The Spence House
This book documents the landmark Spence House in detailed chapters that describe its design, construction, living in the house and the Spences' architectural precast concrete plant that produced the house. The house design is of the International Style influenced by Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye. Completed in 1982, the house is located in the small Northwest Georgia city of Dalton.The house is total precast construction, using load-bearing architectural precast concrete for the finished surfaces and hollowcore slabs for floors/roof deck, with cast-in-place base and foundation bearing on reinforced concrete piles.The book contains numerous sketches, design drawings and photographs during the design and construction phase. Interdisciplinary Design Research
The anthology is devoted to expanding and deepening the methodology of project thinking to introduce theoretical and methodological foundations in design practice and design education. Professional terminology is an urgent problem today, since in addition to higher education, there are many short-term courses, websites of design studios, and blogs, where information is often presented incorrectly or subjectively. Lost Edinburgh
From mean beginnings - 'wretched accommodation, no comfortable houses, no soft beds', visiting French knights complained in 1341 - the city of Edinburgh went on to become one of the architectural wonders of the world. Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI
An investigative record of the architectural movement emblematic of the Soviet OrientGiven its geographical location, developed resources and multicultural history, Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, continues to be one of the most important centers of Central Asia. Since the Soviet era, numerous efforts have been made to conserve and restore architectural monuments that speak to the rich ancient and medieval history of the region. By contrast, the modernist architecture of the 1960s-80s, which articulated the idea of a modern, forward-looking society, was never perceived as heritage. With the arrival of the market economy and after the independence of Uzbekistan in 1991, the architecture of the previous three decades, which focused on social issues and economy of means, lost relevance. Today, this modernist layer of Tashkent is gaining recognition as a unique artistic, cultural and social phenomenon that is best equipped to reveal the specific character of the modernization of Soviet Central Asia. More than just another "peripheral case" of multiple modernities or a point on the global map of 20th-century architectural modernism, this architecture is relevant to the global cultural scene, reflecting the radical aspects of the Soviet social and cultural experiment.This publication combines the materials of the Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI project, for which an international team of architects, historians and restoration experts joined forces on recording and restoring the city's modernist legacy. The Woolwich Rotunda
This book tells the story of a remarkable building, the Rotunda, and its unique landscape. The Rotunda has had two separate but equally significant lives - the first as a tented ballroom in Westminster and the second as an artillery museum in Woolwich. The structure was commissioned in 1814 by the Prince Regent, the future King George IV, and designed by renowned architect John Nash. Having hosted a major party celebrating the Allied victory in the Napoleonic Wars and honouring the Duke of Wellington, the Rotunda was dismantled and transferred in 1818 to the military garrison at Woolwich. There it was rebuilt as a permanent structure and opened as an artillery museum in 1820 - one of the earliest of its kind in the world. On its new site, the Rotunda formed an integral part of the Royal Military Repository, founded in Woolwich in 1778 as an educational facility for the Royal Regiment of Artillery and based at the Repository Grounds from the early 1800s. As well as outlining the site's history, this book highlights its innovation and popularity and places the Rotunda and Repository Grounds in their historical context. The Rotunda only closed as a museum at the turn of the 20th century, after 180 years, and is now a high-profile building at risk.
