps and misadventures of this rough land--hardships that would be unheard of in their other lives. It is also a story of people, many of whom built America's great corporations, creating a diverse community devoted to forging "the good life" in a place where it always required a lot of work. But come what may, they loved it all. As poet laurete Archibald MacLeish wrote at age eighty-five when frail health finally forced him to withdraw: "You don't resign from the Mill Reef Club more than once in a lifetime and not then if you can help it."
