Nick Brandt: Sink / Rise, the Day May Break
Haunting meditations on the devastation wrought by rising sea levels in the South PacificThrough his widely acclaimed work, English photographer Nick Brandt (1964) addresses pressing environmental issues, consistently highlighting mankind's impact upon the natural world. His work is truly a fusion of artistry and activism, and he is best known for capturing the majestic landscapes of Africa as well as intimate portraits of its wildlife. Sink / Rise is the third chapter of The Day May Break, an ongoing global series portraying ecological degradation and destruction. This chapter adopts a slightly different approach than its predecessors: taking humans, rather than animals or landscapes, as his subjects. Sink / Rise focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans from climate change. The people in these photos, photographed underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands, are local representatives of the many people whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises. In Brandt's images, the Islanders sit down at tables, stand on chairs and embrace--all the while, their pinched expressions reveal the desperation of their asphyxiating condition.
Jeff Wall
Cinematic scenes with painterly compositions that place contemporary photography within the broader canon of art historySince the late 1970s, Canadian photographer Jeff Wall has made significant contributions to establishing photography as an autonomous medium. He is considered the founder of "staged" photography and generates mostly large-format photographs--often inspired by literature, film and art history--composed in a multilayered and subtle way from a multitude of individual shots. Wall makes a distinction between his documentary still life photos and his "cinematographic" pictures, the latter of which take months or even years to complete. His contemporary genre scenes invoke famous works by Hokusai, Manet, Kafka, Ellison and others.Among the more than 50 works collected in the catalog of the large-scale solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler are Wall's iconic large-format slides in light boxes, black-and-white photographs and color photographic prints. His most recent images, representing the entire spectrum of his oeuvre, enter into a dialogue with works from the time of Wall's beginnings as an artist and reveal a wide range of references in terms of content and form. These new works will be on display and published in book form for the first time.Jeff Wall (born 1946) received degrees in art history from the University of British Columbia and the Courtauld Institute of Art. After teaching for a few years he turned to photography in earnest in 1977; he continues to experiment with both digital and analog techniques. Luxembourg - A Piece of Cake
This little book is for all travelers and cake lovers. It was not planned - it just happened through our first year in Luxembourg, filled with so much other joy and ecitement - all the enticing cake shop windows a little sampling - and because the cakes were so delicious and eye catching we started to take some pictures. We tasted all the cakes at our own expense, and quite a lot were downed with no documentation at all slightly to our regret when finally putting the story together. In Camera Geologica Siobhan Angus tells the history of photography through the minerals upon which the medium depends. Challenging the emphasis on immateriality in discourses on photography, Angus focuses on the inextricable links between image-making and resource extraction, revealing how the mining of bitumen, silver, platinum, iron, uranium, and rare earth elements is a precondition of photography. Manhatta
Keith Goldstein's photography series "Manhatta" is bold, beautiful and filled with the wonder of a boy mesmerized by the soaring architecture and light that makes Manhattan so unique. Goldstein was heavily influenced by the 1921 film "Manhatta" by Paula Strand and Charles Sheeler. It is considered the first avant garde film. Goldstein says "something just clicked when I saw the film "Manhatta" again and I started to think about my building images."Goldstein shoots images of buildings from up as high as he can, so his buildings are part of the sky. There are so many details and hidden delights that we cannot see from the street and Keith unveils those dramatically. The light is always different as it plays on older architectural wonders or is reflected in the glass of the contemporary high rise he has chosen. There is much more light to play with at these higher vantage points and he makes the most of that shooting late in the day of autumn, in the duller winter gray light or the in the full on summer sun. Goldstein says, "I think we all get excited seeing a place we are familiar with from a different perspective, in this case up high, certainly changes the experience and the perspective. Looking from a world above, the quality of light, shadow, and how the seasons change the atmosphere becomes so important to what you are a witness to."Keith Goldstein was born in Brooklyn and has been living in New York City since the 1970s. He is fascinated with the street life and the surrounding tableau of Manhattan's buildings. His images are heroic in nature and quietly revel in the magnificent details hidden above.
Silent Movie
The first amateur motion picture camera was massively produced in 1923, shortly after the introduction of 9,5 mm film by the Path矇 Fr癡res in France 101 years ago, in December 1922, and of 16 mm film by the Eastman Kodak Company in America a month later. The present collection depicts 101 movie cameras manufactured between the 1920s and the 1980s, most using 8 mm perforated celluloid film. A full-page 'portrait' of each model is accompanied by an expos矇 of its main technical specifications on the facing page. The guided tour leafs through a range of makes and companies from an era when novelty, aesthetics, industrial design, and competition for the commercial home market propelled the creation of sculptures out of metal and glass for the wide use by individuals and families who aspired to preserve their visual impressions in motion. German U-Bahn
In our family we have an ardent railfan or rail enthusiast. This has led to the present book. Rail enthusiasts are nothing new. An early trainspotter was 14-year-old Fanny Gordon, who in 1861 recorded the names of locomotives passing Westbourne Park station on the Great Western Railway. One of the many activities of rail enthusiasts is to photograph them and part of the fun is to share the photos. Another joy is to sit and read or page through a book or a magazine with pictures and information about trains. This little book was put together at the request of the family railfan in order precisely to sit and look at pictures of German U-Bahn trains. We share the opportunity and hope the reader will enjoy our selection of photos.
The American Cowboy
A faint cry over howling winds wakes me at 2:00 a.m. Boots, coat, and hat on, I grab my lantern and head out in a blizzard to the barn to mount my horse and search for the source of the cry: a newborn calf under a fresh blanket of snow.The cowboy's way of life embraces hard work, trust, and respect in the service of a greater purpose: community service, stewardship, and faith. It's called riding for the brand. The pay is modest; the toll on the body hard and the reward great. Hours on a horse, tending fences under wide-open sky as a hawk circles overhead, calves born under starry nights that finish with conversation around a campfire, the ole cook singing while making grub-- this is my "office." I have been asked many times why we cowboys ride for our money and rope for short pay. I can't imagine any other way.My photos are a testament to the cowboy life, defined by hard work in God's glorious country. Gold- and blue-hour light convey that glory and the long hours. This is who we are. Our handshake is a promise, our word is all you need, and living for the greater good is our way of life.
Marlette Water Systems
About the Marlette Water Systems. Water was stored in wooden tanks and sent through pipes into the towns. Virginia City had become America's greatest producer of high grade silver and gold ore. On May 12, 1862 the water companies combined to form the Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company. In the early 1870's the Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company realized they needed more water to supply the cities domestic and mining needs as a drought was starting to threaten the cities. "I started out taking pictures of this pristine area just for myself, but it morphed into something bigger and I became interested in the history of the water system. Then I decided to incorporate this history into a picture book that I was putting together for myself. I have traveled all the roads involved in the water system, from Marlette to Virginia City, Nevada and it has been quite a trip. I am excited to share this experience with other people as the Marlette area provides beauty and tranquility." From the author Julie Michler
Contemporary Photography as Collaboration
This book explores a spectrum of contemporary photographic practices across the fields of image-making, curating, archiving, teaching, community development and activism that have envisioned photography as ontologically and ethically collaborative. By looking specifically into the contexts where collaborative projects are produced and shown, and into the dialogical relation to the people they engage with -in hospitals, in prisons, in working-class neighbourhoods, with indigenous people, refugees, women, persons experiencing homelessness, young people- the contributions from practitioners, scholars, and curators show participatory practices to create the conditions for building new subjectivities, or making visible a multiplicity of identities, thus opening up a new politics of visibility. Therefore, this book specifically addresses the political, counter-cultural dimension of collaborative projects, but also their subversiveness in relation to dominant practices within the field ofphotography: this includes a reinvention of the position of the photographer -in turns facilitator or project leader- of curating and exhibition models, of archiving methodologies, of photographic education and of market practices.​

Lewis Carroll's Photographs of Children and Young Adults
Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), one of the most accomplished and well known photographers of the 19th century, took approximately 3000 photographs in his life time of which approximately 1580 prints and 71 glass negatives exist. Over 200 of these photographs are included in this book, including 8 which have never before been published. Blackburn
The approximately 240 photographs within this monograph were made between 1979 and 1989 in the Lancashire town of Blackburn. They capture the essence of the town during this turbulent period, showing Blackburn's industrial heritage, its diverse population and its resilience in the face of change. The photographs also explore themes such as ethnicity, the local economy, labour relations, privatisation, unemployment, recreation, entertainment, politics, landscape and urban regeneration. The book is enriched with personal stories and anecdotes from many of the subjects of the photographs, providing a unique and intimate glimpse into life in Blackburn in the 1980s. As a disabled photographer, Christopher's identity and work are inseparable. His photographs reflect his unique perspective on Blackburn and its people. From the outset, he intended to create an intimate and personal interpretation, as a disabled artist, rather than a sanitised tourist guide. It would be a chronicle of the effects of the political and social climate of the time on Blackburn and Christopher's journey through it. The first phase of the project, from 1979 to 1985, produced a series of photographs that formed a touring exhibition funded by the North West Arts Council and Blackburn Borough Council. The exhibition, titled "Blackburn: A Town and Its People," opened at the Lewis Textile Museum in Blackburn in 1985. It was opened by Jack Straw, a former government minister and Blackburn's constituency MP, and toured various venues throughout the UK. Christopher continued to photograph Blackburn until 1989, when he left town to attend university. This work, spanning a decade, formed a consistent study of Blackburn. Christopher stored the negatives for the next few decades, but always longed to return to them. In 2015, he embarked on a mission to digitise, restore and archive the original negatives. Over the years, he had lost the names of some of the subjects in the photographs, and he was determined to rectify that. Christopher took to social media to do just that. The response was overwhelming. Many people had never seen the photographs before, and Christopher was able to give them digital copies as keepsakes. In some cases, the photograph was the only one they had of a deceased loved one. Some people were kind enough to contribute a short paragraph of text to accompany their image in the book. This adds a deeply personal touch to the finished work.

German Police Cars
Police cars are usually very visible in our society, advertising the important role of police and much loved by children. The role of the police is to enforce the law, to ensure the safety, health, and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder. Law enforcement is as old as human society and the giving of laws itself. In ancient China, Babylon and Egypt there were special law enforcement bodies. The authors have made a similar book on American police cars and the styles are quite different between the two countries. We hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
The Central Appalachians
Beautiful and wild, the Central Appalachians of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia are a hotspot for biodiversity. They also make up a large part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed and are responsible for a majority of its freshwater flow to the Chesapeake Bay. Award-winning author and nature photographer Mark Hendricks spent years documenting life on the mountain trails and underneath Appalachian waters and built camera traps to capture images of rarely seen species. Not only are these images beautiful and fascinating, but they bring more understanding of the environmental importance of the area. Between seasonal portfolios are various essays, featuring - stories of an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, - a biologist dedicated to saving fungus-plagued bats in winter caves, - an ecologist who protects one of the most rare ecosystems in the region, - a close encounter with a bobcat, and - various encounters with other rare and exciting species such as black bear, eastern hellbender and other rare salamanders, and sparring elk. Well-known locations such as Shenandoah National Park are featured prominently, as are little-known areas such as the Finzel Swamp and the famous reintroduced elk herd of north-central Pennsylvania. Oak Cradle
In 2011 photographer Karen D. Gros made a series of images featuring Emily Knobloch in her family home in Thibodaux, Louisiana, along with heirloom objects found in her attic-old photographs, furniture, and a black linen mourning dress. What Gros never could have predicted is that ninety days after these images were taken, her nineteen-year-old son, Garrett, would die by suicide. He drove his car head on into an oak tree. Gros literally became the mourning woman in the images, and her photography became a way for her to cope with this unimaginable loss. Poet Chantel L. Carlson saw the images in 2015 and immediately wanted to know the underlying narrative.Their ensuing conversations about grief, loss, and perseverance resulted in this magnificent collection of poems and photographs intended to support and remind grieving individuals that they are not alone.
Yelena Yemchuk: Malanka
Heartfelt documentation of a traditional Ukrainian ritual heralding the arrival of spring: a startlingly personal project from the photographer and film director known for her work with the Smashing PumpkinsThis is the sixth photobook by Ukrainian American visual artist Yelena Yemchuk (born 1970). Born in Kyiv but based in the United States, Yemchuk makes images that teeter on the threshold between her Eastern European heritage and her daily life in New York; between fiction and reality; between the grand beauty of 1960s cinema and the social and built environments of post-Soviet realms. Through Yemchuk's gaze, spaces blur to create dreamscapes and metamorphoses. As with all of her work, Malanka is a personal, feminine, surrealist and magical project. The eponymous tradition is a pre-Christian folklore ritual driving out winter and welcoming spring, an ancient custom reminiscent of Persephone's return in Greek mythology. It is celebrated on January 14, the old New Year in the Julian calendar, by ethnic Romanians in western Ukraine. In 2019 and 2020, Yemchuk traveled to Crasna (Krasnoilsk in Ukrainian) to document the night-long festival. The book includes a poetic essay by Romanian cultural journalist Ioana Pelehatăi.
