Eyes On Africa
Traveling around the Eastern countries of Africa has been a remarkable and enticing experience, but not much is as impressive as the facial expressions of the beautiful people emanating joy, peace, concern and simplicity. This book photographically attempts to capture a glimpse of those emotions. Having been born, reared, educated and practicing medicine for several years in Ohio, I found myself in San Francisco. Always fascinated by photography, my interests took me to capturing patterns and facial expressions. Basically self-taught, with some coursework at NY Institute of Photography, I've had the chance to shoot all over the country, Europe, Asia, Pacific Islands, all fantastic but the people, the sounds, the smells and the smiles I have encountered in Eastern Africa keep calling me back. It is my hope that my photographs can be enjoyed and express some element of my multi-sensorial encounters in this continent of age-old wisdom, beauty, healing and spiritual fortitude.

"I've lived in LA my whole adult life. About 10 years ago, I moved to Malibu for what I thought would be a few months. I never left. Why? Just a few dozen miles from Los Angeles, Malibu often feels like a totally different world. This is where you can share your breakfast with dolphins and seals, or watch surfers ride the perfect wave. But it is more than that. Malibu evokes a feeling of a simpler, happier, freer time. Go anywhere in the world and mention Malibu, and people associate it with images of that time: blonde women frolicking on the beach - young, pretty, happy, without a care in the world; old red Mustang convertibles; puppy dogs chasing footballs; Beach Boys music; movie stars; surfing and fun, fun, fun. Nonhuman Photography
A new philosophy of photography that goes beyond humanist concepts to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent, as both subject and agent. Today, in the age of CCTV, drones, medical body scans, and satellite images, photography is increasingly decoupled from human agency and human vision. In Nonhuman Photography, Joanna Zylinska offers a new philosophy of photography, going beyond the human-centric view to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent. Zylinska argues further that even those images produced by humans, whether artists or amateurs, entail a nonhuman, mechanical element--that is, they involve the execution of technical and cultural algorithms that shape our image-making devices as well as our viewing practices. At the same time, she notes, photography is increasingly mobilized to document the precariousness of the human habitat and tasked with helping us imagine a better tomorrow. With its conjoined human-nonhuman agency and vision, Zylinska claims, photography functions as both a form of control and a life-shaping force. Zylinska explores the potential of photography for developing new modes of seeing and imagining, and presents images from her own photographic project, Active Perceptual Systems. She also examines the challenges posed by digitization to established notions of art, culture, and the media. In connecting biological extinction and technical obsolescence, and discussing the parallels between photography and fossilization, she proposes to understand photography as a light-induced process of fossilization across media and across time scales.
Julia Margaret Cameron
A bold new study of Julia Margaret Cameron's Victorian photographs, charting the legacy of colonialism following the 1857 Indian Uprising. Julia Margaret Cameron, the celebrated Victorian photographer, was a child of the colonies. Born in 1815 in Calcutta, she was the daughter of a governing official of the East India Company. After relocating to London in 1848, Cameron was embraced by other British expatriates and a celebrated cultural network. This circle included literary personalities like Thackeray and Tennyson, painters and critics associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and political figures like Thomas Babington Macaulay and Lord Lansdowne. In 1857, Indians rebelled against British rule, and in London, Cameron became absorbed by news of the Uprising. In the aftermath of the revolt, national and imperial politics transfixed England, some seven years before Cameron took up photography. The impact of those forces, and the inspiration of the literary, artistic, and political works produced by her circle, influenced her earliest imagery. Through close readings of these photographs, which she assembled in photographic albums, this book exposes how Cameron embedded in her work a visual rhetoric of imperial power. Australian Women's Historical Photography
Australian Women's Historical Photography: Other Times, Other Views examines the photographs produced by six talented women photographers against the historical backdrop of settler violence towards Indigenous Australians, the First Women's Movement, the Great War of 1914-1918, Australia's imperial occupation of New Guinea, the final years of Chinese Nationalist Party rule in China and debates about photography's status as an art form. Women's works from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been down-played or even ignored in existing accounts of Australia's cultural history, and this study is aimed at rectifying this situation. At the same time, the book demonstrates why amateur works are just as important as commercial works to our understanding of the past. ● Methodologically, the book draws on scholarship from history, art history, anthropology, sociology, gender studies and cultural studies to create an interdisciplinary critical framework that will be of interest to a broad range of academic and archival researchers. It is also a framework that is critically sensible of its own groundings in the postcolonial and feminist present thereby reflecting what is meaningful at any given historical moment. ● Finally, this book responds to the pronounced lack of visibility of Australian realist, documentary and commercial women's works. The few histories of Australian women's photography that exist pay more attention to modernist and contemporary works, and when they do mention earlier women photographer's works, they seldom go into much detail. They also ignore the works of the earliest Indigenous women photographers, women who traveled and made photographs abroad. By presenting a carefully contextualized and detailed study of works by six Australian women photographers who worked in the late colonial era and whose works in all sorts of small and surprising ways chronicled the impacts of some of the periods more disturbing as well as enlightened events, we will not only add to knowledge of Australian women's photography, we will also broaden and enrich the frames of women's photography and Australian history more generally.

Bridges
Bridges is a long poem that wends its way through the structures that cross the R穩o de La Plata / River between Buenos Aires and its suburbs, creating a spatio-temporal reality in which biographical situations are interwoven with political events. The concrete presence of the bridges, with names such as Pueyrred籀n, La Noria, Avellaneda, among others, marks the limits of the capital city and the beginning of the periphery surrounding it, characterized by a vastly different landscape. In Genovese's historical memory, many scenes from her childhood and adolescence merge with the revolts and uprising of the Peronist working class and the repressive military dictatorship.---Buenos Aires is sometimes said, with a shrug or a wistful sigh, to "turn its back" on its river: as if the city goes about its business without a palpable sense of communion with the water that defines it. Alicia Genovese's long poem Puentes, tenderly translated by Daniel Coudriet as Bridges, does the very opposite. The Group for Mutual Improvement
The black and white photographs in The Group For Mutual Improvement were taken in a vacant lot behind photographer Jordan Baumgarten's home in Philadelphia.Over a period of 10 years, Baumgarten and his neighbours spent much of their time together in this lot. His book is a document of these gatherings. The title is drawn from the Junto, also known as the Leather Apron Club-- a diverse group of individuals Benjamin Franklin brought together in colonial era Philadelphia for the purpose of mutual improvement. They would gather in a tavern to debate questions of morals, politics, current events, philosophy, and local businesses. Baumgarten's group was much less formal but the discussions no less vital.

Harry Benson. the Beatles
In early 1964, photographer Harry Benson received a call from the photo editor of London's Daily Express, who asked him to cover the Beatles' trip to Paris. It was the beginning of a career-defining relationship, which would both make Benson's name and produce some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the Beatles. In Paris, Benson captured the Fab Four in the midst of a pillow fight at the George V Hotel, a spontaneous moment which came to epitomize the spirit of the band--Benson himself has called it the best shot of his career. Later that year, he followed the group on the road for their debut U.S. tour, documenting their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, their surprising encounter with Cassius Clay, and the hysteria of New York Beatlemania. Benson also photographed George Harrison's honeymoon in Barbados, documented the Beatles on the set of their debut movie A Hard Day's Night, and was present on the now infamous 1966 tour when John Lennon said that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus." Parks' chronicle of small-town Maine anticipates his profound images of civil rights and inequalityIn January 1944, Gordon Parks (1912-2006) photographed Herklas Brown--the owner of a general store and Esso gas station in Somerville, Maine. Parks traveled to the state under the auspices of the Standard Oil Company New Jersey (SONJ) to record their contributions to the war effort and document the home front in this crucial period. His photographs chronicled oil and gas facilities and workers, small-town Esso gas station owners, as well as people whose lives depended on fuel and other SONJ products.Consistent with his work before and after, Parks prioritized getting to know his subjects as people, photographing Brown not only at his Esso station but also at home with his family. Despite the challenges he faced as a Black man traveling alone, Parks created a compelling documentary record of rural America. The images from this period offer crucial insight into the historic moment, as well as Parks' early photographic practice directly before he began his tenure at Life magazine. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Herklas Brown and Maine, 1944 features more than 90 previously unpublished photographs.

Larry Sultan & Mike Mandel: Evidence
The canonical 1977 American photobook returns to print in a new, definitive edition that most closely resembles the originalIn 1977, American photographers Larry Sultan (1946-2009) and Mike Mandel (born 1950) published a book of photographs titled Evidence. The book was the culmination of a two-year search through the archives of 77 government agencies, educational institutions and corporations, including General Atomic Company, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the San Jose Police Department and the United States Department of the Interior. The original pictures were made as objective records of activities unfamiliar to the lay public: the scenes of crimes, aeronautical engineering tests, industrial experiments and other subjects. Sifting through some two million images, Mandel and Sultan assembled a careful sequence of 59 pictures. The book was thoughtfully designed to depict the photographs in terms of their "documentary" origins, unaccompanied by identifying captions. Faced with a world of mysterious events and unfathomable activities, the reader is confronted with only the sequential narrative imagery of the book and thus must actively participate in creating its meaning.Following a revised edition of the book in 2003 and a 2017 reprint--both of which sold out quickly and have become highly collectible--Evidence is back in print nearly 50 years after its initial publication. This new, definitive edition features revelatory new scans--many made from the original negatives--which greatly enhance the eerie objectivity conveyed by the book's title. In many cases, the original negatives revealed that crops had been made to the image by the agencies; the complete images are restored here. The jacketless, library-style binding of the original 1977 edition is also restored, further underscoring its impersonal documentlike character and its canonical status.

Mountain Rescue Vehicles
Mountain search and rescue is one of the most demanding rescue activities of them all. It take place under very severe and often dramatic conditions like high altitude, snow and ice, crevasses, glaciers and avalances. It is the stuff of real heroic acts and romance. The occassional demand for assistance, but on a larrge scale, is then often carried out by volunteers, mainly locals due to the demand for local area and climate knowledge. This book is mainly focusssed on the Alps, but also visits outher European mountaineous areas. The special conditions has led to the development of specialized equipment and the most visible is the widespread use of helicopters which have a high degree af maneouverability in inacessible terrain and ability to carry a payload. The helicopter services work together with traditionsl ground based teams and sometimes move these teams to the search area. Helicopters swiftly move injured persons to a medicsl facility. Professional mountain rescue services are quite common near tourist resorts like ski resorts where there is a regular demand.
